They were taken from the OC Animal Shelter, by a foster organization, Stella's Hope, which  no longer exists.  The foster group took them to adoption events, one of two that I organized here on Main Street. I adopted both of them the same day.  Many people see poodle in Boomer, but who knows. They have been absolute little angels.  For every remodeling project done by Towne & Country Design during 2020, we will donate $200 to OC Animal Shelter in your name. DesignToInstallation.com

regarding your individual situation. One way to reduce your taxable income is to make sure you’re maximizing your 401(k) and IRA contributions. Every dollar you contribute to your retirement plan(s) removes a dollar from your taxable income. For 2019, you

1

can contribute a maximum of $19,000 to your 401(k) ($25,000 if INCOME Take a look at your income for the year and make sure that you have adequately withheld for income taxes. If

you’re over 50) and a maximum of $6,000 to your IRA ($7,000 if you’re over age 50). Not only that, but these retirement accounts grow tax-deferred as well!

you’ve changed jobs mid-year or had unexpected

income, your tax withholding may not have been sufficient. This will help prevent any unpleasant surprises when it comes time to file your tax return. Did you receive a gift or inheritance this year?  Good news: This is generally not included in your taxable income! However, if you inherited an IRA or a 401(k) (and in some cases, an annuity) and were required to make a withdrawal, that would generally be included in your taxable income. Be sure to consult your tax professional regarding your individual situation.

4

INSURANCE PLANNING The end of the year is a great time to make sure that your insurance policies are properly protecting you and that all of the beneficiary designations are up to date. Have

you gone through any life-changing events this year such as marriage, birth of a child, divorce or death? If so, your insurance needs have likely changed. Consult with your financial adviser to ensure you’re adequately covered. You also want to make sure that you’ve updated the beneficiary designations on your insurance policies and retirement accounts.

2

SAVINGS Most of us tend to think of a budget in terms of monthly expenses, and we forget to factor in those annual items such as holiday spending, special occasions, insurance premi-

ums, back-to-school expenses, vacations, auto maintenance and repairs. I recommend taking some time at the end of the year to review your actual spending and then use that as a template for next year’s budget. Calculate what you’ll need for the year, divide by 12 and transfer that amount into a savings account each month.

5

ITEMS BEST PURCHASED AT THE END OF THE YEAR For business owners, the end of the year is a great time to make those deductible purchases for the business, assuming that they are needed. Review the embedded

gains and losses in your portfolio and consider doing some tax loss/gain harvesting. For example, if you’re in a low tax bracket for the year, it might make sense to sell some appreciated stock or mutual funds to realize that gain in a low-income year rather than a future higher-income year. Be sure to consult your financial

BELOVED CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS COME ALIVE WITH THE HELP OF BUSINESS OWNERS AND BENEVOLENT VOLUNTEERS

LOCAL HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

THE WINDS OF CHANGE HAVE BROUGHT FALLEN AUTUMNAL LEAVES DOWN TO A CARPET OF YELLOWS, ORANGES AND BROWNS, WITH THE CRUNCH OF THE SEASON UNDER OUR BOOTS. We rarely see it happen—seemingly overnight—that the decorations appear from out of nowhere, our eyes flickering with delight and amazement, and we know the holiday season is here. In Southern California winter fashion, seasonal celebrations are not paired with snow, but with the familiar aroma of pumpkin spice mingled with music coming from unseen speakers and sparkling lights twirled up tall trees along our city streets.

Stacks of presents ready for presentation to Families of Active Military.

Some special local holiday traditions are made possible because a special group of humans choose to give their time and money for the joy and celebration of others. Like admiring a special ornament that brings back the memory of the giver, we’re pulling back the curtain on the folks who make those holiday celebrations extra special.

EASTLAKE HOLIDAY OF LIGHTS BOAT PARADE AND ADOPT A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS This year marks the 32nd annual Holiday of Lights Eastlake Boat Parade, a holiday tradition that began in the minds and hearts of Bridget and Eddie Blehm of Eastlake Village. In the early years of the boat parade, Bridget realized that having beautiful holiday entertainment that could draw the community together would help increase participation and donations to charities such as Blankets for the Homeless, Meals on Wheels and Adopt a Military Family for Christmas. The residents of Eastlake Village, parade participants and other volunteers help raise funds for her charity, For Families of Active Military. Each November, Bridget and an army of volunteers gather at the Eastlake Clubhouse to pack lunch boxes, gift baskets and prepare a feast for the soldiers who are bussed in for the occasion. Just after Thanksgiving, a tree appears in the Eastlake clubhouse with names and gift wishes on them for Adopt a Military Family for Christmas. Secret Santa shoppers take the tags and purchase the gift items and return them to the clubhouse. By early December, they are ready for wrapping and delivery at a special luncheon for the military families at Fort Irwin near Barstow and Camp Pendleton in Oceanside.

Dec. 14th is the 32nd year of the Eastlake Holiday of Lights Boat Parade.

SANTA BENNY PRESTON Recuperating in a cardiac rehab center in 2002, Benny Preston met another patient who was a real-bearded Santa who said that When not "in suit," Benny Preston has collected over 5,000 celebrity and athlete autographs.

given a red suit and boots, he would make a very authentic-looking Santa Claus. Benny, a self-described introvert and often grumpy man back in those days, took the comment to heart and reinvented himself with the qualities of a Santa Claus as a more cheerful and outgoing man. Off-season, Benny worked for Auto Zone in Yorba Linda making red truck deliveries decorated with antlers and a license plate that openly revealed his identity: MYSLIEH. Looking much like a cool summer Santa for most of the year, he often donned a red shirt and Bermuda shorts, and with a twinkle in his eye above the ever-present beard, he caught attention even from far across the street. “I hear them honk and yell, ‘Santa!’ so I always turn to wave and smile,” he says. “Even if I can’t see them exactly, I always turn around to let them know I hear them.” As if by clockwork and the strike of December, Santa’s schedule books up with local stops at Faith Community Church, D & J Custom Crafts, Stefano's Golden Baked Hams and My Gym Yorba Linda for photos and socializing. One year he was called on the afternoon of Christmas Eve while still “in suit” driving home from another event to help one family deliver presents to another family with young children in need of Christmas cheer. Benny showed up to deliver  presents that were bought and wrapped with every dollar of the husband’s year-end bonus and made Christmas wishes come true.  The Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, of which Benny is a member, endeavors to enhance the spirit of Santa, spread joy and serve children and the community as each of the people featured here has done. So, as the holiday season comes to its fullest, we’d

Benny Preston & friends posing at Cocoa with Santa at My Gym Yorba Linda.

like to thank each and every one of those who make the holidays brighter for others. December 2019 | Yorba Linda Lifestyle

and recently taught a hands-on workshop at the Western Regional Conference at the Southern California College of Optometry. The goal of the workshop was to help optometry students feel comfortable performing eye examinations on infants. The American Optometric Association recommends that babies be seen for their first eye examination around 6 months of age. Dr. Patel, along with her colleagues in the Pediatric Vision Care Service at Ketchum Health, participates in InfantSEE, a program that provides no-cost eye examinations to infants between 6 to 12 months of age.   In Dr. Patel’s opinion, providing appropriate vision and eye care to the pediatric population is a no-brainer. “I enjoy seeing patients in our clinic, but my heart goes out to the children I see who have an undetected vision disorder, which may have impacted their vision development or academic performance. When I explain the clinical findings to the parents, they often say, ‘Why did I not know about this sooner?’ This is a big reason why I have become very passionate about promoting the importance of pediatric vision care. Whether I am seeing patients, doing research, teaching or advocating, the bottom line is the same: I want to make a positive difference in the lives of our children.”

Dr. Patel recently had a baby of her own, Rayan, who she says is her pride and joy and her greatest inspiration by far. “Rayan puts a smile on my face every day, and being around him reminds me why the work I do is so important, not just for the present but for the future as well.” December 2019 | Yorba Linda Lifestyle

GIVING BACK

Holiday Push For Families of Active Military ARTICLE KRISTEN FEWEL

STANDING UP FOR THOSE WHO STAND UP FOR US

Ed & Bridget Blehm were recognized by the City Council for their service to the military community

S

OMEWHERE IN A FOREIGN LAND IS AN ACTIVE MILITARY SERVICE MEMBER HOLDING POST IN INCLEMENT WEATHER WITH LITTLE SLEEP OR COMFORT AS HIS FAMILY PRAYS FOR THEIR SAFE RETURN. Yorba Linda-based charity For Families of Active Military was created to support military families financially and emotionally during and after deployment.

FFAM came into being in 2006 when founder and CEO Bridget Blehm was on a long drive home with her husband, Eddie, considering how she wanted to give back to her community. In the span between traffic lights on Imperial Highway, Bridget conceived a complete vision of her larger role of providing respite for families of active military. The annual Eastlake Boat Parade Bridget and Eddie started had been raising money for charities for 18 years, but FFAM is now the primary charity that holds multiple events and fundraisers every year since 2006.  In November, the Eastlake Village clubhouse is ground zero for Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the troops. Two busloads of soldiers and their families are bussed in for a full day of Thanksgiving traditions. “Stuffing a Box” for the Troops collects and delivers boxes of food and a turkey to military families stationed at Fort Irwin, Miramar Air Station and Camp Pendleton, where volunteers prepare and serve a Thanksgiving feast for the troops.  Donations are greatly appreciated in this final push toward making Christmas special for military families. For details and volunteer opportunities with FFAM, call 714.403.7165. 24

families.

Donating gift cards or labor hours in this final push toward Christmas will make a special holiday for a military family.

Custom Sofas with Holiday Decor ARTICLE KRISTEN FEWEL PHOTOGRAPHY ANDRES DELFIN

Yorba Linda Lifestyle | December 2019

YOU KNOW THE PERSONALITY OF A SOFA THE MOMENT YOU SIT DOWN ON IT. The look and feel of your furniture says a lot about your lifestyle and carries the tone of how you wish to use the room. Whatever feeling or personality you wish to display in the comfort of your home or home office, get it custom-made; you’ll be glad you did. When choosing a custom sofa, it’s important to choose one made with quality materials such as solid wood frames, heavy-duty springs and with cushions that come with a lifetime warranty, which come standard on all the sofas at The Sofa Shop in Yorba Linda. The most important thing is to buy the perfect sofa that fits your comfort and lifestyle, because the accents and accessories that improve the tone of the room can always be changed. During the holidays, warm colors and light, seasonal accents draw a charming coziness. For a festive touch, richly colored furnishings derive balance and contrast with large decorative pillows in earth tones and wall wreaths of pine. An elegant white sofa

WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE

30

Yorba Linda Lifestyle | December 2019

FORSYTHIA Named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist, Forsythia is an early spring flowering shrub often found in gardens and parks. Forsythia are well-known for their resilience and tenacity as much as the bright, cheery yellow of the branches’ blooms.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

TWEEDIA This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.

LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slipper-shaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait—in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring.
