sustainable fashion RUE BOUTIQUE CARRIES SOME BRANDS THAT ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS

SUSTAINABLE FASHION Rue Boutique carries some brands that are environmentally conscious Rue Boutique's in-house brand, Rue Label, available this Spring

In today’s world of “fast fashion,” clothes that are quickly produced in bulk, consumers at large don’t often stop to think how their material purchases affect the environment. The fashion industry, in fact, is one of the top industries in the world to impact the environment. Luckily, many retailers and fashion brands are doing their due diligence when it comes to some of the clothing they produce and sell. Locally, Ayellet Rubinstein, Owner of Rue Boutique in McCandless Crossing, has just begun the journey of doing her part in making sure some of the brands that she carries in her store are ethically sourced and environmentally friendly. “I have always been about investing in good clothes clothes made of good quality and clothes that do good

for the environment,” Ayellet says. “I am a firm believer in ‘slow fashion,’ so instead of consumers buying a lot of clothing that aren’t made well, it’s better to invest in a few pricier pieces of better quality that will last longer.” In fact, this is how Ayellet decides which brands to carry in her store. “Why I pick one brand over another is a process of researching the brand’s backstory. I’m not just bringing any brand in just to sell. I am all about buying well-made pieces that will last.” "We are conscious of the impact that the fashion industry has on the environment and decided to do something about it, which is why some of the brands that we carry are environmentally friendly." says Ayellet. Popular ones include Bed-Stu, Etica, J Brand, Grey State, and the Rue label. Each of these brands make it a part of their mission to have the least negative impact on the environment. “Bed-Stu, a shoe brand in my store, recently started using vegetable dye instead of chemical dye for the

shoes they produce,” Ayellet says. “Etica, which is coming to Rue Boutique Fall 2020, and J Brand are denim brands. The denim industry is known for wasting the most amount of water when being produced than any other fashion garment. Etica and J Brand have cut back and are doing their part to use water efficiently to produce their denim.” continues Ayellet. “Grey State, another brand that will be available in the store in Fall 2020 makes it their goal to manufacture their products in the most compliant, internationally-certified factories with the highest standards,” says Ayellet. “Our own in-house Rue label is manufactured in Los Angeles using organic cotton. So, I am always on the lookout for new brands that are environmentally conscience.” Ultimately, Ayellet feels that more people are becoming more selfaware about the clothes they wear and where they come from. “We all have a chance to impact the environment for better or worse. We have a voice and so many ways to help the planet, and this is just one of them.” Rue Boutique 730 Providence Blvd., McCandless 412.635.9900, Rueboutique.com

nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil.
