Arts + Romance FEBRUARY OUR MONTH OF ART—ROMANCE, COLLECTING, ADMIRING AND LEARNING. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us.

Through art, we learn about ourselves. When thinking of ideas for our Arts issue, we were inspired by the talented local creatives who beautify our community with their work. Whether it’s local theater performances, the Patchogue arts scene, music or handmade goods from local artisans, we were inspired by the creative culture our city is bursting with. We hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. So, Patchogue, while you fill your home with chocolate truffles and roses this month, remember to fill your heart too. Find what makes you feel alive—and don’t forget to share it with us. You never know—we may see you around!

Date Night Done Right TREAT YOURSELF TO A NEW LOOK FOR THE MOST ROMANTIC DAY OF THE YEAR

ARTICLE GENEVIEVE GARRUPPO PHOTOGRAPHY BENNY MIGLIORINO

WE ALL KNOW JANUARY IS THE MONTH OF WELLNESS. We set our resolutions, diligently go to the gym after indulging in holiday feasts and we buckle down for the long winter stretch. But then, as February sweeps in, we’re reminded of yet another holiday- one that some feel is created to just sell more Hallmark cards and eat mediocre chocolates but is a celebration of love nonetheless. Valentine’s Day! This year, treat yourself to some new threads and a blowout on the day of love for your valentine, or more importantly, for yourself! We teamed up with Salon Del Rio in Blue Point and Thred in Patchogue to show us some new looks for a Valentine’s Day date night. Photography Benny Migs was on site to capture each pose from models Michele Dibartolo and Jessica Peragine. HAIR: A freshly tousled curl will never go out of style. After a quick blow dry, section off the hair and wrap around a large-barrel curling iron or wand, hold for a few seconds and release and spray. Then comb through with fingers to achieve the perfect waves. (Always spray after applying heat and not before to protect the hair!) Del Rio Salon & Day Spa delriosalon.com Thred thredny.com

VALENTINE’S DAY AT STELLA TRATTORIA & BAR

ARTICLE CHRIS LIZ PHOTOGRAPHY BENNY MIGLIORINO

16

Patchogue Lifestyle | February 2020

“I WALKED INTO THE RESTAURANT AND I IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE.” Since opening Stella Trattoria & Bar in Blue Point in 2016, owner Jack Martino says he does all that he can to see to it that his customers fall in love with his venue as well. This Valentine’s Day you could cozy up with your love, in one of the venue’s banquettes. There’s a grand piano in the main dining area where you’ll be serenaded by a local pianist. You may also enjoy your meal, in front of the fireplace, with a bottle of wine, off the expansive list that Stella offers. “Stella was designed to bring a class of people that enjoy life. Martino says the foundation of his menu began in 1970- half a century ago- with recipes from his mother’s kitchen, back in Sicily. It includes Italian classics such as veal sorrentino & penne alla vodka as well as sexier dishes like Seafood Lovers Special, that includes sautéed clams, shrimps, mussels, calamari, scungilli in a robust marinara or fra diavolo over linguine. Stella will also have a Prix Fixe menu for Valentine’s Day. That menu was still being created at press time. “We are the restaurant of today that offers the old world recipes with a modern flair/flare,” says Martino. You and yours could also dine, or enjoy drinks, at the bar that is stocked with a 16 bottle Cruvinet wine dispenser, temperature controlled system, designed to keep wines as fresh as the day they were uncorked. “During the process of building restaurants, I always found that it’s very important to build a restaurant around a name. Stella” , Martino says, “means star.” The venue and it’s location- right on the north east corner of Montauk Highway at Nichols Road, has been a star in Martino’s eyes since he was first given a glance inside. It was 15 or 16 year ago, he says a friend of his just purchased it -under a different name then. The owner invited Martino- a seasoned restauranteur to check it out. He says he walked inside and bam! “I immediately fell in love,” He compares it to the tale of - ‘the girl who got away, who you run into years later. “I fell in love with Stella 15-16 years ago,” he says, “and when it came up for sale, I had to have it.” stellatrattoria.com February 2020 | Patchogue Lifestyle

ART IS IN THE AIR

MUSICIAN-CERAMICIST-SCULPTOR MOVER'S & MAKER'S

“ FIND INSPIRATION IN THE NATURAL WORLD AROUND US, THE CHANGE OF SEASONS AND THE NATURAL EARTH.”

BILL SHILLALIES BILL SHILLALIES IS A DISTINGUISHED CERAMICIST, CREATING ART FOR OVER 40 YEARS. For over a decade, he has been a friend of the Patchogue Arts Council and yearly hosts a raku party fundraiser for the public to come and share his love of pottery. For the party, Shillalies makes several pots for guests to paint and fires them in a kiln, then placing them carefully in a pile of woodchips which actually ignites the reactive paint, creating a metallic effect. It’s a brilliant way of getting the public involved with the Arts Council. Shalllies’s life work centers around clay but he has occasionally worked in bronze. Inspired by nature, he spends a majority of his time walking the beautiful local beaches and discovering a new forest to hike through. Ranging from a large ceramic orb displayed outdoors to a woodfired tabletop sculpture, all of Shalllies’ work is reminiscent of a rock formation or texture that could easily occur in nature. He takes his craft seriously but the scale of certain pieces suggests that he keeps a special sense of playfulness at heart. When asked about his work down the road, Shalliles’ future is bright. “I feel I am always evolving working with texture, color and ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY GENEVIEVE GARRUPPO

KATIA READ

In Katia Read’s Bellport studio, you’ll find her working with stoneware and terra cotta but in a much different fashion than your average sculptor. She works in a reductive process, removing the clay piece by piece to create the sculpture. Once formed, the sculptures are fired in a kiln but not glazed, allowing the natural color and texture to shine through. Her most recent collection, Habitat, mimics the life at the bottom of the Great South Bay and was shown last summer at Gallery 125 in Bellport Village. Each piece is an abstract representation of a mollusk, sunbleached and smooth from the water’s current underneath the surface. Read’s inspiration goes beyond nature alone. When asked about interests outside of sculpting, she waxed poetic about the importance of sea life in our own backyard. “I often work with the environmental group, Friends of Bellport Bay, planting shellfish to filter the bay have brought me closer to the community.” Every day she completes a drawing or collage and keeps her eyes and ears open to the natural world and urban environments to continue the momentum of creativity. And what’s in store for Read in 2020? Perhaps working with molten glass and a continued effort to improve the qual-

active, albeit sleepy town. Ample parking, including a thoughtful designated space for the mobility impaired, plus a self check-in make the luxury of time our friend. It’s cheery with its red shutters and scarlet-cushioned chairs paired up alongside colorful bistro tables along the farmer’s porch, stationed in anticipation of the sunrise that gives the lodgings its name. We walk in to the cozily lit living room, unobstructed by the formality of a reception desk or foyer. Instead, an immediate welcome is the first impression we get, where large checkers await challengers on a maple table, a couch posts up behind a salvaged wood-style coffee table, and two leather easy chairs become invitations with the presence of jaunty throw pillows in Americana patterns. ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)

A turn of the key at Room 2 has us pleasantly surprised at what the wildly affordable off-season rates offer visitors to Montauk. There’s a full-sized navy sofa accented with tastefully beachy toss pillows and a rustic chest serving duty as a coffee table. Directly before it, a fireplace—the clear show-stealer from the flat-screen TV in the corner we would surely not use this weekend. Around the corner is a classic queen bed, made up to the luxurious nines with puffy pillows and layers upon layers of bedding perfect for snuggling under as winter winds audibly blow across the ocean outdoors. We can hear it beyond the many windows of the rooms, including the ones above the bench seating in the bedroom. An unexpectedly spacious bathroom impresses, its driftwood gray floors and marble vanity a contemporary surprise after the more homey decor of the rest of the bed-andbreakfast. Gleaming white subway tile lines the walls, and beneath a delightfully high-pressure rainfall showerhead, rock-style flooring. We fall asleep easily in such comfortable surroundings, and before we know it, the sun rises to greet us, stretching fingers of tangerine sherbet and lilac over an indigo Atlantic finally visible after our evening drive out east. It’s in this moment—hands held in bed, peering around the corner to the fierytouched sea as a quietly serene day of winter hikes, boutique shopping, and uninterrupted quality time begins--that you realize the true beauty of that simple request: “Meet me in Montauk.” See more photos at lifestylepubs.com/patchogue

CONTRIBUTION IN THE NAME OF ART

THE CORE TO ANY FLOURING COMMUNITY IS AN ACTIVE ART SCENE AND PATCHOGUE IS IN FULL BLOOM. The majority of programming ahead in 2020 is made possible by the constant support of the community and love of the arts. Two major organizations come to mind when thinking of art in our community: The Patchogue Arts Council and The Patchogue Theatre. This year, we can look forward to The Patchogue Theater to put on a performance of the harrowing life of Anne Frank, bring world-renowned Branford Marsalis to perform his latest Jazz album, and screenings of feature films like Titanic, West Side Story, and Rocky just to name a few. And The Patchogue Arts Council’s theme for all programming this year is “Clear Vision for 20/20” which will kick off with Dyptics, curated by John Cino, including work by artists Tobi Kahn, Jason Paradis, Kimberly Radochia, Darlene Charneco, Jayne Dion and Jessie Smillie. All of this is possible because of the generous donations from people like you! Patchogue Arts Council, or PAC, had it’s conception and creation over a decade ago. Now, the board of directors is comprised of Lori Devlin, Jennifer Berotti, Jessie Valentin, Loretta Corbisero, Lori Hand, Dr. Thomas Ferb, Beth Giacummo (Gallery Director)

and John Cino (Senior Curator and Program Director) all who are artists or art historians or collectors in their own right. Their mission is to support the development of artists at any stage in their career. They encourage new work, hold events that expand to all walks of life, and enrich the culture of our community. Museums are a place to enjoy the benefits of art; to be inspired to create, to learn, or to experience. PAC’s gallery has always served this purpose for the community. ” When thinking about a gallery space, one might immediately think of the sale of art. The goal of the Patchogue Arts Council is not to sell art, but the intention is to make art accessible. Funding comes from the many fundraisers that are held throughout the year. Biennials, Walking Arts Tours, Patchogue Arts Festivals, PAC MAC festivals, exhibits and public art installations have enhanced the reputation of Patchogue as a vibrant cultural center, all while giving PAC the tools to continue to build and grow. One of the more exciting fundraisers is the annuel Raku party, hosted by various members of the council in conjunction with Bill Shillalies. For the past 10 years, supporters of the arts and their guests have been painting pots and enjoying the raku process, all while getting to take home their creations! Keep an eye out for all announcements at patchoguearts.org. The historic Patchogue Theatre venue that originally opened as Ward & Glynne’s Theater in 1923 has gone through severals evolutions in the near-century it’s been open. Initially, the theatre was used as a fully functioning playhouse presenting the rise and fall of vaudeville in the 1930’s. Then, about twenty years later after a fire damaged the lobby, it was stripped (well, thankfully just covered up) of its ornate interior in the 1950’s. Moving into the 1980’s, the theatre was just used to screen movies and other forms of the performing arts were put on hold. Then, in 1996, three local businessmen came up with the initial funds to purchase the Theatre while the Incorporated Village of Patchogue applied for grants to renovate and restore the venue to its former glory, allowing us to enjoy the many fruits of the arts into today. PatchogueTheatre.org has a wealth of information in regards to the programming and future events that the organization is planning on, but also full transparency in how the theatre is run. “Although the Village of Patchogue owns the historic Patchogue Theatre venue, the staff and volunteers of Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts manage the Theatre, under the leadership of a volunteer board of directors, through a community-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit arts organization known as the Patchogue Village Center for the Performing Arts. PTPA leases the building from The Village of Patchogue and covers all of the costs of operating the building, including programming, without any taxpayer subsidies” which makes it all the more important to donate and participate in the various fundraisers that are put on throughout the year.
