GOOD TIMES

A quiet Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills during social distancing. As our community was going into an imposed hibernation, the coming of spring did not disappoint, with its proliferating wildlife and blooming flowers. We found animals and humans cruising the nearly empty trails and hillsides, keeping 6 feet or more of social distance, of course. And speaking of distance, take a look at those open roads!

Special moments during the COVID-19 Crisis and Social Distancing Our thoughts go out to the individuals and businesses adversely affected by the COVID-19 closures and restrictions. But despite the state and county-wide mandates on social distancing that began mid-March, creative individuals found ways to pass the time by getting outdoors, grooming pets, and supporting our local eateries.

MIER SKIN CLINIC IN YORBA LINDA. I am a ‘solopreneur,’ so when you book an appointment, you get me. My practice is focused on solving skin problems and concerns for the woman who has been everywhere and tried everything. This woman “knows I cannot help her – but just in case.” I look forward to the challenge, the mystery, the possibility that I can help her feel better about herself. That is the best skin to come through my door. She will walk out relaxed and on her way to fresh, healthy, and vibrant skin with her custom home-care regimen to carry on and maintain.

FROM EARLY BEGINNINGS AT DISNEYLAND TO A WARMHEARTED FAMILY BUSINESS OF OVER 50 YEARS.

Yorba Linda Lifestyle | May 2020

SALLY ANN HAYNES WAS A SERVER AT THE LANDMARK BLUE BAYOU RESTAURANT AT DISNEYLAND IN 1963 WHEN A FRIEND ANNOUNCED SHE WAS GETTING MARRIED AND NEEDED FOOD PREPARATION FOR THE WEDDING GUESTS. Helping a friend in need seemed the natural thing to do, and her experience in some of the most exclusive fine dining restaurants at Disneyland, including the star-studded Club 33, had properly prepared her for such an occasion. Experience and opportunity were the beginning of Sally Ann Catering. Although cooking for a lot of people was not a problem, as she was accustomed to preparing meals for her own large family, it wasn’t long before word got around that Sally was soon catering more weddings. Customer referrals is what launched her business in 1969, and referrals are still the number one source of marketing for Sally Ann Catering today. With her home kitchen full and her catering business continuing to grow, the responsibilities of working at Disneyland and raising a family were taking their toll, eventually tipping in favor of running her own catering kitchen in which the family could take some part. Sally Ann left Disneyland to open her first catering kitchen in an Anaheim cheese shop in 1969, and moved to their current location in Placentia in 1981. Over the past 50 years, all of Sally Ann’s seven daughters worked in the family catering business at one time or another, each of them contributing to the development of the rich flavor and character of the family business. Over the years, the Haynes’ family mission of creating delicious, heart-warming food met traditional Disney flair, eventually adding matching costumes for the waitstaff, ranging from the formal attire of French Maids and black-tie tuxedos, to casual Hawaiian or safari,

Sally Ann Hayes Sally Ann Hayes began her catering career in 1963, while she was working as a waitress at The Blue Bayou and Club 33, an exclusive Disneyland restaurant. Sally Ann Catering was born when her excellent reputation for presentation and hospitality steadily increased the demand for her catering services.

Yorba Linda Lifestyle | May 2020

DR. BETH HANE Y FOUNDER LUXE AESTHETICS

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR BUSINESS? A nurse practitioner I worked with was moving, and she asked me to see her aesthetic patients in Beverly Hills, so I went through training and began my career in aesthetics in 2002. I later opened our office in Yorba Linda where people could receive high quality, safe, and effective aesthetic treatments by experienced professionals. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? There is great satisfaction in helping men and women feel more confident in their daily lives, and caring for people to help them look and feel their best. HOW DO YOU TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF? Serving as mayor of Yorba Linda, owning a business, and working in primary care at UCI take up a lot of time, but I prioritize time to re-charge and have fun. My husband and I enjoy Anaheim Ducks games, skiing, hiking, and running events such as the Yorba Days 5K. WHAT IS THE BEST MEMORY OF SPENDING TIME WITH YOUR MOTHER? My 86-year-old mother recently discovered SnapChat at my uncle’s 90th birthday party, and we were laughing so hard at our Snaps that tears rolled down our cheeks! She was a cat, a baby, a biker, and many other characters...that was a great memory!

Tanya and Robbie Spencer are the face of flight for Skydive West Coast, but they couldn’t do it without two other essential team members every skydiving outfit must have. Skydive West Coast’s power trio of safety and reliability includes pilot Priscilla Marapodi, and plane mechanic Samantha Guerrero. As an all-female team in a male-dominated sport, Tanya, Priscilla, and Samantha have faced certain challenges. “Being a young and female aviator in a male dominated environment is not easy,” Priscilla explained. “I always get looks from people from both genders doubting my ability as a pilot, but I use every negativity and obstacle as fuel to continue striving for success.” Samantha recognizes the potential discrimination and sexism that women can feel in her field. Some individuals might regard females in the skydiving industry “as fragile-minded, not knowing as much as a guy would, or not being physically strong enough for certain jobs.” Samantha has asserted her personal power in academic and professional settings as a mechanic to even well-intentioned colleagues, some who even tried to complete work on her behalf, something she knew would detract from her learning experiences. Working as a female in this industry isn’t always plagued with gender-fueled discomfort for the women of Skydive West Coast. “Some people think this is a ‘mans’ sport and women don't have the strength for tandem [jumps],” Tanya said. “But we have the respect from our peers,” she says, speaking the truth for all three of them. “Experienced skydivers know this sport isn't all about brute strength. It is the only sport where men and women can and do compete equally in competitions, nationally and internationally.” The thrill of skydiving has helped these women develop self-confidence, self-esteem, and confidence that is utterly contagious for their guests and clients. Tanya says, “I have the power to do anything I believe I can do, and after that first leap, my clients know that is true.” Tanya Spencer and her four-legged baby, Oliver Blue, an English Border Collie.

Skydive West Coast is located in the San Gorgonio Pass, between Big Bear and San Jacinto. To schedule your tandem skydive, call Skydive West Coast at (951)-567-1848, or by email at info@skydivewestcoast.com. CityLifestyle.com/YorbaLinda

love on the physical, mental, and emotional levels. At Full Circle Yoga & Healing Arts, now celebrating its 10th year in Yorba Linda, Kristen makes the path of yoga, meditation, and energy healing accessible to everyone. Kristen began working in healing 25 years ago as a massage therapist specializing in pain management. Having no tools at the time to handle her own pain and anxiety, she found relief in yoga and reiki, which allowed her to heal her body and overcome emotional pain. Through The Healer’s Journey she has made yoga a way of life by becoming a Reiki Master, healer, registered yoga teacher, and authoring a book, The Gift of Awakening, available on Amazon and Audible. A notable lack of holistic health services in north Orange County led Kristen and husband, Jeff, to open Full Circle Yoga & Healing Arts as a healing and practice center inspired by her initial experiences with Yoga. They provide a safe space where all can come “Full Circle” on their own spiritual path and receive guidance for their mind, body, and spirit. Full Circle Yoga & Healing Arts is not a
