Food, Glorious Food—and Drinks, of Course! ARE YOU HUNGRY, PITTSBURGH NORTH? We’re sure you will be when you read— or should we say devour—this issue, the most drool-worthy one of the year: the Foodie issue! We have included some of the most delicious bites and drinks Pittsburgh North has to offer, and we found more than enough material to fill these pages. With so many sensational local flavors and global cuisines in town, there is no way we could possibly cover them all, so this issue is just a taste of our emerging dining destinations. While we don’t like to play favorites, the Foodie issue is near and dear to our hearts. After all, food is not only nourishing (and delicious) but it also brings people together— whether it’s a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed lunch break with coworkers, a friend’s birthday party or even a casual weeknight meal with family. Food is often considered one of life’s great pleasures.

LUMBERJAXES TO OPEN NEW LOCATIONS IN MONROEVILLE AND CRANBERRY Pittsburgh’s premier ax-throwing company expands to accommodate demand. When Corey Deasy founded the first LumberjAxes location in Millvale, the concept was new to the area: an ax-throwing venue, where adults of all skill levels can try their hand at the cutting-edge entertainment phenomenon. Two years and countless bull's eyes later, the business has a second location in Mt. Lebanon (as well as a third in Phoenix) and is preparing to open two more in greater Pittsburgh this fall, one in Monroeville (10,000 square feet) and one in Cranberry (6,500 square feet). Both new venues are slated to open in September or October, and the Cranberry location will bring something new to the table: the first ax-throwing brewpub in Pittsburgh! “We noticed that folks were traveling pretty far to get to our first two venues,” says Deasy. “It was clear we needed to bring their favorite ax-throwing place closer to them. The people have spoken, and they want more axes!” AxeThrowingPgh.com

NEW CRANBERRY-AREA BREWPUB: DENTED KEG BREWING COMPANY The former McGinnis Sisters in the Adams Shoppes on Route 228 has been transformed into the Dented Keg Brewing Company. Opened by co-owners Matthew McCullough of Seven Fields and Corey Gibbons of Penn Hills, the 4,000-square-foot, 40-barrel brewery serves a rotating lineup of beers, house cider, regional wines and signature cocktails made with local spirits. McCullough’s brother, Derek, is the brewmaster. The 85-seat facility features a rustic industrial look and a small menu including appetizers, sandwiches and desserts (many of which are provided by the nearby Flour and Sugar Cakery). DentedKeg.com

Stepping into the Season KELLY CARNEY, OWNER OF EVA BRYN SHOETIQUE, DISCUSSES HER FABULOUS STORE AND FIRST YEAR IN BUSINESS ARTICLE MATT HACKE PHOTOGRAPHY TAMMY WILSON BLAZER

WHILE LIVING ABROAD IN SCOTLAND WITH HER FAMILY, GIBSONIA NATIVE KELLY CARNEY BECAME FRIENDS WITH KAREN FLETCHER, OWNER OF RUBY TUESDAY SHOES. "Karen taught me to appreciate trends and styles of shoes,” Kelly says. Inspired and mentored by Karen, after moving back to Pittsburgh, Kelly started to take classes at the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University with the plan of opening a shoe store. That plan finally came to fruition last September, when Kelly opened Eva Bryn Shoetique. Kelly’s boutique, named after her twin daughters, Eva and Bryn, carries a wide selection of shoes that hit many different interests and price points. “I sell comfortable and fashionable shoes,” Kelly says. “My main price point for shoes that I carry is between $80 and $250, and 95% of my shoes are between those prices.” Currently, the boutique offers women’s daytime, evening and special occasion shoes, from brands more unique to the area, such as All Black Footwear, Jeffrey Campbell, and Kelly’s one highend line, Lucy Choi of London. “Lucy Choi is the niece of famed footwear designer Jimmy Choo, and in fact, she actually works in the former space that he worked in,” Kelly says. “The shoes are a total statement piece. It’s the shoe where you can wear all black and let it speak for itself." Just in time for fall, Kelly’s store is stocked with the latest trends of the season, including platforms, Kelly Carney, owner of Eva Bryn Shoetique

“MY BUSINESS IS A PLACE WHERE YOU DON’T NEED A DRESSING ROOM TO TRY ANYTHING ON.”

“A platform is big for fall, and no matter what height you are, you should wear them,” she says. “I love when taller women wear platforms and embrace their height!" Aside from shoes, Kelly also carries five lines of handbags, several lines of jewelry and capes, wraps, blazers and jackets. “My business is a place where you don’t need a dressing room to try anything on,” she says. Having just celebrated the boutique’s one-year anniversary with a spectacular party, Kelly can’t believe a year has already gone by. "Before I opened a little over a year ago, I knew I really wanted to be somewhere where you could park your car and spend the afternoon going from shop to shop,” she says. “I also wanted to be able to complement the other amazing business here in Zelienople.” Kelly is quick to point out that the support of the other businesses in the area has been tremendous. “There are so many other women-owned businesses that have been around this town for a long time, and they have all been so supportive and great mentors,” she says. “So, my first year in business has been more than fantastic. Plus, women are always in a happy mood when they’re shopping for shoes!”

ARTICLE MATT HACKE | PHOTOGRAPHY SOERGEL ORCHARDS

FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, SOERGEL ORCHARDS HAS NOT ONLY BEEN A FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS, BUT ALSO A FAMILY-FUN DESTINATION

Family First

SINCE 1850, THE SOERGEL FAMILY HAS BEEN FARMING MORE THAN 450 ACRES OF LAND BETWEEN ALLEGHENY AND BUTLER COUNTIES. The history of the farm dates back seven generations, when John Conrad Soergel, a German immigrant, settled on the land that encompasses the massive operation the farm has come to be today. “He started by planting apple trees and selling the apples wholesale through the first half of the 20th century,” says Eric Voll, one of the general managers of the business and sixth-generation member of the Soergel family. By the 1970s, the market that stands today was established and since then has grown tenfold. “Several greenhouses were added in the 1980s to complement the market, as well as a Garden Center and Home Accents,” Eric says. “By the end of the '80s, a full-scale bakery, deli and gift barn and rack and cloth cider press were up and running.” Today, the operation includes an Arrowhead Wine Shop and Arsenal Cider House satellite locations, as well as Naturally Soergel’s, a natural food store.

22

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | October 2019

While there truly is something for every age at Soergels to do yearround, the most popular season for the farm is by far fall. “When we get into the fall season, we become more regionally known for our festival, which started in the 1970s and has become a family tradition for many,” Eric says. Beginning the second to last Saturday and Sunday of September and continuing every weekend through the end of October, Soergels Fall Festival is the perfect way to enjoy those brisk autumn mornings and comfortably warm afternoons. “From 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. on those days, we will have something for everyone,” Eric says. From tractor rides to pony rides and apple picking to pumpkin picking, getting into the spirit of the season will be a breeze. For young families, kids can roam free and enjoy the many activities the festival entails. “For younger kids, we have a whole bunch of carnival games, bounce houses and a corn stalk maze,” Eric says. Adults can expect to enjoy food and libations from an array of local partners Soergels works with. “Whether it’s coming out to enjoy our barbecue and listening to music with friends or picking out pumpkins to decorate for Halloween with your kids, you won’t be disappointed.” The longevity of Soergels is a testament to the family’s hard work and dedication to the community. “The fourth through sixth generations are still here working, including my grandma, aunt, uncle, parents, brother, sister, brother-in-law and cousins,” Eric says. “We all have kids now that run around too, so really the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh generations are all here.” Eric makes sure to mention that without the support of the community and the help of more than 200 staff members, the success of Soergels wouldn’t be possible. "It truly wouldn't be possible if it weren’t for the community and our amazing staff,” he says. “They are the reason why traditions like the Fall Festival are made possible each year.” Soergel Orchards 2573 Brandt School Road, Wexford 724.935.1743, Soergels.com

Today, Tom and Karen’s children, Tommy (president and general manager) and Jamie (VP of Finance), have followed in their parents’ footsteps—both dedicated and committed to the design excellence the company has been providing clients for more than 45 years.

The Office "When you look at the desk, you can see it is very architectural. The color of the iron bands going around the desk was specifically taken from the powder-coat color of the main staircase. That floating glass piece was an homage to the staircase too. Bringing in the colors and design elements from other areas, we achieved the goal of making the whole home flow and feel cohesive.”

“With the help and dedication of our long-standing design team, all of whom we consider family, our company has grown over the years to specialize not only in kitchen and bath projects, but other areas of the home, such as wet bars, offices/libraries, closets, outdoor kitchens and more,” Tommy says. One of the company’s most recent projects included a beautiful townhome in the Strip District. “For a former client of ours, we worked with her to design all three floors of her new home and make her vision come to life,” Tommy says. NORTH HILLS NATIVE AND RESTAURANT OWNER CHEF FIORE MOLETZ SHARES THE STORY BEHIND BURGH’ERS AND DELLA TERRA ARTICLE JASON SOLAK

EARLY

IN HIS LIFE, FIORE MOLETZ FOUND

HIMSELF

WORK-

ING IN SOME PITTSBURGH ITALIAN RESTAURANTS. It was not his intention at the time to eventually be a restaurant owner, but he had the opportunity to do some cooking and fell in love with it. As often is the case with Pittsburgh natives, Fiore made his way

out of Pittsburgh to places such as New York City and Kansas City, then eventually back home. In 2010 Fiore opened Burgh’ers. At the time, burger restaurants were not nearly as popular as they are now. Fiore recalls how during one of his visits to New York City he thought about how much he loved having a quality burger place on almost every corner. At this time, Pittsburgh was overrun with Italian restaurants, which would have naturally been his first choice. So he decided to do something different. Originally intended to open in Lawrenceville but unable to at the time, Burgh’ers found a home near Zelienople. Things worked out well, so well that the Lawrenceville location eventually opened in 2017, and the original just moved to a larger location earlier this year. “That town is the most amazing place on earth. I don't know how else to say it ... it's mind-blowing! The town has supported us from day one,” Fiore says. Fiore takes sourcing food, his community and employees seriously. He prides himself on having produced a model of restaurant that is wholesome, local, pays employees a livable wage, and is
