my role in our community. This has been unprecedented for sure and we may not have had the control we are accustomed too, but we are all still here and we will be stronger than ever on the other side. As the forefront publication for the Franklin and Leipers Fork area, I felt it was necessary to acknowledge the emotional toll this has taken on you, our Franklin readers and community-at-large. While this June issue will have many of the segments you enjoy (IE- home renovation ideas, interviews with a local celebrity, etc), this issue will also include special articles as the community works through several important topics (should the topic resonate or apply to you). We have a guest writer. She is a local psychologist who specializes in anxiety and will give us tools to help recognize signs of anxiety. Secondly, apparently phone calls to estate attorneys have skyrocketed for all age-brackets in the past few weeks. Estate planning is an important topic in general, but since it’s become an increased curiosity, we have an estate attorney breaking down the steps and terminology for estate planning.

health insurance who will address this in a short piece. We will also spotlight local community leaders and a few impacted businesses. Finally, we will be featuring and paying homage to nurses, doctors and essential personnel in our community through a photo collage in this issue. We have developed a logo called "Franklin Strong" and this logo will appear throughout the issue. My hope is that this logo will give us a sense of unity and that we are stronger together than we are individually. ARIZONA | CALIFORNIA | COLORADO | CONNECTICUT | FLORIDA | GEORGIA

Add tequila, lime juice, agave syrup, orange liquor, and ice. Shake for about 10 seconds. Take a copper mug or a tall glass and add fresh ice. Pour in 3 - 4 oz. of ginger beer then add the cocktail from the shaker. I like to strain it and then use a fine strainer, but either way is great. Crush a piece of ice and sift over the top of the cocktail. Add 2 dashes of bitters and your favorite herb and serve. THE CUSTOM TINY HOUSE HAPPILY AT HOME IN LEIPER’S FORK MARKET IS RED BYRD COFFEE, OWNED BY SADIE AND KYLE BROOKS. Opened in 2018, Red Byrd was almost 2 decades in the making. A native Californian, Sadie would often find coffee shops cozy and friendly; a “comforting place” for her to be. In the early 2000’s, a trained opera singer, Sadie changed her vocal vocation to bluegrass and eventually moved to Nashville. In 2011, Sadie met Boston native Kyle and the two quickly decided to get married. Though both were working and thriving in corporate America while accomplishing their music industry dreams, the coffee shop vision never left Sadie’s mind. Her father’s passing in 2017 was the final catalyst, highlighting that the “most important thing to be is happy and love what you do.” By early the following year, Red Byrd was open for business. The business bears the same name, though not the same spelling, as a song Sadie credits for “brightening her days and breathing new life” for her. Red Byrd “is all about joy.” Kyle is clear that customers are the focus of each and every coffee transaction. When he asks about your day, he not only wants to know your answer, he hears you. In our fast-paced culture, all too often people are not listening to each other. Kyle and Sadie not RED BYRD COFFEE SHOP 4348 Old Hillsboro Road

The Huff Project SUPPORT FOR LUNG CANCER IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE TENNESSEE OFFERS DOZENS OF SPECIALTY LICENSE PLATES THAT SUPPORT WORTHY CAUSES. We’ve all seen them featured on cars in front of us while driving or on a wall at the clerk’s office while renewing our registrations. You can find one for nearly anything you want to support – except lung cancer awareness. That’s where The Huff Project comes in. In Spring, 2017, after receiving a shocking diagnosis of stage IV lung cancer at twenty-nine years old, Stephen Huff, a Franklin native and Centennial High School teacher, noticed a breast cancer awareness specialty plate and thought he would look for one that supported lung cancer awareness. He found nothing. 48

Franklin Lifestyle | June 2020

Stephen and his wife Emily

Not long before that, after playing major league baseball for the White Sox and returning home to Franklin, Stephen noticed something was wrong. He started experiencing shortness of breath and wheezing. Soon, a chronic cough and a swollen lymph node were misdiagnosed as bronchitis. Antibiotics were ineffective. Stephen and his nowwife, Emily, were two months away from being married when, after more testing, a doctor broke the news to Stephen. Everything came to a screeching halt. “When you get that diagnosis, you feel like your whole world has been turned upside down.” said Stephen. Stephen never smoked. As a matter of fact, according to the American Cancer Society, 65% of new lung cancer cases occur in former smokers and people who have never smoked. That’s a pretty high percentage for the number-one cause of cancer-related deaths in America. Unfortunately, lung cancer gets a bad rap. When someone is diagnosed with lung cancer, instead of sympathy, the response that people can’t help but to have is, “Did you smoke?” In fact, Stephen said, “I was guilty of it myself. The first words out of my mouth when he told me I had cancer were, ‘But I’ve never smoked!’” The Huffs decided that they wanted to fight the negative stigma of lung cancer and create a Lung Cancer Awareness specialty license plate for Tennessee. “Someone dealing with this type of disease shouldn’t have to worry about the shame. They should just worry about getting better, focusing on their treatments, and how they can live a healthier life,” said Stephen. The Huff Project was founded in 2018 and began raising money and pre-orders for the license plate and awareness for lung cancer. “We took it as an opportunity to ask ourselves, what can we do to change this stigma? What can we do to show the world that the only thing you have to do to get lung cancer is have lungs?” said Stephen. Before they knew it, they found themselves wanting to do more. The Huff Project’s first fundraising event, “Chip-In for Lung Cancer Golf Scramble,” took place in October 2018. The next month, they hosted a Songwriters Night at The Factory in Franklin. They raised just under $100,000 that year, donating $25,000 of it to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In

4 TOOLS FOR COPING DURING UNCERTAINTY ARTICLE AMY MARIASKIN, PH.D 52

Franklin Lifestyle | June 2020

FOR MOST OF US, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS BROUGHT ABOUT LEVELS OF UNCERTAINTY NEVER BEFORE EXPERIENCED IN OUR LIFETIME. However, for those with anxiety disorders, high levels of uncertainty are the norm. As a psychologist who specializes in evidence-based treatment for anxiety, I want to share some tools that are helpful for coping in uncertain times. These steps, which include clarifying control, challenging unhelpful thoughts, and reducing excessive safety behaviors, are detailed below.

TOOL #1

BECOME AWARE OF WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT CONTROL ABOUT A SITUATION.

The current restrictions and guidelines related to COVID-19 can make it feel like there’s little that we can do to effect change. This is a valid way to feel during an event of this magnitude. However, it’s important both to practice acceptance of what you can’t control and to be deliberate about how you address what you can control. For example, as a parent, you may not have influence over when your child goes back to school or how their curriculum is implemented. But you can provide them with love and a sense of safety during a scary time. In fact, it may be liberating to embrace that this is a time for all of us to prioritize caring. By accepting the aspects that are out of your control, you can devote your energy to those that are.

TOOL #2

YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING AN UPTICK IN NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FUTURE.

Hearing a cough in the grocery store may lead to concerns about the presence of the virus and increased worries about future health. These are natural reactions in the face of a new threat, and it means that your brain is doing its job. Challenging these thoughts does not mean that you refute them completely, as we can’t predict the future; however, it opens up space for the possibility that they may not be true. As we often say in our clinic, “Don’t believe everything you think.” Additionally, using compassionate language with yourself, such as, “My brain is just trying to keep me safe” can create some distance between your thoughts and your reactions to the thoughts.

TOOL #3

I N T H E F A C E O F U N C E R TA I N T Y, I N D I V I D U A L S M AY F E E L C O M P E L L E D T O E N G A G E I N E X C E S S I V E LY C A U T I O U S B E H AV I O R I N A N E F F O R T T O M I T I G AT E R I S K .

While it may provide temporary relief to engage in these behaviors, over time it can actually make us more rather than less anxious. Each time that you increase these safety behaviors, you are telling your brain that the situation is threatening. Therefore, this tool involves limiting your safety or information-seeking behaviors (checking for symptoms, excessively cleaning, researching) to a moderate level.

TOOL #4

THE CURRENT PANDEMIC HAS MANY PEOPLE ASKING TOUGH QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR FUTURE. Where is the money going to go in the event of my death? Will my spouse get everything? How do I make sure my wishes are carried out? We reached out to estate attorney Justin Gilbert with Music City Estate Law to help us sort through the most commonly asked questions about setting up a will.

FINANCIAL BUZZ

buying private: choosing the right health insurance

ARTICLE TOM LAW

NOBODY SAW THIS COMING… AND CURRENTLY, QUESTIONS ABOUT HEALTHCARE AND INSURANCE ARE AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH. Many people who have had the advantage of having been on group insurance for most of their lives are now having to learn the ins and outs of the individual health insurance options along with how the market place works. It can truly be like learning a new language. Health protection has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. And many of the plans don’t look anything like what they used to. Rates and choices today are based off of a number of different categories, including age, annual income, and where you live, to name a few. Because of this, the process of getting signed up for a plan can be overwhelming for some people. Many people try to do this on their own… and not realizing some of the rules, end up purchasing a plan that could be costly down the road if they were to have an unexpected high priced medical expense. For many people coming off of group insurance, it looks a lot different than what they’re used to. Even though there are some positive features to these individual plans, there are also some gaps that need to be filled to help people pick out the best options. For some, falling inside a certain tax bracket based on the size of their family and their household income, will qualify them for subsidy. This can bring the
