INTERN

Rosie Chester | rosie.chester@lifestylepubs.com EDITORIAL COORDINATOR

If nothing else, the events over the last three months have likely forced all of us to be creative, on some level. Making music, writing poetry, painting, the way we walk down a grocery isle; these are just a few that come to mind. Prior to March 10th, my wife and I had a standing “date night”, every Thursday. Even though we have a wide variety of outdoor activities, restaurants, and live music options at arm’s length, we often found ourselves settling into the same routines. The usual standard was to grab dinner, then catch one of our favorite bands that may be passing through town. Needless to say, the date night routines have been drastically altered of late. If you ask me, playing all five albums of the Grateful Dead’s legendary May 8, 1977 show in Ithaca, New York, with a couple of local IPA’s, is my idea of romance. Subsequently, my wife doesn’t see it that way, so I’ve been forced to step outside of my comfort zone a little. Now we look forward to bike ride picnics, new hikes, and Zoom wine tastings with friends. Fortunately - I’ve found that nearly all of these can be done while listening to The Grateful Dead! Regardless if you are married, single, divorced, or swiping left, keeping things fresh and creative has proved to be a healthy ingredient for a happy life. While we all

CHELSEA ROSE ER Nurse ARTICLE AMELIA BROUGHTON Seemingly overnight, our nation has become a drastically different environment. Many of our lives are unrecognizable, and while some of us may have already worked from home, others have had their entire worlds turned upside down. In these times, those who were already a vital part of society, healthcare workers, have only become more important for the wellbeing of our communities. Meet local nurse Chelsea Rose. An unexpected trip to Guatemala would lead her to fall in love with nursing while doing medical pop-ups and working with a nonprofit organization named Saving Mothers. Before this trip, she’d been working in the kitchen at what was once Laudisio’s. When the slower winter season hit Boulder, the chef offered to set her up with a job at a bed and breakfast in Guatemala. Upon her return to Colorado, she decided to pursue a nursing degree and became a registered nurse this last September. Even after becoming a nurse at North Suburban Medical Center, Rose worked at Boulder restaurant’s Brasserie Ten Ten and Black Cat as the world as we know it changed. Her cardiac monitoring unit converted into the coronavirus unit, and her night shifts suddenly looked a whole lot different. With the unit being totally full and cases continuing to rise, every day is full of the unknown. Her and her coworkers do their best to take it day by day, learn on the fly, and adapt to new information. With so much intensity, Rose is taking a lot of time to do selfcare when she can and has an amazing stepson and husband who have been incredibly supportive. Her support systems have made the greatest difference during the overwhelm, and in turn, she’s been doing her best to reach out to those she knows to make sure the people she cares about feel supported too. Maintaining connections and continuing to reach out to her community has been a huge focus for her family and friends. Let’s all take a little note from Rose’s story...we are stronger together and need each other now more than ever.

JESSICA HELSON Pandemic of Love ARTICLE AMELIA BROUGHTON PandemicOfLove.com + 520+ Volunteers (and counting) + 65,000 Matches Between People/Families in Need & Patrons + Over $8.77 million in direct transactions since the start of this movement on March 14th With millions of people filling for unemployment, many have felt helpless under the weight of these unpredictable waters and have been in dire need of assistance during this global pandemic. Thankfully, we have seen waves of awe-inspiring collaboration and contribution towards those who have been deeply impacted by the novel coronavirus. Powerful movements and initiatives are sweeping the nation, reaching out to those in need and seeking patrons who are ready to lend a helping hand to whoever is asking. Our local community member, Jessica Helson, is one of many investing her time and energy in making a difference. After “quitting” social media because of its distracting persona, Helson returned to Instagram just before the pandemic hit to follow a select few accounts. Luckily, one of those accounts led her to Pandemic of Love, a grassroots, volunteer-led mutual aid organization that connects people in need with patrons who can help out. She’d witness this beautiful movement spark like wildfire, and jumped into action when the founder of this movement Shelly Tygielski, invited people to start the movement in their own communities. Someone who has always loved helping others and supporting the community, Helson jumped in and started Pandemic of Love Boulder. She was the perfect person to be a matchmaker for those in need with patrons who wanted to give. Whether you need enough money to buy groceries, pay for a prescription, or to run an important errand, Helson is doing her best to make those connections. A mother of four, she’s beautifully navigating the trials and tribulations of these times. She’s aware of our interconnectedness more than ever before and noticing the power of technology to create connections despite being distanced. Though we may be distanced now, we are still connected through technology and making a massive difference despite all odds. MEREDITH STEELE BRINGS JOY WITH HER ART ARTICLE AMELIA BROUGHTON PHOTOGRAPHY ASH TAYLOR

WITH MILLIONS OF IDEAS SWIRLING LIKE FRESHLY MIXED PAINT IN HER HEAD, MEREDITH STEELE PRIORITIZES JOY IN EVERYTHING SHE CREATES. A Denverbased mixed media artist, Steele is an explorer of new methods and eclectic materials, moved wholeheartedly by creation itself before anything else. Her approach is to commit to a series or collection until it feels fulfilled in its expression. The structure fosters focus and sharpens her skill with each stylistically similar painting. Ranging from a bliss-filled abstract series that was inspired by Hawaiian textures and colors, to fabricating captivating monochromatic feminine figures made with various recycled materials, Steele pours herself into the learning process that unfolds in the momentum of inspiration. Instead of being fixated on a certain style, she allows herself to be fluid, molded by her environment, led by what unfolds in the moment. She’s not interested in staying in one category of artistic expression. Steele’s work varies in its aesthetic, and those who see beyond the diversity notice the amount of presence she lends to each subject, texture, color, and setting. As someone who has always been deeply affected by her atmosphere and environment, Steele aims to illuminate the beauty in all things. She transforms space into dynamic pieces for all to enjoy, collaborating with clients to bring their wildest dreams into fruition. During these times, her focus has been to give back what she can. One to find the beauty in the smallest of details, she’s been sending out prints of her art to unsuspecting people or followers of her work. If you’re looking for a statement piece, something that captures the imagination, or are on the hunt for a mural or design expert, this multi-dimensional artist is sure to bring you joy in whatever it is your heart desires.

A Loo WITH A VIEW: HOW LOCAL DESIGNERS ARE USING DECORATIVE WALL COVERINGS TO BRING POWDER ROOM PROJECTS TO BOLD, BEAUTIFUL LIFE

66

Boulder Lifestyle | June 2020

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS, HBK PHOTOGRAPHY, GIBEON PHOTOGRAPHY | ART DIRECTION EDIE URE FOUR WALLS. Usually small. Heavily trafficked. Function first. Yet powder rooms are anything but mundane, especially when design experts with creative gusto in their hearts and bold visions on the brain are given the chance to work their magic on them. Powder rooms represent unique opportunities for design experimentation, and we talked to six local designers about how they’re using striking wall coverings and other artistic details to bring a variety of powder room projects to fruition.

VISIONS IN COLOR

EMILY TUCKER DESIGN Powder rooms represent exciting chances to create truly striking spaces for interior designer Emily Tucker, especially when it comes to colors, patterns and textures. It’s this willingness to go bold that links these two powder room projects which, albeit quite different in look and feel, are both an ode to the risk-taking opportunities that powder room design provides. While the watercolor powder room features wallpaper splashed with colors that are just subdued enough, the exotic floral powder room features a rich red wall covering that exudes sophistication.

PUSHING THE FUN ENVELOPE (OPPOSITE PAGE)

LUSI DESIGN

Why wouldn’t you say yes to a wallpaper featuring a frog in a bowler hat, a fanning otter, an imbibing badger, and other kooky critters for a powder room renovation? For principal interior designer Courtney Wells, working on this project was an exercise in creating an unexpected and unforgettable space meant to inspire smiles and laughter from all those who entered. A traditional-meets-southern-glam feel throughout the rest of the home meant that this space would be truly unique, fun, and entertaining—all achieved through this show-stopping wallpaper and complemented by light, balanced elements throughout. ALL ABOUT THE ENERGY

JOE MCGUIRE DESIGN

Owner Joe McGuire and fellow principal designer Matthew Tenzin are highly attuned to the energies of the spaces they create. When it comes to powder rooms in particular, they revel in the opportunity to play to the existing feel of the home while cranking up its theme and style. This balance of cohesive design and uninhibited creativity links their two powder room projects. While the contemporary lodge powder room simultaneously minimizes and glamorizes the rustic feel of the home with a subtle, textured wallpaper, the tiled powder room is a lively, energetic space featuring a geometric, bluehued tile wall and warm neutral details. FINDING BALANCE

ISTORIA INTERIOR DESIGN Designer and owner Stephanie Waddell believes that beautiful spaces are born out of beautiful contradictions—a principle put to practice in this powder room project. Seeking an earthy, natural and tactile vibe while still keeping the space fresh and modern, Stephanie achieved a striking wow factor by covering the walls in a striped pattern wallpaper based on an indigo textile and white penny tile with a delicate blue and bronze edge. Fun, antique details are also sprinkled throughout the space, including a Chinese rug and two vintage brass animal sculptures. CASUAL GLAMOUR

PROUD HOUSE STUDIO & COMPANY Achieving a sense of calm and comfort in a home means something a little different to everyone and, for principal designer Megan Daughtry and her all-woman team, bringing those visions to life is both a creative challenge and a rewarding endeavor. Their direction for this project in particular? To remodel the home in a denim and diamonds style— blending the classic and the casual with a healthy dose of sparkle. Through the expert eye of designer Laura Boyd Chapman, this was accomplished in the powder room using a brushed metallic wallpaper, whimsical mirror and sculptural sconces to complement the existing casual features. GET THE LOOK: LAID BACK LUXURY + Le Freak Wallpaper by Juju Wallpapers + Audrey Sconces by Cedar & Moss + Quitman Beveled Mirror by Bungalow Rose

Blending her passion for strengthening the mind-body connection and sharing that with as many people as she can is how Amana Yoga became. The downtown Boulder studio is host to dynamic and restorative yoga classes led by familiar faces in the community, but as of late, the studio has had to temporarily close due to the coronavirus epidemic, moving Alia to focus on building her online platform (AmanaYogaOnline.com). The site allows subscribers to live-stream high-quality meditations, vinyasa yoga classes and wellness courses from the comfort of their home. “Since the transition to being online full-time, we have still been able to work with the incredible Boulder practitioners and collaborate through online wellness lectures,” Alia says. This includes an immune-boosting and stress-relief practice through acupressure, a mealprep class led by a nutritionist, as well as courses with the Ayurvedic duo, Molly and Sierra, owners of the Boulder-based company Cultivate Balance. Alia has been able to keep yoga teachers and healers employed while broadcasting their extensive insight for healthy living right through the screen and into the community.

Previously, Rachel was a stylist immersed in the rushed pace of New York City’s fashion industry, but she was seeking a lifestyle more in alignment with her values: living in harmony with the environment through a zero-waste lifestyle. With the aid of meditation and guidance from spiritual teachers, she was introduced to tea, and from her very first time being served, she realized her most honest vocation. Rachel would go on to study at the tea center in Taiwan and then relocate to Boulder, a state well-steeped in wildness, and the place where she began hosting ceremonies and serving tea to the community.

Rachel says, “Sitting for tea allows people a sense of presence that we often struggle to find. My goal and purpose in this life is to help people discover their inner knowing that they are nature and invite them to be in rhythm with it.” The beauty of Boulder and the Wild West has led her to take her tea ceremonies outdoors. These include a guided silent hike, or even a short walk, to a natural landscape where the ritual unfolds. Sometimes it’s an aspen grove or a flowering field where guests are invited to take tea for about an hour. Think of this as a moving meditation; a tranquil space to watch Rachel brew the tea, pouring each bowl with practiced hands, then drinking in the aromatic beverage together. “When sitting for tea, we use all of the elements: water, fire, air, and earth. This allows us an opportunity to appreciate the simplicity of things, and within that, the complexity of all things; acknowledging how life itself moves and functions,” says Rachel. Her ceremonies conclude with an open dialogue for shared reflections. “These always come from a heart-centered place because we have held the space without any words being said,” Rachel says. Walking out of the woods is done in silence, giving each attendee the opportunity to maintain the mindful state created. During the Covid-19 crisis, Rachel is serving tea virtually to a global audience as a modality for healing and for stillness. A teaching that encourages us to awaken what is already within us. “When we are able to gather again, maybe we can maintain this slow and mindful energy, continuing this through our month, our year, our lives.”

She recommends a large leaf tea as they are easier to drink and allow you to watch the leaves unfold in your bowl. When purchasing tea, she loves the Colorado-based brand, Living Tea (LivingTea. net), offering high-quality teas sourced from China. Try their ‘Panacea’ or ‘Ruby Red.’ Global Tea Hut (GlobalTeaHut.org) is a Taiwanese organization that honors the ancient traditions of tea and employs local farmers. Rachel’s favorites teas are their ‘Elevation’ and ‘Sweet Dreams’—ideal for an evening sit.
