IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS! WHAT A WHIRLWIND SUMMER WE HAVE ALL HAD THUS FAR. As a full time working mother, I thought of the many hampered summer vacations, summer camp, planned activities, and team sports changes due to Covid-19. I look back and feel blessed that although most events were canceled family love and community support were tighter than ever.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN 2016 MANUEL SANCHEZ, A RETIRED ENGINEER AND POTOMAC LOCAL, WAS LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB OPPORTUNITY. He considered purchasing different franchises involving burgers and decided on BurgerFi,
BurgerFi – Pike & Rose's Father-Son Restaurant
(short for Burgerfication of the Nation), a young brand started in 2011 that emphasized 100 percent fresh, madeto-order burgers. He liked the solid corporate structure and the concept of selling Angus beef burgers free of steroids, antibiotics and additives. With his son Diego he purchased a BurgerFi first in Silver Spring followed by a location in Woodbridge, Virginia. They then decided to build their own restaurant from the ground up in North Bethesda, in the Pike & Rose Shopping Center. They built two more restaurants this summer, one in Towson, Maryland and another in White Marsh in Baltimore. Diego stresses that they are all are eco-friendly and family-friendly, with television shows and music available to appeal to all ages.

Robin’s dad, Vikkram (a patent examiner with the U.S. Dept. of Commerce) and his mom, Monica (a family-medicine doctor) were born in India and came to the United States as adults. Robin and his older brother, Sunny, were born here. Vikkram is a board member, co-founder and CFO of Charity 4 the Children. Charity 4 the Children seeks to empower, equip, and ameliorate the circumstances of economically disadvantaged children. C4C (as it is known) has raised enough money to donate books, mathematical tools like compasses and protractors, and other resources to schools throughout the DMV. At his internship at the Walter Reed-affiliated center, Robin learned about the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system, “I created dual-CRISPR vectors and deleted carcinogenic proteins,” he said. At his Johns Hopkins internship, he worked with the development of nano-sensors and learned the social dynamics of working in a lab. Through his work with the Stanford Parkinson’s Disease Story Exchange, Robin helped transcribe stories for the group’s podcast, and hosted some of his own podcasts. In the fall, Robin plans to attend the University of Maryland College Park. “I’m majoring in biological sciences: neurobiology and physiology with a minor in computer science,” he said, and added, “I’m hoping to double minor in entrepreneurship or double major in supply chain management. I am also hoping to expand C4C at school,” he said. “But I am realist. I know that being in pre-med and dealing with the covid situation, and taking all these classes, and having a double major and a minor etc. is zealous.” “My dad says, ‘At the end of the day, be realistic. Do what you can do, and be grateful for what you did.’” Robin said, and added, “I am grateful for what I did and I plan to stick with it.”

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) RYAN AND CARLI NEEDLE Due to the coronavirus, college student Ryan Needle found himself - like so many others - studying for final exams at home. Unlike most, however, he figured he had spare time to help improve the lives of others suffering during the pandemic. A rising sophomore mechanical engineering student at the University of Michigan who had already flexed his entrepreneurial muscles by 3D printing and selling fidget spinners to his classmates at Winston Churchill High School, Ryan said, “We were determined to be agents of change and find a way to contribute within our local community and across the country,” referring to a venture he undertook with his sister, Carli, a rising senior pre-med student at Vanderbilt University. Ryan founded EZShields and designed and prototyped his product. “It’s a protective face shield that attaches to most hats, visors, and glasses, providing a physical barrier between the wearer’s face and the external environment,” he explained. The shields can be cleaned and reused. They provide an extra layer of protection over the cloth face masks that many people are now wearing in public. “The most unique aspect of this product,” Ryan said, “its the 3D-printed clips, that allow the shields to fit on hats and glasses.” After many late nights and more than 20 early clip designs, Ryan settled on a clip that works. Carli serves as Director of External Outreach. “I am working to extend the reach of this project to particularly vulnerable populations in our local community,” she said. Through her partnerships with Montgomery County non-profits, EZShields has so far donated about 150 shields to Stepping Stones Homeless Shelter, So What Else (a regional after-school non-profit), SEEC (an agency that supports people with intellectual and

Ryan prints the plastic clips on his personal 3D printer at his family’s Potomac home. “I can probably print about 50 sets (of clips) in a day,” he explained. For the clear acetate shields, Ryan uses binding

Staples in Rockville donated some of these, which Ryan and Carli used for the shields they donated. “They so generously agreed to donate some supplies to help propel this project,” Ryan said of Staples. Ryan and Carli list the goals of the project as: helping society defeat COVID-19 using Ryan’s engineering background and Carli’s experience with community

ANIMAL KINGDOM ARTICLE MARIE ROBEY WOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Interested in Adopting a Rescue Animal? NOW MAY BE THE PERFECT TIME! ANDY KOSTKA OF ROCKVILLE ALWAYS WANTED TO OWN A DOG BUT THE RECENT COLLEGE GRADUATE FACED ONE BIG HURDLE: HIS PARENTS SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES AND WERE WORRIED THAT HAVING A PET IN THE HOUSE WOULD ONLY EXACERBATE THEIR PROBLEMS. However, with the family now hunkering down at home during the coronavirus epidemic, they decided to take the plunge in March. The result: a match made in heaven. Andy contacted his local animal shelter, the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center, MCASAC, to see what was available. That is when he found Parks, an underweight mixed-breed German Shepherd puppy who was found abandoned on the street. Following the MCASAC’s protocol, Andy agreed to foster his dog for a short time to see if the pet was a good fit for his family. After a few short weeks Andy reported that everyone in his home was in love with Parks, and he formerly adopted Parks on April 2nd. According to Andy, “Having a dog has made me so much happier during this difficult time.” Another animal adopted locally during Covid-19 from MCASAC is a seven-year old Himalayan cat named Cici. Her owner, Erika Jenkins, reports that “I’m so thrilled with her. She’s such

Another important non-profit partner with Montgomery County’s pet shelter is the Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being, MCPAW. According to Anselmo, MCPAW’s assistance has been essential in helping animals who come to the shelter who need immediate emergency care. Through their veterinary medical fund, which is supported by donations, they have paid for animals to have surgeries for medical issues ranging from torn ACLs to heart and abdominal problems. Wendy Walker, DVM, is the Chief of Staff of Town & Country Animal Clinic in Olney. She has seen a huge surge of people rescuing and purchasing animals in her clinic but also notes

that often new puppies need basic puppy training that isn’t available now except online. She cautions that potential dog owners need to consider two things before they adopt: First, they should look at their budget when they decide to adopt because big dogs can more expensive. Just their routine care and medications can cost more than those of smaller dogs. Second, one of the downsides of being home all day with a new dog is that when the owners go back to work dogs can suffer from separation anxiety. Doggy day care is one option for dogs who suddenly have no one at home and conferring with the dog’s veterinarian can also be a good idea.

They knew I cared about them, cared about their learning and would do anything to help them learn. I still had high expectations for them, still allowed them to retake assessments, was still available for extra instruction.” During remote learning, Ms. Turett changed the way she assessed students. Flipgrid software was one way. “I am definitely going to use Flipgrid again. It makes it easier to have students explain their thought process. Fusion Academy Rockville, Homework C a f é Te a c h e r A n d r a H a r m a t u c k Ms. Harmatuck began at Fusion in 2010 at the original California campus, and now she’s been with Fusion the longest of anyone at the Rockville campus. “Building positive relationships with our students is the foundation for success at Fusion,” she said. “Talking with our students and learning about them as unique individuals allows positive and trusting relationships to develop organically. My role helps to develop skills beyond those taught in a traditional classroom. While some students may need help with a math problem and others might need help editing a paper, other students might also need support in developing friendships and building confidence. In the Homework Cafe, our students learn to advocate for themselves and develop comfort in seeking and receiving help. We think of the Homework Cafe as the heart of the campus and the love we pour into our students enables them to flourish.”

Geneva Day School, A r t E n r i c h m e n t Te a c h e r Barbara Korb “It’s ‘Lavender Mist’ by Jackson Pollock!” Geneva Day Kindergartners have been known to exclaim when visiting the National Gallery of Art, as a finale to Mrs. Barbara Korb’s beloved Art Enrichment Program. Mrs. Korb’s informed and inspired graduates revel in understanding art vocabulary and techniques, and feel confident about their ability to recognize masterpieces. “Children have the freedom to express their unique ideas and they feel joy in their art processes,” explained Mrs. Korb. Her spiraling art curricula, defined by hands-on lessons that expand on previous years’ instruction, include Elements of Art (for 3s and 4s), Nature Art and Native American Indian Art (for PreK) and Art History (for Kindergarten). A bi-annual, school-wide art show celebrating student-generated masterpieces is a colorful complement to the National Gallery of Art field trip and another way Geneva Day School fosters a lifelong love of learning.

“They're very visual subjects,” said Mr. Lee, referring to chemistry and physics, when he added, “which helps to keep them exciting.” Mr. Lee’s enthusiasm also helps. “Students clearly see I enjoy what I teach and have a good time doing it. So, it's easier for them to buy in and get invested,” he explained. Mr. Lee’s students say that they think he is “chill, casual and fun, but serious when it matters." Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Lee said, “It was harder when my teachers were clearly putting on airs or wearing another face: It just seemed fake. I try very hard to genuinely be who I am. I think the students appreciate this because they don't put on faces in class: They are who they are, so I should be who I am when I do the same for them.”

H o w t o Wo r k Fr o m Home When the Kids A r e H o m e , To o WHETHER YOU USUALLY WORK FROM HOME OR YOU’VE BEEN THRUST INTO THIS NEW DYNAMIC BECAUSE OF COVID-19, WORKING FROM HOME CAN BE A CHALLENGE WHILE JUGGLING EDUCATING AND CARING FOR KIDS. Even as stayat-home orders begin to lift, many companies and individuals will continue to work from home for many months ahead to maintain social distancing. Add to this, both school and work closures may go back and forth as the country, state, and communities deal with the uncertainties of the pandemic. Already, kids and parents alike feel stuck and miss their friends, activities, and normal routines. This new family dynamic, coupled with the anxiety and stress from what’s happening in the world, may make it seem impossible to get anything done. But the following tips can help you develop a routine and environment that works for you and your family so you can get your job done. 28
Potomac Lifestyle | August 2020
CREATE AND FOLLOW ROUTINES Kids thrive on consistent routines like those they have at school. So make a list of what your family needs to get done throughout the day - work calls, completing tasks, school zoom meetings, school work, meals, chores, and anything else. Be sure to include some time for fun as well! Now, start filling in a schedule with the activities that occur at set times and work in other responsibilities and activities to create a family schedule. Include your kids in the planning, so they feel involved and more willing to follow the routine. Then post the schedule where the whole family can see it. Also, be sure to adjust the design of the schedule for the age of your kids. Younger children benefit from straightforward visuals using bright colors, precise times, and pictures to make the schedule clear. SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS Kids and adults tend to do better when there are clear expectations set beforehand. Agree on a set of rules and expectations for the day regarding your work time and their school time. With older kids, sit down and make a written contract. If you have younger kids, work together to create a poster with visuals. To make it clear, talk about what different parts of your schedule, especially your work time, look and sound like, and what everyone should and shouldn’t be doing. This will probably be a difficult adjustment at first. So it can help to set up a visual reminder to let your kids know when you cannot be disturbed except for emergencies. Create a sign outside your workspace that clearly states the beginning and ending time of your work hours. This can help kids to be more patient. For younger kids, use a countdown clock so they can anticipate the end time. DESIGNATE A WORKSPACE If you’re not used to working from home, recreating a space that feels like going to a workplace can get you into a better routine and improve your focus. Try to create your workplace away from the main areas of your home and, if possible, with a door you can close. These tricks will also help remind your kids not to disturb you when you’re in your workspace. Make your workspace as sim-

DIY (CONTINUED) ASK FOR HELP This isn’t the time to try to do everything yourself. If you have a partner at home, take turns spending time with the kids so you can each have uninterrupted time to focus on work or time to yourself to recharge. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or are struggling to get something done for work, talk to your boss or team about the situation before things become too difficult. Everyone is affected in some way by the COVID-19 outbreak and, therefore, will likely understand. If you’re struggling to balance work and being home with the kids, try talking to them at their level. Kids are more aware and understanding than we often realize. So an open conversation with them may help. BE FLEXIBLE No one knows how long this is going to last, and everything about sheltering in place is new. So realize it will take time to adjust. Even if a strategy works one day, it may not work the next. This is a difficult time for kids as well, who may not fully understand what’s going on or be able to handle it emotionally. Unexpected things will come up in your work, with your kids, or any other aspect of your life. So, try to build in some wiggle room because you’ll likely need to make changes as you go. For example, if the day is going really smoothly, perhaps work a little longer to accomplish a bit more in case things don’t go smoothly on another day. STAY POSITIVE Focus on the positive aspects of being home with your kids. Remember, the circumstance is only temporary. Things will eventually get done, and everyone is trying their best to manage right now with their own set of challenges and obstacles. Try to balance work and quality time with your family while you’re all stuck at home. The effort you make to do so can help your family bond and turn a tumultuous time into one filled with good memories.

MEET FIFI! ARTICLE ABBEY ZHENG PHOTOGRAPHY ANA GUTIERREZ COVARRUBIAS
FAVORITE TREAT: PEANUT BUTTER
I ADOPTED FIFI WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. She was the smallest puppy in her litter and hid behind her mom when we first met her. From the moment I first held Fifi, I knew she was meant to be in our family! Fifi’s energy is incredibly contagious. I love going on hikes with Fifi, we both love spending time outside in the sun! Fifi is always there to cheer me and my sister when we come back from a long day at school. Fifi loves to cuddle, get belly rubs, and play with her stuffed dragon. Occasionally, Fifi enjoys getting dressed up in her raincoat when it’s raining and Christmas tree costume on Christmas Eve. Fifi is one of the friendliest dogs you’ll ever meet and is always excited to meet new people, especially at the park! Her favorite treat is peanut butter! If you’re making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Fifi will want to lick the peanut butter right off your hands!
LOVES: GETTING DRESSED UP, BELLY RUBS
