ANDREW BLOOM, HOUSING EXPERT CEO AND FOUNDER OF THE BVO LUXURY GROUP Keller WIlliams Arizona Realty, Luxury Division Voted #1 Scottsdale Real Estate Team 2018

Andrew Bloom is the CEO and co-Founder of BVO LUXURY GROUP at Keller Williams Arizona Realty. In 2014, on his 20th anniversary in Real Estate, Andrew earned International fame among global real estate leaders when he became the 312th agent inducted into the esteemed Circle of Legends. Over the course of his career, Andrew has personally sold over $1.5 billion in residential resale Real Estate and runs the top Real Estate Team in Maricopa County. BVO Luxury Group was voted Maricopa County’s #1 Real Estate Team of the year in 2018, the team has grown significantly to make 2019 the best year ever!

How HOT is the housing market this year? HOUSING UPDATE Q&A: Andrew Bloom talks Scottsdale Home Values The Spring selling season is always one of the best times to sell. Our population swells with snow birds who have been waiting on the sidelines to purchase. This year we have more demand coming from California buyers who have been aggressively purchasing well-priced homes. Experts agree that this is the best time since the peak of the 2006 housing bubble to sell a home. Sarah Mikhitarian, senior economist of real estate site Zillow.com, tells us it is a trend she is seeing all over the country. “In my 25 years selling Real Estate in Arizona I have never seen a better time to buy or sell,” he said. Q. Is it worth it to remodel a home we’ve owned for 20 years if we are thinking of selling in the near future? A. Homes selling for the highest price are those that are move-in ready. We are seeing many luxury investors come into our market and buy homes as-is and completely renovate them. The average price per square foot to completely renovate a home is approximately $50.00 and the average increase in property value is about $100.00 per square foot. Of course cosmetic updating of paint and carpet is much less expensive and does provide a great benefit to getting market value for older homes. Q. Where do I begin? I don’t have any idea what to do to my house, I don’t know who to call, and I don’t know what it will cost. A. Just call our team! We handle it all. For no cost we can get you a complete project analysis including the improvements that will bring you the best ROI! We have vendors for every project, big or small. Q. Do you recommend staging a home to sell? A. All homes must be staged. Often times the owners decor is enough. We recommend that you read “The 10 Best Kept Secrets For Selling Your Home” guide at https://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/design-101/10-best-keptsecrets-for-selling-your-home. Q. As the top real estate team in Scottsdale, what do you do differently to sell luxury homes? A. We have a global network of the top real estate agents World wide. We also work closely with Wealth Managers, Sports Agents, Corporate Relocation, Physicians, and Estate Attorneys. Our depth of referrals is very deep and allows us to expose our sellers to many qualified buyers. In addition our Omni-channel marketing approach creates exponential global exposure by repurposing over 35 pages a month of print collateral in a digital world.

ARIZONA ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE RESCUES PUPPY MILL DOGS The Arizona Animal Welfare League, in partnership with National Mill Dog Rescue, has taken in 18 puppy mill survivors who are now preparing for their first forever families with the help of AAWL’s behavioral and medical teams as well as a group of dedicated volunteers. Many of these dogs now at AAWL were trapped in cages barely larger than their bodies for years and with little to no medical care their entire lives, except to give birth to puppies that were then sold for thousands of dollars at puppy mill stores. PAGE TURNERS children, intrigue or tell an obscure tale, books allow an escape and let imaginations run wild. With our majestic landscape steeped in history and gorgeous weather, Arizona has inspired local authors of all genres to create stories that will have readers feeling at home even if the stories are out of this world.

A Trace of Deceit, Karen Odden Odden moved to Scottsdale sixteen years ago and fell in love with the huge inverted bowl of blue sky and the desert. She spent hours on hiking trails, often hashing out bits of plots with friends. Her first three novels are about young women in Victorian London who stumble onto mysteries—and often they involve their families and secrets or traumas from the past. In A TRACE OF DECEIT, Annabel Rowe, a talented painter, digs below the veneer of the London art world to discover the truth behind her brother’s brutal murder. A LADY IN THE SMOKE won the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award for best e-book fiction in 2017; and this year, A DANGEROUS DUET won for best Historical Fiction.

Desert Redemption, Betty Webb Webb is the author of the ten Scottsdale-set Lena Jones mysteries, notably; DESERT REDEMPTION and DESERT NOIR, plus the six GUNN ZOO mysteries based on her volunteer work at the Phoenix Zoo. Her best-selling DESERT WIVES began the investigation that ended with the real-life conviction of self-styled polygamy “prophet” Warren Jeffs, now serving 25-to-life. For 20 years Webb worked as a journalist, interviewing everyone from U.S. presidents and astronauts who walked on the moon, to polygamy runaways – all of which provided the ideas for the books that Publishers Weekly called “mysteries with a social conscience.” A nationally-syndicated literary critic whose reviews ran on the New York Times wire for more than 20 years, Webb currently reviews for Mystery Scene Magazine and is working on a third mystery series set in Paris. Dream On, Tom Hatten Mountainside Fitness Founder Tom Hatten continues to raise money for charity through the sales of his inspirational memoir DREAM ON. With 100% of the proceeds going to Make-A-Wish-Arizona and (MDA) Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hatten’s DREAM ON quickly moved up to the #1 Best Seller in biographies of Business Professionals and #1 Best Seller in Business Biographies and History on Amazon. The inspiring memoir chronicles the highs of starting a business to the crashing lows, including a horrific personal tragedy. Hatten’s memoir is available on Amazon, AmazonKindle and various locations of Mountainside Fitness, including 4 soon to be 5 locations in Scottsdale.

Animals in the Clouds, Rebecca Steward Steward is a mother of two and has been married for 28 years. ANIMALS IN THE CLOUDS is a book she wrote and illustrated 30 years ago but found it hard to publish, so she went about life, raising her kids and sharing her story with the kids at the preschool she operates here in the Valley. She decided in 2019 to move forward with publishing and here she is, an author. The book is based on the fluffy beautiful clouds we see often in Arizona - when we look up, what do we see in the clouds? Steward served as a portrait artist, donating portraits for five years to the NEGU foundation in California. You can see her work on My Passion Pencil Drawings By Becky Facebook Page. Steward has four other books she is working on writing and feels she is the epidemy of ‘never give up.’

Girls with Razor Hearts, Suzanne Young Young is the New York Times bestselling author of The Program series. Originally from Utica, New York, Young moved to Arizona to pursue her dream of not freezing to death. She is a novelist and an English teacher, and is also the author of GIRLS WITH SHARP STICKS, ALL IN PIECES, HOTEL FOR THE LOST, and several others novels for teens. As both an author and a teacher, she’s enjoyed connecting the two worlds. Her author events tend to be community events where she invites her students to participate; singing and acting out book scenes, which allows her to share their passions as well. Visit her online at AUTHORSUZANNEYOUNG.COM or follow her on Instagram @authorsuzanneyoung.

Mercy Rule, Tom Leveen Leveen was born, raised, and has lived in Scottsdale his entire life, where he and his wife and two children reside today. In addition to his nine novels published by Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, he co-founded the Scottsdale-based nonprofit Chyro Arts Venue and Is What It Is Theatre, an indie live theatre company that operated for more than a decade in metro Phoenix. Leveen’s novel HELLWORLD was a Bram Stoker Award finalist, and his novel SICK (based loosely on Camelback High School, from which he graduated) won both the Westchester and Grand Canyon Reader awards. His first job was delivering The Phoenix Gazette by bicycle.

Cook’s has a menu that focuses on simple preparations and uncomplicated dishes that honor the regions of Northern Italy, Greece, Spain and Provence. The restaurant’s culinary philosophy of magnifying the purity of fresh, seasonal ingredients is a celebration of its treasured legacy and it offers a captivating environment in every sense with stone fireplaces, al fresco dining and unique design elements. At the helm of the perfectly plated cuisine at T. Cook’s, is Executive Chef Lee Hillson, who has recently returned to this iconic dining destination. During Chef Lee’s first 12-year tenure in the early 2000s, the James Beard House-featured chef helped put T. Cook’s on the culinary map with his rustic Mediterranean cuisine and signature accoutrements like the orange marmalade, made from the resort’s on-site citrus grove, and what has now become the restaurant’s legendary pesto. A revival of some of the restaurant’s all-time menu favorites along with brand-new dishes that showcase Chef Lee’s straightforward sensibility and honest approach to cuisine have been added to the menu for winter, such as Lobster Bisque ($15); Roasted Squash Soup ($14); Chef Lee’s Pasta Carbonara with garlic cream, prosciutto,

AMERICANO! AT PHOENIX THEATRE COMPANY

THE FACES BEHIND THE PRODUCTION SHARE THIER STORIES

AMERICANO! IS BASED ON THE LIFE OF TONY VALDOVINOS, A GRADUATE OF CAMELBACK HIGH SCHOOL WHO WAS BROUGHT FROM MEXICO BY HIS PARENTS AT AGE TWO. This true story follows Tony who discovers his undocumented status when he tries to enlist in the Marines. With his lifelong dream of serving in the military vanishing, Tony must confront his family, his heritage, and a

deeply divided country. Americano! has the hefty goal of casting a human light on what it means to be a Dreamer.

The force behind Americano! is Jason Rose; serving as creator and producer of the musical. Four years in the making since his initial meeting with Artistic Director of Phoenix Theatre Company Michael Barnard, Rose notes that Americano! would not be what it is without incredible writers like Jonathan Rosenberg who, like Barnard, led the team, Carrie Rodriquez who wrote, sang and created all the music, and others like Arranger, Sergio Mendoza and Executive Producer Ken Davenport who brought his Tony Award Winning acumen to the production. Rose had never written a musical before and he harnessed the expertise of this talented team to make Americano! what it is. “This incredible original work is one of the most ambitious, timely, important and entertaining new musicals of 2020. We are all excited to see it hit the stage through February 23 at The Phoenix Theatre Company.” As the owner of a long-standing Scottsdale public relations firm, Rose has worked on some amazing projects, namely the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships. CANAL CONVERGENCE AND SMoCA FEATURE SQUIDSOUP

26

Scottsdale Lifestyle | February 2020

ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY SCOTTSDALE ARTS/CHARLES DARR

IN A CONTINUED QUEST TO BRING THE ARTS TO SCOTTSDALE, CANAL CONVERGENCE IS A FALL EVENT THAT HOSTS 10 DAYS OF ALL-AGES ACTIVITIES, HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS, TOURS, AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENTS AT THE SCOTTSDALE WATERFRONT. Cutting-edge public art, performances, and workshops, coupled with education on the featured artists of Canal Convergence in a series of artist talks at the Scottsdale Waterfront and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), means a well rounded experience for true art enthusiasts. Amongst the talent at the fall 2019 Canal Convergence was Squidsoup, a UK based group that creates immersive experiences in digitally augmented spaces. Their Standing Wave exhibit at the Canal consisted of 500 orbs, suspended above the canal in the form of a breaking wave. After Canal Convergence wrapped, Squidsoup created an exhibition called Murmuration that is currently viewable at SMoCA until March 2020. “Both pieces refer to imaginary or past forces, visualizing and representing them in different ways. Standing Wave also uses a single voice in each orb, creating vocal harmonies (and disharmonies) rather than the birds and tones of Murmuration,” Squidsoup commented. “Murmuration is the first-ever exhibition on the exterior of SMoCA. It is site-specific artwork that uses light and sound to create a dynamic audiovisual experience suspended around the exterior of the Museum. It contains over 700 orbs connected to networked data systems that create a responsive data swarm that swirls around the building. The artwork is inspired by, and named after, the organic formations a group of starlings create when flying through the air,” added Julie Ganas, curator of programming. Squidsoup started in 1997 with the original remit of trying to create work that lived up to the hype of ‘multimedia’. They sought to create immersive experiences and Murmuration is a successful culmination of those efforts. Squidsoup currently consists of 6 members, all with quite different backgrounds, spanning art, design, music and technical production.

CANAL CONVERGENCE (CONTINUED)

“MURMURATION IS UNIQUE BECAUSE IT IS AN ARTWORK THAT WAS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY AROUND THE ARCHITECTURE OF SMOCA. IT INITIALLY APPEARS AS LIGHTS SUSPENDED AROUND THE BUILDING, BUT IT IS IN FACT A TECHNOLOGICALLY COMPLEX PIECE. EACH ORB IS AN INDIVIDUAL AUTONOMOUS UNIT THAT CONSISTS OF A MICROPROCESSOR, WI-FI CONNECTIVITY, AN ACCELEROMETER, LEDS, The inspiration for Murmuration starts with forms and movement of flocks of starlings and other birds in flight, “We were asked to respond to the spaces around SMoCA. The SMoCA building itself is quite flowing and sinuous along the side, so we took that as a starting point. As with many of our works, we began thinking about imaginary energy waves, and how they would flow through the space; which led us to bird flight,” Squidsoup said. Jennifer McCabe, director and chief curator feels this is a full circle thank you to both Squidsoup and the community for 20 years of art and culture, “As SMoCA approached its 20th anniversary we looked back to important moments in our history. One such moment was the exhibition by Squidsoup in 2017 (Ocean of Light: Submergence) that was very popular. We approached Squidsoup to consider creating a work for the exterior of the museum in celebration of our anniversary. Just as the museum was a gift to the community on February 14, 1999 – the new work is also a gift to the community and a thank you for their support over the years.” 28

AND A SPEAKER, WHICH ARE PROGRAMMED TO RUN SYNCHRONOUSLY VIA A COMPUTER. THE ARTWORK APPEARS TO BE SIMPLE, BUT IS ACTUALLY QUITE COMPLEX AND TECHNICAL. IT HAS BECOME A MAJOR PART OF THE EXTERIOR OF SMoCA, WHICH IS QUITE A NEW IDEA FOR MUSEUMS.” - CURATOR OF PROGRAMMING JULIE GANAS

ARTIST’S PALETTE

Artist

DOMINIC BOURBEAU HOW DOES ONE GO FROM A CAREER IN THE TECHNICAL ARENA OF MEDICINE TO ONE AS A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST? For Dominic Bourbeau, who always had a passion for art, it was a seamless transition. Bourbeau will be showcasing his art at the Arizona Fine Art Expo in Scottsdale throughout February for the sixth year. His pull to the area stems from a well known artist who has quite the presence in the community; Frank Lloyd Wright. “He, some say, is the father of the mid-century modern idea and has been an inspiration and model for such designs. One can see that in much of the architecture and people here - there is a rooted appreciation for that style.” What started as a posting of a cat design online, spiraled into a massive following of Bourbeau’s own take on Mid-Century Modern style. He studied the sleek, clean lines of bold, earthy colors, and simple yet striking forms and developed a retro style inspired by the architecture and forms of the 1950s and 60s. “I chose Scottsdale as a forum to showcase my art because I wanted to find another place that was dramatically different from where I live (in Minnesota); where I could build on my technique with new inspirations and ideas. Scottsdale was a perfect setting for this. Calling Scottsdale my home for part of the year has enriched my art tremendously.” 34

arranged in any way to recreate a mini desert landscape exploding with color and beautiful shapes, and a bit of the artist’s added humor.” Bourbeau has many pieces that are special and customized for the client. “There was a Nativity piece I painted based on wooden figurines that reminded me of my childhood, I recreate it often because I loved that painting so much. A painting of Frank Sinatra’s house reflected onto a wine glass has always been a favorite because the idea came to me when visiting his home and I went to sip from my wine and noticed the amazing reflection of his house on my glass. Of course, my first drawing of a cat staring down on an unfazed mouse stands to be the foundation and model to all my other paintings to come because of its simple design and simple shapes that still tell a dramatic story.” Working with clients from all walks of life and diverse areas of the country, has assisted Bourbeau in expanding his artistic palette and has made for some amazing stories. “I begin my process by having the client choose their favorite color, since color is the Although Bourbeau graduated college with
