A New School Year AUGUST 1 ALWAYS HAS A WAY OF FEELING A LOT LIKE NEW YEAR'S DAY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS AT HOME. As of this writing, we're anticipating that school life will resume — though we know it will be far from normal. Now may be the perfect time to pick up new habits and come up with some new "New Year's" resolutions. Consider becoming a blood donor, especially at a time

We're especially inspired by Phenom Phactory football coach Sean White, who is carrying on the example of his own dad by pouring himself into the lives of young athletes. “It's not necessarily just about training athletes, I wanted to use it as a channel to mentor," Sean says. impacted the U.S. blood supply as Vitalant and other blood centers across the country cope with stabilizing blood inventories to meet patients’ transfusion needs. Since the coronavirus pandemic started, Vitalant—the nation’s second-largest blood collector—has had nearly 2,000 blood drives canceled, resulting in more than 57,000 uncollected blood donations. Vitalant strongly recommends that healthy donors schedule an appointment for a donation over the coming days and weeks—instead of donating without an appointment right now—to help us better serve donors and appropriately manage the blood supply. FUN PAPER CRAFT PROJECTS FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

PIÑLLAMA

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product. DIRECTIONS 1. Using a stencil, cut out the pieces you’ll need for your flamingo from construction paper: Pink: 4-6 circles for the body (depending on how “fluffy” you want it), neck and legs White: Outline of the beak Black: Beak 2. Fold the circles in half and glue them all together back-to-back to create a sphere that looks like an accordion. 3. Glue the beak and white stripe to the neck, then glue the neck to a flat side of your inner-most circle. 4. Add the legs, a black dot for an eye and pink feathers for the ultimate flamin-goal.

LORI LOGAN’S LEGS WERE TIRED. A long-time cyclist, she was commuting on her bike to her job in Denver from her home in Highlands Ranch. Upon arrival downtown, she needed a shower and a change of clothes. Her ride home after a full day of work was exhausting. She considered the question, how do I continue to bike downtown without all the inconvenience? Enter Voltaire Cycles, an electric mobility shop opened by Lori and her husVoltaire owners Todd and Lori Logan of Highlands Ranch

band Todd in Highlands Ranch in February. E-bikes are swiftly gaining attention and popularity. Nationally, sales have increased significantly year after year, making it the fastest growing segment in bike sales. Once thought to be only for older cyclists or those with limited mobility, people of all ages are now buying e-bikes. Much like Lori, younger riders want them for commuting and running errands. The extra boost an e-bike provides after a long ride or weighed down with cargo offers an eco-friendly and healthy mode of transportation. The abundant trails in Highlands Ranch are ideal for e-bikes. Here, Gordon (2) and Sully (1) ride behind Mackenzie on the Yuba Spicy Curry V3 Cargo bike, outfitted with the hold-on bar, monkey bars, mini seat, sideboards and Yelp toddler seat. Other accessory options include a bread basket, bags and even a rain cover for passengers. Retail price as pictured is $5,350. Lori tells us, “With the long-tail frame you can take up to three little ones for an entire day of adventure. With an available range of 30-60 miles, depending on level assist, know that when it is time to head home you have a little bit of boost to get up those hills to end a day of fun on a good note. Smiles for all!”

LINE HOPS: Rapid response drills activate the central nervous system for performance at top speed. Take an athletic stance in front of a line, such as crack in the sidewalk or pavement. Hop over and back as fast as possible for 5-10 seconds.

THE STEP-UP: Stonger

03.

THE BROAD JUMP: Jumping teaches your body how to handle downward force, which builds explosive leg power. Start with your feet shoulder width with arms straight up in the air. Drop into a squat, swing arms down and back as far as you can. Swing your arms the opposite direction and throw your body forward hard and fast. Stick the landing.

similar stories over the years. So many in fact, he became known as a “phenom maker.” Now in its third year, Phenom Phactory grew out of what Sean witnessed his dad give to community kids every day. “I took what my dad did for us and put some structure to it and expand it,” Sean says. In partnership with Panorama Wellness and Sports Institute, Phenom Phactory provides football skills training, as well as speed and agility training for organizations like Cherry Creek High School’s football program. They work with the Denver Foundation to provide scholarships. Having kids from all walks of life train together bridges the gap “Everybody feels like they are on a level playing field and can understand each other’s perspective,” Sean says. Steve Hess, former director of performance for the Denver Nuggets and now at Panorama, says Sean has developed a unique football program that works with athletes not just on strength and conditioning but on football intelligence. “Phenom Factory at Panorama Wellness and Sports Institute further separates themselves from other programs as they utilize revolutionary objective testing,” Steve says. “I highly recommend this program.” Sean says his athletes learn that their commitment on the field is an investment in themselves, for the long haul, and not about instant gratification. All the athletes learn the “life skills that come from playing sports; time management, dealing with adversity, teamwork, perseverance.” Because ultimately, whether a student athlete plays recreational football, at a D1 university or in the NFL, these are the skills that lead to success. @POSHLITTLEOINKLETS. Lisa Roedel, Arnold and Pearl’s human, watched the show Green Acres from her childhood home in Acres Green. That was how she decided to someday she’d have pigs of her own. Don’t be fooled, these little cuties are small now, but American mini pigs can grow to 150 lbs. Lisa knows exactly what she is in for, these pigs can live 12-14 years. She did her research on how to care for them over their whole lives, creating a pig pen area and outside space for them. She plans to continue to highlight them on Instagram even as they get bigger. Pearl is the smaller of the two, she loves dressing up, taking baths and cuddling. Arnold is proving to be quite smart and agile. Inspired by the Tik Tok craze in which dogs jump over toilet paper, Lisa taught Arnold to jump toilet paper too. This exploded their followership to over 28k. Find them on @poshlittleoinklets and @pearlandarnold on Tik Tok.
