Amanda Simcoe | amanda.simcoe@lifestylepubs.com

We Are Thankful to You All. HISTORIC DISTRICT LIFESTYLE CELEBRATED THE LAUNCH OF OUR PUBLICATION RECENTLY. I wanted to send a special thank you to Cayla Lewis, Lisa Escalon and The Board of Preservation Oklahoma for opening up the Overholser Mansion and taking the time to give our guests a special tour for the evening. Lori Burson and her team at Stella did an amazing job with the food and cocktails served with flair and professionalism. The floral arrangements from Trochta’s were beautiful. They are such a pleasure to work with. James and Charito Voyles with Iconic Motors are always willing to help us and lend the perfect classic automobiles when we need them. Their 1947 Cadillac Convertible and 1959 Mercedes Convertible brought life to our incredible venue. The Band of Will kept us entertained and delighted throughout the night. I had to have them when I saw them perform in The Book of Will at Oklahoma Shakespeare.

I reached out to Tyler Woods, and he connected me with Aiesha and Daniel. They formed a band, and ours was their first gig. This labor of love could not be possible without the talent and dedication of our editorial coordinator, Amanda Simcoe, along with photographers AJ Stegall, Ryan West, Charlie Neunschwander and Josh Officer. Their creativity, vision and commitment make putting each issue together so satisfying. Our team truly cares and collaborates, which I believe shows in the work we produce.

Our advertisers underwrite our mission, and I am forever grateful. Thank you for believing in my vision and committing to me when all I had was a glossy media kit, a sample magazine and a dream. I hope we continue to surpass your expectations and our partnerships are long and fruitful. Our focus is to grow to 72 pages by the time we reach the anniversary of our first issue in July 2020. A larger magazine allows us to tell more stories and highlight what inspires us in our community. Our team is thankful for you all!

SAVORING THE FLAVORS AND CULTURE OF THE CRESCENT CITY

THE HECTIC HOLIDAY SEASON IS THE PERFECT TIME OF YEAR FOR A QUICK GETAWAY. For some, that involves a beach and an umbrella drink. For me, it means food, drink and exploring the culture of other cities, particularly those with a rich history. One of my very favorites is New Orleans. On this visit, we had just two short days to soak up what the Crescent City—nicknamed for the shape of the bend of the Mississippi River—has to offer. My first stop upon arrival is always chargrilled oysters. Gulf oysters covered in garlic butter, Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs, grilled over open flames to get just the right amount of char from the flare-up as some of the butter drips into the fire. I've tried many of the notable versions in town (I try to sample at least five or six versions per visit) and keep coming back to the same top few. This time, there was no question; Felix's took the No. 1 spot. Adequate crispy cheesy topping, but not so much that you lose the oyster underneath. 739 Iberille, Fleixs.com If you are into the history and culture of a city, I recommend taking a walking tour. I booked through Airbnb since I have purchased "experiences" through the site in the past. Our guide, Brian, was both entertaining and informative. We walked through town learning the history CONTINUED >

of the French Quarter before arriving at St. Louis Cemetary No. 1. You must have a tour guide to be admitted to the cemetery. The Catholic church owns it, and in the interest of preservation, they require all visitors to have a licensed escort. You can find a guide at the gate, but the groups are usually larger, and you may not get as much background information. I suggest booking a smaller tour (10 or fewer) for a more personal visit. AirBnb.com After seeing some notable tombs (including Marie Laveau), it is time for dinner. Run, don't walk to Mr. B's Bistro and order

the Gumbo Yay-Ya and the barbecue shrimp. Yes, you are going to have (and want) to wear a paper bib. From the first saucecovered shrimp that you pull apart, you will understand why. This French Quarter Brennan family institution is celebrating 40 years this year, and deservedly so. My favorite way to enjoy New Orleans is a "progressive dining" adventure. After enjoying shrimp and gumbo, we headed over to the most famous of the family's group of restaurants, Brennan's for my favorite childhood dessert, bananas Foster. "Drunk Bananas," as my mother calls it, was invented at Brennan's in 1951. It has since drawn countless visitors for the tableside flambee spectacle. You can order it in the bar, along with a cocktail or glass of wine. A server will bring a cart to your table to prepare the dish as they tell the story of its origin. 201 Royal St., MrBsBistro.com; 417 Royal St., BrennansNewOrleans.com After sleeping off our day of travel and food, we made our way to Jackson Square for a breakfast of beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe Du Monde. As usual, there are musicians entertaining customers just outside of the patio. If you stroll along the outside of the square, you will find artists showcasing their work. 800 Decatur St., CafeDuMonde.com Next, we headed to the French Market District. The market was founded as a Native American trading post before European colonization and now covers six blocks of the French Quarter near the river. It is the oldest of its kind in the United States. Across from the market shops, you will find Central Grocery, the birthplace of the muffaletta sandwich. Go early, because the line will wind out the door by noon. Luckily, they have them ready to go whether you want to dine in or take it across the street to Crescent Park. 923 Decatur St., CentralGrocery.com After lunch, we headed back toward the other end of the French Quarter, where antique shops and art galleries line the streets. After shopping, it is time for dinner. A happy hour stop at French 75, the bar attached to Arnaud's, means 24

soufflé potatoes and gougères. The cocktail program is recognized by the James Beard Foundation, and upstairs they have a Mardi Gras museum offering a glimpse into the spectacle of Kings and Queens of the annual festival. After enjoying bar snacks, we headed down the street listening to the music from a parade, one of many you will likely see passing through the French Quarter. We might have stopped back into Felix's for another couple dozen oysters, but I know you won't judge. OTHER FAVORITE FOOD FINDS, BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE OF THE FRENCH QUARTER: Crabby Jack's – Get the duck po'boy; you'll thank me later. 428 Jefferson Highway, CrabbyJacksNola.com Clancy's – A fine dining restaurant full of locals, for a reason. 6100 Annunciation St., ClancysNewOrleans.com DatDog – With three locations in NOLA, DatDog offers inventive dogs in a casual atmosphere. I love the build-your-own with duck sausage, blue cheese and blackberry sauce. DatDog.com Coop's Place – Coop's is where you get your etoufee. Near the French Market and Central Grocery. 1109 Decatur St., CoopsPlace.net

Historic District Lifestyle | November 2019

WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THE WORD "THANKFUL," MANY THINGS COME TO MIND. Friends, family, success and health are just a few that usually fill the list. Last month when Bobby and I first started discussing the "Thankful" issue, it was obvious to us what has filled our hearts this year. We launched a magazine. When I say "we," most people assume that in addition to the team at the Lifestyle Publications corporate office, I mean Bobby, Steve and myself. "We" are so much more than the three of us. Our team includes immensely talented photographers, without whom we would not be able to tell the stories that we so love to tell. Our team involves our community. The events, fundraisers, professionals, exhibitions, galleries, restaurants and theater productions are what make the urban core so special. For our team and our community, we are thankful. Our partners are absolutely irreplaceable. From our advertisers to those who open up their venues to us, we could not do what we do without those friendships. Friends who share their stories, talents, Amanda Jane Simcoe, Brandon Burt, Bobby Mathis and Steve Richards

dreams and visions for the future of our city with us are what make this magazine happen. For all of those friends, we are thankful. Then there are "our people." We would be remiss if we failed to thank them. Bobby and I frequently joke that it's a good thing that we are cute. It's actually not vanity, but a lighthearted acknowledgment that we know it isn't easy being married to this magazine. While Steve is very much an active part of this team, he also has a full-time job on top of our day-to-day antics. When Bobby calls in an emergency "Hey, honey ..." favor, he shows up. I have one of those inexplicably patient husbands as well. As one of the owners of Suburban Contemporary Furnishings, Brandon Burt had no idea what he was getting himself into when he married a crazy magazine writer/editor/chef. CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

(CON TI N U ED)

I understand that most husbands don't get calls that involve requests like "Hey, I know that it is still October, but I need Joe Coffin, Craig Travis and Courtney Duncan

you to take down all of our Halloween decorations—and also I need the house to be ready for a Thanksgiving dinner magazine shoot—tomorrow." The man is a trooper, and without the kind of patience that Steve and Brandon offer, Bobby and I would not be able to pull this off. For them, we are thankful. We recently officially celebrated the birth of this publication. On a beautiful evening at the Overholser Mansion, one of the most spectacular venues in Oklahoma City, we welcomed our friends and community partners to toast our success. Our friends at Stella Modern Italian Cuisine provided a gorgeous spread of food and drink. The Band of Will entertained a wonderful mix of guests, and two of the amazing women of Preservation Oklahoma educated us on the history of the home. We could not have asked for a better celebration, and for that, we are thankful. To those who read our words each month and engage with our stories, we would have no reason to do what we do without you. For you, we are thankful. We look forward to the year to come and the opportunity to meet more of you out and about in our community.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Pumpkin spice, apple and warm cinnamon are scents that bring the autumn air indoors. Adding these scents to your home will create a comforting and inviting atmosphere for your family and fall guests.

MAD FOR PLAID Plaid patterns are a staple for fall. Find unique ways to pull the pattern into your decor in the form of blankets, pillows and even rugs if you’re feeling adventurous!

AU NATURALE Wicker and natural materials like wood and jute are great ways to bring the outdoors in. Create a woodsy feel with dried flowers, natural wood accents and lots of baskets—great for storing your knit blankets!

When our great state turned the corner from territory to statehood in 1907, we too began our existence as The Groves National Bank of Hollis, Oklahoma. As the years passed, the name of our bank evolved and the area we served began to grow. We’ve also grown our product offerings to better serve our customers, but we haven’t forgotten what has made us great. It’s the relationships we create with people, the partnerships we build with communities, and our belief in moving forward - together.
