With all the options available today — rideshare apps, such as Uber or Lyft, taxis, public transportation or family and friends who have not consumed alcohol — there’s no excuse to drive while impaired. Since shelterin-place orders began in March, MADD Georgia has continued to provide supportive services virtually to victims of drunk and drugged driving. Funds raised from the virtual LER will support MADD’s research-based programs to end drunk and drugged driving, support the victims affected by impaired driving and prevent underage drinking. Statewide supporters can donate by calling (770) 615-3737, ext 7352. For those impacted by drunk driving and may have lost a loved one, MADD Georgia is also holding monthly online support groups. Chef Michaelle Tell: For me, Autumn is the time of year full of color changes and I like those Autumnal colors to show through in my food. We will be putting out a delicious braised lamb shank entrée with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and a root vegetable medley all smothered in our house demi-glace. We will also be presenting our blackened salmon entrée with a pumpkin risotto and our roasted butternut squash hummus appetizer. For most of my dishes a lot of inspiration comes from my Southern GA roots infused with a Middle Eastern flair that I came to embrace during the past 8 years of my career here in the Metro Atlanta area, running kitchens for some of the most awarded and popular Middle Eastern restaurants in the area. We’ll be serving up Brunswick Stew this autumn here at Lake & Oak Neighborhood BBQ. It’s got a Southern base with some Chicago flair from my business partner Chef Todd Richards. At home, my wife loves to make hearty chili to warm us all up. Our kids also love pumpkin seeds so expect lots of those in our oven. My wife, Saara, is the backbone of my success. She keeps our family balanced and focused so I can support Lake & Oak while I’m here and her and our kids while at home. Serving carry-out and limited in-person patio seating. Any day buttermilk blueberry pancakes OUR EDITOR'S FAVORITE RECIPE

ARTICLE ADAPTED FROM THE NEWYORK TIMES | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

THIS PAST SUMMER, OUR FAMILY RETREATED TO LAKE MICHIGAN FOR OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY. We looked forward to seeing life-long friends, sailing on Little Traverse Bay, hiking down to watch the sunset at 9:30 p.m. and going to our favorite breakfast joint for pancakes. When we discovered Park Place had closed, we cried, collected ourselves then turned to the trusty New York Times cooking app (always dependable) for recipes. After trying a few, we landed on this one and added blueberries because in northern Michigan in August, you must. Make a few extra and take to a neighbor who lives alone! 20

+ 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted + 1 cup fresh blueberries (frozen, in a pinch) + Vegetable, canola or coconut oil for the pan DIRECTIONS Heat the oven to 325 degrees Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and kosher salt together in a bowl. Using the whisk, make a well in the center. Pour the buttermilk into the well and crack eggs into buttermilk. Pour the melted butter into the mixture. Starting in the center, whisk everything together, moving towards the outside of the bowl, until all ingredients are incorporated. Do not overbeat (lumps are fine). The batter can be refrigerated for up to one hour. (Put a dinner plate on top of the bowl and avoid plastic!) Heat a large nonstick griddle or skillet, preferably cast-iron, over low heat for about 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet. Turn heat up to medium–low. Use an ice cream scoop or 1/3 cup measuring cup and spoon batter into pan. Dot each pancake liberally with berries. Flip pancakes after bubbles rise to surface and bottoms brown, about 2 to 4 minutes. Cook until the other sides are lightly browned. Remove pancakes

LOCALLY OWNED

Dine in...or out! THE LIFE OF A REALTOR MEANS HELPING FAMILIES FIND FOREVER HOMES, TRANSITIONAL SPACES AND RIPE-FOR-RENOVATION SPACES. They walk through hundreds of homes each year and see some of Alpharetta’s most stunning homes. We asked superstar realtor Mary Ellen Vanakan to share a few of her recent stand-outs. DINE IN The kitchen was in one of our listings in The Northshore of Windward. When the buyers purchased this home the kitchen was in terrible shape and required a complete gut of the space and total redesign. The Works in Milton redesigned the space to maximize entertaining space with a custom 10-foot black walnut topped island, Wolf 48” dual fuel 6 burner range with griddle, Subzero refrigerator, and more. The window at the kitchen sink has a gorgeous seasonal view of Lake Windward and a beautiful serene backyard. This kitchen has hosted parties for 100 guests as the owners love to entertain! DINE OUT The outdoor kitchen is one of the features in a home with a salt water pool and boat dock on Lake Windward. This home sold this summer (but is one of our favorites) and is perfect for entertaining family and friends of all ages. The outdoor kitchen anchors the outdoor living space for gatherings to chat, roast marshmallows and swim under the night sky filled with stars. You can take virtual tours of properties listed with The Mary Ellen Vanaken Team at NorthAtlantaLuxury.com. They are listing and selling homes with a new set of tools to ensure the sellers and buyers are safe and confident throughout the partnership.

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!

+

Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!

+

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combina-

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!
