ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)

We have a beautiful view of the ocean and tons of space. We enjoy breakfast everyday outside by a small fire as migrating whales breech the turquoise waters and we sip espresso. (check out the migrating season because this is a magical thing to see) Then after breakfast we would usually head to the gym for a workout (a little more holiday stress/pounds melt away) Around 10 we were ready to relax a bit at the infinity pool overlooking the sea. There are several pools on premises but our favorite is the Griffin Pool where even in high-season it’s not crowded. There are plenty of upscale and fine dining options in the area including Flora Farms, a farm to table dining experience at its finest, right around the corner from the JW, but our favorite was Café Des Artiste on property. Café Des Artiste creates culinary delights inspired by Mexican flavors prepared in the gourmet french techniques that they describe as French-Mexican fusion, it may seem like an odd pair, but the food and cocktails are truly delicious! After a few days unwinding by the pool and hanging with our friends, we were ready to fully relax and let go of the remaining holiday tension—we went to the spa. Two hours later, after a dip in the cold and hot baths (you must try the cold pool at least once, your legs will thank you) a steam and sauna followed by heavenly deep tissue massages, weren’t even bothered by the thoughts of all the Christmas decor we had yet to put away. We felt AMAZING! The JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa was the perfect getaway, giving us just what we needed this winter and when things return to normal we can’t wait to return! 12

WHEN

CANCER

COMES

CRASHING

INTO YOUR LIFE, YOU QUICKLY LEARN THE STARTLING STATISTICS: + Bladder cancer usually occurs in people over 55 + It’s the fourth most common cancer in men, but it’s less common in women + There will be approximately 81,400 new cases of bladder cancer in the U.S. this year As a mother of three girls who is physically active, rarely sick and doesn’t smoke, I never imagined five years ago I’d be among the population affected by bladder cancer, especially at age 41. One afternoon in the spring of 2015, I noticed a small amount of blood in my urine, and just couldn’t ignore the instinct to get it checked. I had no idea this symptom is often the first of bladder issues, so you can imagine my surprise when an ultrasound in the emergency room showed a tumor in my bladder. After traveling to different appointments over the next few weeks in search of a diagnosis, I received the news I didn’t want to hear. Not only did I have bladder cancer, but it was also aggressive. I was shocked and overwhelmed. One minute, I’m a healthy mom of beautiful girls, and the next minute, I’m a cancer patient with a sense of urgency like never before. Thankfully, I had a plan and followed up with Cancer Treatment Centers of America Atlanta, as they were a source of knowledge and comfort in the initial days following my alarming emergency room visit. My mind was set on integrative care and I quickly determined CTCA was the right place for me.

remove the tumor, but I was told that a tiny amount of the tumor remained in my bladder wall. My urologist, Dr. Scott Shelfo, explained my medical situation and treatment options. Since the tumor was in the wall of my bladder, I had a high likelihood of recurrence. I decided to proceed with removal of my bladder, followed by reconstructive surgery to create a “neo-bladder” using part of my small intestine. Given my age and the life I wanted to live, I felt this was the right approach. The surgical procedure to create a neo-bladder left me with no problems and I’m blessed to say my body works just as it did before my diagnosis. My husband and I recently celebrated 15 years of marriage, and I rediscovered the physical and emotional healing power of yoga. All I wanted was to have a normal life again. CTCA gave me that gift. I encourage any woman to be her own best advocate. If you feel something is off with your body,

AL: TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS. M/CS: This project was about 5 weeks of total build days. From the moment we connect with our clients, communication and building a trusting relationship is our utmost priority. The first step is setting an appointment for a design consultation where we ask tons of questions about what they need or want in their outdoor living space. We create a 3D rendering of the property. From filing for any building permits to the final walkthrough. Our goal is to give you an outdoor space of your dreams.

Tips for Keeping Your Teeth Healthy While at Home From

Dr. Vargas Don’t go to sleep without brushing your teeth You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, it gets rid of the germs and plaque that accumulate throughout the day, and it allows you to have fresh breath in the morning.

Brush properly The deck offers sunny and shady spots for the family to relax. Furnishings by American Backyard

It takes two minutes to do a good job. All the plaque can harden, leading to calculus buildup underneath the gum causing periodontal disease.

Brush your tongue and make sure to floss Helps prevent against bad mouth odor because you can build plaque and germs.

Use a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash Fluoride is a defense against decay. It also provides a protective barrier for your teeth.

Drink more water and limit sugary and acidic foods Drinking water after every meal can help wash out some of the negative effects in between brushes. Sugar converts into acid in the mouth, which can then erode the enamel of your teeth.

Keep in contact with your dentist We are here as part of the healthcare community. Your mouth is the gateway to your body, regular check-ups and a healthy mouth will lessen the impact of other health issues that you may incur.

AL: YOURS IS A FAMILY-OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESS. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE OUR COMMUNITY AS YOUR BUSINESS HOME? M/CS: We wanted to do business in the same community where we live and call home. Many of the homes in these areas are 20 plus years old and at the age that it’s time to look at replacing the original wood deck, so there are many opportunities to meet and do business with our neighbors. Also, people are spending more time in their backyards and want more than the square wood deck of years ago. Helping them create a beautiful outdoor living space not only adds value to their homes, it gives them an additional area to create memories for years to come. Alpharetta.Archadeck.com 770.696.5693
