Lavender Lemonade INGREDIENTS + 1/2 cup dried culinary lavender flowers + 1/2 cup agave + 1 cup lemon juice DIRECTIONS 1. Bring two cups of water to a boil and pour over lavender flowers, allow to steep for 20-25 minutes. 2. Strain liquid to remove lavender flowers. Pour liquid into a sauce pan and warm over low to medium heat. 3. Add in agave and stir. Allow to sit for 3-5 minutes until agave has completely dissolved. Cool for 20-25 minutes. 4. Pour liquid into pitcher along with lemon juice, then add 5 cups of water. 5. Modify flavor by adding more of the lavender/ agave mixture to increase sweetness or more water to decrease sweetness. 6. Serve in glass with ice. For extra pizazz, garnish with flowering lavender.

Add all ingredients to food processor or blender, excluding evoo. 2. As the added ingredients are processed slowly, add in evoo. The Danger of the “Someday” Promise By Marc C. Shaffer, CFP®, AIF®, EA Principal at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm “Procrastination is something best put off until tomorrow.” -Gerald Vaughan It is a fact in my life that as the years go on, I get busier, things get more complicated, and time shrinks. I have to be very strict with my time, going as far as adding ‘call this friend’ and ‘schedule a trip’ and ‘buy new running shoes’ reminders on my calendar. I don’t want to get so busy that I miss these things, but I also know the important things take time so I make it a point to schedule time so they happen.

I envy people who schedule these things for Someday. Where is that on the calendar? Why don’t I have a Someday?? I’m kidding, of course, and as regimented as I am at putting to-dos on the calendar, I have a Someday list too. I talk to people almost every day about their Someday lists. I want to do that but...someday when I'm rich...someday when I'm not busy...that will take too long right now… When it comes to your financial planning, the Someday list can be long. Sometimes people become so overwhelmed with finances they are paralyzed from the start. Write down what’s topping your financial Someday list: _________________________________________________ I’ve seen the result of the Someday Promise impact people in small ways, but I’ve also seen it cause great harm. Families who struggled when their loved one died without a Will, high earners forced to work additional years because they dragged their feet on budgeting, retirees without enough savings because they didn’t value time and compounding when they were younger. “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week.” -Anonymous You don't get more time tomorrow, or in the future. You only build up more life, more complications, and more potential for those Someday items to bite you harder than they would today. I know that taking that first step can be difficult, but you might find by doing so, it makes the entire task a little easier. Often, getting started can give you the momentum and energy to get done. Think about the item(s) you wrote above and answer: If not now, why? __________________________________________________________________________________________ If not now, when? _________________________________________________________________________________________ If I don’t start, who will I harm? ___________________________________________________________________________ When I work with clients who are sharing their goals with me, I try to uncover the why behind their goals, so that we can always relate their action items back to the reason. Uncovering your reason behind your to-dos is important to help the task feel more like an advantage rather than a nuisance. Why is/are the items above important? ___________________________________________________ It’s hard enough to get things we are dedicated to accomplished, but that doesn’t mean your financial Someday list isn’t important. If you cared enough to put it on a list, it must mean something to you. What is one thing you can do right now to get something accomplished?

I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED READING, BUT I WOULD NEVER HAVE CONSIDERED MYSELF AN AVID READER. After having my two kids, I found that reading became a way for me to unwind, expose myself to different cultures and take a break. In 2018 I was introduced to a corner of Instagram dubbed “Bookstagram.” After some pep talks from friends, I decided to start an account and see what happens. Now two years later, I’m at a place that I never envisioned when I posted my first very awkward picture of a stack of books. In 2019 I read 119 books, traveled to New York City for a book conference and have built genuine relationships

with authors, publishers and other bookstagrammers. My account has become a creative outlet where I try not to be too serious (which I hope is clear based on my Instagram handle— @DowntoGettheFictionOn) because let’s be real—I’m posting pictures of books! If you visit my page, you’ll find I tend to read a lot of contemporary fiction, thrillers and have even started to get a little sappy with contemporary romance. And I’m not afraid to share an unpopular opinion if a book doesn’t work for me. One thing I’ve learned is to try different genres. If you don’t typically love YA, maybe you’ve not found the right book, but don’t forget reading is supposed to be fun. All of the books I’m recommending, I’ve read and think are great additions to your summer reading lists.

YOUNG ADULT (YA) More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn (release date July 21, 2020) Luke co-hosts a podcast and is gifted musically but is in the shadow of his boisterous twin brother/co-host, Cullen, and his famous former punk rock father, Charles. Vada is a quirky music lover who works at the dive bar where the Greenly Twins record. Luke and Vada form a friendship that leaves them each secretly hoping for more. This is a charming story that’s bound to have you cheering for Luke and Vada. It’s te perfect book for music lovers, so get ready to add to your Spotify playlists.

NON-FICTION The Book of Rosy: A Mother's Story of Separation at the Border by Rosayra Pablo Cruz, Julie Schwietart Collazo The true story of two women entrenched in the fight at the U.S. border. Rosayra is a mother who braved the unrelenting and dangerous journey from Guatemala to keep her two sons alive. Instead of asylum, they are separated due to the zero-tolerance policy. Julie is a wife and mother in New York City who started a grassroots movement to help families separated at the border. This is an eye-opening story filled with grit and faith and is a wonderful reminder about the power we hold to stand up to injustices.

CONTEMPORARY FICTION Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore It’s 1982, and Oona is about to celebrate the new year by turning 19. Filled with excitement and love, she’s shocked when she wakes up in what should be 1983 as a 51-year-old living in 2015. Traveling through her life in two different ages, Oona experiences her life in a truly magical fashion. Easily one of my favorite books I’ve read in 2020, Oona Out of Order is a unique and captivating story that’s filled with depth and will leave you wanting more time with these characters.

“IN 2019 I READ 119 BOOKS, TRAVELED TO NEW YORK CITY FOR A BOOK CONFERENCE AND HAVE BUILT GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS WITH AUTHORS, PUBLISHERS AND OTHER BOOKSTAGRAMMERS.” LITERARY FICTION The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Twins, Desire and Stella, grew up inseparable. One evening they leave their small southern black community, and their lives change forever. Stella moves forward by passing as a white woman while constantly looking over her shoulder to outrun her past. Years later, Desire returns home, never forgetting the sister who moved on without her. This is a stunning, engrossing and unforgettable story about family, identity, and how the choices we make can shape future generations. An instant favorite that left me in awe and will stay with me for a long time!

HORROR The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix Patricia is an unfulfilled southern housewife in the 1990s whose excitement is her book club that has ditched classics in lieu of true crime. When a mysterious man moves across the street, Patricia strikes up an unlikely friendship with this dashing neighbor. However, as children go missing on the other side of town Patricia begins to question who he really is. This book is a page turner that’s both campy and gory with a touch of southern sass. If you loved 1990s horror movies, this is the book for you.

MYSTERY/THRILLER The Swap by Robyn Harding Freya is a charismatic beauty who leaves a sparkle on those around her. When Low and Jamie (who each have battled with feelings of isolation) meet Freya their lives suddenly begin to feel more fulfilled as they fall for her charms. Little do they know that a friendship with Freya will change their lives forever. Moody, provocative, and entertaining, this book hooked me from the first chapter. If you love a book with dark and flawed characters that will be hard to put down, you will love reading The Swap. CityLifestyle.com/JohnsonCounty

Think carefully about the proposed terms of a divorce settlement

The process of divorcing is often complex and difficult. There are a few things that make this even more challenging. Having numerous assets or having an ex who is not willing to work to come to mutually agreeable terms are two of these. Individuals might not want to think about having to battle things out in court, but it may be necessary if the settlement negotiations are not successful. Negotiating the terms of the divorce requires that both parties in the matter be willing to compromise. In most cases, neither party is going to get everything they want. Being able to think clearly about how various arrangements impact them

may help as they evaluate the potential options. It is usually best to think about what aspects of the end of the marriage they want to focus. For example, they might not care about what happens to the marital home, but they may want to keep their special art collection. In these cases, a strategy can be worked out that increases the chance of that happening. Determining what is truly important to them can also help them to save their energy for those matters. Parties should think about the long-term implications of the settlement. This includes taking a look at how the arrangements will affect their finances in the future. Assets that are costly to keep up might not be ideal when they are trying to survive solely on their own in-

come. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the possible settlement options to ensure they make informed decisions. GERMAN MARKET THAT DRAWS A CROWD

WERNERS TATION OF BEING THE BEST SAUSAGE IN TOWN. With no fillers, MSG or preservatives, Werner’s sausages feature hand-trimmed meat perfectly blended with seasonings in a natural casing prepared in-house by sausage masters with over 30 years of experience. Rachel Cochran is the general manager of Werner’s Specialty Foods in the heart of downtown Mission, Ks. “Werner’s was originally established in 1898,” Cochran says. “It was called Swanson’s and was located on Westport Road (where Cupini’s is now). It was originally a Swedish market, stocking traditional Swedish items like lutefisk and Swedish potato sausage. Werner Wohlert, who came to America in 1959 from Germany, worked for the Sawnsons and eventually bought the business in the early 1970s. Wohlert moved the business to Mission and re-branded—he transitioned the store into a German market that featured German imports and handmade sausages and renamed it Werner’s. Wohlert and his wife, Ursula, ran the store themselves for 25 years until 1995 when David Miller purchased the business. Miller saw a golden opportunity and expanded the sausage selection from Wohlert’s original four varieties of sausage to the current 20 varieties. Miller continues to stock German imported goods but has also expanded by carrying local products such as locally made sauerkraut and mustard. This year, Miller and his wife, Judy, will celebrate their 25th anniversary!” This old-fashioned family delicatessen with welcoming staff is the perfect place to get a made-to-order sandwich for lunch to-go or an easy dinner—find buns, condiments and sausages to grill at home. “You can get the classics like ham and cheese or oven roasted turkey, but we also make a signature Schnitzel sandwich—it’s our #1 seller. It’s a pork tenderloin that has been tenderized, breaded, fried and served on seedless rye bread with mayo, tomato, onion and Swiss cheese. These usually sell out every day! Other bestselling sandwiches include the corned beef, smoked turkey, liverwurst and our version of a Reuben, which is house-made corned beef served on rye with mayo, kraut, spicy mustard (not Thousand Island or Russian dressing) and Swiss cheese. We also stock a variety of chips, drinks and even a few sweet things for dessert to round out your lunch for less than $10. Our line is always quicker and shorter than other fast food eateries in Mission.” 22

1. Keep it Simple: When hosting an outdoor dinner party, it’s important to have a plan, but keep it simple. I like to make one or two dishes to serve to my guests, and I usually add a pre-made appetizer or dessert to decrease my time in the kitchen. Choose a couple of

OUR TOWN

To g e t h e r A p a r t : KANSAS CITY MUSICIANS JOIN FORCES WHILE SHELTERING IN PLACE ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY

MARCH 24, 2020. The city fell silent as stay-at-home orders swept across the Kansas City metro area. Restaurants closed, parks succumbed to police tape, and people everywhere looked at each other with suspicion, wondering if the unknown menace of COVID19 was lurking in their seemingly healthy lungs. For many, that shutdown meant lost wages for a short time. For the music community, the effects are wearing on longer. The restaurants and bars that hired them to bring in guests are struggling under capacity limits and depleted cash reserves. Times are bleak. But it’s also in times like this that creators thrive, lighting the dark times with hope and healing. At least, that’s the goal for David George, the singer/songwriter and driving force behind When We All Come Together, a song that he wrote and produced. As soon as the stay-at-home order was announced, George, known for his work with A Crooked Mile, and the Volker Brothers, as well as guests stints playing with John Fogerty, among others, started hatching an idea for an at-home musical collaboration to raise funds for the Midwest Music Foundation.

INQUISITION, ACCORDING TO MONTY PYTHON. No one expected a city-wide shutdown this year either. For bars and restaurants, this loss of income has been devastating. The Monarch Bar, located on the Country Club Plaza, was about to welcome their sister bar, Verdigris, to Park Place in Leawood when everything came to a screeching halt. Luckily, both bars were able to pivot to a to-go cocktail format in order to survive and keep their staff employed. So what do you do when you’re stuck at home instead of making the finest cocktails in the city? Mix a drink! Brock Schulte, bar manager of the Monarch, and Stephen Montez, general manager of Verdigris, have been kind enough to share the cocktails they have been mixing at home while they wait to wow their guests once more. And to keep it even simpler, they chose two different cocktails that showcase one outstanding spirit, The Real McCoy 12 Year Single Blended Premium Rum. Enjoy! Brock Schulte loves this iteration of the classic mojito, featured on the Monarch Bar’s Mojito Migration.
