Lynne Rostochil, the leader of OKIE Mod Squad and a passionate preservationist, passed away peacefully at her home after a brave fight with cancer. We hope our tributes through the lens of those that knew her best do justice to her

work as a friend to history. We hope to show how she was a leader speaking out on behalf of preservation in our City and throughout the State. As we begin 2020, a new decade, we set goals for what we want our future selves to be and to look. We take a glance back at where we have been and what we have done, and we try to remember to extend ourselves grace and peace. January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh, and take on new challenges. So much change can happen in a year, so as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds—to grow and be human, to evolve.

Dry-brushing is said to promote healthy circulation as well as skin exfoliation. They are available with and without long handles for hardto-reach back spots.

Before stepping into my bath, I brush my skin with a dry brush. Said to increase circulation, the stiff natural bristles also help exfoliate the skin. Be sure not to over-brush since you are about to step into a hot bath full of salt. I usually brush with medium-firm pressure, from the tips of my extremities towards my heart, as is most often recommended. Go over each part of the body in short strokes, two-to-three times to a section. When I finish my relaxing soak, I moisturize well with unrefined coconut oil. Full of fatty acids, devoid of added chemicals, readily

available, and containing antibacterial properties, it is a convenient and beneficial way of finishing up my nighttime relaxation ritual. At this point, I wrap myself in a robe or warm fuzzy pajamas to allow the residual warmth to lull me off into dreamland. Don’t forget that a hot bath and tea will make you sweat (bye-bye toxins!), so be sure to keep plenty of water by your bedside should you need to rehydrate overnight. A slice of lemon and cucumber in it make a perfect refresher.

1

A detoxifying tea made from fresh ginger helps me relax in the bath. Add honey, fresh mint and lemon slices for additional flavor.

2

Healing salts and herbs help to relax after a long day. Widely available locally.

Unrefined coconut oil is a perfect straight-out-of-the-bath moisturizer. Many local grocery stores carry it. January 2020 | Historic District Lifestyle

Each client recieves a personalized consultation, complete with bloodwork.

JUST IN TIME FOR THOSE HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS, A LOCAL COLLABORATIVE WELLNESS PROGRAM HAS BECOME AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. Initially created to work hand-in-hand with hospital facilities, I2U Culinary Solutions combines the knowledge and skills of Registered Dietician and Certified Personal Trainer Brent Wilson, Dr. Steven Sands MD, and celebrated local chef Jonathan Stranger. The goal in creating the program was to begin to bridge the gap between food and medicine, reducing patients’ reliance on prescriptions. Wilson, a Certified Diabetes Educator, honed in on six dietary profiles and created menus to go hand-in-hand with healthy exercise habits to aid in the healing process. The program is currently in use at three metro-area hospitals, including Lakeside Women’s Hospital, HPI Community Hospital, and HPI Northwest Surgical Hospital, and has recently expanded to outpatient services. Dr. Sands consults with each of the facilities to enhance and improve the nutritional options throughout their inpatient stay.

“My hope with i2U is that we can slowly get away from medication as an answer for everything and begin to relieve that co-dependence from the health care model,” - BRENT WILSON For individuals wanting to address a specific health issue, or just lose weight and increase fitness, the process is straightforward. Prospective clients visit their website and fill out a simple online form. Wilson then schedules an initial consultation to discuss goals, and a nutritional assessment complete with lab work. From there, Wilson customizes a plan that combines regular check-in appointments for the first three months, a meal plan, and optional personal training sessions. Clients can add additional assistance such as guided grocery-shopping excursions, meal preparation demos and education, as well as continuing nutritional counseling.

I2U CULINARY SOLU TIONS (CONTINUED)

For clients who do not have the time to prepare all of their meals, chef Jonathan Stranger, chef/owner at En Croute, Bar Cicchetti, St. Mark’s Chop Room, and Osteria created delicious dishes that fit in with each of the six dietary profiles. Diabetic, heart-healthy, renal, vegan, vegetarian gluten-free, and non-restricted options can be ordered online for delivery weekly. Clients can choose from a few meals each week, to complete chef-driven meal plans to eliminate the need to cook entirely. One of the main advantages of the meal plan at I2U is that each dish is prepared from scratch at I2U’s kitchen, from locally-sourced ingredients, rather than shipped-in frozen from a warehouse states away. Each recipe is carefully crafted to be as delicious as it is nutritious. Wilson strongly suggests including a healthy and regular fitness program to complement the nutritional approach. Training one to three times per week is recommended, based on the needs and abilities of the client. The program is customized based on what it will take to incorporate these changes into a long-term lifestyle. The more effort that goes in determines the benefits that result. The partners created this program with the intent to empower individuals to take charge of their health, beyond the diagnosis of acute or chronic illness. They hope to create lifelong habits that will prevent future problems, increase healthful longevity, and inspire better self-care.

“I have tried every diet imaginable, including injecting myself with hCG. That really worked great until the re-feeding stage!! I gained back the 40 lbs I lost plus about 10lbs more. I’ve had gym memberships and Pilates packages and several other nutritionists in the past. Nothing has given me results like i2U. For me, I was interested in working out again and getting back into shape. I2U has the nutrition part I needed, but it also helped me with the exercise component. A 1919 HERITAGE HILLS BATH GETS A NEW DESIGN, BLENDING THE HISTORIC WITH THE MODERN.

ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES FACING DESIGNERS WORKING IN HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS IS TO GIVE THEIR CLIENTS THE UPDATED LOOK AND FEEL THAT THEY WANT, WHILE STILL RESPECTING THE INTEGRITY AND STYLE OF BEAUTIFUL HOMES THAT HAVE STOOD FOR DECADES. Jo Meacham, co-owner of Urban Kitchens, recently tackled a challenging bathroom renovation in Heritage Hills. Owners Jim and Maureen Watson wanted to update and expand the master bath in their beautiful 1919 Tudor Revival home. The layout was narrow, making it difficult to incorporate many modern conveniences. Meacham has been designing kitchens and bathrooms in historic homes for over 20 years. Many of her bathroom renovations recreate original bathroom designs, with black and white tile floors, subway tub and shower surrounds, and pedestal sinks. Others, like the Watson master bath, are a modern interpretation of the original bathroom. The bathroom, as it was, combined a combination of original and “not so original” features as Meacham put it. Two smaller upstairs rooms combined to create a larger master bedroom and bath. For extra space, Meacham incorporated a second-story sun porch into a new laundry room, as well as designed a new master closet,

Lynne with sons Will and Jack

IN NOVEMBER 2019, OKLAHOMA CITY LOST A FIERCE PRESERVATION ADVOCATE, AND SO MANY OF ITS RESIDENTS LOST A DEAR FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER. An Oklahoma City native, Deborah Lynne Rostochil was in love with mid-century architecture. Her interest stemmed from the work of her Grandfather, Architect R. Duane Conner, who inspired her passion and talent for architectural photography. Through her work with the "Okie Mod Squad," which she co-founded, and Preservation Oklahoma, Lynne met and became a friend to so many. While I was fortunate to meet Lynne Rosochil a few times at events around town, I knew that a proper tribute to her must come from those who knew and loved her well. I hope that you will enjoy these anecdotes and insights into her life, passion, and dedication to the Oklahoma City community from just a few of them.Â

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.
