Interesting fact about my mother. . . she hated to cook. But she was cursed, in her mind, with being an excellent cook/baker, which totally worked in our favor! I helped my dad plant, tend and harvest everything from sweet corn and pumpkins to Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and carrots. But his rhubarb and asparagas patches were second to none. I can still taste the fresh asparagus served with browned butter and salt. The rhubarb-custard pies were famous! Nothing was more coveted, however, than my mother's cheesecake. It was (and still is) a secret family recipe. "I can make one for you, but I cannot give you the recipe", was my mother's retort every time anyone asked her for the recipe. I mean, it is out of this world delicious. I make it regularly for friends and family and have even had people ask me to bury them with my cheesecake. Yes, it's that good. 3 Urinary Leakage in Adults

Surprising Problems

Physical Therapy Solves temporomandibular joint or TMJ. Sufferers often call their TMD problem TMJ. Dr. Staples and the physical therapists at ProHealth treat TMD with relaxation techniques that work on joint mobility and muscle strengthening exercises. In some cases, the team at ProHealth recommends dry needling, which can help treat the pain. Dr. Staples also treated a college grad student that had been experiencing headaches and jaw pain for a long time. “When he got to me, Joshua was to the point where any bite that he took to eat, his jaw would lock up. It made eating quite the challenge.” Joshua had been to multiple dentists and had orthodonture without any results. He called ProHealth. “After three sessions of physical therapy he was able to eat without his jaw locking up.”

Dr. Staples routinely sees commercials for pads for urinary leakage. And she wants the world to know this is not normal. “Urinary leakage is not a normal part of aging. And it's something that by working on the muscles, you can improve it.” Staples says that those who are experiencing incontinence can see dramatic improvement from a few sessions of physical therapy, although it may take a couple of months. Dr. Staples treated a postmenopausal lady. “Linda noticed when she does her fitness activities of walking or doing any weight lifting or when coughing or sneezing, that she leaks a little bit of urine. She talked to her family doctor about it and was referred to physical therapy. After a month of physical therapy, Linda no longer was leaking during any Scoliosis of her exercise, coughing or Children are still screened in school for sneezing.” Dr. Staples had taught Linda the right foundational exercises to perform, so scoliosis, and adults can develop it later in life. this year, ProHealth can assess for scoliosis. Catherine came to ProHealth on the referral of a chiropractor. “She walked in and her first thing that she said was that she was allergic to gravity. Her body as she's aged had shifted, and she had lost spinal integrity. It was wear and tear on the discs and the other joints, along with some bone density losses. And so she was very bent to the side, had a rounded hump on her right upper back area, near the shoulder blade.” Dr. Staples treated Catherine with several months of physical therapy, to the point where her hump disappeared and she was able to hold herself upright. After completing PT, she continued at ProHealth as a wellness client, coming in every week to do Pilates to keep her posture straight and improve her balance.

SERVICES HAS BEEN PROVIDING MUCHNEEDED SERVICES TO SENIORS IN FAYETTE COUNTY FOR 42 YEARS. The non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization helps older adults preserve their independence, improve their quality of life and keep them connected to the community. While there are many programs offered at both the Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville and The Gathering Place in Peachtree City, the program that stands on its own in the way of significance and impact is Meals on Wheels. For more than four decades meals have been making their way into the homes of local seniors 60 and better. Delivering meals to 160-178 seniors every Monday through Friday - along 15 different routes covering the entire county - is no small feat. President & CEO Nancy Meaders confirms that "as long as you live in Fayette County, we'll get you the meal." Fayette Senior Services is supported by a staff of 150-170 volunteers who solely support Meals on Wheels. The volunteer drivers use their own vehicles and resources to deliver meals to a most appreciative and expectant population. Many of these beautiful souls have been volunteering with Fayette Senior Services for years. They tell Nancy "they just love what they do." While volunteer drivers use their own vehicles for the Meals on Wheels program, Fayette Senior Services employees drive the impressive fleet of commercially wrapped vehicles to assist and help Fayette County

during an impromptu visit. Rob always takes pride in building the fire, gathering tinder and kindling beneath trees, artfully arranging the natural logs and coaxing the flames into a magical display of red and orange hues. At their grandsons’ request, Lesa and Rob serve up delicious fire-roasted sausages, hot dogs and smoky s'mores, though popping corn at the fire pit has become a new favorite. On quiet evenings, without guests, the couple of 33 years find themselves irresistibly “called” to the fire pit. Often they’ll assemble a picnic with easy eats - a charcuterie of meats, fruits and cheeses accompanied by a bottle of red vino. “Being around the fire is where we can totally be ourselves and unplug,” Lesa shares, drawing the throw around her shoulders closer. “It’s also a great place to reminisce and dream.” Sometimes, though, the couple sits hand-inhand in silence, summoned by the hypnotic dance of the flames.

Choosing Countertops with Beauty and Brawn LOCAL COUNTERTOP PROS OFFER ADVICE ON MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE

ARTICLE SUSAN WALWORTH PHOTOGRAPHY DEBBIE MCFARLAND

CHOOSING COUNTERTOPS WITH THE BRAWN TO HANDLE DAILY LIFE AND THE BEAUTY TO FIT A HOMEOWNER’S STYLE AND BUDGET CAN BE A CHALLENGE. Countertop pro Holly Davanzo, who has provided counter-

top materials for everything from RVs to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium during her 20-year career, said the most important thing homeowners should consider is use. For example, marble makes a beautiful statement, but this high-maintenance stone, which is prone to chipping and staining and requires regular

sealing, is not for everyone. “If someone has a lot of kids, a white marble is not going to bode well in their home,” Holly said. A more low-maintenance option, quartz, provides a durable, non-porous surface that doesn’t require sealing and doesn’t stain. Produced from ground quartz and resins, it comes in a variety of colors and designs. It’s what Holly has in her own kitchen. “I wanted a white countertop with movement in it that wouldn’t stain,” she said. Another durable, man-made material gaining popularity is porcelain. Unlike the porcelain tiled counters of yesteryear, Holly said this porcelain comes in slabs available in a huge range of colors.

Marble makes a beautiful, but high-maintenance countertop.

Granite with simple patterns is a good countertop choice.

Quartz is a durable countertop material available in many patterns.

Quartzite can create countertops with fluid, exotic good looks.

Long the countertop standard bearer, Holly believes granite is always a good choice. But fluid patterns or stone without much pattern at all have replaced the ubiquitous speckled, busy granite patterns. Holly also recommends quartzite for those seeking a fluid, exotic look. Although white kitchens are still popular, Holly said the newest trends are bringing color back to the kitchen with blue cabinets leading the charge. She advises choosing either the cabinet color or the countertops as the inspiration for the rest of the kitchen adding that the cabinets and countertops should match or contrast, not compete. 20

Fayette County Lifestyle | October 2020

Since countertops are a big investment, budget is another important consideration. In fact, that’s what pushed Holly into the business. While living in a South Florida home without the granite countertops she wanted but couldn’t afford, Holly started her own countertop business after learning her Italian neighbor knew how to cut and polish stone. “Where there’s a will there’s a way,” she said. Since moving to Fayette County, Holly has worked as an independent contractor through Mega Granite in Newnan. Her neighbor, Audrey Linkner became a counterpart a few years ago and together they are known as ‘The Granite Girls,’ helping customers get the look they want within their budget. Material costs range from around $30 to $90 or more per square foot. Certain edges are
