FATHER’S DAY IS ON JUNE 21ST. DO YOU HAVE ANY FATHER’S DAY TRADITIONS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? My dad and I used to play a round of golf every Father’s Day. Since his passing, I have carried on that tradition with my son who has taken a liking to the sport.

FATHER’S DAY IS ON JUNE 21ST. DO YOU HAVE ANY FATHER’S DAY TRADITIONS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

Our Father’s Day tradition is based on telling my kids that the best Father’s Day gift to me would be just getting together with the family. We all gather together each year to enjoy Kansas City barbecue and each other’s company (I do, however, expect real presents too.)

I look forward to Father’s Day when my dad comes into town and four generations of the Sandy family get together at the same time.

IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE THIS SUMMER AND ALL RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL WERE LIFTED, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? If I could go anywhere this summer, it would be to Italy. My wife, Becky, and I had a great trip to Sicily arranged for last April, but the recent circumstances caused it to be canceled.

IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE THIS SUMMER AND ALL RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL WERE LIFTED, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I would go out to dinner at a local restaurant with my family, and then to another restaurant with friends. Spending time with family and friends and supporting our local restaurants is something I’m looking forward to this summer!

exquisite dishes. My husband on the other hand is a master in the kitchen (and with the smoker), and I often joke with him that I think he missed his calling as a professional chef. He loves to make up new dishes, desserts, marinades and sauces and can make something amazing that is bursting with flavor out of what I would call “nothing to eat.” He doesn’t measure anything and knows how to add that perfect unusual ingredient that gives whatever he is creating that “wow” factor. It is a true gift. Not only is his food absolutely delicious, but the presentation is second to none. He decorates his dishes in various ways such as carving veggies to look like flowers or beautifully drizzled sauces (his art background comes in to play here), and many times I catch myself taking a photo of my plate before I eat it because it is a work of art. His newest obsession is gardening, and most days during his down time he can be found doting over his harvest. His talent with food is not wasted on my family, as we are all willing taste-testers and

I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED READING, BUT I WOULD NEVER HAVE CONSIDERED MYSELF AN AVID READER. After having my two kids, I found that reading became a way for me to unwind, expose myself to different cultures and take a break. In 2018 I was introduced to a corner of Instagram dubbed “Bookstagram.” After some pep talks from friends, I decided to start an account and see what happens. Now two years later, I’m at a place that I never envisioned when I posted my first very awkward picture of a stack of books. In 2019 I read 119 books, traveled to New York City for a book conference and have built genuine relationships with

authors, publishers and other bookstagrammers. My account has become a creative outlet where I try not to be too serious (which I hope is clear based on my Instagram handle— @DowntoGettheFictionOn) because let’s be real—I’m posting pictures of books! If you visit my page, you’ll find I tend to read a lot of contemporary fiction, thrillers and have even started to get a little sappy with contemporary romance. And I’m not afraid to share an unpopular opinion if a book doesn’t work for me. One thing I’ve learned is to try different genres. If you don’t typically love YA, maybe you’ve not found the right book, but don’t forget reading is supposed to be fun. All of the books I’m recommending, I’ve read and think are great additions to your summer reading lists.

YOUNG ADULT (YA) More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn (release date July 21, 2020) Luke co-hosts a podcast and is gifted musically but is in the shadow of his boisterous twin brother/co-host, Cullen, and his famous former punk rock father, Charles. Vada is a quirky music lover who works at the dive bar where the Greenly Twins record. Luke and Vada form a friendship that leaves them each secretly hoping for more. This is a charming story that’s bound to have you cheering for Luke and Vada. It’s te perfect book for music lovers, so get ready to add to your Spotify playlists.

NON-FICTION The Book of Rosy: A Mother's Story of Separation at the Border by Rosayra Pablo Cruz, Julie Schwietart Collazo The true story of two women entrenched in the fight at the U.S. border. Rosayra is a mother who braved the unrelenting and dangerous journey from Guatemala to keep her two sons alive. Instead of asylum, they are separated due to the zero-tolerance policy. Julie is a wife and mother in New York City who started a grassroots movement to help families separated at the border. This is an eye-opening story filled with grit and faith and is a wonderful reminder about the power we hold to stand up to injustices.

CONTEMPORARY FICTION Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore It’s 1982, and Oona is about to celebrate the new year by turning 19. Filled with excitement and love, she’s shocked when she wakes up in what should be 1983 as a 51-year-old living in 2015. Traveling through her life in two different ages, Oona experiences her life in a truly magical fashion. Easily one of my favorite books I’ve read in 2020, Oona Out of Order is a unique and captivating story that’s filled with depth and will leave you wanting more time with these characters.

LITERARY FICTION The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Twins, Desire and Stella, grew up inseparable. One evening they leave their small southern black community, and their lives change forever. Stella moves forward by passing as a white woman while constantly looking over her shoulder to outrun her past. Years later, Desire returns home, never forgetting the sister who moved on without her. This is a stunning, engrossing and unforgettable story about family, identity, and how the choices we make can shape future generations. An instant favorite that left me in awe and will stay with me for a long time!

HORROR The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix Patricia is an unfulfilled southern housewife in the 1990s whose excitement is her book club that has ditched classics in lieu of true crime. When a mysterious man moves across the street, Patricia strikes up an unlikely friendship with this dashing neighbor. However, as children go missing on the other side of town Patricia begins to question who he really is. This book is a page turner that’s both campy and gory with a touch of southern sass. If you loved 1990s horror movies, this is the book for you.

MYSTERY/THRILLER The Swap by Robyn Harding Freya is a charismatic beauty who leaves a sparkle on those around her. When Low and Jamie (who each have battled with feelings of isolation) meet Freya their lives suddenly begin to feel more fulfilled as they fall for her charms. Little do they know that a friendship with Freya will change their lives forever. Moody, provocative, and entertaining, this book hooked me from the first chapter. If you love a book with dark and flawed characters that will be hard to put down, you will love reading The Swap.

Think carefully about the proposed terms of a divorce settlement

The process of divorcing is often complex and difficult. There are a few things that make this even more challenging. Having numerous assets or having an ex who is not willing to work to come to mutually agreeable terms are two of these. Individuals might not want to think about having to battle things out in court, but it may be necessary if the settlement negotiations are not successful. Negotiating the terms of the divorce requires that both parties in the matter be willing to compromise. In most cases, neither party is going to get everything they want. Being able to think clearly about how various arrangements impact them

S

U

M M I

may help as they evaluate the potential options. It is usually best to think about what aspects of the end of the marriage they want to focus. For example, they might not care about what happens to the marital home, but they may want to keep their special art collection. In these cases, a strategy can be worked out that increases the chance of that happening. Determining what is truly important to them can also help them to save their energy for those matters. Parties should think about the long-term implications of the settlement. This includes taking a look at how the arrangements will affect their finances in the future. Assets that are costly to keep up might not be ideal when they are trying to survive solely on their own income. Therefore, it is important

to evaluate the possible settlement options to ensure they make informed decisions. let's add flavor FLAVOR SPICE SHOP AND SPECIALTY FOOD MARKET PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREA LATTERELL

WHETHER YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL CHEF OR SHOULD BE A CONTESTANT ON “THE WORST COOK IN AMERICA,” FLAVOR SPICE SHOP AND SPECIALTY FOOD MARKET IS FOR YOU. Flavor is a place where you can buy spices in any quantity, which is perfect for experimenting, building your own rubs, seasoning blends and marinades. This also helps prevent having an abundance of unused spices taking up space while they lose quality and flavor. In addition, Flavor focuses on supporting local small batch food artisans. You will find new and unique tastes such as burnt marshmallow hot sauce, bourbon vanilla peach preserves and habanero pickles. The local flair also includes a section dedicated solely to competition Kansas City barbecue sauces and rubs. More than just a marketplace, it doesn’t stop with selling Flavor, but also teaching it. Tucked away inside the shop is a beautiful kitchen, known as The Flavor Lab, that will be host to cooking classes and demonstrations later this summer. The Lab is also available for dinner parties and private events. Food is one of the few things in the world that bonds us all, and Flavor is a place where people can explore that together. What else can you find on the shelves? Fresh, locally grown organic herbs, in-kitchen herb gardens, local farm cheeses and a variety of cooking and grilling tools. Need a gift? How about a nice bottle of garlic or lemon infused Italian olive oil and a bag of parmesan and herb dipping seasoning and a handmade Italian dipping bowl? 20

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2020

Vanilla Extract at Home (Madagascar Vanilla Beans) Homemade vanilla extract only requires two ingredients: vanilla beans and liquor. Place 3-6 whole beans in a jar, cover with your spirit of choice, cover with lid, and let the infusion begin. After at least 12 weeks (the longer the better), use in your favorite recipe.

Turn Your Seasoning Blends into a Marinade (Adobo Lime Seasoning) Most rubs and seasonings can be transformed into a marinade. Mix with an oil and/or a balsamic vinegar to coat your favorite meat or veggies. We combined adobo lime seasoning with jalapeno olive oil to create a delicious chicken marinade.

It’s Not Just for Popcorn (Cheddar Cheese Powder) Our real cheddar cheese powder, “The Orange Stuff,” makes a delicious and velvety smooth sauce for casseroles or veggies. Try topping your tacos for something fun. Sprinkle on potatoes and other snacks. Want a kick? Add jalapeno or chipotle powder.

Bread Dipping (Italian Bread Dipping Seasoning) For an easy and beautiful appetizer, combine our parmesan Italian dipping seasoning with a good Italian extra virgin olive oil (evoo) and dunk away. Try it with Meyer lemon-infused evoo for a perfect drizzle for fresh or roasted veggies.

Quick Pickles (Curry Pickling Blend) Cool, briny pickles are one of summer’s simple pleasures. For quick pickles all you need is equal parts vinegar and water, salt and sugar to taste, and seasonings. Boil, cool and pour over your cucumbers. Pop in the fridge until cold. (Try our curry pickling blend.)

Flavor your Fruit (Chile Lime Fruit Seasoning) Bring the taste of real authentic Mexican fruit stands right to your own kitchen. Sprinkle your favorite melon, mango or coconut with chile lime fruit seasoning. Kick it up even more with a fruit-infused balsamic.

What Kind of Nut is that? (Whole Nutmeg and Whole Cardamom Pods) We carry several whole spices in the shop and often get asked, “what kind of nut is that?” Despite the name, they are not nuts, but rather seeds. Two of our favorites are whole nutmeg and green cardamom pods. Instead of sprinkling or shaking in nutmeg, grate it fresh. Whole green cardamom pods are essential to Indian cooking.

Pretty as a Pepper (Aleppo Chile Peppers) This shiny, sweet, mildly hot and smoky chile is worthy of a place in your spice cabinet. Swap the crushed red pepper in your recipes for this ruby red gem and find out why it’s been a Syrian and Lebanese staple for centuries. Spices, oils and vinegars are not just for cooking. Taylor Dumsky of The W created three fabulous cocktails using a variety of unique items from Flavor. The Strawberry & Sage Mojito (wine glass) features white rum, fresh lime juice, syrup made with Flavor’s honey ginger balsamic, soda water, California cane sugar and Wolf Creek Farms pineapple sage. Mediterranean Martini (coupe glass) includes J.Rieger gin infused with fresh basil, Dolin Blanc vermouth, Flavor’s 25 Star balsamic vinegar and artichoke & garlic olive oil, olive brine, Wolf Creek Farms oregano for garnish. Smoke Brewing Old Fashioned (rocks glass) features J.Reiger whiskey, Flavor’s hickory smoked olive oil, Smoke Brewing Co. 5-pepper blend barbecue sauce syrup, Angostura’s bitters, Flavor’s jalapeno lime balsamic vinegar, lemon peel (for garnish), and Wolf Creek Farms parsley. Would you like to learn how to make these? Classes coming soon! Complete Recipes are posted on our website www.wemakelifetastebetter.com. 22

What if you could permanently lose weight while tightening loose skin, smoothing cellulite & lifting the areas gravity has been unkind to?

Grilled Tuscan Chicken INGREDIENTS:

+ ¼ cup fresh lemon juice + 1 teaspoon of lemon zest + ¼ cup finely chopped fresh oregano + 3 cloves of garlic, minced + ½ tablespoons kosher salt + ½ teaspoons black pepper + ⅓ cup olive oil (Cervasi preferred) + 12 chicken legs, 8 thighs, or 6 chicken breast with skin and bones. + Lemon slices, optional for garnishing + Loaf of crusty bread METHOD: Whisk together lemon juice, lemon zest, oregano, garlic, 1/2 tablespoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and olive oil. Discard any excess fat from chicken, pat dry, and season with well salt and pepper. Grill chicken as you normally would to an internal temperature of 165F or until the juices run clear. If the chicken starts to burn, move it to a cooler part of the grill.

$59 INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL (A $427 Value) Our $59 introductory special is the most logical choice for anyone truly ready to start getting their health quickly back on track. Increased metabolism, increased energy, balanced hormones, reduced inflammation, weight loss and body contouring all coalesce.

Transfer the cooked chicken to bowl with lemon dressing and toss to coat, and then transfer to a large serving platter. Garnish with lemon slices and serve with the crusty bread. LAUREN’S TIPS: + If you aren’t able to grill, chicken can be roasted, skin sides up, in a 400°F oven. If skin isn’t browning enough, broil for the last couple of minutes. + For crispier skin, lay the chicken on a sheet pan (uncovered) and place it in the refrigerator overnight. This aids the skin drying for added crispiness.

Berry Crostata INGREDIENTS: + Refrigerated pie crust, softened and unrolled (Pillsbury recommended) FILLING: + 3-5 cups berries + 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon minute tapioca + 1/4 cup granulated sugar EGG WASH: + 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water METHOD: Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the berries in a large mixing bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch, minute tapioca and sugar. Pour mixture over the berries and toss to combine. Place a piece of parchment paper on a sheet pan and unroll the pie crust. Spoon the berry mixture over crust to within 2 inches of the edge. Fold edge of crust over filling, pleating crust as necessary. Be sure there are no cracks in the crust; use a little water on your finger to dab any cracks to seal them. In a small bowl, lightly beat egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush crust edge with egg mixture. Bake until filling is bubbling, and crust is golden brown, about 35-45 minutes. Carefully use the parchment paper to transfer the crostata to a wire rack and cool. Serve warm or at room temperature. LAUREN’S TIPS: + The minute tapioca and corn starch help the juices from running but don’t worry if some of the juices run out. It’s all delicious + The crostata can be baked up to 6 hours in advance. Serve warm or at room temperature + This is great served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream For more recipes and entertaining tips, follow @lauren_lane_culinarian and Lauren-Lane.com. OPEN HOUSE

LAKE W I N N E B AG O… NO LONGER THE BEST KEPT SECRET! “THERE IS NOTHING WE LIKE BETTER TO DO THAN TO SHOW AND SELL LAKE HOMES IN THE LEE’S SUMMIT AREA, AND WE HAVE MADE IT OUR OBJECTIVE TO INCLUDE LAKE WINNEBAGO IN THE PROPERTIES WE INTRODUCE TO CLIENTS.” The Renee Amey team is always enthusiastic and eager to talk to you about homes at the Lee’s Summit Lakes, and Lake Winnebago is no exception. “We used to say that Lake Winnebago was the ‘best kept secret’ in the Lake Communities as little marketing went out regarding this well-loved lake home resort neighborhood, but after 16 years in real estate, I do think we have managed to change that. Once you know about a good thing, you do want to share the news.” Marketed on www.LeesSummitLakeHomes.com, Lake Winnebago has its own unique characteristics and amenities. It’s important that prospective buyers get a good understanding for the culture, amenities, history and future developments for any one community. What is unique about Lake Winnebago? Of the five Lake Communities in Lee’s Summit, Lake Winnebago has the smallest population. The current population of approximately 550 households will be changing as the lake has recently gone through a lake expansion, increasing the lake to more than 400 acres and up to 1000 total households. Other lake communities in the Lee’s Summit area are 2000+ households. Lake Winnebago is its own city with a “small town” feel that sits right at the southern edge of Lee’s Summit, so the community enjoys all the nearby services. Winnebago is within Lee’s Summit schools, with the expansion area mostly Raymore schools. Lakefront and many ‘2nd Tier Residents’ enjoy the right to own their own dock. 40
