Let’s remember to show some additional love and patience to the kids in our lives and community this fall as things are far from what they are used to, and they have all lost valuable and important experiences. Some kids are easy to shower with attention, love, and praise or extend grace to because they know how to receive it well, but the ones who push you away or struggle with receiving it are often the ones that need it the most. As summer comes to a close, take this time to give a little extra support to our youth. Love, Angela

meeting community needs with technology LOCAL STUDENTS SUPPORT HEALTH CARE WORKERS THROUGH 3D PRINTING
THIS SPRING WAS A CHALLENGING AND DISAPPOINTING SEASON FOR MANY HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS LOOKING FORWARD TO GRADUATION CELEBRATIONS AND FUN LIFE EVENTS, YET A TEAM OF LOCAL STUDENTS USED THE SITUATION AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EQUIP LOCAL HEALTHCARE WORKERS ON THE FRONTLINES DURING THE PANDEMIC. Aaditya Pore, a senior at Olathe East High School, and Ethan Jagoda, a senior at Blue Valley North High School, started FreePPEKC to manufacture 3D-printed face shields and other personal protective equipment for health care workers. Aaditya says when school closed in March, they saw the situation getting worse and heard about the shortage of personal protective equipment for health care workers. The idea for FreePPEKC came to them as both students are involved in the Technology Student Association and have made science, math, technology and engineering the emphasis of their educational pursuits. FOREVER FARMHOUSE YOUNG FAMILY BRINGS FRESH LIFE INTO OLD FAMILY FARM
ARTICLE LISA MOYER PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
EIGHT YEARS AGO, MILLENNIALS BRITT AND BROOKE DOWD BOUGHT A FARM, AND PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS ASKING FOR THEIR BACK 40 STORY. “You seem too young…how did you get here?” they ask. But the Dowds take it as a compliment. They’re just old souls with a fresh flair. They sit down to dinner together as a family no matter how hectic the day gets, and the day can get pretty hectic. But they embrace it all. “We’re working hard because we’re blessed and blessed because we’re working hard,” they say, “and God is good.” As founders and owners of Green Again Lawn Care in Spring Hill since 2012, the Dowds purchased the 40-acre farm in Paola from Britt’s parents after they got married. It provided more room to store equipment and products for their business plus breathing room to expand their family and their farm-loving lifestyle. 16

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED)
“ALWAYS HAVE A SUPPER TABLE BIG ENOUGH TO SHARE YOUR LIFE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY.” “We have always had a love for the outdoors and children and animals,” they say. Britt and Brooke both attended Olathe high schools and went on to graduate together from MidAmerica Nazarene University. A few months into dating, Britt bought Brooke her first horse, and from then on, they started planning to live their lives forever on a farm. Today, with their two toddler daughters, Remi, 3, and Sage, 2, the Dowd family takes care of their chickens, ducks, cattle, three horses (RayRay, Navy and Sheba), one dog (Bear), two cats (Chewy and Emme Elle), and their two kittens (Peaches & Cream). “We have a routine of checking on our little farm animals and letting our toddlers play with them. Feeding the chickens, ducks, cats, dog and checking on the horses. Then the girls usually want to go ride around the pasture on our four-wheeler, and we’re also teaching them how to ride horses. Every day is a little different. Sometimes we’re maintaining our field, mending our fence, building a new chicken coop or giving medicine to sick cows or horses. Sometimes we get a call in the middle of the night that one of our cows has escaped, so it’s not all cute and idyllic. But we love being able to experience God’s creation of wide open space and beautiful land with no one around. We have a couple of ponds that we fish in the summer, and in the winter, Britt loves to deer hunt.” Hard work, responsibility, passion for the outdoors, and faith in God are the four tenets they hope to instill into their daughters. And stay tuned for more children and animals to come. The Dowds are currently rebuilding the original 1965 brick house on their property so they can continue to grow their family. “We started the house completely from scratch,” Brooke says. “I’m obsessed with antique finds like old church pews and blue mason jars and pretty much anything made out of old wood, and I think it all looks amazing with our Chip and Jo style farmhouse which includes shiplap in the dining room.” Because their farm was previously owned by Britt’s family prior to purchase, it has always been known to them as the Dowd Farm – a namesake they will continue. “With that historic feel and family dynamic,” Brooke says, “I could never leave.” www.greenagainlawn.com 18

THE FUTURE OF US IS A LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION PROVIDING CHARACTER-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS FROM UNDERFUNDED AND UNDER-ACKNOWLEDGED COMMUNITIES. Three Kansas City, Mo. Ruskin High School graduates who went on to graduate college quickly realized opportunities are not equal and access is not unbiased. In March 2020, just two months after brainstorming how to fix this problem, the scholarship fund for underprivileged youth was created and built on the belief of investing in merits, not metrics. CEO Brenan Latimer and COO Precious Awopetu are driven by their passion to give back to their communities. “After having gone through college, we realized that students from more affluent communities had a much different perspective on attending college than the majority of our classmates,” Latimer says. “Being from a high school that is underfunded, we experienced a lack of collegiate resources and support, and we understand how impactful an organization like The Future of Us can be.” The process for choosing a recipient is unlike other scholarships. “Rather than judging students by their GPA, ACT score or other on-paper statistics that try to quantify how good of a candidate they are, we consider the actual person we are investing in. We like our awardees to be motivated, kind, charitable, hardworking, humble, honest, creative and passionate. Applicants submit a work that they feel most effectively conveys a message of their choosing—this can be a response to one (or more) of the prompts that we provide, or the topic can be chosen by the students themselves. They can choose to respond with a full-length essay or submit a non-traditional body of work (a short creative story, a painting, a video, etc.) as long as they provide a written work to supplement their creative one explaining their motivation, the significance of their submission, the impact or other important details surrounding their work. “We then choose students to move on to an interview round. When they meet with us, we have a conversation to learn more about them and they get to learn more about us. Prior to final selection, we may or may not perform a reference check with their school administration or teachers depending on how passionately we feel about our candidates, and then we choose a winner.”

THE FUTURE OF US (CONTINUED)
Their very first winner aspires to receive a degree in psychology followed by law school. “Myati Vonziah is a first generation Ghanaian-American who’s worked very hard to become a first generation college student as well. In high school, she was in debate, played soccer, danced and was in band. She’s very community oriented, frequently volunteering her time at Harvesters. She values a strong self-identity, as she is very invested in her own culture, and she encourages everyone to “be yourself, be yourself, be yourself.” A proverb she was often told by her mother while she was growing up that has stuck with her into young adulthood is “a child who can’t hear can feel.” As she looks toward college, she is both motivated and nervous yet excited to meet new people. She wants to work toward obtaining a degree in psychology and then go to law school.” The Future of Us plans on expanding their footprint within the community. “We want to work more closely with high school students as they prepare for college. We plan to have panels and discussions led by college students and community professionals for high school students to attend and ask questions. We plan to have fundraisers as well as community outreach and involvement events. We want to grow and be able to help as many students as we can. We envision a network of former students helping current students, and current students helping future students—a community investing in itself. “We look toward our communities to help guide, encourage and inspire students. There will be opportunities for people to donate their time to talk to students, lend us their expertise to help advise students, or just be a connection in a student’s professional network. Of course, donations are always appreciated. You can do this through the donation tab on our website.” For more information on how to get involved and donate, visit thefouscholarship.com.

Say it louder with color!” Her approach for portraits remains consistent among different subjects—considering different variables to highlight what makes them unique. “Portraiture is all about using different lighting setups based on your subject—think hair color, skin tone, and even age of the subject,” she says. “I focus my lighting techniques with animals to bring out their unique traits and characteristics. I consider the length of coat, stature, their eyes...how I can light the subject to bring out the unique characteristics of the animal.” When considering colors for the background of a personal photoshoot, she will select one based on what she’s feeling that day or pick a color she hasn’t used in a while to spice things up. Ultimately, she doesn’t want her work to be tied to any specific color family, so she will throw in neutral colors or an unexpected bold color into the mix. She mentions that her portfolio showcases a lot of pinks and pastel blues, primarily because she likes the way dogs pop off of pastel colors. “I’m endlessly fascinated by creating and shaping light,” she says. “You can change the [message] of an image with the placement, shape and angle of light. This also affects the mood of the image. Just a slight change of light modifier can take the image from flat to dramatic.” During a photoshoot, Pusateri says she is always moving and will typically hit her step goal on shoot days well before lunch.

PLAYFUL PORTRAITS (CONTINUED)
“The style of my shooting is really animated,” she says. “I’m laying down, tummy-first stretched out on the floor, or I’m pretzeled into some other position to get that shot. I’m not sure how other photographers work, but for as long as my body is able to do so, I will 110 percent sacrifice any of my own personal comfort to get that shot.” She adds that anticipation, composition and timing contribute to a successful photoshoot. “Animals don’t have the same patience that humans do to sit still for a session, so it’s anticipating movement and being quick to capture those magical moments when you have their attention and they’re hitting their mark,” she says. Working with animals presents its own challenges, such as the communication barrier or short attention spans, but she has found many benefits in her work, like the joy dogs bring to set. “My family didn’t have pets growing up, so for a girl who asked Santa for a puppy every year—I’ve got the dream job!” she says. 32

Now, Lewis has two dogs that continue to play a significant role in her own family, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This pandemic has affected everyone in so many ways and the unknown of what is ahead is so stressful,” she says. “However, the love of a pet is something that is constant and never changing. The unconditional love they give us is the one constant we have right now and I know that provides me comfort. I know my dog Stewart is always to curl up next to my feet every night. Think carefully about the proposed terms of a divorce settlement
The process of divorcing is often complex and difficult. There are a few things that make this even more challenging. Having numerous assets or having an ex who is not willing to work to come to mutually agreeable terms are two of these. Individuals might not want to think about having to battle things out in court, but it may be necessary if the settlement negotiations are not successful. Negotiating the terms of the divorce requires that both parties in the matter be willing to compromise. In most cases, neither party is going to get everything they want. Being able to think clearly about how various arrangements impact them
may help as they evaluate the potential options. It is usually best to think about what aspects of the end of the marriage they want to focus. For example, they might not care about what happens to the marital home, but they may want to keep their special art collection. In these cases, a strategy can be worked out that increases the chance of that happening. Determining what is truly important to them can also help them to save their energy for those matters. Parties should think about the long-term implications of the settlement. This includes taking a look at how the arrangements will affect their finances in the future. Assets that are costly to keep up might not be ideal when they are trying to survive solely on their own in-
come. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the possible settlement options to ensure they make informed decisions. THE YOU MATTER FESTIVAL, AN EVENT PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND SUICIDE PREVENTION, WAS FOUNDED BY LOCAL TEEN AND MUSICIAN WILL GURLEY. Gurley has struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation himself and relied heavily on music in his times of need. “When I was struggling, the most important things for me were counseling, my family and friends, and writing music,” Gurley says. “Logic performed his song “1-800-273-8255” (which is the national suicide prevention hotline phone number) at the 2018 Grammy Awards, and something sparked inside of me. I knew that I had to use music to help spread a message of hope to our suffering community.” This year’s festival is August 15 from 6-9 p.m. and will be online due to the current health crisis. You can tune in by visiting youmatterfestival.net. “The main goal is to bring as much awareness to this epidemic that we are facing through music and teens sharing their stories,” Gurley explains. The bands performing in this year’s festival are local musicians of teens and young adults from around our city. Here is a breakdown of the performances to enjoy at this year’s festival.

THE WHIPS The Whips are a party music collective born in the spirit of the Jackson 5, The E Street Band, and other historically great ensembles of rock and soul. Rooted in its core members: Multi-instrumentalist Max Indiveri, Vocalist Aidan Connelly, Bassist Quinn Cosgrove, Drummer Miles Patterson, and Guitarist Vincent Lee, this group is also no stranger to guest features from some of the best local musicians in Kansas City. Featuring a mix of classic covers, and their own brand of high powered soul, The Whip’s high flying dance fest is a one-way trip to getting lost in the groove.
WILL GURLEY Will Gurley, the founder and president of the You Matter Festival, is back for his third year on the festival stage. Will has been playing music for as long as he can remember, being raised on the classic rock artists of the ’70s and ’80s. Will began writing his own music at age 14, using it as an outlet for his emotions. Blending genres of classic rock, contemporary pop, and metal, Will Gurley’s music is streaming on Apple Music, Spotify, and all other streaming services. Joining Will is LIVAGAIN, including Jeff Gurley on lead guitar, Olivia Gurley on lead and backup vocals, and Luke Nolkemper on drums. The band delivers an electric performance of old classics, new hits and original music by Will Gurley. Expect an alternative metal album from LIVAGAIN soon.
QUITE FRANKLY With a lot of hard work, supportive family, and help from the local music community, Quite Frankly the Band was launched. Quickly crossing the line from imagination into reality, these young musicians began performing live on stage, playing multiple genres of music from rock to pop, and even a little blues and country. Two short years later, Quite Frankly is no longer an emerging band, but a professional band with seasoned musicians. A band you need to hear. Since conception, Quite Frankly has opened for national touring acts and began recording Quite Frankly Photo: Paul Versluis

BACK STAGE (CONTINUED) They gigged Nashville, won the Nelson-Atkins Battle of the Bands and even helped with Big Slick. The band is forever grateful for the incredible support from fans and local venues in Kansas City that took a chance on a bunch of high school kids. 2020 was looking to be the biggest year yet, with a gig in LA at the infamous Whisky a GoGo and a spot for Boulevardia. Unfortunately, both events were rescheduled due to COVID, but a few events have remained on the calendar. Catch Quite Frankly at the Sunset Music Fest and You Matter Festival. INDIA JANE India Jane is an 18-year-old singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. In the fall she will be an incoming film major at Northwestern University, but she spends her free time writing songs in the indie-rock style she grew up listening to. She considers herself more of a poet than a musician, but still pretends to know a lot about guitars, mostly out of spite. She has long been an advocate for LGBT+ youth and mental health awareness, and often explores those aspects of her own identity through her poetry and songwriting in lyrically focused folk ballads. She started writing songs at the age of 5 and never stopped. Some of her biggest musical inspirations are Declan McKenna, Xenia Rubinos, and The Greeting Committee. You can find her on Instagram at @ndiajane, or on Twitter at @indiiajane, and she hopes to have a debut single on streaming platforms very soon.
HOLES IN SOCKS Holes in Socks is a cover band specializing in classic rock, and alternative music of today. The group consists of Jack Hancock (piano), Josh Robinson (drums), Scott Wyatt (guitar), Patrick Schmidt (saxophone, guitar), and Will Hancock (bass/vocals). be newer as a group their playing experience and musical knowledge is vast and extremely experienced for their age. Josh Robinson is an All-State percussionist and center snare at BVNW. Patrick Schmidt will be attending Wichita State University for music education and has been trained in a plethora of different instruments. Jack Hancock got paid like 100 bucks to play at Nebraska Furniture Mart and was asked to music direct his middle school musical next year. Scott Wyatt made Wind Symphony his freshman year and is an avid athlete. Will Hancock is a three-year All State Choir member, and has played and recorded with different bands around the KC area.
