JUST ADD DECORATIVE PAN AND SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE FOR HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F; arrange rack in the middle. Coat 12-cup Bundt pan with vegetable oil and flour; tap out excess flour. 2. In a large bowl, add measured flour, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, baking soda and salt. Whisk to aerate and break up any lumps; set aside. 3. Place sugar and measured oil in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed until sugar is incorporated, about 1 minute. Stop mixer and scrape down sides of the bowl and the paddle with a rubber spatula. 4. Return mixer to medium speed and add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, about 1 1/2 minutes total mixing time. Reduce speed to medium-low, add pumpkin, and beat until just combined, about 30 seconds. Stop mixer and scrape down sides of the bowl and the paddle with the rubber spatula. 5. Turn mixer to low speed, slowly add the reserved flour mixture, and beat until almost completely incorporated, about 1 minute. Remove the bowl from the mixer and fold in any unincorporated flour at the edges with the rubber spatula, making sure to scrape to the bottom of the bowl. 6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake until a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, about 1 hour to 70 minutes. 7. Remove pan to a wire rack and let cool for 15 minutes. Turn the cake out onto the wire rack and cool completely.

FOR SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE: In a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the sugar, cream and corn syrup; stir until the mixture is smooth, and bring to a boil. Continue to boil, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes more. Remove from the heat, stir in the salt, and set aside to cool slightly.

TO SERVE: Dust the cake with powdered sugar or nuts (if desired), slice and serve with the salted caramel sauce. This recipe was adapted from Chicken and Egg: A Memoir of Suburban Homesteading with 125 Recipes by Janice Cole.

ARTICLE SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY ALI MILLER WHEN LESLIE SCOUTTEN’S OLDEST CHILD STARTED HIGH SCHOOL IN 2016, SHE KNEW THAT BEFORE TOO LONG, ALL FOUR OF HER KIDS WOULD BE LEAVING HOME. Her corporate job didn’t leave her much time to spend with them, so after discussing matters with her husband, she decided to dive into her own business. The year before, Leslie, who lives in Brentwood, had started an online business called The Scoutten House, more as a hobby than anything else. The website originally offered mostly handmade personalized items. But with Leslie now being able to devote more time to her business as well as her children, The Scoutten House really took off. She now offers home and wedding decor as well.

24

Brentwood Lifestyle | November 2019

“When I got into the wedding market, it really changed things for me. What’s trending right now is more of a rustic, outdoor wedding feel, and a lot of my products have that feel,” Leslie says. She personally makes all the products she sells. She roams lumber yards looking for the right woods, which she sands and stains. Leslie also scours local hardware stores and other shops to find exactly what she needs for each item. “From start to finish, the product is homemade,” Leslie says. “That might sound like a lot to some people, but for me, I’m a natural DIYer, so I love making things. I don’t know if I would have it any other way. That’s what adds to the quality of each item and how unique it is; this is something I have taken from scratch and made.”

She learned skills mostly from watching her father, who had a shop in their backyard where he would do woodworking. As a teen, she actually helped him build a deck. Leslie keeps an eye on trends in home decor and weddings and can immediately recognize whether it’s something she can make. She then decides if she also can offer it at a competitive price. She also watches a lot of HGTV to get ideas and really loves when customers bring her their ideas. “One of the things I really enjoy is working with my customers. They pitch me their ideas, I create a digital proof, and then there’s a back and forth until we get to the point where we’re seeing the same thing,” Leslie says. She estimates that at least 30% of her current products have come from customers’ ideas. Many of these creations become staples for The Scoutten House. Leslie also makes seasonal items. Fall, in particular, she says, triggers porch decor. So, she gears a lot of her fall items toward outdoor decor, such as “Hello, Fall” or “Welcome to Our Patch” signs. For Christmas, she gets overwhelmed with requests for personalized gifts because most customers are buying for others rather than for themselves. Although she has customers from all over the country, Leslie is really looking forward to working with more local customers and getting to know the people right in Brentwood. She even offers local pickup, or she can ship anywhere in the U.S. “I feel so blessed to be working my dream job that allows me the ability to spend more time with my family,” Leslie says. MINI OF NASHVILLE PROVIDES VEHICLE FOR COMPASSION OVER HOLIDAY SEASON

ARTICLE ANN WALCZAK PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE SALVATION ARMY 30

Brentwood Lifestyle | November 2019

THE SALVATION ARMY’S CHEERY RED KETTLE HAS BEEN A FAMILIAR SIGHT AROUND THE HOLIDAYS FOR MORE THAN 128 YEARS. What began humbly by feeding 1,000 people in San Francisco in 1891 now serves 4.5 million. In Nashville, The Salvation Army holds The Red Kettle Challenge, which invites anyone to adopt their own kettle with the goal of raising $1,000. Each time that goal is reached, The Salvation Army is able to house one local person for a month. “We help people who’ve been displaced and living on the street move into supportive housing, and we walk with them on their journey until they move into a home of their own,” says Major Ethan Frizzell, area commander for The Salvation Army in Nashville. The organization moves countless gifts, kettles, volunteers and services during this time, making it necessary to rent extra vehicles to handle the increased holiday volume. Last year, an enthusiastic partnership was struck with MINI of Nashville to wrap a MINI with the call to action of The Red Kettle Challenge. It also provides significant savings to a more-than-worthy organization. “Dave was prepared to help when we walked in,” recalls Maj. Frizzell. “He said, ‘We love The Salvation Army, we love the community, we’d love to help.” “Once I knew that 100% of the money stays locally and they were trying to reacclimate people into society as opposed to just applying a Band-Aid, that did it for me,” says David Dorsano, MINI of Nashville general manager. “And they were aligned with my faith, so it was a done deal. It really has nothing to do with us or publicity. There are some personal reasons I wanted to help them, and as long as I’m at this store, I’m going to keep supporting them.” “With The MINI Kettle car’s wrap and contemporary look, [the MINI] makes The Salvation Army kettle a more regular part of more family conversations,” Maj. Frizzell says. “Families point the car out, and it gives us the opportunity to share the message of the benefit of the kettle–one of the most iconic and simple ways of giving in the United States.” The MINI provides a new, more modern approach for sharing compassion with those in need. “Part of the reason the MINI is so important is because the retail market is changing as more people are shopping online or not carrying cash. The MINI brings the kettle to where people are in Nashville. We may or may not be at the store they go to anymore, CONTINUED >

but we are in traffic with them in a nice new MINI with a call to action to change lives.” Donations can be made in person or online. The Salvation Army and MINI Cooper also are available to be scheduled for special events. David summarizes it best: “We all know there are homeless people. For me, I looked at homeless people like the majority of them were homeless [due to] choices or decisions they made. That was a long time ago. Once I realized there are people who are literally homeless by no choice of their own, [I realized] you can’t look down on them. Try to reach out your hand. We all say we wish the world would end homelessness, but how many times has one of us seen someone who we knew was homeless and said hello? We stop short of engaging in some way with the individual, and sometimes all it takes is someone to say hello and it can change their life. Too many people end up taking their own life or hurt others. We want to [do what we can] to right that ship.” 32

Not Rushing Through Life EDDIE GEORGE: OUR HOMETOWN MODEL OF MINDFULNESS

ARTICLE WILLIAM HARWOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEY HYLBERT IT’S HALFTIME AT THE TITANS’ HOME OPENER THIS SEASON. The fans filling the stadium are witnesses to a special ceremony. Two jerseys will be retired, 27 and 9, the highest honor a team can bestow upon its greatest players. They are the numbers of Eddie George and the late Steve McNair. As a lone cloud in the shape of a nine floats directly overhead (feel free to Google it), Eddie George steps to the microphone to give expression to the moving moment. He waits for the crowd’s chants of “Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!” to fade before beginning with a quote from Shakespeare: “Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel.” The quote perfectly encapsulates the indomitable spirit that made the Titans of Steve McNair and Eddie George so special, those Music City miracle makers who demonstrated time and again the ability to overcome adversity and persevere, their “adoption tried,” as Shakespeare put it. But what were the ingredients that comprised the team’s indomitable spirit? Eddie gives the answer in just four words: “Trust. Accountability. Respect. Love.” If Eddie George had never played a single down of football, if he had never won the Heisman Trophy or the NFL’s Rookie of the Year, if he had not gone four times to the Pro Bowl or had led Tennessee to an AFC championship and to Super Bowl XXXIV, if he had not amassed 10,000-plus yards rushing without missing a single game or received nomination this year to the Hall of Fame, then he would still merit a feature article. Eddie George is not just a gridiron legend whose playing days now lie in the past (no matter how much Titans fans wish otherwise); he is a present-day tour-de-force as an entrepreneur, an educator and an actor. To succeed in his wide-ranging endeavors, Eddie relies on what he calls his four pillars: the spiritual, the mental, the social and the physical. He prioritizes the spiritual. “By living spiritually,” he says, “everything else falls into alignment.” For Eddie, living spiritually entails attendance at church and following biblical principles. It also entails morning family prayer circles and daily practice of prayer and meditation on his own. 40

Brentwood Lifestyle | November 2019

“For mental,” Eddie says, “my purpose is to have a clear thought of who I want to be. To be the best mentor, guide and leader I can be. To guide my family, and to make sure I’m mentoring well to my sons, Jaire and Eriq, and others after them.” As for the social pillar, Eddie seeks the company of other leaders. “Gotta’ have the right people on the bus,” he says with a grin. “I make sure I’m around the right people, people who have more knowledge, and I avoid energy drainers.” But he also ensures he doesn’t get so wrapped up in career goals that he neglects what’s most important: his family. Eddie sets up a weekly date night with his wife, Tamara, the woman he addressed in his Titans speech as “my universe, the love of my life, my beautiful and talented wife.” The physical pillar is more obvious. He is, after all, Eddie George. Still, few realize that in this year alone Eddie will accrue almost five times more yards in swimming than he ever did in rushing throughout his entire career. “Sometime in November,” he says, “I’ll hit the 50,000-yard mark in the pool for 2019.” The exercise has paid off.

NOT RUSHING THROUGH LIFE

(CON TI N U ED)

“I’ve lost 25 pounds and am back to my old playing weight of 240. I maintain my body correctly so I can live longer and healthier. Plus my joints feel better,” he adds. Eddie’s practice of the four pillars provides him with the foundation for his remarkable achievements in very different fields. As an entrepreneur, Eddie has launched a number of successful businesses that benefit people, including the Edward George Wealth Management Group, a client-centered firm that creates not just investment portfolios based on clients’ investment goals but provides estate planning, tax planning and retirement planning as well. To develop his business acumen, Eddie earned an MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Educationally, Eddie saw the need for a college course that could help those aspiring to join the ecosystem of professional sports— from players to coaches to agents to managers to team executives—understand the special pitfalls and challenges of the sports entertainment industry. The course he developed, The Business of Professional Sports, is offered at the Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University. As an actor, Eddie has played many roles to critical acclaim, from the noble general Othello in Shakespeare’s play to the less than noble defense attorney Billy Flynn in Chicago on Broadway. “I prefer the stage to being in front of the camera,” Eddie says. “The stakes are higher. It forces you to really pay attention.” As for what we can expect in the future? “I’m working on a one-man show,” he shares. “It’s been 12 years in the making. The story of how I became me. I want my story to be accurate and authentic. While I’m still breathing, I want people to be inspired by the things I’ve done or learn from the mistakes I’ve made.” If past is indeed prologue, then the self-told story of this remarkable man will prove an inspiration to all. 42

MUST-SEE PERFECTION OF BEAVER CREEK LODGE'S FAMILY SKI RESORT

up haphazardly from their respective mining towns, Beaver Creek was designed from its inception as a luxury destination. The planning paid off. Beaver Creek sets the standard for what a ski resort can be, providing a magical place that combines the majesty of awe-inspiring mountains with an enchanting alpine village that radiates sophisticated elegance. From its wide selection of upscale accommodations, boutique shopping and fine art galleries to its generous choice of restaurants with chef-driven cuisine, Vilar Performing Arts Center, outdoor skating rink and ubiquitous firepits, the village of Beaver Creek delivers only the highest quality experiences to delight all the senses—always something wonderful to see and hear, taste and touch. And, of course, always something wonderful to do! Beaver Creek is legendary for its abundance of lifts, runs and routes. From its double black diamonds and its kid-friendly terrain parks to its expertly staffed ski school, Beaver Creek can accommodate any age or ability level with appropriate runs from which to choose. For beginners, no worries. Beaver Creek has newly opened Haymeadow Park, a second signature learning area that augments its first state-of-the-art, 200-acre learning area, Red Buffalo Park. The takeaway is that Beaver Creek features the most dedicated learning terrain in Colorado, earning it hands down the title of the world’s best luxury ski resort for families. For genuine experts, Beaver Creek has no shortage of adrenaline-inducing challenges, including the famous Birds of Prey, a run that drops 2,470 feet in 1.71 miles and was designed specifically for the 1999 World Cup Championship. Regardless of one’s skills on the snow, it’s fun for guests to avail themselves of one-of-a-kind Beaver Creek experiences, such as ski-in fine dining to SaddleRidge Restaurant, open for both lunch and dinner. It’s renowned for its wild game dishes and for housing one of the largest collections of Western artifacts outside a museum. Also not to be missed is an open sleigh ride to Allie’s Cabin to savor wine-paired gourmet dinners and spectacular fireworks displays. However anyone wants to spend their time at Beaver Creek Lodge, it may become an annual tradition. Brentwood Lifestyle | November 2019

SUNBURST SHUTTERS & WINDOW FASHIONS NASHVILLE OFFERS PRODUCTS, SERVICES AND A PHILOSOPHY THAT STARTS WITH A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE AND ENERGY SAVINGS. Based on 40-plus years of American craftmanship, Sunburst Nashville manager Stefano Diotaiuti says the company’s teams enjoy assisting clients with custom window treatments for any room and any size or shape window by keeping in mind both pleasing aesthetics and functionality. They also offer free, in-home design consultations to ensure each project is done according to what works with each setup. Knowing that windows are the main source of temperature loss in homes, Sunburst experts even created their own signature product line called Polywood shutters. Unlike wood or vinyl shutters, Polywood is a unique synthetic material that won’t warp, crack or split. Stefano says Polywood is simply engineered in a smarter way and is designed to significantly reduce heat losses or gains. “It’s a patented insulating system that completely covers window openings, adding enhanced protection to them. It’s made to close tighter and seal gaps better than other shutters, blocking more outside air from flowing into the home,” he adds. Stefano says the company’s window coverings range from shutters and sunshades to blinds and barn doors. “We offer products based on interior design components, durability, energy efficiency, light control and privacy preferences,” he says. He says Sunburst Nashville clients really appreciate the versatility of their selections and the reliability of their services. Sunburst teams also can assist with selecting the right window treatments for Nashville’s summer heat. For example, Polywood shutters can stop airflow or block as much as 30 degrees of heat coming from a window when the shutters are fully closed. Polywood shutters reduce heat transfer by almost 46%. Stefano says R-value measures the energy efficiency in windows, insulation material and window treatments. “You want a window treatment to have a high R-value. When Polywood shutters are closed and paired with a double-pane window, their R-value is 6, one of the highest values for window treatments,” he says. With stores and dealers servicing 80-plus U.S. markets as well as international countries, Stefano says they have a reputation for building the world’s best shutters and taking care of their clients. “We all share the attitude that we want you to be totally happy with your purchase. We strive to make everything perfect, giving you a more beautiful home that you’ll love for years to come,” he says.

ROOM TIPS TIP NUMBER ONE Polywood has interlocking weatherstripping along the vertical stiles and louvers that rest tightly upon each other to minimize airflow. This keeps homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The result is an insulating system that greatly enhances the energy efficiency of windows and provides tremendous energy savings for homes. TIP NUMBER TWO The best way to stop airflow is by trapping the air between the window and the room, which happens when Polywood shutters are completely closed. Unlike other plantation shutters, Polywood shutters even have weather stripping, which further blocks off any air transfer. TIP NUMBER THREE Polywood shutters are up to 70% more energy-efficient than wood shutters and up to 1,600% more energy-efficient than aluminum blinds. TIP NUMBER FOUR Sunburst is known for providing top-quality window treatments for any budget and superior customer experience. 54

“I FELT CALLED TO SERVE,” BRENTWOOD MAYOR RHEA LITTLE SAYS. “AND I’M NOT ALONE. WE’RE BLESSED TO HAVE A LOT OF PUBLIC SERVANTS HERE, CITIZENS WHO EXCEL IN THEIR FIELDS AND WHO WORK TOGETHER TO HELP MAKE BRENTWOOD A COMMUNITY OF EXCELLENCE. WE SHOULD ALL REALIZE HOW BLESSED WE ARE.”

EDMONDSON AND WILSON MERELY CONJURE PICTURES OF STREET SIGNS ALONG TWO OF THE BUSIER THOROUGHFARES. But for Mayor Rhea Little, those same signs are invitations to trips down memory lane, to revisit his boyhood and a time before Brentwood was even incorporated. He recalls the horse and dairy farms that dotted the land with very few buildings to block the view of the WSM Tower, the giant landmark that, even during Mayor Little’s childhood, had seemingly stood there forever. “Brentwood has grown more than 10 times over since I was a boy,” Mayor Little observes in his gentle and deeply authentic Southern drawl. “Back then, it was almost a game to figure out how everyone was related. But Tommy Edmondson still lives on Edmondson Pike, and Tommy Wilson still lives in the Oak Hall House.” Mayor Little knows them well. He knows lots of folks in Brentwood well. Born here in 1962, his family’s roots stretch back to 1790 when his great-great-great-grandfather received a land grant for his service in the war— the Revolutionary War. He settled off Concord Road and

Edmondson Pike, land that remains in family hands. “It was a very rural area,” Mayor Little observes. “A big night out in Brentwood was dining at The Squire’s Table.” And what would the youth of Brentwood do back then for fun? “We would lob water balloons down on the passing trains,” Mayor Little admits with a grin, the statute of limitations having long since passed. But minor mischief-making aside, the mayor’s idyllic boyhood provided a foundation of faith and taught him the importance of community and the nobleness of work, which are values he now incorporates into his role as a public servant for Brentwood.
