But we’ve seen the same spirit in so many of you, our neighbors in Loudoun County, over the course of this pandemic. The Bible speaks of non-believers noticing how Christians behave towards one another: “See how they love one another!” Seeing this love and compassion, outsiders are compelled to ask, “Why?” We know why, deep down. We demonstrate love to each other by sharing a meal or a mask, shopping for groceries, feeding homeless kids or teaching a child because we’re all members in one way or another of the same body. Each has unique gifts they can contribute to our collective welfare. One builds roofs. One cooks, one cleans, one organizes, one prints signs, one grows food or flowers or provides a place of sanctuary when the world's challenges seem unbearable. Others help design our "new normal." As made clear in our July issue, it doesn’t

Rev. David Burnham, my pastor growing up in Akron, Ohio, was fond of saying, “Evil always overreaches.” Where sin abounds, grace does much more abound. Or, not to pull any punches, the current COVID crisis is such an obscene affront to our shared humanity that we cannot HELP but pool our resources and battle it to the last germ. Amen? If we can in some small way serve as a conduit for channeling the outpouring of your hopeful and generous support of one another during a profoundly difficult time, we’re grateful to be of service.

When it comes to selling and buying your next home, I would suggest these words—“Listen to Pam and Dave!” “Pam and Dave handled both our purchase and our sale transactions, and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the results. Their knowledge of the market, responsiveness, and attention to detail could not have been better. Even under the suboptimal (to put it mildly!) conditions of a pandemic, they safely and efficiently helped us to negotiate the purchase of our home of choice, and to prepare, market, and obtain a full-price contract on our home, all within a three-week period!” —Kieran and Katie, Happy Clients from McLean to Leesburg TO LEARN MORE, CONTACT US AT: Pamela Jones, Inc. The Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors” ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person and telephone due diligence meetings to evaluate each advisor qualitatively, a major component of a ranking algorithm that includes: client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. WHAT MOTIVATES A TRUE “GIVER” AND HOW DO YOU SPOT ONE? In our efforts to identify and spotlight businesses that are both sacrificial and authentic in their community spirit and generosity, we’ve noticed three common traits: 1. DEEP-SEATED GRATITUDE: Many philanthropists have themselves experienced need or suffered years of deprivation on their path to success, and “give back” to thank the community that helped them. 2. LONGEVITY: Giving is integrally woven into the company’s story, sometimes over decades. 3. HUMILITY: Far from hugging the limelight, it’s often impossible to find a pre-COVID photo of a business owner. In every one of these categories, Steve Gotschi, owner of DryHome Roofing & Siding, Inc., fits the bill. When he was 19, he found himself homeless. He began roofing in the early 1980’s to support his family, making $6/hour. After forming his own company, his big break came when he put on a roof for a client who published the community home-owners association newsletter. Delighted with the job, she featured him, and DryHome took off. Thirty years later, the business has been featured as the national Roofing Contractor of the Year from thousands in his business. Nineteen years ago, Steve responded to the need of his son’s Cub Scout troop to install a new roof. Every year since, DryHome has donated a free roof, materials included, to a homeowner or non-profit in need. Such jobs typically run anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000, but for Steve, it’s not about the size of the project but the size of the hearts of his recipients and those who nominate them. He relies on the credibility of the nominators and a simple test for whether the recipient is genuinely needy. Beyond Steve Gotschi with Barbara Greene and her new roof

that, “it’s really just about having a compelling story,” he admitted. And there have been some great ones.

Bernie Cline and his New Roof

The Elusive Owner (R) at Last Year's Finish Lyme Charity Race

Mia Fleming Outside Her Home in Leesburg

+ Burnette “Bernie” Cline (at right) was an 85-year-old and resident of Alexandria, Virginia since 1956. He was nominated by RPJ Housing, which repairs houses for needy residents. “They don’t do roofs,” Steve said, “so we stepped in.” + Last year’s recipient (left) was Mia Fleming of Leesburg, a legally blind resident who gives voice and piano lessons at Ida Lee Park. Blessed with “an angelic soprano voice,” she’s sung in many benefit concerts and local church performances and gives lectures on classical music and opera. + Barbara Green (facing page) drove a Loudoun County Public School bus for 35 years. Her husband had recently died after a five-year battle with lung cancer and his funeral expenses exhausted the savings she had put aside to fix her leaky roof. Then, a hip replacement surgery landed her in a wheelchair. “She has clearly given a lot to those around her... we were excited to make her holiday special with a new roof and hope it eases her burden,” Steve said. Nominations are accepted in November, and roofs typically are installed in December. Despite the fact that COVID quarantines have put a damper on contracts this year, Steve has no plans to defer his donation – it’s actually his “favorite time in the whole year.” Well – that, and the annual “Finish Lyme” race that he has organized for the past decade. That charity race, which over nine years has raised more than $450,000 to combat the disease, was to have celebrated its 10th annual running this May, but will have to wait until next year. It’s important to cite Steve’s involvement because, well, it’s one of the very few times you’ll ever catch him on camera. If you watch these folks here, I mean, everyone is enjoying it, you’ve probably noticed.” It’s worth noting that Peter was motivated as long ago as last fall by an article he saw about “Little Food Pantries, neighborhood repositories of food donations akin to the “Little Free Libraries” which make books available on stands in neighborhoods. “I thought, ‘Gee. That’s a cool idea.” He first approached local government authorities who suggested the corner of the police department on Plaza Street would be a good place for such a non-perishable food delivery system, but the idea became mired in red tape. One citizen who did seize on the idea was Richard Fuller, the minister at Crossroads Baptist Church on Edwards Ferry Road. Peter built the box on his farm in Hamilton and installed it on church property in early January. He says, “We’d stock it with non-perishables every day or every other day and then, here comes the pandemic.” The crisis made the effort seem paltry – “All of a sudden there was no school lunch, no back-pack food deliveries,” so he started calling around. You’ve seen this before: every outpouring of generosity from our community during the COVID crisis seems to have started with one person seeing a need and picking 30

up the phone (or taking to Facebook or Facebook messenger.) Peter, as a longstanding business owner may have more friends than most, but – as also happens – when he began looking for a venue from which to distribute food in town, what came to mind was a bank building he himself owned on E Market Street. First he thought they’d put the food in the parking lot, but the team needed room not just to accept drop-offs of lunches prepared in a licensed, commercial kitchen,

but also to assemble it in lunch bundles that could be quickly and easily distributed to families in waiting cars or bicycles. The obvious answer? Knock a hole in the wall of the drive-through and install a conveyor belt! From that point on, every single need he’s identified, someone has come through to fill it. One friend, Ken Courter, a retired publisher and founder of Ashburn Cares, observed, “It’s a miracle. It’s one great idea that’s compounded into such a loving expression of kindness.” To contact Peter about joining the Ampersand Pantry Project, email him at peterb@burnettwilliams.com or call 703777-1650, facebook.com/Ampersandpantryproject/.

Alternatively, to allow parents to successfully concentrate on work, creating separate “kid zones” is a great strategy. A small kid-centric lounge space, customized by kids themselves with cushions, a desk and lighting, allows parents some focused time in otherwise active areas of the home. Other considerations for kid-friendly play areas include either finishing a previously unfinished basement or encouraging them to play outside. Regardless of whether we need to shelter-in-place after this summer, the trend towards working from home has completely taken hold and will undoubtedly feature in a more flexible work environment. A more substantial, home-office solution gaining traction with a more flexible work force is the detached, backyard studio/workspace. This functions more like a typical office except conveniently located steps away from your back door. So long as you and your family members are willing to be flexible and accommodating, there is no end to the solutions along this continuum between merging and separating home and work. Continually exploring and “trying out” new solutions and honing practices that work can bring everyone productivity, sanity, and balance. Backyard studio exterior 42
