Polo in the Pines is 100% volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to the mission of funding specific cancer research, spreading awareness and family support partnered with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. From kitchen and bathroom remodeling to whole home remodeling, their in-house design team works with clients to create and design their vision from the ground up. We sat down with David after his team completed this project in Alpharetta.

SGC: I understand you’ve done business with this family in Alpharetta before, finishing their basement 20 years ago, a year after your business opened. Then, you renovated the kitchen last year and bathrooms most recently. That’s amazing! Tell us about the most recent work. What were your goals and the homeowner’s goals with the renovation?

DM: They have four children that have grown up in the house so it had plenty of wear and tear of those years. The house has great bones as it CONTINUED >

was built with 10 foot ceilings which was not as common back in the late 90’s. The family wanted an updated design that would create a more open feel and a connected space between the kitchen and family rooms. We removed the wall, added hardwood floors in the family room to connect the two rooms better. All of the hardwood floors on the main level of the house were sanded and stained in a light grey color. A full repaint of the interior was also completed.

SGC: Removing a wall in the kitchen meant loss of storage. How did you solve that issue?

DM: We developed a plan to remove the small pantry area and expand that space to allow for larger pantry cabinets with lots of roll out storage and organizational space. That way, we kept all the wonderful windows along the back wall while opening up the living areas.

SGC: You promise that your work is completed “in remarkable, meticulous fashion.” How do you accomplish that?

DM: 90% of our work is Design-Build, the delivery method that keeps everyone under the same roof. Single-source responsibility means you work with a skilled team that brings innovative solutions and added value to every phase of the job.

SGC: THE CLIENTS ARE A RETIRED COUPLE AND HAVE LIVED IN THE HOME FOR 28 YEARS. THEY CAME TO YOU TO UPDATE AND RECONFIGURE THEIR KITCHEN AND LIVING/DINING ROOM AREAS AND PROVIDE ORGANIZATION, FUNCTIONALITY AS WELL BRIGHTENING THE ONCE CLOSED-IN GALLEY STYLE KITCHEN. TELL US MORE. RM: What started as a small kitchen cabinet refacing project turned into making the space unique to their forever home and customization to meet their needs. This included an open concept with major structural changes and additions to the garage ceiling and roof joists in order to support opening up a 15 foot wall to create an open concept from kitchen to dining and living room. The goal was to give the client an open concept kitchen providing an inviting and welcoming space as well a kitchen to entertain and cook in on a daily basis. As a newly retired couple with two dogs this project was about transforming their NOW home into their FOREVER home.

SGC: WHAT DOES THE NEW KITCHEN LOOK LIKE ON AN AVERAGE DAY? RM: Dave is the cook in the home and this kitchen was designed to ensure that there was maximized counter space and prep areas by adding the peninsula extension of the cabinets/countertops. As a lover of craft beer and specialty wines, Dave appreciated the added beverage cooler for separate storage space specifically for their favorite brands and flavors. The kitchen area is very important not only to the couple but also to their two dogs Bama and Crystal who enjoy relaxing on the cool newly tiled floors.

SGC: I LOVE THE COLOR ACCENTS. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN FEATURES? THE SEXTONS: We love that kitchen is now open to the family room. In addition, we love the pantry, pot drawers, and vertical storage above refrigerator cookie sheets.

RM: Some of my favorite features are the addition of the barn door that slides into a pocket behind the pantry. The oversized pantry allows for their larger appliances to be stored out of the way of other daily used items and includes roll-out drawers and tray dividers. The backsplash color was chosen by the homeowners and I recommended the wave and flat mixture which gave depth to the glass tiles we used on the backsplash. The hardwood-like tile flooring was a brand new product that just hit the market and they are trendsetters!
