Austin Life | September 2020

BELLA SALON WANTED TO SHOW THEIR GRATITUDE FOR UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS STUDENT AND FOUNDER OF POCKET PUNCH, ASHLEY RAYMOND, BY TREATING HER WITH A HAIRSTYLE AND PHOTOSHOOT! Here’s What Ashely had to say to us about her invention! HOW DID POCKET PUNCH BEGIN AND WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM? The idea for Pocket Punch was born in a class project to create a business idea and pitch it. In coming up with the idea for our project, we thought to ourselves, “what is one thing we would all like to change?” Before this project was announced, a stabbing had occurred on campus the previous semester, and a classmate passed away tragically as a result. Prior to that, another student was murdered on campus while walking home alone at night. After discussing, we realized we all wanted to feel more safe both on and off-campus. We asked students what they thought would be the most useful self-defense functions to carry on a daily basis, and we worked to combine these functions into one compact device. Soon, this class project grew into a real passion for our team. After presenting, we decided to make Pocket Punch a reality. Since then, we have graduated and we have been working hard on this 5-in-1 self defense device that we believe will give individuals the necessary tools to protect themselves in any given situation. WHAT IS THE MISSION OF POCKET PUNCH? Pocket Punch provides protection, power and peace of mind. Our mission is to empower individuals by providing them with the necessary tools to protect themselves in any situation. HOW HAS POCKET PUNCH AIDED THE AUSTIN COMMUNITY AND WHAT IS THE MOTIVATING FORCE BEHIND IT? We are a team of young women. Some of us have had scary firsthand experiences, and we have seen them happen to friends and family. We see it happen on the news and read stories shared on social media. We all stress about our safety, and our parents worry about our safety as well. We know how important it is to feel CONTINUED >

protected when situations can get scary. We are motivated to bring a product to the market that addresses these safety concerns. We believe that no one should feel threatened, unsafe, or uncomfortable when going about their daily lives. Pocket Punch is just taking off but already we have been able to bring awareness to assault that is taking place daily. We have started a real conversation about personal safety in our community. Many people may try to “forget the tragic events that happen, however danger does not just go away or disappear without talking about it. If we address it, we can understand what needs to be done to make a change. Emphasizing it can help spread awareness in our community and prepare us for the future. We know that people are conscious about what products they buy for themselves and others. Although there are many products on the market, there are no products with all the functions of Pocket Punch. We want to aid the Austin community by giving them a more all-encompassing, affordable, and useful solution to their safety needs. Pocket Punch was co-founded by five female students at the University of Texas. Ashley Raymond, who is pictured above is one of the co-founders that has been with Pocket Punch since it was a class project. WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN? Pocket Punch allows you to take your personal safety into your own hands. Our first product is a 5-in-1 self-defense device. It has knuckles, a refillable pepper spray, a flashlight, an alarm, and a safety point. We are working to release this product to market in the next few months. 10

Austin Life | September 2020

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A SELF DEFENSE DEVICE AS THE NICHE FOR YOUR BUSINESS? As a group of five female college students living in a large city, we all shared the same concerns and anxieties for our safety while walking or commuting alone on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we weren’t the only ones, and there is a constant need for self-defense products. We know crime is a bigger issue than the numbers reflect. Many occurrences go unreported. Our passion for Pocket Punch grew stronger because we each had a real personal connection to this product idea. We believed that existing products in the market were good, but they didn’t suffice - something more all-encompassing could

OUR SKIN IS THE LARGEST ORGAN IN OUR BODY. It often reflects the life that we have had, the life that we are living and can predict what is in the future for us. If we reflect on this it would make sense why a lot of us consciously or unconsciously try to show it if it looks good and hide it if it does not. However, our skin cells regenerate every six weeks, and grows from the inside out, composing the out layer of old and dead cells. Like any other organ in our body, the skin needs nurturing so that it can continue to glow as it use to in our younger years. The basic needs for any organ come from our nutrition as well as the exposure to things that may harm it. Sun exposure, dryness, smoke and many other  environmental debris are 14

known to harm the skin. Trauma and psychological issues, depression and anxiety are also important contributors to our healthy appearance. In contrast, essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, proteins and antioxidants are promoters of growth and health that can reveal our general state of inner health through our skin appearance. Because of these reasons, I believe that taking care of your skin is just as important as taking care of your mind, body and spirit. Any attempt that one can do to promote their skin health is significant. It is not just for beauty or cosmetic reasons why we should attend to the skin needs. Ultimately, if you approach these with healthy measures, you will not only look good but you will feel healthy. I have always had a keen interest in promoting skin health as a part of the overall health of my patients. Over the years, I have developed a plan for our vitamins of Texas, that includes different ways of replacing, supplementing and replenishing our skin with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You can replace these orally or can apply them directly to the skin as it is done in some novel cosmetic procedures. Because of those reasons, we now have joined with Concierge Cosmetics MD services in an effort to advocate for overall health and beauty. I believe taking care of your skin is a measure of wellness and self care, and also a reason to look beautiful and feel youthful. Visit us at: ConciergeCosmeticsMD.com, VitaminsOfTexas.com

ARTIST’S PALETTE

the back yard PROJECT SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS DURING COVID JESSICA LOVE IS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER HERE IN AUSTIN AND A LONG TIME ART COLLECTOR AND FAN. Her creative and expressive mindset created the Back Yard Project. Jessica Love has the unique ability to harness what makes her clients truly unique and bring those traits to life through interior design. As a graduate of Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, she learned the rules of the trade at a young age so that she can now—strategically—break them. Jessica believes in individuality over trends and works to bring her client’s personalities through in each and every design. She is intensely creative and highly adaptable. These traits have built her a loyal clientele over the last 15 years who value her transparency and the ease she brings to the design process. Jessica believes that confidence in our lives begin with a well-designed, carefully thought out home. She brings this sense of empowerment not only to her own clients, but to her community through volunteer positions with local non-profits like Big Brothers Big Sisters. Additionally, she serves on the board for Ten Thousand Villages and partners with Austin Habitat for Humanity as the beneficiary of her annual music showcase, Open Door Showcase, during SXSW. As a huge animal lover with two rescue pups of her own, Jessica has volunteered in the past for Austin Pets Alive! and Barkitecture. She also just launched her own 501c3 called Design Changes Lives, whose mission is to design spaces for children in order to build confidence, empower and improve the quality of their lives. “I feel it is only fair to support our local art community in every single way I can.” The overarching theme is clearly art, keeping artist’s relevant and paid through Covid and showing our audience that art can be more than a canvas or print hanging on your wall. Due to continued social distancing practices and stay-at-home orders, Austin’s public art installations are drawing limited crowds—but Jessica Love is giving local 16

muralists an opportunity to maintain their craft amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The overarching theme is clearly art, keeping artist’s relevant and paid through Covid and showing our audience that art can be more than a canvas or print hanging on your wall. The Backyard Project is a private outdoor art exhibit created by Urbane Design Principal Designer Jessica Love. The gallery will feature six double sided 2’5”x7’ walls painted by local Austin artists and will be permanent fixtures of Love’s personal home. Each artist of The Backyard Project will receive one side of the blank wall as their canvas and will work directly with Jessica Love to express a shared creative vision. Combined, the six walls will be a unique showcase of Austin’s most talented graffiti and fine artists. The Backyard Project is a paid project, and proper social distancing and safety guidelines will be followed for everyone’s safety. “I saw artist friend’s suffering and scared of how they would pay their bills at the onset of Covid. I thought of this unique opportunity to keep them paid and relevant. I hope that in doing this, others catch on and follow suit.” “With any luck, everyone will start their own version of The Backyard Project.” The project is completely funded by myself and Urbane Design. If artists would like to participate they can reach out to me directly at 512-522-6035 or jlove@urbanedesignstudios.com. If anyone is called to donate to this project, I would add more pay to each artist.

2020 JEWELRY TRENDS ESTABLISHED IN 1973, KORMAN FINE JEWELRY IS AN AUSTIN ORIGINAL. For nearly 50 years, Russell “Rusty” Korman built a reputation as Austin’s leading independent jeweler on the bedrock values of honesty, integrity and generously contributing to the community. Hoping to carry on these values, Kat and Larry Stokes approached Rusty about purchasing his business and a few months later, in November 2018, they struck a deal. “As I got to know Larry and Kat, I just felt instinctively that they would continue to operate with the transparency and integrity that are so important to me and our customers,” Russell Korman said of the transition. “Most independent jewelers have gone by the wayside unless a family member will take it over. KORMAN will be here for the next 30 years. I’m leaving my customers in good hands.” 34

Austin Life | September 2020

Rusty began his career selling beads in Austin in 1973 on “The Drag,” which refers to the section of Guadalupe Street that runs along the western edge of the University of Texas at Austin. He eventually opened a bead store called Russell’s, first at Dobie Mall and later at Highland Mall. He sold the business to a friend in 1979 and took a few years off before opening Russell Korman Jewelers, a hybrid jewelry retailer and wholesaler, on Congress Avenue in 1983. Fast forward to today and its beautiful 6,000-square foot gallery where customers can see and hold rare, exclusive goods located on the chic shopping corridor of Burnet Road. With three master jewelers and watchmakers onsite, Korman offers the best and most comprehensive in-house fine jewelry and watch repair in Central Texas. Be sure to check out our bridal jewelry & engagement rings. “We are a full service jewelry boutique,” said Larry Stokes. “Customers have peace of mind when servicing their family’s heirlooms.” This convenience along with personal service, custom design, reserved parking, and friendly sales staff are key to the Korman experience. “We will honor the KORMAN legacy by continuing to give back to the community that has supported it for the last 45 years. We will also bring fresh energy and offer customers a new experience when they walk in the door.” “We love Austin and are excited to be a part of this amazing community,” said Kat Stokes. “We look forward to getting to serve our clients and friends, new and old. We strive to offer classic jewelry pieces but with a bit of Austin flare. Our customers are well traveled and they want to see and experience something different. We hope to cater to all ages and have just the perfect token to commemorate any occasion. VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.
