CABINETS Red cabinets add a pop of color and brightness.
WHEN CONNIE LONG WAS 12, SHE ASKED HER FATHER IF SHE COULD REDESIGN HER BEDROOM. He showed her how to move the door to another spot and repair the open wall left behind. She then tore out the closets and drew up plans so her uncle could make her built-ins. Once that was done, she picked out the paint and carpets and made her own draperies. So, you could say interior design is in her blood. Obtaining her degree as an interior designer from Watkins College of Art, Design and Film gave her a strong foundation to go along with her innate flair for design. Before opening her own business, Connie Long Interiors, in 1997, she spent over 16 years in the drapery and fabric business. She has also remodeled many of her own homes over the years as she and her husband moved from place to place.

could gather around to eat or sit and have a chat. It’s both a functional and fun space. “All of those accessories that are in there are all things she had that I knew would work. That’s why I gave her the open shelves,” said Connie. Connie also added a new built-in microwave, and a modern range and hood. Since the refrigerator was new, they built around that and the wine refrigerator the client wanted to keep. Everything, from top to bottom, was completed in October 2019. Connie said the rooms people most often want remodeled are kitchens and bathrooms; updating these also adds value to the home. Many houses are built by contractors, whom she explained often use contractor grade supplies such as particle wood cabinets in the kitchens and they don’t take into account adequate countertops or storage. “I interview people to find out what their needs are first, because they all have a list of things they’re needing out of their homes,” said Connie. “Whether it’s storage or more lighting, or a new kitchen, I start looking for ideas so I can share those,” she said. They then discuss the plan and narrow it down to fit what’s in their budget. Once the designs are complete, she draws out the plans for the contractors and subcontractors and does site visits to make sure things are being done properly. She wants her clients’ homes to be beautiful, usable and safe. Connie is a registered interior designer in the state of Tennessee, which requires her to take 24 continuing education units (CEU) every two years, with 13 of those related to health, safety and welfare. She’s also a professional member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and has to complete CEU credits for them as well. than peace of mind, he’s gained family members. Both his parents are only children and with the relationships they have built with other residents he feels he’s gained aunts and uncles, “it’s really more than I expected.” Both sets of Shearers are highly complementary of the staff and the feelings are mutual. “They know you and they know you by name,” Don says. Don and Arline began ballroom dancing at age 60 and quickly became quite competitive. Don boasts about how dancing highlighted Arline’s beauty and talent recalling some of Arline’s best competitive performances; one of his favorites to “Oh Pretty Woman.” The Shearers were even in the sexy Hollywood blockbuster Dance with Me about a Cuban dancer featuring Vanessa Williams. The Shearers’ happiness and zest for life are contagious and is what most of Generation Z would call “goals.” While Harmony has a salon, Arline chooses to go off-site to Hair Expressions in Brentwood with her daughter-in-law Carol to get her hair done. And like many other female Brentwood residents, a day out is not complete without a stop at The Puffy Muffin. Arline’s go-to is the breakfast sandwich. And don’t think things stay tame at Harmony. The broadcast of the Titan’s playoff games in the Theater Room bring out the competitiveness and bantering nature of all in attendance. On more low-key nights Don and Arline like to watch game shows. At Harmony it’s always on to the next fun event or mixer and the Shearers are happily all in.

GETTING ORGANIZED SAVES BOTH TIME AND MONEY

WIPT designs (pronounced whipped, as in getting areas of the home organized and whipped into shape) was started by Beth Hayden. Beth, “created my company to yes, help people get organized, but really to reduce stress and save time so they can spend that time doing whatever they want. So basically creating efficiency so time isn’t wasted. Time is one thing we can’t get more of, so by living efficiently time is then freed up to be spent where it’s needed.” With a background in interior design and space planning, combined with a lifelong love for efficiency and tidiness, this profession suits her perfectly. Being a single mother at 19, while going to school and working full time, meant having to be super organized in order to get everything done. “I needed everything to be in its place and easy to find since we didn’t have a lot of time,” said Beth. 38

TESTIMONIAL: “We moved into a beautiful 2-story home in Nashville just a short time ago and after some initial unpacking we quickly realized that getting our things organized in this home would be a huge challenge. We initially met Beth Hayden when our realtor suggested using a professional organization service and highly recommended Beth’s company: WIPT Designs. Beth came into our home like a ray of sunshine with oceans of positive energy, sincere kindness, and unexpected support. We consulted with Beth regarding our needs in the pantry and she immediately went to work purging unnecessary items and categorizing what remained. She worked quickly and efficiently and had the pantry organized and sparkling within a very short time; we couldn’t believe the creative functionality that was to be the final result. Shortly after this we showed Beth other problem areas in the home and were astonished with her intuitive solutions; as they were practical yet elegant at the same time. We have used Beth’s WIPT Design services to assist with all areas of our home including organization, design, measurements, ordering furniture, buildout drawings and so much more. She is a kind, thoughtful, caring person; all of our questions were always given her earnest attention. The organization and design Beth brought to our home has completely changed our lives forever. Her tips and lessons provided to our family have made it possible for all of us to maintain this efficient WIPT way of living and has reduced our stress levels in great measures. Thank you so much Beth!” - Jordan - Home Owner & Retired Pediatrician
TIP 4 Piles are a guarantee of disorganization. If you have to have stacks of clothing, use pocket folding. This tucks pieces in so they don’t become unfolded. Spending time refolding is a time waster. This type of folding also allows travelers to pack and unpack easily.

Brentwood Lifestyle | March 2020
WHEN YOUR LIVELIHOOD DEPENDS ON SALES AND MARKETING SKILLS, DEVELOPING THE PROPER TOOLS FOR SUCCESS CAN BE CHALLENGING. Yet that hasn’t stopped Damon Smith and his real estate team from reaching incredible heights. What is their key to success? It’s the lessons he learned from the sport of wrestling. “Achieving success in anything requires discipline, a hard work ethic, education, and persistence,” explained Damon, a Life Member of the Greater Nashville Realtors Association and six-time Diamond Award winner. “The success I’ve enjoyed in my personal and professional career is because I’ve applied all of these attributes to every part of my life, every day.” Along with his high school friend, Blake Shelton, Damon grew up in the small town of Ada, Oklahoma. His father managed the local funeral home, so he experienced death and people mourning at an early age. “That allowed me to see the world from a different perspective.” Damon enrolled at Oklahoma State University after high school - one of the top collegiate wrestling programs in the nation - competing for two seasons. Interestingly, the team won the NCAA championship in his freshman year in 1994. Although Damon loved wrestling, his pragmatic senses told him his future options were limited. “It wasn’t like I was going to qualify for the next Olympic team,” he jokingly stated. His love for country music also began to surface during college, and Damon asked for and received a guitar for Christmas. Once his playing and singing skills met his high expectations, the aspiring entertainer informed his parents he wanted to showcase his talent in local Oklahoma “opry” shows. Not wanting to “embarrass the family name” if his son’s musical talent was subpar, Damon’s dad suggested that he sing in neighboring Texas. CONTINUED >

getting your garden
ready for spring TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL GROWING SEASON
ARTICLE SUE BALDANI
SPRING IS ON THE WAY, AND ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THE SEASON IS WATCHING FLOWERS AND PLANTS BLOOM IN ALL THEIR GLORY. For many, gardening is a favorite hobby, and beautiful landscaping increases the enjoyment and value of any property. Of course, it’s important to prepare your garden for planting. To give us some tips on how to do that is Aaron Gunter, general manager of Willow Branch Landscapes. Primarily a landscape construction company, it handles commercial and residential projects such as irrigation, lighting, retaining walls, patios, and outdoor kitchens. Before putting your preferred plants in the ground, he advises taking some time to get your garden ready so your flowers and plants will flourish. For gardens, Aaron likes azaleas, astilbe, tulips, candytuft, and hostas, which are always popular. However, it depends on personal preference and location when choosing what to grow. 50
Brentwood Lifestyle | March 2020
1. Clean up any debris that has fallen over the fall and winter months. Rid the garden of leaves and sticks, and pull out any weeds or dead plants left over from last season. You want to start with a clean bed. 2. Apply a pre-emergence, such as Preen, in your soil beds. When it rains, these granules create a film to stop weeds from coming through. These can be found in almost any garden center, and applying every 90 days will help prevent a lot of back breaking weeding later on. 3. Correct any drainage issues since heavy downpours often occur in Tennessee in February and March. Poor drainage can kill plants and lead to soil erosion and flooding. 4. Do hard pruning on any shrubs or trees that are overgrown so they don’t overtake the area. Periodically trim to keep them in shape. This will also allow more sunlight to filter through.

THIS MONTH, BRENTWOOD LIFESTYLE STOPPED IN AT LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED NASHCO FURNITURE. We sat down (on a nice leather sofa) with the owner, Anthony Moore, to get an inside look at the latest and greatest in leather furniture. WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR LEATHER HUES? First of all, each leather is slightly different in tone, texture, and hue, which sets it apart from fabric. Most leathers have variations in color that are unique to each piece, which gives it the distinction that leather seekers are looking for! Variations of brown still have a foothold in the leather category. There has been a major uptick in lighter browns, camel or chestnut colors. CAN LEATHER COMPLEMENT OTHER FABRICS WHEN DESIGNING A ROOM? Leather is a great statement piece. Great additions to your design are an accent chair, ottoman, rug, or tables. Each of those things will incorporate well with a statement leather piece of furniture. There are so many colors and textures you can use to compliment a leather piece to finish a room. CAN LEATHER BE USED IN TRADITIONAL, MODERN, CONTEMPORARY, AND RUSTIC HOMES? There are so many different styles that go with a good leather piece. Leather typically takes on a traditional feel. We work with our leather supplier that provides great frames with supreme leather applications. The variety
of frames available can work in any environment, whether

hosting a housewarming party
DID YOU JUST BUY A NEW HOME? Are you ready to show it off to your friends and family? Why not throw a house-warming party!!! A house-warming is a party traditionally held soon after moving into a new residence. It is an occasion for the hosts to present their new home to their friends, post-moving, and for friends to give gifts to furnish the new home. House-warming parties are generally informal. Inviting your new neighbors to your housewarming party is an excellent way to get off on the right foot with them. You don’t have to invite the entire block, of course, but do consider sending an invite to the people who live on either side of you and across from you—just slip an invitation in their mailbox. Natasha Stoneking is a Nashville native and a life and style blogger at Hello Happiness, where she has served as the author and content creator for more than 12 years. TIPS
USING THE PANTONE 2020 COLOR OF THE YEAR! Leslie Newpher Interiors is an award-winning, full-service interior design firm with capabilities from the planning stage to the last accessory. Leslie herself has 25 years experience in the design field working in every capacity of interior design. She realizes that each project is a very personal experience. in a sharp color can totally change the whole feel of the face of your home. Inspiration from the Pantone 2020 color of the year Classic Blue is a great place to start to enter into a fresh new look as you freshen up your home in the new decade. 2. Wallpaper. Wallpaper, wallpaper, wallpaper! You cannot hide from it anymore. Although it’s not your momma’s wallpaper. New, and current designs brings beautiful color and pattern to every room. The layers of Classic Blue in this photo work seamlessly, so will your wallpaper if

you have a good installer, which I do. 3. Swatches. The new decade brings with it color for your Interiors! Grey and white are phasing out to make room for blues mixed with tomato reds, bright yellows, and white of course. Fortunately the grey and white you may have is the perfect backdrop to easily add a pop of color in your fabrics, art, accessories, and rugs. Throw a pillow in Classic Blue (Pantone 2020 color of the year) on your grey sofa to update in a snap!

4. Kitchen. This would be just another white kitchen without this pop of color on the blue pantry door with antiques mirrors! Notice the window trim and accessories that tie in the color. If you have the trendy white kitchen of the past few years, paint a feature in a beautiful rich color to bring life back to your kitchen! 5. Walls. These Walls! The Classic Blue paneled walls, cabinets, and trim in a lacquer finish no less makes a fabulous statement. This look never gets old. I used it in a show house in 1998 in grey believe it or not! Don’t be afraid just to paint it all! Also, lacquer on furniture, walls, and cabinets has been sneaking around for a while and will come out full force in this new decade. 6. Curtains. If you LOVE color you may use it everywhere in your home if done correctly.

Most food subscription boxes will allow you to choose a delivery day and time frame that works best for you. Your grocery items will be packaged as intuitively as possible, with any refrigerator items tucked in with ice packs. Bonus: You can reuse the insulation and ice packs in kids’ lunch boxes, on road trips or in your own lunches at work.

ingredients + Prep
Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

cooking
If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate.

let’s eat!
This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. Who knows— maybe the kids love some of the Purple Carrot recipes and don’t even notice how many veggies they are eating!
