A tent by the lake TWO YEARS AGO MY HUSBAND AND I PACKED UP OUR TRUCK AND HEADED NORTH FOR THE WEEKEND. We found a picture perfect spot beside Lake Mary Ronan in the Flathead Valley and rushed the dogs down to the beach. The sand was warm and the water was cool. With a good push from my husband I was several yards out on a raft with our littlest dog bobbing on my lap as the gentle waves moved us closer and further from shore. It was heavenly bliss. The cover image, provided by our featured artist Adrienne Langer, made me pull this memory like a file from the drawer. There's something about an open flame, not knowing what time it is, and a tent that billows with the cool summer breeze. It's a good-for-the-soul type of adventure, even if you're not much of a camper. I encourage you to do it anyway. Pack the book you've been meaning to read, line up your s'more materials, and don't keep track of how many you've eaten.

A Burning Idea WHAT WE CAN LEARN THROUGH WILDFIRE AWARENESS
ARTICLE SHELBY HUMPHREYS PHOTOGRAPHY OPEN LENS BY PAMELA
WHEN A TRAIL OF SMOKE RISES FROM FOREST PINES ABOVE MISSOULA, WORRY IGNITES. Questions and concerns needle out like a larch in spring. Are they doing a controlled burn? Is it a wildfire? Will those houses be safe? Most residents know about creating defensible spaces around homes to keep property safe. Now, thanks to a cadre of officials working across agency jurisdictions, Missoula homeowners have even quicker, less expensive options. 14

Maxwell explained why. “When a vulnerable home ignites, that ignition has the potential to carry the fire to a neighboring structure and throughout the community. It can cause structure-to-structure ignitions that are separate from the wildfire itself,” Maxwell said. To protect homes, he recommends a strategy called “home hardening.” “There’s simple things a homeowner can do. You can lay down concrete pavers. Even something as easy as putting screens over vents to block embers can make a difference,” he added. Eric Mendelson worked with Maxwell and was surprised to learn that treating his property didn’t require sacrificing attractive landscapes. “At first, I was scared they would tell me all of my trees had to come down. nanny goals BIG SKY NANNY IS A TRUSTED PLACE TO FIND RELIABLE CHILDCARE ARTICLE AMANDA KRIEG PHOTOGRAPHY OPEN LENS BY PAMELA
MEETING SUSANNE TORPEY FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. I was nervous, anxious, and somewhat skeptical. I had read and re-read her online profile a hundred times before asking her to meet over coffee. No, this wasn’t a dating site. It was a nanny service and I was desperate to find somebody that could help me care for my then 12-month-old. I had no family here in Montana, no friends that could refer somebody, and up to that point I had been my daughter’s only caregiver. I needed help but how could I trust a complete stranger? Fast forward to today and Susanne is still very much a part of my family. She has cared for both my daughters, she has traveled with us and she has even worked in our family business. I have the most precious collection of gifts that she helped the girls create for me over the years—gifts that preserve their various ages and phases. She is kind, caring and somehow always knows just what is needed. She is, without a doubt, the first person I trust my kids with. So I guess you can say meeting for coffee really worked out. Was it a huge risk to trust a website with my child? Was I worried about inviting an unknown person into my home? Working with an agency is more comfortable than you might imagine. Today, Susanne is making that process even more comfortable through her own Big Sky Nanny placement agency. 18
Missoula Valley Lifestyle | July 2020
She knew early on that she wanted to work with children in some capacity. After earning her degree in Early Childhood Education, Susanne accepted a nanny position that was meant to be a temporary job until she could decide how to use that degree. Instead, she found her purpose. She loved the close bond that she was able to form with not only the children I cared for, but the family as a whole. She felt appreciated and loved and ended up being part of the families she worked for. In the past 18 years, she has worked with a total of five families (one of which she still nannies for 13 years later). Since taking her first position in 2002 she has learned a lot and she’s applying that to the benefit of both Missoula families and nannies. Susanne said, “My number one goal is to take the time to listen and learn what each family needs and expects out of a nanny or babysitter and to get to know each nanny we work with as much as I can so I can make the family/nanny match as strong as possible.” Susanne recalls working with the placement agency years ago.

NANNY GOALS (CONTINUED)
“I appreciated the time the owner spent learning about me and finding a family that was a good match,” said Susanne. While it’s important to satisfy a family’s needs, it’s equally important to satisfy a nanny’s. “My experience working as a nanny has taught me how important a strong relationship is between a family and their nanny. They need to have the same parenting beliefs and philosophies, similar lifestyles, and communicate well together.” Big Sky Nanny accomplishes this mission through an extensive application, interview, and pre-screening process on both the caregivers’ and the families’ parts. This process includes background checks and required CPR & First Aid certifications for nannies as well. They have been so successful in their process and placements that Susanne has recently hired a full-time employee to assist with the operations. Susanne also recognizes that not every family is looking for a full-time nanny. Some, like me, may simply want consistent care a couple of afternoons a week. Some are not even looking for a nanny, they are looking for the occasional babysitter. In fact, Big Sky Nanny has recently expanded its babysitting services to include the rare night out, hotel and vacation sitters, summer sitters, event supervision, and more. Families simply create a membership profile on BSN’s website, choose a package that meets their needs, review sitters’ profiles, and then click to schedule dates and times. “This service offers busy Missoula families an extremely easy and efficient way to find quality babysitters they can feel comfortable working with,” said Susanne. Our sitters are not only experienced and qualified to meet each family’s needs, but they are trained to go above and beyond the family’s expectations to provide superior service.” Susanne’s Big Sky Nanny is truly all about peace of mind, for families and nannies. She wants the process of trusting your children with a new sitter to be easy and comfortable. She wants nannies and sitters to develop bonds with their families that will last a lifetime and for that match to be more than an online profile.
“This service offers busy Missoula families an extremely easy and efficient way to find quality babysitters they can feel comfortable working with.” 20

“Elwood was taking Scouts rafting before people were really doing that at all,” Colin explained. “In college, my dad got a job as a guide. He had the skill set that a lot of people didn’t have at that time.” Jerry and his wife, Carole, founded HRE in 1976. HRE guides groups on the Selway and Salmon rivers in Idaho with a season beginning in June and running through October. Colin grew up on the river, learning the ropes of rafting and the family business at a young age.

LOCAL’S CHOICE
DEAR SUMMER READER CATCHING UP ON MUST-READ TITLES ARTICLE CHELSEA LYN AGRO NO SUMMER IS COMPLETE WITHOUT HAVING FINISHED A GOOD (I MEAN REALLY GOOD) BOOK. There’s something delicious about cracking the stiff spine for the first time and catching ourselves laughing, crying, or finding our deep truths through the flip of a page. Here are a few must-reads to beat the heat with this summer:
Untamed
Normal People
by Glennon Doyle
by Sally Rooney
In her most revealing and powerful book yet, the beloved activist, speaker, and author of the bestselling sensations Love Warrior and Carry On, Warrior explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and start trusting the voice deep within us. Glennon was finally hearing her own voice—the voice that had been silenced by decades of cultural conditioning, numbing addictions, and institutional allegiances. This was the voice of the girl Glennon had been before the world told her who to be. She vowed to never again abandon herself. She decided to build a life of her own—one based on her individual desire, intuition, and imagination. She would reclaim her true, untamed self.

Sally Rooney brings her brilliant psychological acuity and perfectly spare prose to a story that explores the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship. At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers - one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years in college, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.
Magnolia Table, Volume 2: A Collection of Recipes for Gathering Following the launch of her #1 New York Times bestselling cookbook, Magnolia Table, and seeing her family’s own sacred dishes being served at other families’ tables across the country, Joanna Gaines gained a deeper commitment to the value of food being shared. This insight inspired Joanna to get back in the kitchen and start from scratch, pushing herself beyond her comfort zone to develop new recipes for her family, and yours, to gather around. A sneaky taste of what’s inside, in case you haven’t been using these recipes since springtime: Mushroom-Gruyére, Quiche, Pumpkin, Cream, Cheese, Bread, Grilled, Bruschetta, Chicken, Zucchini-Squash, Strata, Chicken-Pecan-Asparagus, Casserole, Stuffed, Pork Loin, Lemon-Lavender, Tart, Magnolia, Press Chocolate Cake
