SAVORING THE WINES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE

FROM THE PYRÉNÉES MOUNTAINS TO THE ROLLING BLUE MEDITERRANEAN SEA, TO THE WINDING RHÔNE RIVER AND CHALKY PLATEAUS, SOUTHERN FRANCE’S SCENIC BEAUTY IS HOME TO THE LARGEST WINE-PRODUCING AREA IN THE WORLD, WITH OFFERINGS AS DIVERSE AS THEIR RENOWNED LANDSCAPES. Wines, in a range of styles, such as aromatic whites, fruit-bursting rosés and rich, bold reds, are here, just waiting to be discovered. Additionally, the South of France is home to decadent sweet wines and sparkling ones. Limoux’s village holds claim to the first sparkling wine, the result of overzealous corking by Benedictine Monks at the Abbey Saint Hilaire in 1531, a full generation before the first corks ever popped in the Champagne area of Northern France. Thankfully, we won’t need a passport to enjoy some of these wines. They are as close as your nearest Frederick wine shop, so let’s cruise along the famous coastline to explore a few. The sun-drenched Occitanie area includes Languedoc, Roussillon, Cahors and dozens of other villages in the southern third of France. This vast region is primarily known as a red wine producing area, but white wines also flourish here.

OF LAURIENZO’S RESTAURANTS IN MOUNT AIRY AND HYATTSTOWN. Jay, the son of an Italian immigrant, had a dream. Growing up in a large family with nine children, he knows a little about feeding a crowd and offering hospitality. So, it would seem natural that he would go into the restaurant business. “Hospitality, for me, is innate. I wanted a field with excitement and energy, and restaurants were that for me,” says Jay. Jay cut his teeth inside other restaurant chains for 20 years before following his dream to open his own place and christen it with his family name. He invited his brother, Bruce, who was working at a restaurant in New York, to come alongside. In 2006, Bruce and Jay opened their first restaurant in Mount Airy, with the interior built out by their brother, Brad. Soon after, there was a devastating fire that completely consumed the building. “There was never a doubt. Without hesitation, we decided to reopen, and that move put us on Main Street in Mount Airy, where we are now,” says Jay. “We say we rose from the ashes like a Phoenix. And we followed that by opening what we call the little brother concept, a fast-casual restaurant in Hyattstown that has a smaller menu and, of course, our woodfired-oven pizza.” 22

“We’ve been through so much. We survived the downturn in the economy in 2008 while we were trying to rebuild and, at the same time, still trying to grasp what was next for our family restaurant. We kept our passion alive and our drive to move forward. We have had to adapt to the changes that have come along. Covid happened, and we had to adjust again and adapt. So, whatever our awesome community still wants from us, we will provide,” says Jay. Angela says, “I know it has taken so much hard work for him to be where he is. Knowing that he persisted, it is inspiring to me and motivational. My brothers, Joey and Nicky, feel the same way. Through the tough times, he leaned on his dream. That’s what has gotten him through those challenges; that and the love of his family.” “There is a lot of passion within the Laurienzo family. We’ve passed it down to our kids, the passion of humor, laughter, working hard, enjoying good food and drink, wanting to serve and provide an experience for others,” says Jay. “My mother taught me to have candles burning and jazz music playing to create the full experience. We brought that to the Laurienzo family business, and that is what sets us apart,” says Jay. “We like to say; everyone is welcome around the table.” LBOCPizza.com

Yorkshire Pudding an English Tradition

IS IT SAVORY OR SWEET? IT’S BOTH!

ARTICLE KELSEY WARD AND RHONDA STEPHENS

HARRY POTTER AND FRIENDS HAVE EATEN IT. It is mentioned in several of Charles Dickens’ tales, too. Quintessentially British and not necessarily a dessert, recipes of this dish appear as early as the 1700s. So, what are we talking about? Yorkshire pudding. Americans think of pudding as a rich, creamy chocolaty dessert. Yorkshire pudding is far from that. Also called “Toad in the Hole,” this dish hails from Northern England. It is a familiar sidekick to a traditional Sunday Roast and is versatile enough to stand on its own when filled with savory bits such as meats and root vegetables. These delicate delights may also be filled with jam or syrup to serve as dessert. Yorkshire pudding recipes are found as early as the 17th century in England. In America, popovers are our version of Yorkshire pudding and made their cookbook debut in 1876. The main difference between the two is that Yorkshire pudding is typically baked in a pan greased with the roast drippings. Yorkshire pudding isn’t exactly what the name implies; however, the savory browned popover certainly is delicious. Whether you call it Yorkshire pudding or popovers, enjoy them as appetizers or with gravy for dinner. And be sure to savor directly from the oven to capture them at their best.

Setting the Standard for Movie-Going

A CINEMA WITH HEATED RECLINING SEATS, STATE OF THE ART PROJECTION AND SOUND THAT SERVES GOURMET FOODS IN FREDERICK? Yes, please! One of the coolest places in town, Warehouse Cinemas, opened its doors in September amid much anticipation. The cinemas, founded by HighRock Studios and Greg Mills, bring a luxury experience to the Golden Mile inside the old Frederick Town Mall. Rich Daughtridge, founder and CEO of HighRock Studios, says, “We really liked this location; however, this was going to be a Walmart, so it wasn’t available. We continued to look around Frederick for a location that would suit our vision.” “While on the airplane returning from a business trip, I received an email from Richard Griffin, the Director of Economic Development for the City of Frederick. He knew we were looking for a space and emailed to let us know the mall had become available again. We met with him immediately and went to see it.” “Walking through it, it was intimidating. It was a mess. You have to be able to have vision to see through all of the debris and the design of the former mall. We had to gut everything and completely rebuild it,” Daughtridge says. Greg Mills, co-founder, and COO was entirely responsible for the construction project and equipment and getting the team on board. “This mall shut down in 2012, and lots of things popped up. It was a challenge from day one- from leaks to undersized electrical service; there was a whole host of issues but, it turned out better than I could have imagined,” says Mills. Daughtridge says, “Our vision for Warehouse Cinemas was to introduce a different way of movie-going. For us, this is the way movie-going should be. It is an experience that is not only about the movie; it transcends that. It is about coming and spending time with people you care about. So, this dream was more about creating something for the community that allows people to make memories. And that drives all the ways we do customer service.”

“As far as design, we wanted to create a space that felt more like a brewery or a winery. The goal was to make it a place where you want to hang out. The design evolved into modern industrial or what some call eco-modern. We used brightly colored sea containers as doors to the ten theaters and for the bar. Modern industrial wood accents are interspersed throughout and bring an element of warmth,” he says. More than a pretty face, Warehouse Cinemas intends to blow you away with the extraordinary viewing experience. In addition to the leather recliners with seat warmers and tray tables, all the theaters have 4K projectors, the latest Dolby 7.1 sound, and theater #6 is a step up with Dolby Atmos sound. According to Dolby.com, “In a Dolby Atmos theater, every speaker- as many as 64 total- is powered independently and gets its own separate audio feed. In effect, each speaker is its own zone.” Not only do the theaters have amazing immersive sound, but all the theaters also have the immersive SkyVUE™ technology. “With SkyVUE™, we optimized the angle of the screen and tilted it to 10 degrees for best viewing. It has never been done before. We have a patent-pending on the design, which is the relationship between the floor-typically flat or sloped, the angle of the screen, and the recliner’s angle. Our patent has diagrams representing all these different angles coming together to create SkyVUE™,” explains Daughtridge. Food is central to the movie-going experience, but at Warehouse, the food is anything but typical movie theater fare. Warehouse Cinemas has free refills on drinks and popcorn and sets a high bar with real butter. “We know it’s more expensive, but it’s so much better. We want people to have an extraordinary experience and it’s the small things that all add up,” says Daughtridge. Food and Beverage Manager, Mack McKinstry, says, “We have the perfect combination of an elevated gourmet offering, but it is simple enough that we can do it quickly. We have classic comfort foods with a twist. Our menu consists of gourmet grilled cheeses and gourmet flatbreads, movie night bites, chicken street nachos with signature beer cheese, fried mac and cheese bites, and more.” An equally impressive drink menu is needed to complement the gourmet fare. Patrons are in luck because Warehouse Cinemas boasts 28 taps of local beers from Frederick and surrounding counties, while the bar features signature cocktails and wine. “This is an experience that you cannot get anywhere else. I am extremely proud to be a part of this organization that has taken a cinema experience and made it unlike anything else. They have set a standard for what cinemas are going to look like in the future,” says McKinstry. WarehouseCinemas.com

GIVING BACK

Nourishing Hearts as Well as Stomachs FOR MANY, THE GREATER URBANA AREA FOOD BANK IS A LIFELINE

ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS

WHEN JO OTSBY MENTIONED TO HER PASTOR THAT SHE THOUGHT THE FOOD DONATION PROGRAM COULD USE A LITTLE HELP, SHE DID NOT EXPECT HIS RESPONSE. He said, “Well, go do something.”

Real estate agent, Ryk Palmer and colleagues, collected food to donate to the food bank.

“So, I did,” she says. For the past 29 years, the Greater Urbana Food Bank has served the needy in the community under Jo’s leadership. “The Food Bank receives referrals of prescreened families

Ongoing Needs

from local schools, principals, counselors and social workers. It meets a basic but critical need in the southeast portion of Frederick County. During the pandemic, the food bank filled the gap for 150 students who were no longer receiving free breakfasts and free lunches at school. It also helps active duty and veteran military personnel, men, women, children, those who have addictions and are alcoholics, are unemployed and terminally ill. We serve 259 families every month; that’s over 800 men, women and children who solely rely upon us for food,” says Jo.

Along the way, Jo learned that, by the time people were referred to the food bank, they were in dire straits. It wasn’t simply food they needed. Many were behind in their bills, had foregone medical and dental attention, were without transportation and had clothing needs. “Yes, it was great that we were giving food to them, but they needed so much more from us. In every area of life, they needed help. So, we asked of the community, and they met the need. And they continue to provide everything to take the stress out of these people’s lives,” says Jo. “We provide full Thanksgiving meals, gifts for Christmas, Easter baskets, 32

baby equipment, clothing, diapers, furniture and school supplies. I don’t know how it’s going to work this year because the gifts come from the community and the schools.” The donations come to the food bank through community sponsorship such as schools, churches, individuals, local businesses and sports teams. Each week, Giant donates food and participates in an ongoing donation program with a cart by the door designated for food donation drop off. With Jo’s oversight, the food bank thrives. And because it is within her home, she fills her days serving others. “As a three-time breast cancer survivor, this is my reason to get off the couch. If I didn’t have this, I don’t know how it would have gone. I had people depending on me, waiting for me to get back up on my feet, and I did. I knew I was needed and that what I do is important. For me, this has been pretty much everything,” says Jo. Find them at GreaterUrbanaAreaFoodBank.org or search them on Facebook. CityLifestyle.com/Frederick
