exercise is a place of peace for them, too. It's no secret that our springtime was littered with the word isolation. It was emotionally and physically taxing, especially for those of us who brought snacking to a whole new level. But somewhere in those days, I continuously reminded myself that there was a recent time in my life when I craved that feeling of being alone, yet together with nature. The feature story, A Man and His Mustangs on page 22, is ironic because our editorial team landed on this story long before any virus came to town. We, as Montanans, embrace the idea of getting outdoors and embarking on a journey that often times is very isolating. So it brings me great joy to share his story with you. I hope it reinvigorates your sense of wonder and encourages you to re-imagine the word isolation. It was well over a year ago that I attended a Mustang Matt clinic in Hamilton. I loaded up my wild mustang and went through a two-day clinic where Matt taught each participant how to hone their communication skills with horses, how to really

little fanfare. Missoula was no exception. The Missoula City Band formed in 1865, and today—155 years later—it keeps time with the leadership of Gary Gillett. Originally Director of the Bitterroot Community Band, Gary moved to Missoula in 1987 to head up Big Sky High School’s music department. “I loved teaching,” Gary said. “That was a great way to almost make a living,” he joked in his characteristic, slapstick style. Five years later, in 1993, Gary accepted an invitation to lead the city band. The previous directorship lasted almost fifty years, so his entrance brought a fresh face to the players and the program.
“We catch people by surprise when they’re walking by the park,” Gary said. “People bring their friends and family. The vast majority are folks who come year after year,” he added. Gary’s thoughtful crafting of each summer’s program has attracted a faithful following of musicians. “The band is open to all music makers,” he explained. “People who want to play just want to play. Give them an opportunity and watch out!” he said. Gary’s enthusiasm for good music and a good time comes through in the wide variety of numbers the band performs. “I make sure it’s a balanced program,” Gary said. “I choose music that appeals to the audience but is challenging for the

WHEN MIND & B O DY ALIGN
Missoula Valley Lifestyle | June 2020
JOSH NORDWICK PLAYED FOOTBALL. He also practiced meditation. But it wasn’t until several years post-high school that his worlds of strength training and mindfulness came together—a combination that moved him to found Missoula Movement and Mindset. “At first, there wasn’t a correlation between lifting weights and mindset,” Josh explained. “But as time went on, they blended together and bridged the gap.” Josh spent years traveling the northwestern United States, building a career out of personal training, yoga-based teaching, and wellness podcasts. He made his way back to Missoula and started Missoula Movement and Mindset in May of 2019. “We work off the four pillars of movement, mindset, nutrition, and accountability,” Josh said. “Through those pillars, we help people deal with life transitions.” The Missoula Movement and Mindset team works with clients who desire a customized approach to their health and wellness. “The really common factor is people who’ve tried everything else and those approaches haven’t worked,” Josh said. “They come to us wanting a different approach.” At Missoula Movement and Mindset, new clients complete an in-depth intake questionnaire and assessment that helps Josh and his team of coaches develop personalized plans. “We get really in depth with a person’s goals,” Josh said. “We help them find their intrinsic motivation.” Josh pointed out that unlike traditional gyms or fitness programs that tell a person what to do, the coaches at Missoula Movement and Mindset focus on an individual’s goals and how the coach can help a client achieve those goals, providing accountability check-ins

along the way. The spring of 2020 ushered in many societal changes—some temporary and some long-term. Josh said he made the decision to close the Missoula Movement and Mindset studio temporarily before COVID-19 regulations were placed, moving all classes and coaching to the studio’s app. While Missoula Movement and Mindset offers a hybrid approach to fitness (in-person classes and access to workouts through the app are available) the premise remains the same: build a plan based on needs and goals and be held accountable for working toward those goals.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) “People are busy. Whenever something is more efficient, it can be a game changer,” Josh explained. “Our model works because it’s based in commitment, investment, and relationship. You’ll build a relationship with someone who is invested in your health. And that grows commitment.” Josh implements the use of a steel mace, an ancient Hindu martial arts tool, to build strength and confidence with clients. “Something lights up when people use the mace,” Josh said. “They feel empowered physically and that leaks over into other areas of their lives. We’re able to increase movement intelligence with the mace, increasing consistency and willpower not only with their physical strength but with mental strength as well.” Membership rates at Missoula Movement and Mindset depend on need and level of accountability. Josh often offers 21-day transformation challenges to give potential clients a taste for the program and style. “It’s a different way. If you’ve tried the conventional approaches and haven’t been able to make long-term change, we’re here to help,” Josh said. “We are helping people make lifestyle transformations that are sustainable, long-term.”

THE LIST OF JOE BURNICH’S PROJECTS IS AS LONG AS A MISSOULA WINTER. He is former owner of WOW! Carpet Cleaning, the current owner of Big West Marketing, founder of a local entrepreneur group, author of a how-to book on marketing for service businesses, a devoted family man, and avid hiker. Joe was born in Missoula but his father took the family to Missouri for business when Joe was young. Family ties brought him back in 2009 when he returned with his wife and 10-month-old daughter so his grandmother would have family close by again. But that act of familial love came at a price. “I had absolutely nothing,” said Joe. “The economy was shaky and there was a lot of unemployment. A lot of people thought it was a risky move.” Unable to find a job sufficient enough to support his growing family, an old friend of Dad’s stepped in to offer a solution. Joe refers to Rick Kern as his mentor and a veteran entrepreneur. Rick has owned the Bicycle Hangar since 1980, but at one time he toyed with the idea of owning a carpet cleaning business. Ultimately deciding not to do this himself, Rick thought it would be a good opportunity for Joe. Rick did all the research and advised Joe on how to get started. Once Joe had the equipment and the training he needed he was in business and WOW! Carpet Cleaning was off and running. Eventually Joe had an idea to help market his company. He taught himself how to design a website and realized the importance of search engine optimization, aka SEO. The goal of SEO is to make your website appear highest on the list of results returned by a search engine in order to maximize the number of visitors to your site. 30
