October is

NATIONAL DENTAL HYGIENE MONTH,

an effort to celebrate the work dental hygienists do and to help raise awareness on the importance of good oral health. This year focus on four routines that can help people maintain healthy smiles: brush, floss, rinse and chew. The ADA recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, for two minutes, with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of the brush should fit the mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.

The ADA recommends cleaning between your teeth once a day to remove plaque that is not removed by brushing. Plaque can eventually harden into calculus or tartar.

H ELPI NG YOU LI V E YOU R

American Dream Ease | C h o i ce | Ad v ice

Because teeth alone account for less than half of the mouth, rinsing can help eliminate biofilm and bacteria that brushing, and flossing cannot. Rinsing often, along with brushing and flossing, may help reduce the chance of dental decay and infection. However, avoid rinses that have alcohol in them. Lastly, clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay. The chewing of sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, which washes away food and other debris, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth.

NEW ORLEANS’ CUISINE IS CALLING

ARTICLE STEPHANIE HOWER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

20

Billings Lifestyle | October 2019

T he city of New Orleans IS RENOWNED FOR ITS COLORFUL CULTURE—BOASTING LIVE MUSIC, FESTIVALS, HISTORY, ART AND, OF COURSE, FABULOUS FOOD.

Foodies flock to the Big Easy from around the globe, eager to enjoy delightfully diverse menus cultivated by an equally diverse history spanning more than 300 years. Local cuisine incorporates recipes from Paris to Port au Prince and from the Congo to Cadiz. The result is a delectable mixture of Creole, Cajun, French, soul food, and more. “Of course, New Orleans is a mecca for culinary adventures of all kinds,” attests Billie Ruff, owner of Travel Cafe. She believes a visit to New Orleans is worth the trip—just for the food alone. “Emeril Lagasse’s restaurants continue to be show stoppers,” she says, referring to the über famous chef who has made a name for himself and New Orleans’ cuisine worldwide. His four local restaurants serve Cajun and Creole dishes that highlight the region’s distinctive fare. “By all means, visitors to New Orleans should try the abundant seafood,” Billie urges, “including oysters, crawfish, shrimp, crab, blackened redfish, stuffed flounder, red snapper, pompano or trout en papillote and fried catfish.” One of the dishes most widely associated with NOLA may combine all of the above. “Gumbo is a special case,” Billie explains. “It can be made with all or just one of the above, as well as with chicken, okra and sausage. Jambalaya is also made with a variety of ingredients, including peppery rice with chicken or seafood.” Billie is particularly fond of Ralph Brennan’s Red Fish Grill, an award-winning restaurant located at the gateway to the iconic French Quarter. “They are famous for their southern oyster dishes,” she says. “Other legendary oyster bars include Acme Oyster House and Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar.” The city caters to patrons of all tastes, offering more than 1,000 eateries to satisfy every palate. Relish red beans and rice with spicy andouille sausage, a traditional Monday meal which is often offered for free in bars on that night.

Just be aware that some of New Orleans’ Old Guard restaurants require jackets for men and equivalent attire for women.” Plotting a course through the Crescent City (a name derived from the Mississippi River’s route around and through the town) yields one primary challenge: how will I have time to do it all? Be assured, each sector holds its own secrets and surprises, so there is no “best way” to visit. Yet, with the guidance of Travel Cafe, we have assembled a basic roadmap to culinary bliss and cultural fulfillment in New Orleans. Be advised, additional pitstops for listening to jazz music, perusing museums and sipping cocktails are encouraged. Ready your tastebuds for an unforgettable adventure. CONTINUED >

ACHIEVING OPTIMAL MEMORY AND BRAIN FUNCTION BEGINS WITH THE FOODS WE USE TO FUEL OUR BODIES. For those suffering from brain fog, depression, difficulty concentrating or any number of brain-related issues, Dr. Erin Amato, medical director for The Center for Ideal Health, believes diet may be the culprit. She helps individuals design personalized lifestyle medicine programs to achieve optimal health at any age. “A big part of our mission is prevention,” Dr. Amato explains. “Our aim is to build a healthy foundation and avoid the onset of chronic disease.” She shares five of the best ways to give your brain a boost through food.

ARTICLE STEPHANIE HOWER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

BRAIN HEALTH: OPTIMIZING MEMORY AND COGNITION

"If it goes bad, it’s good for yo u . I f i t stays good, it’s bad f o r yo u ."

SNACK ON HEALTHY FATS Avocados, coconut oil and coconut butter, olive oil, nuts and seeds, eggs and fatty fish are all examples of “quality fats” essential to overall health and well-being. Eating healthy fats can improve taste preferences, reduce food intake (by shutting off the brain’s hunger and craving center) and even bolster metabolism. SIP GREEN TEA Loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, green tea is especially rich in polyphenols, which have effects like reducing inflammation and helping fight cancer. CHOOSE THE RIGHT MEAT Grass-fed cattle are usually raised without antibiotics, and the beef contains omega-3 fatty acids. For higher concentrations of omega-3s, choose wild-caught fish such as mackerel or salmon. Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential component of the brain and eyes. EMBRACE THE RAINBOW Incorporate a colorful array of fruits and vegetables into meals. Eating the rainbow offers an expansive variety of nutrients, including ones with anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. EAT REAL FOOD Whole, organic, fresh, local and unprocessed food is best. Focus on shopping the perimeter of the grocery store for fresh produce. Try to choose organic; chemicals and pesticides can be toxic and are detrimental to brain health.

26 MASQUERADE AT THE YAM 401 N. 27th St.

The Yellowstone Art Museum offers the premier costume party in Billings, an event where creativity reigns.

As the most experienced health care organization in Montana and Wyoming to offer specialized gynecologic oncology services, we are passionate about this month and spreading awareness about the importance of regular Pap tests and vaccination for the HPV virus.

The event features a live DJ, performances by Billings AlternaCirque, readings by local mystics, appetizers by Raven’s Café d’Art and the most unique costume contest in town. ArtMuseum.org/Masquerade

FACES OF BILLINGS ARTICLE STEPHANIE HOWER | PHOTOGRAPHY NATHAN SATRAN

“I DON’T BELIEVE IN THINGS JUST HAPPENING TO ME,” AUSTIN SAYLOR SAYS. “AS PEOPLE CLOSE TO ME KNOW, I WOULD SAY THAT’S A VICTIM STATEMENT”. INSTEAD, HE SUBSCRIBES TO THE BELIEF THAT OUR CHOICES DEFINE OUR DESTINY. “I’VE HAD MANY INTERESTING THINGS HAPPEN TO ME AS A RESULT OF MY Austin Saylor, General Manager, Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Billings

CHOICES. THE CHOICE TO LEAVE MY REAL ESTATE CAREER A DECADE AGO TO GET INTO THE AUTO INDUSTRY WAS PROBABLY THE MOST GUTSY CHOICE I HAD MADE UP TO THAT POINT IN MY LIFE.”

BUILDING HOME POSSIBILITIES

Before our remodel I was embarrassed to host parties or have company in our kitchen. It was crowded, dark, outdated, and not vey functional. After Ty Nelson's amazing renovation, I now love hosting people and we are so proud of our kitchen. To say we highly recommend Ty Nelson Design & Remodel would be an understatement!” ~ Pat and Jamie Carahasen
