BOISE AIRPORT GOES VIRTUAL Kids with autism have a new tool in their belt to help when traveling through Boise Airport.

Boise State University students collaborated with airport employees to create a real-life airport experience. The students, through BSU’s Games, Interactive Media and Mobile (GIMM) Lab WorkStudy program, were responsible for scripting, filming and editing the VR program. Users can simulate everything from checking luggage and passing through the security checkpoint to boarding an aircraft.

“We understand the airport has a lot of moving parts and can be a daunting experience for some children on the autism spectrum,” says Airport Director Rebecca Hupp. “We want to take the surprise element out of the equation for families traveling with children for the first time.”

GREAT GRANDMA ALTA NOVA’S CHESS PIE

A THANKSGIVING TRADITION FROM THE AMES FAMILY

MY GRANDMA ALTA NEAL WAS WELL-KNOWN FOR HER LOVE OF ENTERTAINING. The more people she could feed under her roof, the happier she was. She baked for weeks prior to every Thanksgiving.

reel cans on her glass-enclosed deck. The deck became a sort of holiday “treat room” and every kid’s dream! My brother and I would open each container to discover what was hidden inside. The film cans held pies of several varieties that changed from year to year. The only constant was Chess Pie. Grandma baked Great-Grandma Nova’s Chess Pie every Thanksgiving my whole life. It was a family favorite.

Great Grandma Alta’s recipe has been handed down for generations. I’m sure the Altas are smiling as I share it now. Happy Thanksgiving!

CHESS PIE Prep time: 30 minutes Baking time: 1 hour Preheat oven to 350 F.

INGREDIENTS + 1/2 cup butter + 1 cup sugar + 3 eggs, separated + 1/3 cup milk + 2 teaspoons vanilla + 3/4 cup chopped walnuts + 1 scant cup cooked raisins* + 1 pie crust

DIRECTIONS *To cook raisins, cover with water in saucepan.

Bring just to a boil, drain and cool.

Cream butter and sugar. Add 3 egg yolks.

Mix in milk and vanilla. Stir in nuts and cooled raisins. Pour into unbaked pie crust.

Bake at 350 F for 1 hour. Cool and refrigerate.

PART OF THE BEAUTY OF BEING AN OUTDOORS PERSON LIVING IN A FOUR-SEASON TOWN IS YOU’RE ALWAYS ENDING ONE SEASON AND PREPARING FOR THE NEXT, AND NOVEMBER IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THAT. You never really know what you’re going to get. You could be hiking or mountain biking in the Foothills in a T-shirt or carving the first powder turns of the ski season at Bogus Basin or another Idaho ski resort.

It’s ‘tween season when the weather can take wild swings from day to day, or by location. November temperatures may be pretty mild in the Treasure Valley weather bubble, but go up in elevation, and things are likely to get colder, wetter and less predictable.

November is a transitional time for me, as well as a continuation.

Hunting season starts for me in September, peaks in October, and then rolls through winter with waterfowl hunting. Fishing season is still open, too, and fall and winter are my favorite seasons to grab my fly rod and head to the Boise River in search of its elusive trout.

But it’s also time to take inventory of my outdoor gear, either cleaning it up after the sunny seasons are past, or getting my winter gear lined up for the coming months. Sometimes these things seem like chores, but there’s also a sense of satisfaction that I am keeping my equipment— more than I care to admit—in good working order. It treats me well, and to keep that going, I must do my part.

One thing I look forward to in November is cleaning and maintaining my mountain bike. It gets a lot of miles, and there are a lot of moving parts on a full-suspension mountain bike. Replacement parts can often be found at a discount, and bike shops are less busy with repairs. If you’re looking for a deal on bike parts, or even a new bike, it’s a good time to find them.

I also go through my fishing gear and see what needs to be replaced.

It gives me a good excuse to tie some flies, which I am notoriously slow to do. My friends tie them by the dozens, but I am lucky to produce a handful in an evening. Maybe that’s because I am daydreaming about what I might catch with them. I don’t know if I’ve ever saved money by tying my own flies, but it gives me the extra satisfaction of fooling a fish with a fly that I created.

I also reload rounds for my rifles so I have a decent supply of them.

It’s another opportunity to be involved with my favorite sports when I’m stuck indoors. But if it sounds like I am holed up inside until warmer weather, that’s definitely not the case.

As the trees change from gold, orange and crimson to stark bare branches, and the hint of morning frost turns to a glaze of ice, and Shafter Butte and the Owyhee mountains sport their first blankets of fresh snow, I get excited. I look forward to the Arctic blasts of winter storms, frigid morning air and afternoon sun that’s lost its heating element.

I giggle like a kid as the first flakes flutter from the sky and look forward to bulking up in winter layers and hiking old logging roads on snowshoes, or strapping on my snowboard and feeling that effortless glide down a mountain.

Living in a four-season place means every season that passes produces wistful memories and giddy anticipation about what comes next, and I want to enjoy it all.

My designs have included the 2009 World Winter Games Special Olympics opening ceremonies and multiple productions at the Morrison Center (as the master electrician) and at Stagecoach Theater (as the set and lighting designer).

In my spare time, I also direct, such as Stagecoach Theatre’s recent staging of Cahoots, and I’ve taught stage lighting, grip and electric classes at Boise State University.

FAVORITE PIECE OF ADVICE: Always be honest with yourself and to everyone else.

James J" im" Perkins He was the band, orchestra and drill team instructor at Borah High School when I was there. (He retired after 30 years with the school.)

Mr. Perkins cared about all the students, regardless of their musical ability. I don’t know that I was the best musician, but he always treated me like I was. If I wanted to learn something, he would find a piece of music or a recording to let me expand my musicianship.

In marching band, we always did music from Broadway musicals.

That started me on my career path for doing lighting for musicals, with more than 300 so far.

Jim NAME: James “Jim” Perkins BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION: Capital City Mulligan Band WHO ARE YOU? Before retirement, I spent 30 years as a music educator at Borah High School. Currently, I conduct the Capital City Mulligan Band, a community group made up of musicians who learned to play in high school, college or as an adult. As part of the New Horizons International Music Association, I lead the group to perform for audiences at places like the Idaho State Veterans Home and local senior centers. We also give free concerts in May as part of Boise Music Week (for which I’ve served as president three times).

FAVORITE PIECE OF ADVICE: You can’t be someone else or live their dream. You have to be yourself. So be sincere, friendly and help people.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

Marcellus Brown Marcellus is the director of bands at Boise State University.

He’s a musician who is well-known not only here in Idaho, but also for his skills in conducting dozens of all-state bands and other groups as well.

He was kind enough to nominate me for the Northwest Band Directors Hall of Fame in 2011. I played the French horn in his band (the Treasure Valley Concert Band) for 25 years. He’s probably my sole provider of all the good things that have happened.

Marcellus (along with Mark Dunkley​, ​Fred Hebert and the Dunkley Music staff) was instrumental in encouraging me to organize the Capital City Mulligan Band (originally known as Dunkley’s Mulligan Community Band). He’s one of the best.

NAME: Marcellus Brown BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION: Boise State University WHO ARE YOU? I’m the director of bands at Boise State University and conductor of the University Symphonic Winds and the Treasure Valley Concert Band. I teach instrumental conducting and serve as the Boise State University summer chamber music camp director. I’ve done extensive work as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States and have been a guest conductor and presenter at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.

I served a nine-year term as a Boise City Arts Commission member (and was president during the final two years of my tenure). I annually present the All-Star High School Honor Band and High School Band Clinic, which exposes the Treasure Valley’s developing instrumentalists and music educators to some of the best instrumental music educators and conductors in the nation.

I’m a member of the National Band Association and have served as president of the Northwest Division of the College Band Directors National Association. I’m also a member of the exclusive and prestigious American Bandmasters Association. Presently, I’m part of the selection panel for the National Band Association William D. Revelli Composition Contest.

FAVORITE PIECE OF ADVICE: Be honest, kind and work hard.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

Robert "Bob" Hill I met Bob when I first came to Boise 30 years ago. He was welcoming, and not just as a church pastor. (Hill served as the pastor of a Boise Presbyterian church before retiring.)

Bob dealt with difficult topics and issues masterfully. He asked members of the local African-American church to come to his church as part of an exchange. He had women speaking from the pulpit. At his church, there were people talking about gay rights. People didn’t always like it, but with Bob, they came away thinking how they could move forward in a positive sense and make the world around them a better place.

He talked with me about music, and I talked to him about anything but music. I was on stable ground with music but trying to make sense of everything else. It wasn’t necessarily a church thing,

but as we rollerbladed and played racquetball and drank coffee, I learned ways to help the students and colleagues and other people I met. And seeing my students be successful and watching them accomplish things, not just in music, but in the world, inspires me to do better.

HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR CAREER PATH? As a volunteer at a Rescue Mission, I saw the opportunity to use the gifts God gave me to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED PURSUING YOUR CAREER? Be sure that God has called you to this work, and take every opportunity, in all of life, to serve people.

Study to prepare for the work; be prepared to give and love at risky-high levels. Be prepared to earn less than your neighbors and friends and expect God to meet your needs.

WHAT CAN COMMUNITY MEMBERS DO TO HELP SUPPORT YOUR CAUSE? The Rescue Mission is always looking for community partners and volunteers. Churches, businesses and organizations can sponsor events, collect food and clothing, provide groups of volunteers for special projects, and of course, provide funding for our programs and services.
