The 42nd Annual Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards On Sept. 14, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored Arizona’s best and brightest broadcast talents during the 42nd Annual Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards. At the event, held at the Omni Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Montelucia, more than 90 Rocky Mountain Emmys were given in the categories of television excellence, news, production and creative communications.

The 19th Annual Scottsdale Firefighter Charities Dinner This event by the Scottsdale Firefighter Charities Association, held at Dominick's Steakhouse, raised $58,000 from sponsors and donors.

With just 700 guests and 447 crew members, there was an intimate feel, and the crew quickly learned my preferences, from knowing my preferred drink order when I lounged by the pool to greeting me by name around the ship.

THE FOOD On Regent cruises, forget everything you’ve ever heard about cruise ship food. Here, it’s like dining at a five-star restaurant each meal. There is an attention to detail and quality to the food that is unrivaled by other lines. There are plenty of options for food, from breakfast in bed to a breakfast buffet or coffee and food at the Coffee Connection, lunch at the pool deck restaurant or in a dining room, afternoon tea and snacks, and dinner at either the dining room or the specialty restaurants—Prime 7 (a steakhouse), Sette Mari at La Veranda (Italian fare) or Chartreuse (a French restaurant).

The dining room menu changes nightly, though it includes several options that are always on the menu including scallops, lobster, shrimp and various cuts of meat, including filet mignon.

“Regent is famous not only for its food but the high quality of ingredients that are used,” Anatoli says.

It’s easy to want to never leave.

When there are long days away from the ship—such as the day we spent 10 hours in Rome—we arrived back to musicians on the pier welcoming us with music, the crew lined up on a red carpet to welcome us back, and cold towels and champagne.

THE ITINERARY Of course, many choose a cruise as a way to see many ports in one trip. I spent most of my days on land exploring different ports, and with Regent, all except the voluntary VIP tours are included. You can choose from the selection of offered tours or choose to explore a destination on your own. I chose Regent’s tours, which included taking an express train from the port of Civitavecchia into Rome, Italy, and a tour of Ephesus, Turkey, that included luxury coach transportation and guided tours through various ruins and historic sites—as well as a buffet lunch at a hotel.

There were tours available for all interests, from a bike tour in Lucca, Italy, to cheese and wine tastings in Aix-en-Provence in France, and a cruise of the Valetta Harbor in Malta.

It was wonderful to be able to see so many destinations during one trip and to relax when back on board. With the gentle breezes, the blue sea and the luxury of everything at my fingertips, Regent Seven Seas made it a perfect vacation.

IVY’S FAMILY’S PIZZA RESTAURANT AND BRICK OVEN EAST COAST PIES ARE FAMOUS, LEGENDARY AND DESERVING OF THEIR OWN FOOD GROUP. True, the Grimaldi’s Pizzeria co-owners’ culinary contributions are well known. However, those aren’t the only ones making a difference.

Ivy Ciolli and her husband, Joseph, are a driving force in more than a dozen annual fundraising events each year, the majority of which benefit nonprofits like the Arizona Weimaraner Rescue, Healing Hearts, Lucky Dog Rescue and PACC911 (Phoenix Animal Care Coalition).

Ivy has served on a multitude of committees for no-kill rescues such as the Arizona Animal Welfare League. Her name is synonymous with the state’s philanthropic landscape. Do an online search of her name, and it takes a lot of scrolling to find something about Ivy that doesn’t include her impressive selfless resume.

And she prefers it that way. Almost. Actually, if she had her way, she’d fly even more under the radar.

“I don’t like the spotlight. I just like doing this and helping others wherever I can,” Ivy says with zero pretention and total humble sincerity.

Born and raised in Scottsdale, Ivy was born with a passion for philanthropic work. She says her family wasn’t financially equipped for the high-profile charity work she and her husband do today, but she did what she could and kept that focus through high school and while working fulltime to put herself through school at Arizona State University (ASU).

While she was a senior at ASU, an opportunity came in the form of an internship leading the philanthropic division of a local company.

She knew fundraising was the best way to support these efforts, and there, Ivy got her first real-world exposure to this facet of charity work. She loved it.

Ivy’s first solo foray into philanthropic fundraising came when she was 24. She sold raffle tickets for a Mercedes, and the $70,000 raised saved the ASCPA’s animal cruelty division. A year later, Ivy did a fundraiser for the Arizona Weimaraner Rescue.

She hasn’t stopped since.

“Everything leads into something else … I can’t say no,” she says.

Grimaldi’s hosts 12 events each year for animal rescues. The Ciollis also constantly provide support to countless other causes with gift cards and other donations.

Ivy is adamant about making sure animal organizations receive 100% of proceeds, and she works to see that costs like food and venues are donated. Owning a restaurant makes this easy. It’s a perk that facilitates her to continue her passion, which has also become Joseph’s.

“I thought, ‘I had a venue and ability to give 100% of proceeds to charity.’ … Our belief is that our business is a means to give to those without a voice and those without a choice. We have to be the voice for those who don’t have one,” Ivy says. “The whole purpose of our restaurant is about giving back.”

than she—and yearned to expand west so he could live full-time in Arizona, where he had other bars and restaurants.

They made the move to the Valley in 2002 and opened their first Arizona location in Old Town the following year. She helped her husband bring the family vibe Grimaldi’s is known for.

“We both love the energy of the restaurant and talking to people. It’s about making everyone feel warm and welcome. It’s the family feel we established in our restaurants,” she says.

Today, Grimaldi’s presence spans 11 states with 42 locations.

The exponential growth opened the philanthropic flood gates.

“When the restaurant really took off, my husband told me to do what I loved and follow my passion,” Ivy recalls.

Ivy diversified her philanthropic portfolio with Childhelp, which helps abused and neglected children worldwide. In 2020, she will chair the nonprofit’s annual Drive the Dream Gala for the second time. No less than 90% of every dollar of proceeds goes to Childhelp.

With the exception of grand galas like these, philanthropy is Ivy’s full-time job. She has never had a staff or committee for her animal causes and is the one-woman production behind the scenes.

Ivy gets emotional when talking about her son, Cole, 10, and daughter, Brooklyn, 7. Both are poised to follow in their mother’s charitable footsteps and regularly see first-hand how the lives of children and animals are transformed with selfless giving.

“They see where their mommy and daddy’s work goes and why we support these organizations. They both have kind and loving souls and want to help others,” Ivy says as her voice cracks and she tries to hold back tears. “They are a big part of what we do.”

Ivy may be a vital conduit between donors and recipients, but she is quick to credit those at the rescues and shelters who are directly exposed to cases that are tough and heart-wrenching and have no expectation of accolades.

“They do all the hard work. The easy part is the asking,” she says.

Ivy has no shortage of the success stories that drive her: A little girl who was thrown down a staircase by her abuser is now in a loving home, getting the childhood she deserves, and Ivy has before-and-after pictures of a horse that was emaciated and has since recovered and is living in a safe and happy environment.

“What keeps me going is seeing the difference that these organizations are making. … It puts the biggest smile on your face,” Ivy says.

ALMOST EVERY SINGLE MONDAY FOR THE PAST 11 YEARS, JIMMY WALKER—THE ICONIC LOCAL

BUSINESSMAN,

PHILANTHROPIST,

AND CEO AND FOUNDER OF CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT (CFN)—HAS KEPT THE SAME APPOINTMENT, WHICH JIMMY SAYS, “IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEETINGS OF THE DAY, MAYBE OF THE WEEK.” Jimmy heads to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP), a nonprofit located in Phoenix that is dedicated to feeding, clothing, housing and healing individuals and families within the community, many of them homeless.

In 2008, Jimmy contacted SVDP’s executive director, Steve Zabilski, sharing his idea of launching this weekly program for about 600 homeless men and women through Celebrity Fight Night.

Jimmy offered to speak every week, along with bringing a guest speaker with him with the understanding that they would together share inspirational words and messages to the homeless.

Jimmy is passionate about giving back and helping others.

“I’ve invited over 400 speakers who have spoken from our community who have made themselves available for the past 11 years,” Jimmy says.” We’ve had speakers from Muhammad Ali to housewives to firefighters to police officers to Larry Fitzgerald to brain surgeons to Governor Doug Ducey.

“I like to encourage the homeless to never give up. We have all made mistakes, we have all at times failed, we all have had moments of being discouraged or depressed when struggling with our problems. … I tell them we are all human.”

Some of Jimmy’s friends, such as Kevin Costner, say, “Jimmy is really a giver.” Billy Crystal mentions, “What you want to do with Jimmy is give him something, so he can do more. You always know that whatever you do for him, it’s for something good.” David Foster says, “Jimmy’s dedication to Celebrity Fight Night will never be equaled by anyone else in my lifetime for any other cause— period—for every life he has touched.”

In addition to the Never Give Up program, Jimmy is involved with St. Vincent de Paul in other ways.

Recently, CFN hosted an event in the ancient Colosseum in Rome when Andrea, Elton John and Steven Tyler sang. During the evening, Sophia Loren was honored.

CFN also gives to other charities, including its lead charity, The Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. In addition, 36 years ago, the Walker family created a Bicycles for Kids event, held each year in early December, for many underprivileged local children. During the holiday time, bicycles and food from St. Mary’s Food Bank are given to the kids—thus far more than 9,000 bicycles have been given at this annual Christmas party.

“There are many people who give back considerably more than myself,” Jimmy says.
