region. Our feature story this month is a summer bucket list, complete with a playalong Bingo game. Some items on the checklist are old favorites, but others will hopefully be new to you. Take photos as you visit the places and participate in our social media contest for a chance to win a great prize. If you don’t want to travel far from home this summer, we found a great alternative. We hit the road to explore some of southern Ohio’s most historic outdoor sites, including the Serpent Mound and the Miamisburg Mound. “Porching” has become more popular than ever as friends and neighbors look for safe ways to socialize. OUR TOWN
summer 2020 bucket list PLAY LOCAL-LANDMARK BINGO WHILE GOING ON A STAYCATION EXPLORATION ARTICLE LAURA LEAVITT PHOTOGRAPHY ERIC WILBER AND PROVIDED
SUMMER DAYS SLIP THROUGH OUR FINGERS, WITH SWEET EVENINGS OF BLOWING BUBBLES IN THE YARD OR WATCHING FIREFLIES FLIT BY. Free time and plenty of warm weather are a great recipe for outdoor fun while still learning new facts about the natural world and new skills for staying active. However, there are certainly summer days that crawl by, especially if your children are running out of ideas of their own. One way to make summer fun is a twist that school teachers use all the time: when you turn activities and trips into a game, you can add anticipation and accomplishment to the fun. Play this Summer Bingo game to get your family out and about this summer, enjoying our townships and the areas around them. We wanted to combine fun with learning, and encourage relaxing as well as adventurous experiences. We hope that you’ll learn even more about what our community has to offer and maybe revisit a few spots that you’ve been meaning to get back to since the last time you enjoyed them. Compete against friends or neighbors to see who can cover their bingo board first! Chatting about your experiences across the picket fence or around a summer campfire is just another added bonus.

dig for geological treasure at trammel fossil park Does your child gobble up shows and books about dinosaurs and geology? Trammel Fossil Park near Sharonville is a unique destination for you and your family to dig in the dirt and keep any fossils you find. There are educational displays and plenty to see, though the terrain is rocky, so plan on very sturdy shoes for this day. Overcast days may be your best bet since much of the park is not shaded, but definitely slather on that sunscreen if you choose a sunny day! Sharonville.org
rent a boat at VOA park Kayaking and canoeing is a fun way to push your arm strength while exploring a water ecosystem, looking at fish and frogs. Voice of America Park offers rentals of a variety of kinds of boats on their lake, allowing you to paddle or row around the lake and enjoy the views of the rest of the park. Bring a picnic and walk the loop to make a whole day out of this Bingo square. YourMetroParks.net
taste the cool treats at le macaron Hot days call for something sweet and cool, and you’ll find it at Le Macaron at Liberty Center. At our locally-owned stop for macarons, you can also get delicious gelato in a wide range of flavors including chocolate, caramel, pistachio and more. French gelato is thicker and more custard-like than traditional ice cream – a perfect indulgent treat. Consider making this stop in your journey a celebration for a family birthday or a way to cool off after a particularly warm adventure day. Lemacaron-us.com 24

take aim at the reserves park disc golf course Have you tried disc golf before? Small frisbee discs are used to try to hit metal targets that contain chain lengths that help to capture the disc. Precision is key on the Reserves Park 9-hole course, where you can try different techniques to get your disc to the target in the fewest possible throws. This game is a great option for older kids and teens. Discs are available at sporting goods stores, and while you can choose a variety of weights, you can have plenty of fun with only a few discs. take a hike in gilmore metropark or wetlands park Our local area has many county and township parks that offer walking paths and nature to explore. Wetlands park includes an asphalt trail beside woods, open fields, and even a playground dinosaur. Gilmore MetroPark, just outside Liberty Township, offers a walk on the wild side, starting on the boardwalk that takes you through a shady wetland where creatures, including hundreds of crayfish, can be seen. Birds and squirrels frequent the unpaved path through the forest. YourMetroParks.net
enjoy live music at union centre Outdoors is a great place to join others for a night on the town this summer, especially when open-air concerts at The Takeover on The Square @ Union Centre can offer so much amusement while staying a safe distance from fellow concert-goers. test your strength at sharon woods’ parcours trail Sharon Woods has a new twist on the classic walk in the park since their Parcours Trail features stations with new physical challenges every 100 yards or so. Rather than just exercising your leg muscles, test your ability to do pull-ups, jump from step to step, stretch to reach and balance on balance beams. It makes walking just that much more enjoyable, and afterward, there’s still lots of nature to explore in the many other parts of Sharon Woods. GreatParks.org/parks/sharon-woods

RENOVATE & REFINE LOCAL DESIGN BLOGGER SHARES TECHNIQUES FOR CREATING INVITING OUTDOOR SPACES
TWO YOUNG, BLOND TODDLERS STAND ON A PORCH, PULLING ON A ONESIE THAT SAYS “TIE BREAKER” AS THEIR PARENTS TAKE PHOTOS FOR THEIR BABY ANNOUNCEMENT, WELCOMING THEIR THIRD CHILD INTO THE MIX SOON. It’s one of many scenes that have unfolded as Liberty Township residents Rachael and her husband Garret navigate suburban life with their beautifully designed porch as their backdrop to everyday life. The Youngs used to take photos from their porch of their kids in the yard, but now they’ve flipped the scene. They realize that their porch is already the perfect way to document memorable moments, from the baby announcement to first day of school photos. “It’s a clean backdrop...it’s way more personal to do it on your own front door,”

Rachael says. “You might as well decorate your porch.” Decorate, she has. Rachael loves interior (and porch) designing so much that she has started to document her progress on her new blog, First House on Finn, FirstHouseonFinn.com. The family has participated in one room challenges, which involve redecorating a room in just eight weeks, and the porch is no exception. Three rugs of various sizes and textures welcome visitors in the front door, and two rustic black rockers are decorated with seasonal pillows. “I wanted a different wreath every season and holiday,” Rachael says, laughing about the wreath wall she has in her garage. “I love the 30-inch big ones.” She changes the flowers and pots seasonally, and decorates on a repurposed indoor ladder. She finds artificial plants to be easier to maintain on her covered porch. While she calls her current style “modern farmhouse,” she aspires to incorporate more texture, Bohemian styles and macramé, which she says are more in style now. Throughout the shelter-in-place orders during the pandemic, the front porch was the meeting place for neighbors, friends and family. Check out these ways to make your own porch a haven this summer. 28

LOCALS CELEBRATE THE OPENING OF LIBERTY TOWNSHIP’S NEW ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
A view of the new building during the final phase of construction.
AS LIBERTY TOWNSHIP’S POPULATION HAS STEADILY INCREASED OVER THE YEARS, THE WAY IN WHICH THE TOWNSHIP SERVES THE COMMUNITY HAS EVOLVED. From personnel and building permits to safety services, parks and trails, many services have increased. A 2008 Facilities Master Plan first identified the concept of an expanded administration facility to meet the community’s growing needs. The new 15,000 square foot Liberty Township Administration and Police Substation facility allows for a more centralized and visible location for the community’s residents, businesses and visitors. Employees will move in during July. “Significant time and due diligence went into this project,” says Liberty Township Administrator Kristen Bitonte. “We reviewed several Township-owned sites and performed cost analysis to ensure we were maximizing the Township dollars, and we liked this site at Carriage Hill because it provides that central access.” The facility, located along State Route 747 between Princeton and Millikin Roads, features a large public meeting space, complete with state-of-the-art technology and enhanced visuals. Currently, the public meeting space is in a separate facility which “makes it challenging and can cause confusion with the public,” Kristen explains. According to Liberty Township Trustee President Christine Matacic, the new single-story structure has historical architectural features like a pitched roof, deep overhangs and decorative brackets reminiscent of the Hughes Railroad Station depot from the early 1900s. “The administration and police substation building will take on the life of our community,” says Christine. “Not only the present, but also it’s exciting to see a taste of our history on display. Photos of the Hughes Railroad Station were utilized in coming up with the design and historical storyboards have been incorporated.” The Township team plans to host a community Open House on October 10 so all residents can check out the new Liberty Township facility.
