AT NEMETH & KATRANJI PERIODONTICS, OUR MOTTO IS
“HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHIER BODY.” Periodontal diseases are often referred to as “The Other Silent Killer” because most people don’t even realize they have it, and don’t know how dangerous it is. Gum Disease can make you more susceptible to the many diseases that worsen the effects of coronavirus. Gum disease bacteria and their products get into your blood stream and increase your risk of all cardiovascular diseases, heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes and many other systemic diseases. I’ve had many patients who’s blood sugar was very high or out of control and after getting their gums treated, their blood sugar goes down and their Diabetes becomes more controllable. It’s really important that you make sure you get checked to see if your gums are healthy. There should be no bleeding. Bleeding gums are never normal! If your gums bleed, that means there is an infection. We understand the direct link between proper oral health and overall health. The sooner you can get your gums healthy, the higher chance you have of minimizing the risk of all of these systemic diseases. It can have a major impact on the health of your whole body. Our results in treating gum disease, tooth loss, bad breath, and other issues speak for themselves. Come see what we can do for you.

as we head into August, many of us haven't had the opportunity to spend our free time this summer as we normally would or how we would like to. Our ongoing battle with COVID-19 has tested the patience of us all, and our local business owners continue to struggle while trying to recover after several months of being closed due to the pandemic. We need to stay strong and come together as a community to help each other get through these trying times. Of course we are all there for our family and friends, but try to take that extra step in helping your neighbor, donating to "local" charities and when in need of goods or services, give one of our many excellent "local" stores or professional businesses a try. The Black Lives Matter movement taking the lead in fighting against police injustice shows us how communities across the United States have come together to push for positive change. ICE CREAM
When the summer days are hot, a cool treat always hits the spot. Our family loves to pick up in-season berries at the farmers market– because there’s just nothing like a fresh berry salad served over ice cream! The beauty in these recipes is that they are so simple; even the littlest of your little helpers can get in on the mixing. The freezer time can be an agonizing wait for kids, but the reward pays off with a delicious treat that they will be amazed they made themselves.
INGREDIENTS + 2 cups heavy whipping cream + 1 cup vanilla pudding + 1 cup vanilla yogurt
DIRECTIONS Whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Fold in pudding and yogurt. Freeze a minimum of four hours before serving. Hint: You can make the pudding from a box mix or keep it really simple and use the snack-sized, premade cups. Three snack cups equal one cup pudding! CONTINUED >

SUMMER’S BEST
BERRY SALAD What I love about this salad is that the vinegar really gives an unexpected flavor twist that pairs surprisingly well with the berries. The yogurt in the ice cream adds a nice, complementary tang that makes this taste quite adult and sophisticated but is still a big hit with any ice cream and berry-loving child. Take it up another notch by serving alongside angel food cake or drizzling with a nice balsamic reduction!
INGREDIENTS + 18 ounces strawberries + 6 ounces raspberries + 6 ounces blackberries + 12 ounces blueberries + 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar + 1 teaspoon honey + 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
DIRECTIONS Rinse all berries and allow to drain while hulling and halving the strawberries. In a small bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, honey and cinnamon. Combine berries in a large bowl, pour vinegar mixture over top and gently toss. Best served immediately but will keep in the fridge. Hint: This is a great recipe to use those fun flavored vinegars that may be hiding in the back of your cupboard. Swap out the white balsamic for any fruity, light-colored vinegar you have on hand. The Sphynx WEST BLOOMFIELD RESIDENT AND BUSINESS OWNER SHARES HER FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR THREE PET SPHYNXES: GANDHI, PHARAOH AND UNCLE FESTER.
WHEN WEST BLOOMFIELD RESIDENT NIKKI BUDAJ-CHATFIELD WALKS IN THE DOOR AFTER A DAY AT WORK, SHE IS NOT ONLY GREETED BY HER HUSBAND, TWO SONS AND POODLE– BUT ALSO THREE SPHYNXES. “I always say the sphynx is a cross between a monkey, clown and dog,” Budaj-Chatfield said, laughing. “There might be a little cat in there in the sense that they use a litter box and purr, but these cats actually want to be with people! They don’t hide when people come over or have the same fears most cats do.” According to petmd.com, the sphynx is a high-energy cat that can perform acrobatic tricks and is excellent at balancing, climbing atop doors and bookshelves and even perching on shoulders like a bird. A true extrovert, the sphynx is known to love human attention and to entertain.

“They’re the cat that gets along with every single animal, never hissing or spitting,” Budaj-Chatfield added. “Yeah they tend to freak people out, but they’re honestly the best pet.” Budaj-Chatfield became a mother to her first sphynx, “Gandhi,” in 2013 and, soon after, to his half-brother “Pharaoh.” When her husband’s cat (with fur) passed away,

Although the sphynx seemingly lacks hair, Budaj-Chatfield still prioritizes grooming. Cats’ body oils are normally absorbed by their fur; however, since these cats are not plentiful in that department, they do not have a natural way of keeping the oil on the skin in balance. Therefore, regular bathing routines have to be put in place. For those considering the sphynx as a pet, Budaj-Chatfield is “all for it.”

KEEP YOUR SMILE ADAM FIENMAN DDS IN WEST BLOOMFIELD CONTINUOUSLY PROVIDES EXCEPTIONAL DENTAL CARE TO PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
ARTICLE DANIELLE ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHY JOE LEASE
ADAM FIENMAN DDS WAS FOUNDED IN 1999 BY DR. ALLEN PLATT (THEN CALLED ALLEN R. PLATT DDS) TO PROVIDE EXCEPTIONAL DENTAL CARE TO PATIENTS FROM WEST BLOOMFIELD, THE GREATER METRO DETROIT AREA AND BEYOND. Over two decades later, high quality dental care in a compassionate and fun-loving atmosphere is definitely alive and well. When patients first enter the office of Dr. Fienman, they will not experience a cold, clinical feel but rather, as Dr. Fienman describes it, an “extension of my home.” In fact, with the current Covid regulations, he said the experience will feel even more personal. “The traditional waiting room has been put on hold, so patients will wait in their cars until one of the hygienists or assistants welcomes them in,” Dr. Fienman explained in June. “Patients would be welcomed by Lisa (office manager) and Laura (scheduling coordinator) at the front desk and then taken through a short health screening questionnaire, including a temperature check.” 20

Dr. Fienman’s two-year-old labradoodle mix, Zeus, has completed basic obedience training, earning his AKC Canine Good Citizen designations. Zeus was about to start his training to achieve therapy dog status when the Covid restrictions took effect, but Dr. Fienman said he looks forward to the near future when he can return to his place in the office.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED) Treatment rooms are equipped with Sonos audio systems and the latest streaming music channels, allowing patients to choose what they would like to hear while the team at Dr. Fienman takes care of their dental needs. Additionally, Zeus, a two-year-old labradoodle mix, has spent almost every day at the office since Dr. Fienman took over the practice from Dr. Platt; however, ever since the Covid restrictions took effect, Zeus has been at home with the Fienman family. “He usually spends the day sleeping on the couch in my office, having lunch with the staff and visiting our dog-loving patients throughout the day,” Dr. Fienman said. “We look forward to the near future when he can return to his place in the office, but until then, he will be living a very active life with my family at home.” In addition to Zeus, Dr. Fienman and his wife, Tracie, have four children: big sister Madelyn and triplets Hannah, Blake and Levi. Caring for others obviously comes naturally to Dr. Fienman who added that his staff especially likes caring for everyone’s friends and families, as well. “The dental office is a very challenging place for many people,” he said. “There are a lot of people who don’t like the dentist because they have had bad experiences in the past. When I am in treatment with a patient, that is the only person who matters, and they have my full attention regardless of what else is happening in the office and regardless of their age. The person in the big chair is the most important person to me at that moment.” A New Jersey native, Dr. Fienman is the son of an orthodontist and dental hygienist. He completed both his undergraduate and dental school studies at the University of Michigan. He then pursued further training, completing a general practice residency in 2006 at University Hospital in Ann Arbor where he was able to gain valuable experience treating a wide range of patients with complex medical needs. Dr. Fienman said his four years of undergraduate work and four years of dental school laid a foundation for the challenges he faces day-today. With new techniques, material and technologies constantly being developed and advanced in dentistry though, he regularly expands his clinical offerings to patients through the completion of a wide range of continuing education courses such as extensive training in oral surgery, dental implants, bone grafting, orthodontics and Invisalign. “As a practicing dentist in Michigan, I am required to keep up with continuing education courses and complete 60 credits every three years to maintain my license,” he explained. “I think I have over 90 credits, and I am not even halfway through my current three-year renewal cycle. In order to be your best, you have to continually challenge yourself and learn new things.” Adam Fienman DDS is located at 5813 W. Maple Rd. (Suite 131) in West Bloomfield. The office will continue to follow the highest infection control standards from OSHA, the CDC, American Dental Association and Michigan Dental Association. For more information, call (248)-539-3600 or visit fienmandds.com. “My goal is for my patients to keep their smiles for the rest of their lives,” Dr. Fienman said. “I find that people who do, tend to be much happier.” 22

My true passion, though, has always been dogs. As the son of a police K-9 handler, I grew up with multiple dogs in the home at all times. The most rewarding aspect of being in the store is offering solutions and getting phenomenal results. The gracious “thank you” from the pet parents is the most rewarding experience. M AT E R I A L S
PIÑLLAMA
+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
