Strong enough I'VE HAD MANY PEOPLE TELL ME THAT I AM A STRONG WOMAN. Some days I agree with them. Other days, not so much. But I have discovered something about myself in the 52 years that I've been on this planet . . . I can be strong enough. As I write this, we are on day 14 of sheltering in place. You are reading this one month after I wrote it and I have no idea how our circumstances will be. No one

I pray for my family, friends and loved ones. I pray for our advertising partners as they are the businesses that make it possible for you to receive Fayette County Lifestyle and I am grateful for each of them. I pray for you, my readers, that you have peace and stay healthy during this time. INSIDE & OUT

YEARS AGO, AN ATLANTA ACCOUNTANT WHO HATED HER ACCOUNTING DEGREE DROVE WHERE OTHERS FEARED TO DRIVE. “Don’t go down there, sweetie,” people cautioned. “There’s nothing good south of the airport.” Luckily, Cari Campanile didn’t listen, and she stumbled upon Peachtree City. Originally from south Louisiana, Cari came to Mercer University in Macon for her MBA. Soon after Sept. 11, 2001, however, she took an accounting position in Atlanta. “I was miserable,” she said. “I needed the creative side of things.” Cari had grown up as an artistic kid who watched her father and mother build and sell houses. The smell of fresh paint and new wood still takes her back. She considered opening a patio furniture store in Destin, as a branch of the stores her parents owned in other beach towns. When that didn’t materialize, at 27, she opened a patio and 10

furniture store on Hwy. 74 in the nice town she had discovered—Peachtree City. During the past 15 years, and a move to Hwy. 54, Cari has ‘grown up’ with her customers and so has her son, Mason, 7. Unlike large furniture chains, Campanile’s has no commissioned sales. The staff works together. “We love what we do,” Cari said. “We live, sleep, eat and breathe other people’s houses.” Cari often creates plans customers can accomplish as their budget allows, learning whether they have kids, grandkids or pets. She loves color and the growing trend of jewel tones, but most of her customers prefer stylish, functional pieces such as the neutrals that dominate Campanile's showroom. “This isn’t an area where people live just for show,” she said. With many lines of indoor and outdoor furniture to fit any budget, Cari often orders pieces her customers have found online or in a magazine. “People still appreciate working with a person,” she said. “They trust me.” Cari credits customer loyalty and word of mouth with keeping Campanile’s going without which, “I don’t think we would have made it through,” she said. And, she admits, “I always hated that accounting degree, but I couldn’t run the store without it.”

FA BU L O U S SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON FIVE POWERFUL, LOVING AND DETERMINED WOMEN

CARL A CLOUD A GENTLE WITNESS

Carla, a.k.a., Mary, Abigail, Eve, and coming soon, Jezebel, is breathing new life into God’s Word through drama. “I believe it is the Holy Spirit bringing Biblical women to life through me. I am the vehicle for the message He wants me to tell.” Several years ago, Carla was asked to attend a young church member’s confirmation class as a sponsor when the inspiration came to her. “God told me to speak to this child as the woman who was compelled to pour perfume on Jesus’ feet and wipe them with her hair because she knew all she had been forgiven for. She knew Jesus was more than worthy of her most precious possession.” That was the start of A Gentle Witness. Carla weaves truth into her dramatic presentations from historical research. She portrays the Biblical women as if they were living today and are relaying personal accounts of their lives. When Carla comes into the room dressed in character, she wants those present to see “the Women”, not her. She is not Carla any more. . . she is that woman. Carla is available for presentations to churches, small groups or any organization where a potential experience may be desired. You can reach out to Carla at www.agentlewitness.com.

S T E P H A N I E PA R K E R CERTIFIED TOMATIS® PRACTITIONER

Stephanie’s decision to become a certified practitioner of the Tomatis® method was very personal. Her grandson was diagnosed on the Autism spectrum and she felt he needed this therapy. As there were no practitioners in Georgia, Stephanie (who holds a Master of Arts in English and is also a specialist in music), without hesitation, decided to undergo the training required to become certified herself. Tomatis® is a non-invasive listening therapy that stimulates brain connections by using bone conduction through music. Stephanie has seen remarkable results that are tracked by regular surveys during therapy. “In the past 2 years since I started administering the Tomatis® method, I have seen increased cognitive learning and responses, lowered anxiety levels, better eye contact and have even experienced nonverbal children speak their first words”, Stephanie said. “No two people have the same results.” She added, “What can be wrong with making your brain work better?” The Tomatis® method may be indicated for those on the Autism spectrum, with ADHD and/or other learning or developmental challenges. KRIST Y BIT TMAN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER WHY DID YOU BECOME AN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER? I joined the Marines to serve my country, I requested the air wing and they assigned me a job as an Air Traffic Controller. WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING A PILOT HAS EVER SAID TO YOU? We had bad weather at the airport and I told the pilot he should divert. He made an attempt anyway. He called me as he flew the missed approach and said: “my mommy said I never have to fly in weather this bad, I’m diverting.” WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW FEMALE CONTROLLER? That’s tough. Especially for a new female. I would advise her to gain as much knowledge as she could. Keep her head in the books and learn from experienced controllers, but always verify the information and know where to find the answers to your questions. Be willing to take advice. And, you have to have thick skin. HOW DID BEING A USA BOXER AND US MARINE SHAPE YOU? They taught me leadership, teamwork, self-discipline and mental toughness. They showed me how to survive. I learned the difference between being hurt and being injured. The Marines taught me how to depend on my comrades. Boxing taught me to depend on myself.

S H E R I WAY N I C K FOUNDER OF LIZARD THICKET Twenty years ago, Sheri Waynick, founder of Lizard Thicket, defeated breast cancer. Her battle was a short detour in a retail career that began when she was a young girl making 25 cents a day working behind the counter of her father’s clothing store in Alabama. Her first local store opened in Braelinn Village in 1993 and sold men’s and women’s clothing until 2002. That was when she made good on a promise she’d made to God while battling cancer that she would do something good with her life. She became the American Cancer Society senior income manager for an 11-county area. “I was extremely passionate,” she said. Four years later, exhausted from her efforts and missing retail, Sheri resigned her position and opened a Lizard Thicket in Kedron with women’s clothing that would appeal to mothers, daughters and grandmothers. Today, Lizard Thicket, named for a small community outside Hamilton, Alabama, where Sheri’s father was stationed with the Air Force, has grown to include five corporate-owned and 20 franchised boutiques. She credits God, her staff, which includes her daughters Jessica and Jackie, and her franchisees with the success her company has achieved. Aside from her business, Sheri is still doing good things with her life, including volunteering with MENTORise, a local group that offers free counseling to entrepreneurs. “Absolutely follow your heart and dreams, but don’t do it without doing your homework,” she advises. VA N E S S A F L E I S C H MAYOR OF PEACHTREE CITY

Mayor Vanessa Fleisch was elected in January 2014, as Peachtree City’s first female Mayor. In 2017, she was re-elected for her 2nd and last term. Her focus has been developing and maintaining infrastructure across the city. The innovative and cost-effective three-stage piano key, weir spillway at Lake Peachtree promises to protect life and property for decades to come. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED AS THE FIRST FEMALE MAYOR OF PTC? History has always been one of my favorite things to read about and so I understand that people find it interesting when someone is the first to do something. But I have never dwelled on it or tried to make it a focus of anything I have done. In the end, the goal should be to elect someone who is willing to devote the time and energy necessary to make a positive difference in their community. My focus has always been our wonderful city, and how to preserve our sense of community during challenging times. WHAT INSIGHTS WOULD YOU PROVIDE TO THE NEXT WOMAN SEEKING PUBLIC OFFICE? Whether a man or a woman it is important to focus on what is right even when you know you will receive opposition. Public service is about the people you serve and never about you. Vanessa Fleisch graduated from The American University with a degree in International Relations and a minor in Communications. She is a former producer for CNN. Mayor Fleisch and her family have been residents of Peachtree City since 1991.

Boys, on the other hand, will raise their hand no matter what.” Throughout Girl Scouts, girls get the chance to learn from troop members and showcase their skills. This builds confident students in the classroom and strong citizens in our community. Jennifer McGruder, Area Executive loves seeing girl scouts spreading love and wisdom. “Our programming is based on timetested methods and research-backed programming that help girls take the lead. For more than 100 years, the inclusive, all-female environment of a Girl Scout troop has created a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles and just be themselves.” Local troops have spent time at the Fayette Humane Society, made blankets for NICU babies and have planted pollinator gardens. Atlanta Zoo Nightcrawlers Program: Troop 15008, a 7th grade Cadette troop.

According to McGruder, Girl Scouts can lead their own adventures. “Girls can build robots and learn to code, become experts in hiking and rock climbing, plan and execute community service projects, build a successful business through the cookie program, and more!” Scouts work with the Southern Conservation Nature Trust, schools and churches. They participate in camping where they enjoy archery, horseback riding, and skills classes. You can also find them at the International Festival learning about other cultures. There are many opportunities for girls to earn badges and awards. The highest award being the Gold Award, a national award given to seniors and ambassadors. To prepare, a girl must complete a Journey, which is a long-range study of one topic. Topics include science, computer skills, environmental studies, engineering and the outdoors. This award is reserved for girls entering the 10th grade. She must display leadership while educating others on the need for the project and will devote 100+ hours to accomplishing the project. In some cases, Gold Award Winners will receive college scholarships and other financial awards. Past projects have included social justice, closing the gender gap in STEM and saving coral reefs. Girl Scouts are looking for volunteers in many areas; the robotics team, the pinewood derby, rowing, vehicle maintenance and more. Vassey is grateful for volunteers. “If you have a skill that you are willing to share with curious girls, we would love to meet you and plan

LOCAL BUSINESES ARE GETTING CREATIVE TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY. LET’S TAKE CARE OF WHAT’S LOCAL.

AT THE HEIGHT OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, LOCAL FAYETTE COUNTY BUSINESSES AND CITIZENS STEPPED UP TO HELP THEIR FELLOW FAYETTE COUNTIANS. This is our salute to those who do so much for so many, oftentimes at great personal risk. The first group to thank, of course, are local first responders and medical practitioners. Card My Yard of Peachtree City posted several very visible “Thank You’s”, with their “HEROS WORK HERE” signs in front of local hospitals and fire stations. We here at Fayette County Lifestyle can only second that opinion. Hear! Hear! All around the county, business owners have been striving to maintain their small businesses while showing their love and compassion for one

DR. IRENE OMOTOSO Are you looking for a truly caring physician? Dr. Irene Omotoso is a board-certified internal medicine doctor and founder and Medical Director of Waterfalls Medical Practice in Peachtree City. FAYETTE COUNTY MASK MAKERS Sherri Dickinson, of PTC, was watching the national news and saw a video on how to make masks for health care providers when it hit her. “I can do this! I know how to sew and I can help make masks!” she exclaimed. She told two friends of her idea and asked them for help spreading the word. They created a Facebook group, started sharing on social media and Fayette County Mask Makers began with a bang! In only their first 11 days from inception, they have over 200 Facebook group members and volunteers who are either sewing masks, taking materials in donations or running masks to local healthcare facilities. They have already distributed over 2,000 masks! When a community comes together, amazing things can happen. If you would like to join her group of volunteers, search for Fayette County Mask Makers on Facebook.

FAYETTE COUNTY LIFESTYLE QUARANTINE SURVIVAL KITS We also wanted to help out during these trying times and offered our Quarantine Survival Kits that included essential items and coupons from many of our local advertisers. Cookies from Highland Bakery and Kitchen, Coupons from Your Pie in PTC, a T-shirt from Tonya Jones Realtor.... one of the recipients said “I am very thankful there are still kind people in this world willing to make others smile during these trying times.” Not all of us are heroes but we’re all trying our best.

WOMEN CONNECTING

For Good IF YOU OWN A BUSINESS, IT IS NO SECRET THAT

NETWORKING IS GOOD FOR SUCCESS. Sallie Krawcheck, former president of the Global Wealth & Investment Management division of Bank of America said, “Networking is the No.1 unwritten rule of success in business.” The two groups we are featuring have embraced that belief and are taking things to the next level.

BWFC President, Jennifer Lunsford and Co-founder, Wendy Macguire

“I have grown professionally by making connections in the BWFC, but more importantly, I am blessed to be part of this organization to have the opportunity to give back to the women and children in our beautiful community.” - Jennifer Lunsford, President, BWFC, 2019-2020. The Business Women of Fayette and Coweta (BWFC) was birthed by two friends, Patti Kadkhodaian and Wendy Maguire, as a simple idea to raise money for a charity in the local community. Ten years later, the BWFC has risen as a strong and unified group of women-owned and women-led businesses across two counties. women as we are powerful local women who come together to learn how to be better leaders in both our community and our own business ventures." Sharlene Alexander, Co-Founder, ABWA - McIntosh Chapter. The American Business Women's Association (ABWA) was established in Kansas City in 1949 just after WWII had ended and during a time when it was considered socially unacceptable for women to pursue careers or even be a part of an association. Since then, the association has grown to a national presence of over 125 chapters, spanning more than 30 states. The McIntosh Chapter of the ABWA is a local chapter that was formed in July of 1982 by co-founders Judy Suitor and Sharlene Alexander with 25 original members. The mission is to learn together, support one another and fulfill the original mission of fostering women's education with scholarships. ABWA is committed to creating affordable, and
