LANCE ALEXANDER IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL BOY NEXT DOOR. There’s a reason he plays a convincing good neighbor on television—it’s a role he’s been playing all of his life. Growing up in his West Chester neighborhood, he was known as a friendly, helpful and kind kid with a smile that lights up a room.

Now, that same smile is lighting up screens across America in Netflix’s comedy series, “Family Reunion.”

Lance’s dream of acting became a reality in 2017 when a series of encouraging contests led him to the chance to pick up an agent and pursue auditions for television work in Los Angeles. He pitched the idea to his parents, and they agreed to take a leap of faith.

After a couple of years of living apart and commuting between Ohio and California, his whole family—Mom, Angela; Dad, Ernest, and older sister Gabrielle—made the move to Hollywood.

“I saw people on TV and thought, ‘I can do that!’ It looked like a lot of fun, and it is,” Lance says. “I am grateful for my family’s support. They’ve made so many sacrifices: my sister, she moved schools, my dad transferred jobs to L.A., but we are all together now,” he adds.

The unique experience of chasing his dream as a 14-year-old is teaching Lance the difference between a house and a home: home is where your family is.

“I miss my house!” he exclaims. “Moving from our house to a townhouse apartment and downsizing was hard for all of us. But it is most important to have a home again, not just a house,” he says.

After a stint on “Raven’s Home” and some commercials, Lance landed the role of Elvis Maybury, a likeable teen neighbor to the McKellans, an urban family that makes a cross-country move to small-town Georgia.

The southern accent and antics may be exaggerated, but real-life Lance could have found himself in similar situations to Elvis any day of the week in our suburb: mowing lawns for cash, hanging out with friends at church or flirting with the new girl.

“Elvis is optimistic, fun-loving, loves God—you can find him at church every Sunday,” Lance explains. “We are very similar. Like him, I’m optimistic—with auditions, I am always hopeful that the next one will be my opportunity. And we are both entrepreneurs,” he adds with his winning smile.

“I SAW PEOPLE ON TV AND THOUGHT, ‘I CAN DO THAT!’”

Lance comes home to West Chester as often as his schedule allows.

“It is really nice being home. I’d like to come back more often,” he explains. “I have been able to stay in touch pretty well, but it’s hard with the three-hour time difference. It helps that I get to play games like Fortnite with Ohio friends. Anytime I get a message or hear from anyone, I respond right away,” says Lance.

This summer, he came bearing gifts: a $5,000 donation to Lakota’s Union Elementary, to help renovate the Innovation Hub. The star’s former school named the video recording room after him.

“I think it’s really cool that people can create their own ads or their own commercials,” Lance says. “It gives kids like me an opportunity. It gives them a first step.”

In September, Netflix announced that “Family Reunion” was renewed for a second season. That’s great news for Lance and his television family. Lance couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity.

“After you go out for 100 auditions, you may not get called for even half, or even a fourth. I try to stay optimistic and ready for the next one. I am grateful,” he says.

When asked what inspires them to give back, Jo explains, “Red and I grew up in very humble times, so when we were able to, we donated what we could. We felt like we were always interested in helping the kids in the area.”

They speak highly of their social and family network as a source of strength. “We have a wonderful family,” says Jo. “We have four daughters and ten grandchildren. We are all very close.”

This year’s Key Event, where they received their award, was especially impactful. “We have so much to be thankful for—that’s the way I felt when we were at the Key Event,” says Jo.

RiskSOURCE Clark-Theders RiskSource puts its mission of being guided by their moral compass into practice in the community. They’ve recently been raising money for West Chester Boys and Girls Club for technology-related creative expression, but they choose special causes and give back in many ways throughout the year.

We asked RiskSource Cares Committee President Kasey Young, and RiskSource Vice President Jean Mabry what inspires them to do great work. They say, “We believe that we are servant leaders in the community, and for us, it is much more than providing insurance. We’ve been giving back for over 11 years.”

“Even though we are a small group, we make a big impact: we’ve given away more than $50,000 and donated 4,000 hours of time in the community. Our leadership team allows each employee to give back 30 hours of paid time off at a registered nonprofit organization,” say members of the RiskSource team.

The team expresses gratitude, citing everything from “do-overs” to “the way we support each other” as sources of thankfulness. Common threads include gratitude for family, work, health and faith in God.

Brenda Yablonsky One of the most inspirational youth influencers in our community, Brenda Yablonsky is the Executive Director of EDGE Teen Centers. The two teen centers, which serve the two Lakota high schools, provide mentoring relationships, community service, social activities and much more.

Brenda first began her involvement by volunteering with and donating to the teen center, before becoming a board member.

“I fell in love with the organization and its mission to help teens become the best version of themselves,” she says.

Brenda gives the credit back to her staff. “They are the most authentic, genuine people I know…They choose to invest their lives in walking alongside teens during what I think is one of the most amazing, and at the same time, challenging seasons of life,” she says.

Brenda draws strength from her husband and her faith. She says, “Even when things don’t work out the way I expected, I have peace knowing I did what I thought I was meant to do at the time.”

Mae and Jun McKnight Local mom of five Shannon McKnight is the proud parent of three biological children and two daughters, Mae (8) and Jun (11), adopted from China. Both girls are ordinary children with an extraordinary challenge to overcome, as they both were born with limb differences.

The family moved to the West Chester area because they saw it as a “cultural and religious melting pot,” as they wanted diversity in the community in which their children grew up. “[In our previous town] people may say ‘Oh, they are handicapped.’ and I’m like ‘Really? Watch her run.’”

Both girls taught themselves how to swim, then thrived with the inclusive support of the Beckett Ridge Swim Club, including the encouraging coaches and parents of other swimmers. One family even researched ways to accommodate the girls’ limb differences to level the playing field when they competed with their peers, as to not have them disqualified for issues related to their disabilities.

“What’s inspirational to us is all of the people in the community who accepted our girls and love them for who they are in their hearts.

People in West Chester love and accept them,” Shannon says. She is also moved by her daughters’ strength as they navigate their differences.

What motivates the girls? “When I’m swimming and I come in last and see other people ahead of me, it pushes me to try even harder,” Jun says.

Mae simply answers, “Jesus.”

The family has overcome their immense challenges by saying “I’ll try,” not “I can’t,” and demystifying mental health by using a counselor.

“There’s no shame in our home. We ask ‘What are you dealing with today and how are we going to work through it?’” Shannon says. “They don’t get a choice about getting up and putting on their leg and walking to the bus stop. It makes me think ‘Stop making excuses—they don’t get to.”

Rev. Dr. Troy Sybrant Rev. Dr. Troy Sybrant is the leader of Compass Christian Church in Mason, the Secretary and Acting President of the Faith Alliance of West Chester/Liberty and the Vice President of the Caring Community Collaborative (C3), an organization that brings sectors of the community together to “raise awareness of community concerns, identify needs, and build networks.”

Through these roles Troy works to create conversations about mental health, substance abuse, senior needs, veteran needs and youth empowerment across various faiths and organizations in the community that typically get siloed.

Troy began investing himself in communities, working alongside a 98 percent working poor African American neighborhood to secure low-income housing. He obtained his masters in divinity and social work, then his doctorate in ministry. He helped HIV-positive people, tracked welfare reform at the state level and overcame the physical challenge of living with allergies and asthma that limited his social interactions as a young person.

He credits his “great cloud of witnesses” as his own source of inspiration and gratitude since he was born: family, friends, teachers, mentors and colleagues.

“The challenges of an individual life are more than any one person alone can bear; I draw strength from my family and friends. The challenges of an individual household are more than any one family can bear; I draw strength from neighbors and my congregation. The challenges our community and nation is facing are more than any single group can bear alone,” he says.

His partnerships with others in the Faith Alliance, C3 and the Poor People’s Campaign help him address those challenges.

Tony Harris returned home from a church trip to rebuild Haiti with stories that sparked interest from his wife Christin Harris and friend Shari Miller. Christin and Shari started sewing and selling shirts for toddlers with the goal of raising enough funds to sponsor one Haitian child to go to school. It was the foundation of Made to Love, a Hamilton boutique on a mission.

The trio of advocates didn’t choose their mission—it was more like the mission chose them.

“When we started it, we didn’t know our mission was jobs and education,” says Tony. “It has evolved.”

“Who knew this was going to lead to nine years?” Shari laughs, gesturing to photos of their toddler t-shirts.

The Made to Love store is modeled after a program led by Dr. Kelly Crowdis, a long-term missionary in Haiti.

“She would go buy stuff from artisans and resell it to those who were there after the earthquake to raise money to help sponsor kids to go to school. That spurred our interest in trying to find a way to get people education,” Tony explains.

Kelly now partners with the Made to Love team onsite in Haiti, a direct connection to the people they serve.

When all three of them went back to the country in 2012, they met a Haitian father who had lost his foot to an earthquake injury.

Tony, Christin and Shari sponsored his daughter to go to school and then raised funds to get him a job by paying for his training in jewelry artistry. The paper-bead jewelry made by the father was the first Haitian-made product they sold.

“People really responded to the direct connection,” Shari says.

“People wanted a way to help, but they didn’t know how.”

On visits to Haiti, Tony, Christin and Shari meet with village leaders to determine how to best help. They seek the most effective ways to support the Haitian economy, building a sustainable system.

“Our goal is to work our way out of Haiti needing us,” Tony shares.

“We keep our hands off of the school as much as possible. We want them to be the very best Haitian school that they can,” says Shari. “If we can buy what the students need in Haiti and stimulate the economy, we can make a much bigger impact.”

To date, Made to Love has extended its reach from helping one Haitian child to schooling 500 children. With donations and store income, they hire Haitian builders to expand the Garden of Eden School as needed, currently made up of four buildings and a playground, 36

serving grades one through eight. They employ and pay salaries for a full teaching staff and supply the school with necessary equipment like computers, solar panels, a router for internet service and more.

“The bulk of our money goes right back into our programs,” Tony explains. “As a volunteer nonprofit, there’s not a salary or payroll.”

The mission of Made to Love continues to evolve and grow.

“One of the things we are thinking about for the future is a trade program,” Christin says. “It is important to give the kids the opportunity to dream.”

Their focus is clear: to keep making steps to help, no matter what that looks like.
