A SPOTLIGHT ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT
THIS YEAR MARKS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RATIFICATION OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT, WHICH NATIONALLY GAVE WOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE. If you wished to identify a single woman in Knoxville who embodied the fight for suffrage and many other causes, Lizzie Crozier French would be the most obvious candidate. She’s immortalized in bronze on Market Square striding confidently along with two other activists representing other parts of the state. As well as our leading leader of suffrage, Lizzie Crozier French was an acclaimed educator who helped open places of learning like the University of Tennessee to women students, and who acted broadly as a social reform activist. French was born in Knoxville in 1851. Her father, John H. Crozier (1812-1889), was an attorney and a former, two-term congressman, and her grandfather, Captain John Crozier (1769-1838) served as Knoxville’s second postmaster for more than thirty years. When young Lizzie was two, the family moved into a new home on the corner of Gay and West Clinch where the Hyatt Place (the old Farragut Hotel) stands today. The home was notable for its remarkable library, in which Lizzie and her two sisters found inspiration. That library was also appreciated by Gen. Ambrose Burnside chose to commandeer the Crozier house for a time in 1863 when the Union Army took control of the city. By then, Crozier, a Confederate supporter and moved his family temporarily out of town. The Crozier name though still has some local currency – the recently constructed Crozier building in the Old City is indirectly named for the Crozier family. Her parents sent Lizzie away to school, first to a convent in Georgetown in the District of Columbia, and later to an Episcopalian school in Middle Tennessee. In 1872 she starred as the leading part of Mrs. Hardcastle in a local play, She Stoops to Conquer, at the former Young Men’s Dancing Club on Main Street, alongside future author Frances Hodgson Burnett (The Secret Garden, Little Lord Fauntleroy), who lived in Knoxville just after the Civil War during the mid-1860s and 1870s. French remained friends with the author for years.

In the 1890s, Lizzie Crozier’s community work began to intensify. She helped found the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union and the Mount Rest Home on McCalla Avenue for elderly women. She also established the position of matron in the Knoxville Police Department, ensuring that women and children were treated differently from male criminals. French herself served as temporary matron before Hattie Cora Stearns “Mother” Thompson (the mother of Knoxville’s most famous photographer, Jim Thompson) was hired. Despite her community-minded efforts, Lizzie Crozier French still found time for travel and cultural pursuits. In 1884, she visited New York City attending a literal and political event at one of the nation’s first professional women’s clubs. Back in Knoxville, she helped form Ossoli Circle, a progressive intellectual women’s club that held its early meetings at the Female Institute. The durable organization, which claims to be the oldest women’s club in the south, is still active today and was named for the noted American journalist and social activist, Margaret Fuller Ossili (1810-1850.) French took the train north to experience the spectacle of the 1893 Columbia Exposition in Chicago, and such trips may have increased her confidence in speaking about topics such as “The Art of the Louvre” and “The Culture of Luxembourg” at the Nicholson Art League in Knoxville. She was also a charter member of the “Art Museum” and the Lyceum, two of Knoxville’s early art-based institutions of the same era. Sadly, her portrait by professional artist Lloyd Branson no longer exists – it was lost when the Women’s Building on Main Street went up in flames in 1906. That painting was reportedly one of the most treasured pieces of art in the city.

HALEE SPRINKLE CZECH YOURSELF MARKETING Having spent years working in corporate marketing, Halee Sprinkle saw a need in the market for services aimed at small businesses and nonprofits. She stepped out of her corporate job to found Czech Yourself Marketing in October 2017. Since that time, she has used her creativity and diversity of experience to help small businesses grow and achieve their goals. “As a small business owner myself, I know how exciting every milestone is,” Halee says, “so being a part of that for someone else makes me beam.” Tired of working from her kitchen counter or local cafes, Girl Boss Offices came at the right time for Czech Yourself Marketing. “Having that home base helps with my work efficiency,” says Halee, “but it also validates my business when I can say ‘come to my office’ rather than trying to save tables at a coffee shop,” she adds. MEGAN COOK COOK CREATIVE CONSULTING Before she had even launched her business, Megan Cook knew she needed Girl Boss Offices to make her dream of entrepreneurship a reality. The nonprofit consultant knew having a community around her would push her to succeed and grow her company. Officially launching her business on the same day that Girl Boss Offices opened their doors in November 2019, Cook Creative Consulting helps nonprofit organizations with grant writing, communications, marketing, and fundraising. “The common thread is storytelling,” Megan explains. Whether in a grant application, visually in a brochure, or curating content for an organization’s website, Cook Creative Consulting tells the stories of nonprofits and the work they do. Megan’s compelling narrative style helps her clients garner support, recruit volunteers, and build capacity for them to expand their work and meet the needs of their communities. Megan loves running her business from Girl Boss Offices because the community of women helps broaden her circle of influence. “Everyone is open with their network, helping build connections, and social capital,” she says. “That community piece is tremendous for growing a business in the early stages.” 24

KATHRYN FRADY MARBLE CITY OPERA Finding her place in a new business niche is familiar territory for Kathryn Frady, founder of Marble City Opera. The nonprofit organization brings opera to new audiences using innovative spaces, modern English-language productions, and convenient time frames to make the theatrical experience more intimate and digestible for both newcomers and longtime fans of the art form. When Kathryn heard about the new kind of shared office space that is Girl Boss Offices, she knew she would fit right in. Although managing her organization from home had been working since she launched in 2013, having an office leads to increased productivity, more effective collaboration with other organizations and entrepreneurs, and a sense of legitimacy for Marble City Opera. Even the simple benefit of an address and phone number has made a difference for Kathryn. Having previously used her out-of-state cell phone for ticketing and information, now having a phone number with a Knoxville area code makes the organization feel more permanent and trustworthy for audience members and potential donors alike. “When you feel more legitimate as a person and a business, other people see that too,” Kathryn says. “It almost changes the way you carry yourself, and people respond to that.”

ers as an educational coach, or working with
Knoxville’s Project GRAD to propel high schoolers to college and career readiness, Angie’s passion is seeing people thrive physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Following a life-changing experience with her family, she started the Hozho Project, named for a Navajo word that encompasses the idea of “embracing the beauty around you and living with intention.” “Everything I do is about helping people live in that state of hozho,” Angie says. The purpose of Woven was born out of that idea, endeavoring to bring women together on their unique journeys to learn and grow in community. Gatherings connect women, provide an unconditional support system, and value continual learning from one another and within themselves. “I feel we are all teaching one another,” Angie says. Unlike other restorative retreats that tend to focus on a particular aspect or method of healing or development, Angie designs each Woven experience to provide various opportunities for growth and renewal physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. She is careful to carve out space for intentional downtime to quiet the mind, and a special room for creative expression gives participants the opportunity to process their experience through art, journaling, and more. “Woven is the perfect rest stop on your life journey,” says retreat participant Ginger Markley. “Pull aside, recoup, and get what you need so you can get to your destination safely.” Woven gatherings are cultivated to develop self-love and acceptance as well as continual learning and accepting others. Angie describes the community as “opening outward,” though times of solitude are still honored. “It’s an open circle,” she explains. As the Woven community grows, Angie is working to provide more regular gatherings for women to connect and recharge between retreats. Each event cultivates elements to calm, rejuvenate, and inspire women to become their best selves. These supplemental gatherings are free or Dutch treat, open for anyone to join or bring a friend. That doesn’t mean they are boisterous social gatherings, however. “I am a self-proclaimed extrovert,” Angie says, “but I’m very intentional about designing spaces that still honor those who are not. We give everyone space and permission to make the experience her own.” The next Woven Retreat is scheduled for September 4-6, 2020 at the enchanting Bend of Ivy Lodge in Asheville, NC. Featuring guest co-host Grace Kendrick -- Ayurvedic healthy living expert and founder of Blissful Living Wellness -- and catered by Chelsea Lockhart of With Grace and Love Cooking, guests can find more information by visiting WovenRetreats.com. PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since
they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-

LOCAL’S CHOICE GRAB GREAT FOOD TO GO
ARTICLE THAT KNOXVILLE GIRL
T H R E E F A V O R I T E S F O R M AY IT’S BEEN A SHAKY COUPLE OF MONTHS, BUT WE CAN STILL SUPPORT LOCAL RESTAURANTS SAFELY. There are countless Knoxville businesses that I love and cherish, but these three are a few of my favorites. Family Meal Knoxville offers quality chef-prepared food, invoiced online, and delivered directly to your doorstep with the utmost safety and care. You can’t beat that kind of service. The extensive menu changes seasonally, so peruse the list online and try something new. FamilyMealKnox.com Hard Knox Pizza is a locally-owned, Knoxville-based artisan pizza restaurant that has a fresh spin on every pie. They have three 12” kits ready for you with their famous crust, par-baked and ready to freeze or add toppings. You can get a growler to-go or a family meal pack. Call to order: Bearden (865) 602-2114 or Hardin Valley (865) 896-3760. HardKnoxPizza.com Petro’s Chili & Chips doesn’t need an introduction, but if you haven’t tried the Petro’s Family Packs, give it a go! They are the perfect to-go option for feeding 5-7 hungry people. (Tip: Check with your closest Petro’s to see what deals they’re running for to-go orders. I’m a fan of their Hint-of-Orange Tea.) Order via drive-thrus, BiteSquad, or call-ahead. Petros.com If ordering to-go isn’t an option right now, you can always buy a gift card to use later or leave that business a 5-star review on Google or Yelp. Share small businesses on social media or recommend them to a friend! Follow @ThatKnoxvilleGirl on Instagram and Facebook.
