Men Of Midtown DURING TIMES OF CHALLENGES WE FIND INSPIRATION AND HOPE. Working on this issue with Midtown businesses and leaders has shown us so many examples of that. It calls to mind how special this community is and continues to be. We thought there was no better time to talk to our friends at the Midtown Alliance and Kevin Green President & CEO, was insightful and up lifting. He saw the amazing spirit of Midtown emerge from the response of cheers and claps given to Health Care Workers and First Responders by Midtown residents that gained both national and international recognition. Now that is something to be proud of.

AROUND TOWN Designed by noted architect Philip Trammell Shutze, the property opened in 1928 and has held funerals for famous Atlantans including former mayors Ivan Allen Jr. and William B. Hartsfield, and writer Margaret Mitchell. Four acres including the chapel building and two adjacent gardens were purchased by Portman Holdings. A spokeswoman for Portman said any new development nearby will respect the historic building.

CULINARY MEDIA LEADERS UNITE RAISE $25K FOR FOOD SERVICE WORKERS Atlanta Eats TV, a local, Emmy-award winning television show and media company, plus a coalition of Atlanta leaders including companies, food bloggers, media personalities, and lifestyle influencers, came together to support the launch of a social media fundraiser to benefit the awe-inspiring and local nonprofit, Giving Kitchen (GK). This strong team of leaders raised $25,000 from hundreds of donors. Our initial goal was to raise $5,000, but we far surpassed that said Atlanta Eats Founder and Host, Steak Shapiro. "This fundraiser was Phase 1 of what will be an ongoing effort."

PIEDMONT PARK CONSERVANCY HONORS GEORGIA PACIFIC Every year, the Piedmont Park Conservancy select individuals or organizations to honor their outstanding work towards green space, the environment and/or public parks. This year, the Green Giant award was presented to Georgia-Pacific. “Georgia-Pacific is honored to be recognized by the Piedmont Park Conservancy with their Green Giant Award,“ said Curley Dossman, president of The Georgia-Pacific Foundation. “This is a special recognition for our company, especially given our history and ongoing commitment to supporting Atlanta’s parks and green spaces and the importance they contribute to a community’s well-being.”

MEN OF MIDTOWN COMMITMENT AND INSPIRATION

ACROSS THIS COUNTRY, AMERICA’S BIGGEST CITIES ARE NOT ONLY STRUGGLING WITH WHAT THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS WILL LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE BUT, HOW THEY EVOLVE. The ongoing, curious dialogue between where you are, where you have been, and where you are going is a common struggle in communities across our great country. Thankfully for all of us, Midtown’s growth, evolution, and urbanization is guided carefully by the Midtown Alliance and, thankfully for the legions of people who choose to live and work in Midtown, Kevin Green is right there, guiding the way forward!

While Kevin freely admits that he did have fun practicing law, ultimately he was looking for a way to turn his career into something that would make the world a better place and improve the environment. In 2000, Kevin made a “clean break” from law and went to work for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce as Vice President of Environmental Policy. While with the chamber Kevin worked to implement initiatives to improve water resource stewardship and helped to create The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District which continues to govern water supply, water quality, and wastewater issues for more than 5 million people in Metro Atlanta. Kevin also served as the executive director for the Clean Air Campaign, a Georgia non-profit working to improve air quality and reduce traffic, before accepting the position of executive director for the Midtown Alliance. 12

d r. b r o c k p u m p h r e y Dr. Brock Pumphrey, the owner of the Atlanta Center for Advanced Periodontics, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry in Midtown, with another practice in Roswell, believes the only way to reach your goals is to work hard and never get complacent. When he was in college and worked at a gym, he always heeded the quote that was hanging above the locker room that read “99 yards to go.” “That was their motto, and I always kept that in my mind,” said Dr. Pumphrey. “There’s always work to do, and just when you think you’re about to get a touchdown, life will pop up on you.” With his father being a periodontist and his grandfather being an orthodontist, Dr. Pumphrey said that he has been fortunate to be around dentistry all his life. As he got older, he realized it was a great profession and a wonderful way to serve the community. “I like the fact that periodontics is one of the leading professions in dentistry as far as the research and cutting-edge science go,” he said. “You also get to see patients over the course of their lifetime, which is a great pleasure. There are not a lot of surgery or specialty practices where you have that opportunity.” Dr. Pumphrey lives near Chastain Park with his wife Christina, two children, 7-year-old Brock Jr. and 5-year-old Pierce, and Reggie, their fox red Labrador retriever. Christina handles the marketing, back end financials, and the website for the practice, and actually designed and decorated the Midtown office. “Christina has a vision and a way of doing things that adds her own personal touch,” he said. “I’m blessed to have her there to help me with that, becomes what she does is a full-time job. I wouldn’t be as successful as I am without her.”

TUCKED INTO THE BACK CORNER OF AN EMPTY PARKING LOT IN ATLANTA’S EVER-CHANGING WESTSIDE IS A SMALL BREWERY WITH A GIANT PERSONALITY AND A HUGE HEART. Steady Hand Brewery, still a relative new comer to the Atlanta craft beer scene, is making a gigantic impact in our community by giving. For the brothers behind the brewery, the coin of the realm is beer and there is good intention being poured everywhere. Brain Sullivan, Steady Hand’s brewmaster, who’s roots are in the kitchen feels a deep connection to the culinary world here in Atlanta. Partnering with the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) and Les Dames d’Escoffier International- Atlanta Chapter to host a participating chef appreciation dinner for this year’s 10th Annual Shaken, Not Stirred Gala was an eye-opening experience for Brian. This little dinner shined light on a clever opportunity, rooted in partnership and community, to benefit everyone. “Our main goals with GOCA,” said Sullivan, “were to bring people together, highlight a cause, do some good for our community, and to drink some really good beer” After learning that GOCA had to cancel their annual fundraiser as a result of the global corona virus pandemic, Brian instinctively knew that he had to do more for his new group of friends! The brewery had already agreed to a Steady Hand ‘Brewers Package’ for a group of ten for the silent auction at this year’s gala but now; things were very different. “After listening to and hearing about the difficulties that

those women had faced, it was easy to see that we had to do more,” said Sullivan. What GOCA had provided to women throughout Georgia was incredible, Steady Hand instinctively knew what they had to do. “We make great beer,” said Sullivan, and making great beer for a great cause seemed like a natural thing to do!” Steady Hand Brewery, known for their delicious lagers, ales, and stouts is also an industry leader when it comes to the incredible artistic design of their cans and packaging! Brain said, “Steady Hand is going to be producing the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) (GOCA) beer, the first real charity beer in Atlanta; we are so excited about this partnership.” This new beer will be sold in cleverly designed cans as well as draft that will be served on tap at the brewery. The beer, which will probably be a “hoppy saison”, is in development now. Everyone involved with the project is delighted that GOCA’s logo is going to be included in the artwork. Steady Hand is also planning on releasing the beer for draft sales in local restaurants encouraging everyone everywhere to participate in a give-back program for this organization. “Everyone needs to try this beer, we are very excited about this partnership with GOCA.” “Hold Steady” is a motto for Steady Hand Brewery and in these uncertain times it is important for Brian to let everyone know he’s going to continue on making great beer and supporting others. The brewery is planning a series of responsibly distanced fundraising events benefitting the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance once our world gets a little more back to normal as well as being a big part of the GOCA upcoming virtual fundraiser. At the end of the day Brian’s dedication to the community and his continued support of GOCA throughout these most difficult times makes him a true hero in the eyes of everyone!
