My two-year-old daughter soon follows suit. I rub my eyes, throw the covers off, and step into my house slippers. I’m living in them these days. Time to get up, and get moving. It’s going to be a long day in quarantine, just like yesterday, and just like tomorrow. I know I’m not alone when I say that an extended shelter-in-place order with kids has not been easy. School is topsy-turvy, daycares are closed, babysitters are isolating like the rest of us, and every place of interest for young people is off-limits: libraries, rec centers, playgrounds, all of it. I took the first couple weeks of cooped-up COVID-19 quarantine fairly well, but by week three, four, five...I was worn down to something vaguely resembling a parent who often threw a bowl of cereal on the table and called it dinner. But the truth is, I’m incredibly fortunate. My husband and I have been able to work from home, we have a roof over our heads, and food in the pantry. It’s been heavy on my heart that so many of my fellow valley parents have had far greater burdens to bear in recent weeks. I have especially been thinking about mothers, who are often the custodi-

who worries if she is risking her own family’s health after caring for others who are sick. Someday when the dust of this crisis settles, I hope that we will see and value others in our community in new and more meaningful ways. May we all count our blessings as they fall in the coming months, and keep our hearts open to those in need. And to all the mamas out there: You’re doing great. completely to reduce public health risk. Although online shopping is tempting, our local retail establishments will continue to offer personalized service and unique products which can only be found in brick-and-mortar. Visit the shops you love as soon as they’re open again, or call/email to grab gift cards for future purchases. Plan a shopping date with friends at one of the valley’s downtown areas this summer, and catch up while keeping your dollars local.

HOME & REAL ESTATE Many small businesses offering services for the home (think housekeepers, carpenters, plumbers, designers) have not been able to work for weeks during quarantine. Reach out to the professionals who help you maintain your home, and ask how you can best offer support. during his junior year of high school, she knew he needed the right treatment. “I can’t quite remember how I found our doctor at that time, years ago,” Kacy recalls. “But I wanted the best, and I got the best.” Little did she know, the orthopedic surgeon Kacy found—Dr. Ferdinand “Tito” Liotta of Glenwood Orthopedic Center at Valley View—would not only repair Taylor’s torn rotator cuff that year, but would later go on to treat both of her own shoulders and one of Trae’s as well. “Our family loves Tito,” she says. “We have a hereditary disposition to shoulder injuries, and all of us are very active as well. He was always straightforward about what needed to be done for each of us, and helped provide guidance for recovery to help us get back to doing what we love to do.” Kacy works as a full-time hairdresser, which means that her arms are out in front of her trimming and blow-drying for eight hours a day. She also grew up playing volleyball and softball, so the years of vigorous athletics combined with daily wear and tear of working as a hair stylist eventually caught up with her. “Before my first surgery, I was in a lot of pain,” Kacy remembers. “I couldn’t even lift my arm to do the dishes.” Fortunately, she knew who to call. “With shoulder issues, if someone has a tear, it doesn’t necessarily mean surgery,” says Dr. Liotta. “It’s about pain. So with Kacy, I really wanted to see her get back to a place where she could enjoy activity and life again without pain.” Kacy’s right shoulder surgery was completed in 2010, and her left shoulder was repaired in 2014. She was diligent in caring for herself during the recovery process for both, and had gotten back into her normal routine when, in March 2019, her younger son Trae suffered a sudden shoulder injury. “After high school, Trae played football at Colorado State for four and a half years and then started playing professionally as an offensive lineman for the Atlanta Legends with the AAF [Alliance of American Football],” Kacy says. “I traveled all over the country going to his games over the years, and Bill and I were at the game in Arizona where he got hurt last year. Trae went for a cut block, and blew his shoulder out. It was 10 seconds before halftime. When they pulled him aside I remember he looked at me and just shook his head, and said ‘It’s not good, mom.’” Trae had torn his labrum when the shoulder dislocated backward, and he would need surgery to repair it. The Legends offered to have him use a doctor through the team, or select one of his own choosing. With any surgeon in the country available to him for treatment, Trae chose Dr. Liotta. “He dropped everything he was doing at the moment I called him from Atlanta, and made sure he could accommodate me,” Trae says. “I have great respect and admiration for Tito.” Now more than a year out from his surgery, Trae says he’s feeling 100 percent thanks to the superior care he received. He was drafted by the XFL last year, but ultimately decided to retire from professional sports and start a new career here in the valley.

GINA D’ORA ZIO STRYKER MOM TO JADEN, ASHA, THEO, AND ATREYA | CARBONDALE WHAT HAS MOTHERHOOD TAUGHT YOU ABOUT YOURSELF? “It has taught me to slow down, to realize that we are raising adults—that we need to give them the tools to be adults, while giving them the freedom to be children. That I learn more from them on any given day than what I teach them. That the unexpected will always happen and how you roll with it is what builds resilience. That a smile goes a long way. That being right is never the best answer—but leaning into love is. Watching each of my children grow, I realize that they have everything inside them to be complete, whole, perfect. I am blessed.”

ESTEL A LÓPE Z GUDINO MOM TO XIMENA AND JOEL | BASALT WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A MOM? “I like being a mother because I feel love around me each and every day. This love gives me the internal strength to move mountains that present themselves in life. I believe my children to be the best form of self growth as they teach me to be more patient, tolerant, sensible, and brave. I like being a mother because they have made me an empowered woman who reaches out of her comfort zone. My children bring out a youthful side of me everyday with their never-ending laughs, jokes, games, and questions. I like being a mother because children unite families, but what I love the most is that through listening to them, I have realized and learned that they are teachers of life. Because of this, I consider being a mother to be an authentic gift that I appreciate wholeheartedly.”

Striking A Balance

BRITTANY HAILEY OF CACTUS VACATIONS ON MOTHERHOOD, SMALL BUSINESS, AND FINDING WHAT ‘HAVING IT ALL’ MEANS TO HER

24

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | May 2020

IN AUGUST 2018, BRITTANY HAILEY WAS TWO DAYS POSTPARTUM WHEN SHE GOT AN IMPORTANT PHONE CALL. Her son Hawthorne had just arrived, and Hailey was still adjusting to life with an infant when a professional opportunity knocked—and she took it. In the span of 48 whirlwind hours, Hailey suddenly found herself simultaneously venturing forth in two brand new roles: that of a mother, and that of a business owner. Looking back, she recalls that this was a defining crossroads in her life. “I was working in the marketing department at a local skincare company, and I was very dedicated to my career, always have been,” Hailey says. “I always thought I’d be able to have my career, and I was very vocal about that all the way through my pregnancy. But something in me started to change after my son was born.” Hailey and her husband had also been managing an Airbnb on their property for a few years, and he had recently commented that she should consider making something of her talent for hosting. “I’d become really passionate about the hosting experience,” she says. “In a couple years I’d grown our Airbnb into one of the top listings in Carbondale, with the most reviews. But when my husband encouraged me to branch out, and maybe do something bigger with it, I just brushed it off at first.” But then, Hawthorne was born—and that important call came in. It was from a local homeowner who had heard about what Hailey had built with her own listing; he wanted to know if she would be interested in managing his second home as a vacation rental, too, and could she start asap? Unsure how she would pull it all together, Hailey jumped headfirst and said yes. She gained the first client of what would soon become her new vacation rental management business, Cactus Vacations.

“I HAVE DEEP RESPECT FOR ALL MOTHERS AND THE CHOICES THEY MAKE...I’M VERY, VERY GRATEFUL THAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO WORK THROUGH OPTIONS AND BUILD THE KIND OF FLE XIBLE SITUATION THAT WORKS BEST FOR ME DURING THIS TIME IN MY LIFE.”

take on different roles out of necessity. So I’m very, very grateful that I’ve been able to work through options and build the kind of flexible situation that works best for me during this time in my life.” So how does she do it? Due to the nature of her business, Hailey’s work days never look quite the same from one week to the next. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays she cares for Hawthorne while doing supply runs, visiting properties, meeting with contractors, and checking off other to-do list items that can be accomplished with a toddler in tow. On Tuesdays and Thursdays her son attends Blue Lake Preschool, affording her time to catch up on office work and other tasks that require total attention, and maybe even squeeze in a yoga class or self-care activity. One of the most fulfilling parts of running Cactus Vacations, Hailey says, is her commitment to partnering with other moms of young children who need flexibility, too. She works directly with a cleaning team and other local female professionals who help care for her properties. “When my clients choose my business over bigger national companies like Vacasa or Turnkey, they’re truly investing in our local economy,” Hailey notes. “Their dollars are going to my local crew and staying in the Roaring Fork Valley, rather than disappearing with some big out-of-state corporation.” Many women aspire to “having it all,” or attaining that elusive state of balance between work, children, and self, but Hailey feels that perhaps this is an unfair—and unrealistic—expectation of mothers. In releasing this from her own life, she has found a way to settle into motherhood and simply make the most of what she can build herself. “Maybe it’s actually impossible to ‘have it all’ once you become a mom,” she says. “And I just like to think, what if that’s ok? Of course we’re different after having children. Our lives don’t have to stop; we just have to get creative. So I’m finding what balance means for me.”

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A new N o r m a l

PHOTOGRAPHY ESTATEPHOTOVIDEO.COM - MICHAEL HEFFERON

OUR VALLEY HAS BEEN THROUGH A LOT THIS SPRING. People have called and emailed me wondering if we were going to continue producing Roaring Fork Lifestyle. My answer to them, and to you, is YES. We are a community magazine that brings uplifting stories to your home during a very trying time, along with ads by our marketing partners who are all small local business owners. Now more than ever, the continued support you can show small valley businesses is crucial for our community to recover from the COVID-19 quarantine. Roaring Fork Lifestyle continues to promote small businesses. The businesses we partner with are not large national corporations, but family operations owned by neighbors and friends you know here in the valley. We do so in our magazine, Facebook, Instagram, and our new website: CityLifestyle.com (please check it out, like us, and share.) If you see something of interest in our pages, reach out to that business or organization. If they are temporarily closed, leave a message or send an email telling them you are interested in their products or services and will be in touch when they are back serving their customers. Let them know that you will help them regain lost ground. And although it seems that the world has come to a complete standstill, remember that many sectors of our community are still in operation despite the risks. Let’s give extra thanks for those of us who help keep the valley running even during a health crisis: our grocery store staff, public service workers, teachers, health care professionals, and so many more. We all have suffered the constant bombardment of frightening news that can feel overwhelming. But the good news is, that we are in this together—and will get through it together. When we are overwhelmed, small choices can help us take back a little control. Making a commitment to keeping our dollars in the valley will help us recover the quality of life that we have long cherished here. Consider the positive impact you can make by choosing local in the coming months. Do your part to help get our valley through this “new normal.” Most importantly, stay safe and take good care of each other during this time. Our valley will see this through. With gratitude,
