I have a confession to make. I'm not in the best shape of my life. In the last few years, I've had two kids, worked full time, and made A LOT of excuses for why I needed a bowl of chips at 11 p.m. or why I needed to binge-watch something instead of planking. But that's all about to change. I know, I know, it's just another short-lived New Year's resolution, right? Nope, not this time. See, this time, I'm staring down the barrel of my 40th birthday in March, and I rapidly realize that having toddlers is a full-on contact sport of its own, so it's time to get real about my fitness. That's why I've given myself a new hashtag--#20by40. That's right; my goal is to lose 20 pounds by the end of March. Luckily, I started this goal back in November, so I'm doing it healthfully. And if I fall short of 20 lbs but can chase my three-year-old

DAVIDSON ELEMENTARY COMPLETES SOCK DRIVE It’s the number one requested need of the homeless…socks! Students at Davidson Elementary Schools created “Socks to the Rescue” collecting socks during the month of November. The number of donated socks tops 800, twice the number of students attending the school, which is part of North Kansas City Schools. Wanting to give back to their community, this service project developed after a brainstorming session by Davidson Elementary Student Council. Researching different opportunities to help those in need, students discovered a coat drive and food drive were already in place. Their focus narrowed to helping the homeless. Once students learned socks topped the list of

ANNA ALESSI IS NOT YOUR STEREOTYPICAL SPIN INSTRUCTOR. Sure, she motivates participants in her class at Cycle of Heart to work their bodies, but she’s much more interested in encouraging them to use the stationary bikes to work out their problems and realize their bodies’ potential. Rather than being another SoulCycle clone, Cycle of Heart is a place for riders to get in touch with their inner spirit. Alessi understands the struggles of body image. As a child, she struggled with her weight. For the past 18 years, she has worked hard to come to a place of acceptance and self-love for her body--not just what it looks like but what work it can accomplish. It wasn’t until another girl (her daughter), came into her life that she knew that she had to take a bold step and go for her unrealized dream of creating a space of wellness and acceptance. “Six years ago, I had my daughter, and everything changed. How am I going to tell her that she can accomplish anything and to follow her dreams if I’m playing it safe and not realizing mine?” she says.

All proceeds from the rides were donated to the Wilkerson Food Pantry in Liberty. The pantry feeds more than 300 families in the Liberty area each year. The success of the Thanksgiving ride was thrilling for Alessi. “It was so encouraging that after just five weeks of being open, we were able to involve 30 people

The Wilkerson Food Pantry is such a great organization. I can’t wait to drop their check off,” she says. Alessi plans to host many more of the charity rides and offers members the option to do a birthday donation ride. “For birthday rides, the birthday person can invite 14 of their friends to ride. They each donate $40, and the proceeds are given to a charity of the birthday person’s choice. We can incorporate some of their favorite songs in the ride, and make it a fun experience for everyone,” she says. Alessi has been amazed at the outpouring of love and support that she’s seen so far. “Someone stopped by on Small Business Saturday with a gift basket for us. The reception has just been amazing,” she says. That love from the community is reflected in each ride at Cycle of Heart. For class times and info, visit CycleOfHeart.com. BUILDING RESILIENCY (CONTINUED)
is one of the keys to their success. Working with Tri-County to package and design and funded by ATT&T, the How Full is Your Cup campaign is now being slowly implemented across the Northland. “It’s essentially a healthy stress management skills program. It explains stress like a cup. The more stress you have in your life, the more your cup fills. The program centers on three main takeaways. One, everyone has a cup, and it fills up. Everyone experiences stress and loss, and that’s okay. Two, everyone’s cup fills up differently, so what might not affect one person may severely impact the next. Everyone experiences stress at a different level. And three, there are healthy ways to deal with that stress,” says Robinson. The program zooms in on two recurring ideas—trauma and resiliency. While many may think of trauma as an extreme action in a stereotypical way, Jennifer says that trauma can be different for every child. “There’s really no standard for what trauma looks like. Everyone deals with stress differently. Even within families, you may see different responses, and that’s okay. Our goal is to see that trauma and acknowledge its impact and teach them how to bounce back,” she says. That bounce, more commonly known as resiliency in mental health circles, is a focus of all of the smaller coalitions in the area, including the recently formed Tonka Nation Teaching and Reaching Youth (Try). Tonka Try and others like it in the area are trying to bridge the gap between mental health professionals and the kids that don’t know where to turn. 24

BUILDING RESILIENCY (CONTINUED)
Tonka Try president Stephen Mattingly says that one of the things that add to the risk factors is the unwillingness of parents to talk openly about mental health struggles with their kids. “It’s easy to say, ‘You’ve never thought about suicide, right?’. But that gives them an out, an opportunity to let them say no without any deeper discussion of possible stresses. Finding out that your child may be suicidal can make you feel like you’ve failed as a parent. But not having those conversations is where the real failure happens,” says Mattingly. Youth suicide isn’t a problem that will be solved easily, but the people at the Northland Coalition, Tri-County Mental Health Services, and national organizations like NAMI, are doing their best to arm our youth with the tools they need to maintain their mental health and resiliency. If you’re looking for additional resources, visit EncourageHopeAndHelp.com to access a broad spectrum of tools, including the SOS program, a suicide text line (741741), or the National Suicide Prevention Helpline at 1-800-273-8255. 26

Lisa Ca r to o sa FOR LISA CARTOOSA, HER FITNESS JOURNEY IS ROOTED IN CONNECTION. After trying and failing to lose weight and get healthy over the years, she found herself yearning for a change at the age of 48. “I was the heaviest I’ve ever been, and it was starting to get hard to go up and down the stairs. Something had to change,” she says. In the year and a half since she walked into the Aurora Health and Wellness Center, Cartoosa’s whole life has changed. She’s lost 65 lbs and gained a new vocation--fitness instructor with the Les Mills fitness system. What made the difference for her? Connection to people that invested in her well-being. NORTHLAND LIFESTYLE: WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT FOR YOU WHEN IT CAME TO COMMITTING TO YOUR HEALTH? LISA CARTOOSA: The first person that I connected with was Kayla. I didn’t know how to plug in my headphones into the treadmill. I asked her if she worked there and she said yes. She helped me figure that out and then asked me if I was interested in training. She was my first connection and my first foundation here. I started coming back because I couldn’t let Kayla down. My method of operation has always been to start the diet and the gym and then disappear. There was nothing that kept me going. For me, it was the people that kept me coming back. I trained with Kayla for nine months, met some of the other trainers, and then Sarah Esposito asked me if I was interested in a part-time position at the front desk. I said, yes. NL: WHAT TRAINING MODALITY WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FOR YOU?
FROM NEWBIE TO LEADER--A FITNESS LOVER'S JOURNEY
LC: My first class was Zumba because I love to dance. And I left that class in tears because I couldn’t move my body the way I remembered. I have always had a bathing suit phobia. But that

until I had made enough progress to try the land-based classes. Kayla told me to do the pool and weight lift with her. I lost the majority of my weight in the pool. And I always thought, ‘Oh, aquatics classes are for old people.’ But the pool eliminates the pain on your joints and lets you ease into things. 32

WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

FEELING ANXIOUS
A regular yoga practice can help to ease anxiety by increasing body awareness, reducing muscle tension, relieving stress and sharpening attention + concentration.

RUNNING There’s a reason people who are active runners describe something called a “runner’s high.” Studies show that aerobic exercises release

mood-boosting endorphins.
BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.
C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.
ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10K’s or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.
01 K E T T L E B E L L SW I N G S Do as many reps as possible in 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.
02 H I G H K N E E S Climb it out for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.
03 P L A N K Hold your plank for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest. Repeat the circuit three times for a quick workout that touches on strength, cardio + core.
