Each and every morning we have decisions to make. To get out of bed. To make breakfast, or maybe to awaken others to get on with the start of the day. But there are some among us who are struggling with the everyday routine. Many are women who find themselves in abusive relationships or perhaps desiring a pivotal change in their lives. For them, there may come a day when that everyday routine is suddenly not enough or perhaps, no longer tolerable. There is an old proverb about the risk in remaining in a situation being greater than the risk to change. For those cases, life can become so difficult that the only way left to survive is taking that first and sometimes unsteady step towards change. And fortunately for these Treasure Valley women, Boise’s local chapter of Dress for Success has indeed become that first and critical step towards real and lasting change. Dress for Success Director Rachel Flichel knows all too well about how powerful that catalyst for change can be in a woman’s life. Call it kismet, serendipity or just plain opportunity, twelve years ago Flichel attended one of the Dress for Success’s auction events that involved her professional hockey player husband, an event that ended up forever changing her life.

“At that time, I didn’t really have much of a passion for something other than taking care of my family and being a hockey wife. But while I was at this local celebrity tea party auction, I couldn’t help but feel how incredible this program was. I listened to a story about a woman whose life had been transformed by Dress for Success and I knew from being from the cosmetics industry the importance of looking and feeling your best and the confidence that comes with that.” Drawing upon her years as a hockey wife, mom, and former makeup artist for Chanel, Filcher carved out her unique talents to channel her focus on helping others. “I knew that if this was available to somebody who has been struggling that it could be so life changing.” Our Annual Back & White Gala takes place at the Boise Centre on Friday, September 18th, 2020 Photo: Tana Photography

After joining the board for Dress for Success and volunteering, Flichel knew she was smitten and that she had also found her calling. “It was the first time I felt like I had a passion for something.”

18

Boise Lifestyle | September 2020

Fast forward twelve years, seven of which she has now served as director, Flichel runs the daily operations and of course, their main fundraiser. Though the celebrity tea party auction had been her initial introduction into the Dress for Success main fundraiser, Flichel realized that many of the attendees for the luncheon would have to leave halfway through the event, not surprisingly, to return to work. Says Flichel, “The auction was geared towards the working woman and so I knew if I wanted to include these women, I had to change things up and so I moved it to an evening event, The Black and White Gala. Right away we went from $35,000 from our tea party to last year raising $210,000. This was a huge opportunity in our growth and also how we can really help women in our community and be able to fund more things.” Set for September 18th, 2020, Flichel has had to adjust the scheduling of the event to meet the unique and ever-changing challenges of Covid-19. Originally slated for April 4th, Covid has forced Flichel to push things forward and adjust her timeframe to fit with these very

unprecedented times. “This is our only fundraiser, our bread and butter for our organization.” Though the pandemic has created challenges, it hasn’t thwarted Flichel’s vision for where she hopes to see Dress for Success in the future.

Her wish list for Dress for Success? Says Flichel, “We would love to be in a building all of our own. Maybe down-

Despite recent challenges, Flichel is committed to reaching these goals as well as remaining resolute in their mission for helping women. Says Flichel, “A lot of us can see ourselves in these women. We know because of different circumstances

Fall is the most romantic time of year. Dropping temperatures coinciding with rich tones from the earth entice us to “cozy up.” In a Fall wardrobe, layers facilitate opportunities to have both versatility in outfits, and the ability to warm up or cool down when needed. The rule for style this Fall: STOP following the rules. Feel free to pair a 70s vintage fringe jacket with a modern wet look pant, or wear shoes that don’t color match an outfit. The confidence that’s carried by an individual when wearing something loved is what “pulls it off.” Dillard’s is my go-to department store for business attire/accessories when I am touring the Valley with my real estate clients. I pop in over at Serendipity Boutique Consignment Clothing for fun vintage looks. I acquire quality belts and fun Western boots from D&B Supply. Rooney Mae Couture designs striking event gowns and resort wear. If I can’t find what I am envisioning, I commission a local designer to make it. I make my own jewelry to compliment an outfit on occassion.

RENOVATE & REFINE

FINDING SERENITY THROUGH DESIGN

C R E AT I N G A H AV E N ARTICLE JULIE BONNER PHOTOGRAPHY PEIGHTON RUSSELL

TRYING TO FIND A LITTLE PEACE HAS BECOME QUITE THE CHALLENGE IN TODAY’S MODERN WORLD. Our day-to-day lives can be exhausting with our busy schedules. You find yourself in a whirlwind of perpetual chaos with nowhere to land. What is the answer? Well, my answer is creating a place you can always retreat to: your safe haven, your place of rest and security. What do I call this place? Simply, I call it “Home”.

30

Boise Lifestyle | September 2020

Home is a very personal environment and yet it’s also an outward expression of who you are. Working with design clients for well over 20 years has really taught me that Home is not just pieces of furniture and four walls but more about the people who live there. Life makes a home and good interior design can help mold the life you want to live. My ultimate joy is creating a relationship with a client to really help them create an environment they love to come home to. A place that brings a smile to their face when they walk in the door. A place they can’t help but invite their friends over to share. Here are some current trends that I think might help you in creating your own serene Haven. The first thing we need to cover is color. Color plays such a role in mood manipulation. Our minds and body can have very strong reactions to some colors right away while some reactions you might not even notice until you really think about it. Our subconscious is always working. Taking these things into consideration is a big step in creating a restful environment. Current interior design trends have really taken cues from what people are experiencing during these unprecedented times. As much time as we are spending at home, combined with our busy family lives, we are craving simplicity and comfort. Your Home is your Haven. Make it a reflection of what you want for your life. Editors Note: Julie Bonner has worked as an independent designer and for the past 15 years with Ethan Allen Home Interiors. Watch for her on CityLifestyle.com where she will feature more design tips on her Ambassador Page.

RESOURCES FOR CURRENT INFORMATION AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE UNIQUE FOR SCHOOLS ACROSS THE NATION DUE TO COVID-19. On July 9, the Governor’s Office, State Board of Education and State Department of Education released the Idaho Back to School Framework. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and Idaho’s seven local public health districts helped create and contribute to the Idaho Back to School Framework. 36

BOISE SCHOOL DISTRICT Dan Hollar, spokesperson for the Boise School District, said each school in the district has developed a building implementation plan that is in alignment with the district. Boise School District Schools sent their implementation plan to the community on July 6 and had planned to edit and adjust as needed. Hollar said the district will be prepared to support, care for, and most importantly, teach their students whether students are unable to attend their traditional on-campus school or children begin to experience “COVID-19 closures” similar to what happened in the Spring. “Every student deserves access to a great education, delivered by a highly-qualified Boise School District teacher, regardless of whether the teaching and learning occur in a traditional classroom or online,” Hollar said. “To that end, we are building an online program to be launched this Fall that not only meets our standards but our parents’ and students’ expectations, as well.” Hollar highlighted that masks will be expected when students are unable to social distance and will be provided if requested. Handwashing stations will be available throughout schools in the district and hand sanitizer will be available for all staff, families and students. Meetings with parents and the community will be virtual when possible and visitors will be required to make an appointment to enter school buildings, except under emergency circumstances. With a new expectation in safety and education, the Boise School District will stand by their core beliefs and interests. “Our neighborhood public schools play a critical role in the vibrancy, unity and well-being of our community,” Hollar said. “While pivoting to respond to an unpredictable future, we must remain firmly grounded in our core beliefs and interests.” BISHOP KELLY HIGH SCHOOL Idaho’s only Catholic High School, Bishop Kelly, started their 2020-21 school year on August 1. The Catholic school’s Board of Governance approved their 202021 Instructional Plan on June 22 after being shared at the Virtual Town Hall meeting on June 17. The online meeting was hosted by the President of Bishop Kelly High School, Rich Raimondi, and Principal Mike Caldwell. The Plan implements four main goals that the school took from 602 parent surveys: 1. Make the learning experience exceptional for all Bishop Kelly students, faculty and staff. 2. Build a plan that provides flexibility, adaptability and options for their students, faculty/staff and school. 3. Keep Bishop Kelly students, faculty/staff and community safe and healthy. 4. Engage their parents and community as partners to the overall learning experience of Bishop Kelly students. Bishop Kelly is planning to have all students and staff on campus daily by establishing appropriate and safe social distancing protocols in classrooms, hallways and gathering spaces. They will rearrange areas on campus to maximize physical space. CONTINUED >

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED)

During the parent virtual town hall meeting, 75% of parents asked the school to provide hand washing stations and sanitizing throughout the school. Thirtynine percent of parents voted that the school did not need any additional safety measures as long as they followed the already placed state and federal guidelines. Many parents urged that face-to-face learning was the best option for their children. “The highest number of comments were basically ‘you need to open up,” Raimondi, said during the virtual meeting. WEST ADA SCHOOL DISTRICT The West Ada School District also used parent surveys to provide important input for the planning of the upcoming school year. The district claimed the most common theme and feedback from the parents was that their children need to continue to learn in school at high levels for the 2020-21 school year. The district has a pandemic plan that has been approved by Central District Health. West Ada will be opening on August 27 and giving their students the option to attend school as normal with extra safety measures in place or attend online classes through their Virtual School House. Each student will go through an assessment to identify learning gaps that may need to be addressed. West Ada School District purchased technology ensuring every student will be one-to-one with a device. K-2 students will be issued a tablet or laptop while students 3-12 will be issued laptops. The district will be addressing concerns regarding lack of internet access and will be coordinating with internet providers for a lower-cost connection. After acknowledging that things can change very quickly, West Ada has created three scenarios to always be prepared. “Green,” being normal school operations, includes no community transmission and is the first scenario. Schools will run as normal with extra safety precautions and training on how to be prepared for the district’s “Yellow” and “Red” plans. “Yellow,” is an alternate day schedule, including minimal to moderate community transmission. This plan was created to avoid complete school closure and will have half of the students attending classes every other day. The “Yellow” scenario will be determined by guidance from Central District Health and other Idaho governmental authorities. The last plan is the “Red” scenario, meaning West Ada is experiencing substantial community transmission, will move to a completely online system where school buildings will be closed.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FINANCIAL INDUSTRY? I grew up working on the farm and knew I didn’t want to do that forever. In college, I studied computers and began working as the Data Processing Manager at ICCU in January 1984. I continued to grow in various positions throughout my career at Idaho Central and was promoted to CEO in October 2007. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR WORK? I am proud of the Green Team and the tremendous work we do on behalf of our members and our communities. We are important to their financial security. We are a safe place – a place of refuge. We are predictable even when everything seems to be unpredictable. WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH FINANCING FOR BUSINESSES, HOMEOWNERS, AND INVESTORS? Many people have experienced hardships over the past several months. We have been there for our members with skipped loan payments, relief loan options, the PPP program and have helped in many other ways on a case-by-case basis. We are optimistic that our economy and affected members will be able to recover as we find ways to live with this virus present in our world. It is very rewarding to be able to help our members during this time. The future is unpredictable, but loan rates are strong. People are still buying cars and homes. Many of our members who have not had a history of saving, are able to put money in their savings accounts. We remain flexible to adapt in this changing, unprecedented environment. HOW ARE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS MEETING THE CURRENT NEEDS OF RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES? COVID-19 has forced us to change our internal processes, but hasn’t stopped us from providing the services our members need. We have shifted to focusing

what is your advice to younger generations on how to handle t heir f i n an ce s? TIP 1 Establish a budget - When you don’t track your finances, you have no idea where your money is going and can easily spend more than you earn. TIP 2 Save automatically - Setting up automatic savings – it puts your extra cash out of sight and out of mind.

more on our electronic services and many members appreciate being able to transact without stepping foot in a physical branch location. We have shifted job responsibilities of some team members to cover the increases in certain areas of business that have increased as a result of member service modifications.

TIP 3 Start investing - The earlier you start investing, the more time your money has to grow and the more potential you’ll have to earn. TIP 4 Review your expenditures - At least once a year, review what you’re spending and see where you can cut costs or adjust.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST SKILLS THAT YOU BRING TO YOUR JOB? The skills that I bring to the job are the ability to make tough decisions and then act on them, a never-give-up attitude, honesty, integrity, and a keen eye for detail.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS FOR YOU, PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY? Success to me is a big picture that includes the ability to simultaneously excel at one’s chosen profession, maintain and nurture a loving home and family life, while financially supporting worthwhile charitable causes.

OUTSIDE OF WORK/PROFESSION, DO YOU HAVE SKILLS OR TALENTS THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT? I have a green thumb in the flower garden, sing and play guitar in a musical duo with my wife, and enjoy snow skiing, scuba diving and bicycling.
