remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities giving back locally.

more significance. Through programs that encourage safe and inclusive play, the nonprofit Playworks helps get kids active, build social skills and develop relationships with peers. The results are literally life-changing. Simply put, they unleash the underestimated power of play. “The act of play is helping kids to communicate and show respect and leadership for each other,” Kerryann says. “Something that seems as simple as play can do all of that for a child and I see it every day in our program.” Playworks accomplishes this by training faculty and staff at elementary schools and youth organizations in its techniques and games. It also provides on-site adult coaches, if requested. Several Chandler

The options are endless and keep everyone engaged. The program’s flexibility means kids can put their own spin on tradition, which is empowering. For example, they use the

just bouncing a ball and instead using mental capacity and memory. Kids learn to resolve competitive ties or disputes with a single round of Rock Paper Scissors. The “Good job, nice try buddy” that Playworks encourages on the playground has gone beyond. Kerryann has heard kids say this to each other in nonplay situations and witnessed Rock Paper Scissors resolutions. “I was like, it really works!” she says. “Campuses are transformed.” The results have been powerful. Kids that perennially wound up in the principal’s office reversed that pattern. Some became junior coaches who embraced leadership roles even when not on the playground. There’s one young lady who used to spend most of her non-school hours at home with no social network of friends. She became a Playworks junior coach and one of the program’s best success stories with her work with younger children. Now, she teaches neighborhood kids the games she’s learned and built many friendships that she never had before. This story especially touches Kerryann’s heart. The girl’s mother personally thanked her. “This allows a child to elevate their voice and feel confident. Kids have the opportunity to lead other kids so they can help their peers on the playground,” Kerryann says. “This is why we are passionate about what play can do.” For more information, visit Playworks.org/Arizona. 18

Nish Shah, DMD, MD, FACS AZ ORAL FACIAL AND IMPLANT SURGERY
Nish Shah, DMD, MD, FACS, is an oral surgeon who’s been serving in the Chandler area for more than 16 years. He and his wife have three grown children and are active in their church. When he’s not busy changing lives, he enjoys playing doubles tennis. “I came out to visit a friend from dental school when I was approaching the end of my residency, with my family, and we loved it out here. It was the middle of August!” says Nish. In 2017 he was inducted into the American College of Surgeons, an award recognizing those who are the best in their surgical specialty. Only a handful of oral and maxillofacial surgeons have been honored with this title in Arizona. “I love surgery and enjoy helping people. It is rewarding being able to help others who have challenging problems,” he says. His inspiration for all he does is a higher power. His relationship with God has made the biggest impact on his life. “It is my most important motivation for doing better every day and helping people in the office, as well as the community,” says Nish. “I try to find humor in almost every situation, because I think that finding enjoyment in life keeps you most content.” He and his team participate annually in local charity events like Arizona Mission of Mercy (AZMOM) and Free Dental Days, providing dental services to those in need. He also went abroad on a mission trip to a remote part of India, sponsored by Compass Christian Church, to provide cleft lip and palate surgery to people who didn’t have access to such services. “You can’t help everyone, but you can always show people compassion and care and do your best,” says Nish. 26

INSPIRED TO GREATNESS
(CON TI N U ED)
Dr. Shadow Asgari SONORAN SMILE ORTHODONTICS
Dr. Shadow Asgari loves spending time with her family and friends. Traveling, running and yoga are at the top of her fun list. But, creating beautiful smiles for people fills her cup to the brim. Shadow was born, raised and received her education in Houston, Texas. She first came to Arizona during her residency. “I fell in love with the vast desert and skies, and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I knew then this is where I’d come after graduation to begin my career,” she says. “After completing my education in 2002, I moved to Chandler to begin my practice in orthodontics, and I’ve been here since.” Shadow’s father immigrated to the United States to receive a good education and always encouraged his daughters to study, work hard and go into healthcare. He wanted them to have secure careers. “Some call this the immigrant mentality and many children of immigrants can relate. My other sisters also went into dentistry and medicine,” says Shadow. “I’m glad I chose this field because it has been rewarding to make such a big difference in people’s lives. What’s better than helping create beautiful smiles?” Her inspiration is the City of Chandler, its community and the way people come together to help each other. The community is what inspires her to be and do better, to be a leader and an example for others. It’s also what moved Shadow and her partner, Dr. Samantha Vu, to give back by treating many teachers at no charge or reduced fees. “We love teachers and I have personally been so touched by their sacrifices and the difference they’ve made in my kids’ lives,” she says. “I hope to expand on this and be able to do more in the future for more of the selfless givers in our city.”
Cathleen Carter RE/MAX ALLIANCE GROUP
Cathleen Carter is a real estate professional who loves what she does for a living—helping people buy and sell homes. But for her it’s more than just the end goal, it’s the process from start to finish. She likes making new friends, working with people, and striving to keep transactions running smooth and easy. “One client said it quite well. He said, ‘It’s such an abrupt goodbye.’ We are in contact almost daily and when we close the transaction it instantly stops. That’s the hard part,” Cathleen says. She’s been a salesperson for years and understands the importance of being in charge of her business. This is perhaps why she is inspired by successful people in any industry. It challenges her to better herself. “I know there will always be someone in front of me and someone behind. I just try to keep myself in check and continue to strive to be my best,” she says. Cathleen admits it’s difficult for her to slow down, but she does enjoy fresh air, green grass and a good game of golf. “My Chandler connection is my heart. I love Chandler and truly can’t see myself living anywhere else,” she says. “I’m from South Bend, Indiana, moved to the Valley in 1989, and have been watching it grow up.” 28

Amy Barro BARRO’S PIZZA
Amy Barro is the corporate vice president for Barro’s Pizza and a half-time reading specialist at Ashland Ranch Elementary. Amy moved with her husband and two sons to Chandler in 1998 because they fell in love with the Ocotillo area, the school system, and the family-friendly atmosphere. Her sons are grown, but the couple still lives here with their two golden retrievers. Amy taught elementary school for years. During this time, they opened their first of three Barro’s Pizza locations in Chandler. “My husband Ken and I have been married for 28 years, so I have been blessed to watch Barro’s Pizza grow from just a few locations to soon-to-be 45. It’s extremely rewarding to work so closely with family members and to be such a big part of the community. Many people think we are a franchise, but all locations are family-owned, and in many of our restaurants you can find a family member working behind the counter,” says Amy. She’s inspired by people who’ve survived difficult, life-changing experiences such as the loss of a child or the diagnosis of a serious illness. She’s in awe of their courage to get up every day and live on. “When I think that life is hard or I’m having a bad day, I think of those going through difficult times and remind myself to have gratitude for everything in my life,” she says. Amy is a strong advocate for the needs of children and animals, and her passion lies in helping those who cannot help themselves. During the holidays she partners with Ocotillo Friends to organize an adopt-a-family event. On a business level, Barro’s Pizza holds the Doran Barro Hunger Fight on the first Tuesday in December each year. The event is special to the family and named for their matriarch, who lost her battle with cancer in 2014. All proceeds are donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank. “If each and every one of us took the time to give back to just one thing we are passionate about, we could make the world a much more positive place. It doesn’t have to be monetary—start out by spending an hour once a month helping a child learn to read. Find your passion and live it,” says Amy. Her favorite quote is from the children’s book Wonder by R.J. Palacio: “Greatness is not being strong, but using strength to carry the most hearts.” November 2019 | Chandler Lifestyle

IN HER STORIED CAREER IN THE VALLEY, DIANA TAURASI HAS WON THREE WNBA CHAMPIONSHIPS (2007, 2009, 2014), ONE WNBA MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD (2009), TWO WNBA FINALS MVP AWARDS (2009, 2014), FOUR OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS, (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016), FIVE SCORING TITLES (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), THE WNBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD (2004) AND THREE FIBA WORLD CUPS (2010, 2014, 2018). She is considered one of the greatest female basketball players of all time—nicknamed by Kobe Bryant as “the white mamba”—and the WNBA’s all-time scoring leader. But, for all of the work she has done on the court, the work she has done off of it is just as special. Since being drafted number one overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2004 WNBA Draft, Diana has invested many hours when not on the court volunteering and fundraising across Arizona. She is a past winner of the WNBA’s Community Assist Award, which is given to WNBA players who go the extra mile to make “assists” for those in need. Tireless in her volunteerism, she has worked with One Community, Save the Family and many others, especially helping women and children. Just last year, she partnered with a group of local nonprofits to host more than 50 single mothers and their families, who were given grocery store gift cards, flowers and breakfast, and spent the morning with Diana and her teammates. One organization for which she is especially involved is called KaBOOM!. KaBOOM! is dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America. Since its inception in 1996, the organization has built or improved over 17,000 play spaces and served more than 10 million children. Diana not only volunteers and fundraises for KaBOOM!; she has a portal on her own website where fans can buy autographed merchandise of hers, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the organization. Beyond that, she hosted her own fundraising events and donated her own funds to help build a KaBOOM! playground in Connecticut in the name of University of Photo by Barry Gossage/ NBAE via Getty Images

LEADER IN ASSISTS
(CON TI N U ED)
“I THINK WHAT THE FIESTA BOWL IS DOING THIS YEAR SAYS A LOT ABOUT WHAT THEY MEAN TO THE COMMUNITY, WHAT THEY MEAN TO THE COUNTRY AS FAR AS FORWARD THINKING AND GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.”
Another Valley organization that supports KaBOOM! is the Fiesta Bowl, also a nonprofit that is most known for hosting one of the nation’s top college football postseason matchups every year at State Farm Stadium. The Fiesta Bowl has built seven playgrounds across the state of Arizona with KaBOOM!, with another on the way this month in Fort Mohave. So it’s appropriate that Diana and the Fiesta Bowl came together last month when Diana was named as one of five Arizona female icons who will serve as Grand Marshals for the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade, presented by Cheez-It on Sat., Dec. 28. She will be joined by Amy Bockerstette, Julie Ertz, Jessica McDonald and Allysa Seely. “I’ve been on a lot of teams but that’s a pretty strong starting five right there,” Diana says. “It’s a time for women in sports to be recognized and carry this torch into the future. I think what the Fiesta Bowl is doing this year says a lot about what they mean to the community, what they mean to the country as far as forward thinking and going in the right direction.” Amy is the first Special Olympics athlete to receive a full college athletic scholarship and currently plays golf for Paradise Valley Community College. You may also remember her from the Waste Management Phoenix Open in January when she parred the famous 16th hole, alongside defending champion Gary Woodland. A native of Mesa, Julie was recently named to the 2019 FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 and earned 2017 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year. She won two World Cup titles and has been on the National Team since 2013. The Dobson High School graduate and her husband, Zach, a tight end for 2018 Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles, co-founded the Ertz Family Foundation to create opportunities for children in sports and education. Soccer star Jessica made her first World Cup appearance this year at 31 years old, and was the only mother on the Team USA at the 2019 World Cup. spine and connective tissue conditions in 2010. She was told she might never walk unaided again and then overcame it all and won gold at the 2016 Paralympic Games and became a three-time ITU Paratriathalon World Champion. With the Parade theme of Women in Sports honoring Diana and her fellow trailblazers’ contributions in their fields, the connection between Diana and the Fiesta Bowl is something special given their like-minded dedication to charitable works, both big and small. Like Diana, the Fiesta Bowl understands that teachers and mentors—though often the ones providing support to others—need to be supported right back. In 2016, the Fiesta Bowl Charities launched Wishes for Teachers, powered by DriveTime. The program grants classroom wishes to teachers across the state of Arizona. As a way to support, celebrate and honor Arizona educators, teachers are invited to fill out an online application detailing their school and classroom wish. Wishes are selected by a random drawing to receive a $5,000 grant. All wish recipients are invited to walk in the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade and be recognized on-field at the Cheez-It® Bowl. In its first three years, Wishes for Teachers granted over $2.2 million to Arizona teachers, impacting over 100,000 children across the state. Another $1 million was granted a few weeks ago to 200 statewide teachers.
Fiesta Bowl Charities' KaBOOM! playground.
In 2018, six $5,000 grants were given in Chandler, to teachers at John M. Andersen Elementary, Jordan Center For Early Education, Bologna Elementary, San Marcos Elementary School, Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School and San Tan Junior High. When taking the entire Southeast Valley into account, 40 total grants were given in the area last year, totaling $200,000. Through its two annual bowl games in the Valley, the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl and the Cheez-It® Bowl, as well as community events throughout the year, Fiesta Bowl Charities has given more than $15.5 million across the state of Arizona in the last nine years, including $3 million in 2019 alone. On Sat., Dec. 28 at 9 a.m., Diana invites the entire state of Arizona to join her at the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade. Beyond Diana and her fellow female trailblazers, the event will feature various brilliantly colored floats, giant balloons, equestrian units, charitable groups, local celebrities and marching bands that will make their way down the two-mile route through Central Phoenix. Admission is free to the public, with premium and reserved seating available for $30. The event is broadcast live on Arizona’s Family 3TV. Every year, a combination of more than 2,500 men, women, children, floats, balloons and animals are part of the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade. November 2019 | Chandler Lifestyle

BUTTERNUT SQUASH & BACON CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS + 3 lbs. butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into
ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
1/2-inch cubes + 3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, divided + 3 Tbsp. fresh sage leaves, minced + 1 red onion, chopped + 1/2 lb. bacon, diced + 6 large eggs + 1 1/2 cups whole milk + 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese + 8 oz. baguette, crusts removed and bread cut into 1/2-inch cubes + Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 400° F. Grease a Farberware 9x13-inch baking pan. In a large bowl, toss the butternut squash with 2 Tbsp. of olive oil and the sage. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Spread the squash on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast until tender, about 25 minutes, tossing once halfway through. Let cool. Meanwhile, in a medium skillet, heat 1 Tbsp. of olive oil. Add the bacon, cook on low heat until just starting to crisp, then add the onions. Cook over low heat, stirring, until the onions are tender. Let cool. In a large bowl beat eggs together with the milk. Add 1 tsp. of salt and 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper. Stir in the bread and let stand for 10 minutes. Fold in the squash and the bacon and onions. Transfer the mixture to a prepared casserole dish and bake for about 1 hour, until lightly golden on top. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving. The prepared casserole can be covered and refrigerated or frozen several days before baking. —Theresa Greco 34

“This pumpkin pie recipe is so tasty that you would never guess that it is gluten-free, vegan and refined sugar-free. Coconut milk adds an extra touch of creaminess in this easy and healthy holiday recipe!”—Kristin Wood
VEGAN, GLUTEN-FREE PUMPKIN PIE INGREDIENTS + 1 batch gluten-free and vegan pre-prepared pie crust dough (can use regular, as well) + 1 15 oz. can pumpkin puree + 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp. maple syrup + 1/4 cup tapioca starch + 1 tsp. ground ginger + 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon + 1/4 tsp. ground cloves + 1/4 tsp. sea salt or pink salt + 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp. full fat coconut milk
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Take prepared pie crust dough and evenly press into the bottoms and sides of a greased pie dish. Prick the dough with a fork. Optionally press or crimp the edges as desired. Set aside. In a large bowl combine pumpkin, maple syrup, tapioca flour, spices and salt. Whisk until smooth. Pour in coconut milk. Mix until smooth. Pour pie filling into prepared pie crust shell. Smooth the top evenly with the back of a spoon. Place into preheated oven and bake for 1 hour or until the filling is set but still has a slight jiggle in the center and the crust edges are turning golden. Remove and let cool, then place in the refrigerator to cool and set for at least 4 hours before serving. Optionally, top with a dollop of whipped coconut cream before serving. Enjoy! —Kristin Wood
