KAINOA SPENSER’S AMAZING JOURNEY TO A HEALTHY MIND AND BODY

TEAM USA TAP DANCER ZACHARY KELLEY

ANDREW BLOOM REALTOR®

A TRUE SUCESS STORY The BVO Luxury Group is Scottsdale’s Top Producing Real Estate team in both sales volume and transaction count. Why is this so important if you are a buyer or a seller? Knowledge, experience, and relationships simply beget more business. Andrew Bloom is the founder and CEO of the BVO Luxury Group. In 2014, on his 20th anniversary in real estate, Andrew earned international fame among global real estate leaders when he became the 312th agent inducted into the Circle of Legends. Now having personally sold over $1.5 billion in residential resale, Andrew’s vast network in the community has positioned him to lead the team’s growth in corporate relocation and international referrals. Running Arizona’s Top Real Estate team was never the original plan. Andrew’s humble beginnings in Los Angeles where at the age of 11 he was removed from his home by California Social Services when his parents could no longer legally care for him. His mother suffered from depression and his father spent time in and out of mental hospitals with multiple diagnoses. This early intervention motivated him to earn his bachelor’s in Social Work at ASU and work in low-income housing projects as a client advocate. He learned the importance of protecting his clients as he advocated for better housing conditions. Andrew and his wife Babs have been married nearly 30 years and have raised their 4 children in their family home, which is host to numerous charitable events annually and affectionately known as “Casa de Bloom”. The main event is the annual Super Bowl Party benefiting Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Congratulations to Andrew and the entire BVO Luxury Group on this esteemed acknowledgment.

ConcoursInTheHills The 100% charity show is owned by Scuderia Southwest, who are also organizers of the monthly Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering which is commonly called Cars & Coffee. The show was started by Peter Volny, a life-long car aficionado. While there were many car shows across the valley of the sun, they were all held in parking lots where the cars were close together and it was difficult, if not impossible, to prevent non-show cars from having access. It is now the largest car show of its type in Arizona drawing entries from all over the state and as far away as California, Nevada and Colorado. Volny attributes the success to the venue, which is on the gently rolling hills of a park surrounding a lake with America’s tallest fountain and a backdrop of rugged mountain peaks. For

K a i n oa S p e n s e r K n ows ‘ I t ’s A b o u t the Climb’ 1

For those who are unaware, please share your miraculous journey

with them. A few years ago I was a Sophomore in college at Seton Hall

University in New Jersey. Toward the end of the school year in May, I was enjoying the usual end of year celebration with my fraternity and focusing on my finals and involvement in student government. However I became very ill and what went from flu like symptoms led to not being able to hold a pen to write during a test, as well as fainting. My fraternity brothers were immensely helpful and took on the task of packing my room and getting me to the airport to travel home for summer. By the time I got to my family, I was in a wheelchair with dangerously low blood pressure and heart rate and had pneumonia. I don’t have a memory of the events after that day. I’ve been told that all of my internal organs were failing and I was placed in a medically induced coma. I later learned my fate --I ingested strep in New Jersey, which got into my blood and lungs and sat in an internal pocket, later mutating into flesh eating bacteria. Inside my left knee was where the virus started. Necrotizing fasciitis set in on one of my legs, and I endured over 20 surgeries. Doctors gave me a less than 1 percent chance of survival.

2

It is incredible that you’re alive. What happened as you began to

heal and saw you did have a second chance? I am a quadruple amputee, as amputation was the only option.

I lost track of surroundings and happenings and had to put faith in my family and caregivers to give me strength. I was in hospitals for four months after intensive care. I needed to learn to eat and swallow and luckily still had my brain function. It’s funny, my brother was in my hospital room and I was teasing him on my letter board so everyone was relieved that if I could mess with him, my brain was ok. I began outpatient therapy at St. Joe’s in Phoenix which was amazing, as many facilities denied me due to my ‘being too sick.’ I went through the program rather quickly and am eternally grateful that they opened their doors to me. 20

After that night I started getting calls from local studios in the Phoenix area to work for them and was regularly asked to teach and choreograph. This was not a part of my plan at all, yet it felt exactly like what I needed to be doing. This turned

DANCER ZACHARY KELLEY

(CON TI N U ED)

“I love that tap dance is an unmastered art form. No matter how good you are, there will always be something to work on and get better at. To me, its a challenge, and I accept it everyday. I also see myself as an athlete, and I love how it keeps me physically and mentally strong.” Kelley has lofty goals for 2020. He will be appearing at small dance conventions, judging competitions, and teaching classes with some very talented dancers. He is currently looking for largescale conventions to be a part of as well, a goal he has had since high school. “I currently have been working on an international project for over a year now. I will be able to showcase this in 2020 and share what I have been working so hard on. Keep your eyes pealed, I plan on shaking things up in the dance community this year.”

MOVE ON THE DALEY ARTICLE STACI HAUK

PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS PHOTOGRAPHY

MEGAN DALEY, OF MOVE ON THE DALEY HAS AN IMPORTANT GOAL WHEN MEETING A NEW CLIENT; TO EMPOWER AND INSPIRE, TO GET STRONGER, STAY ACTIVE, AND STAY OUT OF THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE. “Everyone wants to stay active and live a long and healthy life, right? And we all know that exercise is an important part of that. Move more, feel better. Life gets in the way. A lot. Whether it is an injury that prompted you to come in or you just want to be proactive, Move On The Daley helps you find your “why” to help you stay focused, gives you the tools and knowledge to stay with it even through and after any injury, and together, we develop a plan to get you stronger and more Strength

active for life. It is Physical Therapy - Fitness - Wellness: Redefined,” Daley explained.

Daley has always had a strong passion for helping people find their strength through physical rehabilitation. Much of her motivation comes from experience and wanting to see others achieve what she has. “I have had multiple knee surgeries, starting as early as 5th grade, and ending with a cartilage graft during college. Thankfully, my stubbornness served me when I did not listen to a single doctor that told me to rest, quit sports, and never do heavy lifting or high impact activity. Fast forward to now and, between keeping up my strength and the mentality I have through my training both professionally and personally, I am stronger and more resilient than ever. I want to help as many people as possible to get stronger, avoid injury, and not have to take time away from the things they enjoy.” Originally from South Carolina, Daley came to the Phoenix area to get her doctorate in physical therapy and fell in love with the Scottsdale area. After graduating, she worked in corporate healthcare and began to feel frustrated with the process. When Daley’s father was diagnosed with lung cancer, an intensified irrita-

tion with the medical care system surfaced and she questioned how she could help others to make a bigger impact, and enjoy themselves more before it was too late. Move on the Daley came to fruition and Daley now gets to see her patients get back to things like hiking, playing with their kids, traveling and going to their gym, which is her greatest joy. “My goal is to change their life; allowing them to take care of the house, play with the kids, stay active, cook dinner, keep hiking, go to happy hour, lift luggage on vacation - all without restriction. And my goal is to help them continue doing so for as long as they choose without hindrance from their physical bodies.” DALEY’S WORKOUT TIPS: + STRENGTH - What’s the most important thing we can do that will set us up for success NOW & in the future? Frequently lifting heavy things. The stronger & fitter you are, the easier life becomes. + HIGH INTENSITY - You have to get your heart rate up regularly to make sustainable changes. FINANCIAL BUZZ CEO AND PRESIDENT OF FINEMARK BANK DAVID HIGHMARK DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ATHLETE’S FINANCIAL DESIONMAKING

Athletes and their Financial Health

ARTICLE STACI HAUK

PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS PHOTOGRAPHY WITH OVER 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE PARTNERING WITH ATHLETES TO ASSIST WITH THEIR FINANCIAL GOALS, DAVID HIGHMARK AND HIS TEAM AT FINEMARK BANK UNDERSTAND THE HABITS, CHALLENGES AND PRESSURES THAT FINANCES PLAY IN THE LIVES OF ATHLETES. “I was a professional baseball player and have been around athletes all my life. The typical athlete has a difficult time saying no to family and friends. Consequently they end up too often supporting failed ventures and losing money,” Highmark said. One of our important roles Highmark takes on when partnering with an athlete, is reviewing investment opportunities that frequently are presented to him or her. As a banker/lender for 40 yrs, he has a keen sense of what will fail and succeed. He is key in evaluating the investments and of equal importance, be the “ bad guy” in communicating the rejection to the those requesting new capital, “This helps the athlete preserve their relationship with a friend, family member.” FOUR WAYS FINEMARK BANK ASSISTS ITS ATHLETES

INVESTMENTS: We treat these athletes like they are 60 years old and nearing retirement. We always assume that their current contract is their last contract and they will no longer remotely make the significant income when the contract expires. Consequently like any worker nearing retirement, we need to structure an investment portfolio that is significantly more conservative than the typical 30 year old. They cannot afford to take big losses. We begin crafting a portfolio that will create a stream of income for the remainder of their lives....one day soon they may need to live off of this retirement income.

TAXES: We are very involved in organizing taxes by tracking all related tax deductible expenses. This is particularly cumbersome for the golfers who are independent contractors and need to record every golf related expense while on the road playing tournaments or tracking non-tournament expenses (coaches, trainers, agent fees, etc) . Tax returns are required for every state they play in thus income and expenses incurred in each state need to be recorded. Our involvement in this alleviates considerable stress and allows them to focus on their game. 36

Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2020

LENDING: Many athletes have trouble qualifying for traditional loans because of the uncertainly of their income . We have been in this business for decades and are able to mitigate the risks and approve loans which many other institutions struggle with.

OTHER MISCELLANEOUS SERVICES: Reviewing their insurance program and recommending changes where needed; reviewing their estate plans; bill paying; Cash flow and Retirement Planning. Above all else, trust is crucial when building a relationship with a client who is an athlete. After all, this is a group that is notorious for attracting advisors who have only their own best interests in mind. “A testament to the trust that we have earned: we have 175 athletes and 100% have been referred by fellow clients, their agents or other professionals in the community. We have never marketed our services to athletes in order to build the business. We are very proud of that,” Highmark said.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES FOR ATHLETES AT FINEMARK BANK:

+ Review trust and wills where they exist and recommend updating based on life changes... or assist in setting up an estate plan where none exists.

+ Bill paying: Because of an athlete's extensive travel schedules, this is a very popular service. January 2020 | Scottsdale Lifestyle
