He continued, “After fishing the panhandle of Florida for most of my life, I have truly found sportsman’s paradise at St. George. We caught our limit of red snapper and we also caught grouper, amberjack, Mackerel, we even brought in a blackfin tuna that day. The best thing was we didn’t see another boat all day, unlike the panhandle. The forgotten coast is the only place for me from now on when it comes to fishing.” As you can see, St. George Island holds a very special place in our collective hearts. It takes us all back in time when fish were a plenty and nature stood still. After speaking to these men, I realized that although these fishing trips always brought in a huge catch, it wasn’t only the fish they brought home, but one heck of an experience.

PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF MAINTAINING WELLNESS FOR MEN. It is often a slow-growing cancer and is strongly dependent on oneâ€™s family history in first-degree male relatives (e.g. father and brothers) in terms of developing it. In African-American and Hispanic men, it can be more aggressive. It is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men, and roughly one in six Caucasian men and one in five African-American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. Screening for it is as simple as making a preventive appointment with your primary care physician, discussing your family history with him or her, and having a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test to measure this important marker for prostate cancer, which can be modestly elevated in other conditions which your physician can discuss with you. Men ages 55 to 69 years of age at average risk and who are asymptomatic, per the United States Preventive Services Task Force and the American Urological Association, may have this test performed yearly as a part of their annual physical or annual wellness visits.

Shared decision making between physician and patient is important to discuss your risk, your need for testing, and next steps if your PSA level is elevated and concerning. Knowing your risk will save your life.
