DURING A LONG DRIVE, IMPATIENT CHILDREN OFTEN ASK MOM OR DAD, “ARE WE THERE YET?” Considering the unwillingness of thousands (or maybe millions) of Americans, during the Covid-19 pandemic, to change and sacrifice their behavior, everyday life habits and enjoyments for their own safety and that of loved ones, friends or even strangers, it looks to me as if the United States is a country and a society of impatient and immature children. Hey kids, “WE ARE NOT THERE YET!!” Speaking of children, as the fall semester is about to commence, our cover story

focuses on the incredible challenges faced by schools, from nursery to university. Will it be distance learning, a hybrid of virtual and in-person or 100% in-person attendance? Administrators, teachers and parents are struggling for answers. They need answers that not only address the health of the children and teachers, but their families when they come home from school. Also, how can they do all of this, keep the students tuned in and not sacrifice the quality of their curriculum? There are no easy answers. Now, back to grown ups. Or are they “grown up”? Can’t or will not wear a mask? Cannot go another day or hour without going to a beach, bar or indoor restaurant? Gotta party!!! Need to attend a demonstration!! Maybe you need to make your point in

STOWELL Learning Center How YOU Can Make This School Year Better For Your Struggling Learner and Your Family

“It’s Really Hard For Any Parent to Admit That Their Bright Child May be Struggling in School…

Especially When You’re Not Sure What’s Really Wrong or How to Fix it” (Quote from a very successful dad of 4 children)

You want to do the absolute best for your child... But when that child is bright and struggling, when that child should be doing better, when you wonder if they’re just lazy, or you wonder if somehow this is your fault, it becomes truly baffling…even “head-scratching.” (Then schools switched to remote sessions, and whatever was standing in the way of progress just got worse.) Now, kids feel defeated, and you as the parent have that feeling in the “pit of your stomach” wondering if you’re doing enough.

There really is hope. There are real and tangible reasons why some bright students struggle in school. And it’s NOT because they’re lazy, it’s NOT because parents haven’t done their part, and it’s NOT because schools don’t teach right. I’m Jill Stowell and for the last 36 years I’ve helped over 10,000 struggling students master the skills that make learning easy… ANY learning.

I’m talking about focused training on strengthening and making efficient the sometimes hidden skills that will allow your child to catch up or even surpass his or her classmates. And I’m talking about making these skills permanent and automatic. These are skills that 70% of the population develop naturally. For the other 30%, these skills can be trained.

We understand that not everyone will choose this option because it involves real investment.

The difficult truth is that schools and tutoring aren’t equipped to correct these kinds of challenges.

Everything we do is because it gets results. Students build permanent skills that lead to lifetime success.

What are these skills?

Our staff are experts at making sessions engaging and fun so that maximum progress is continuous.

I don’t have enough space here to fully explain. But if you want to give your child a real “leg up” in school (and get some peace of mind for yourself), let me encourage you to watch a short 30-minute explanation about these learning skills and why they’re so critical to school and life success. You can find it at:

That goes both for in-person and remote sessions. One more thing - It’s NOT an overnight process, but, unlike tutoring, it’s not a forever process either. We uncover the skills that need work and then build them.

StowellCenter.com/VideoOptin OR scan the QR code on this page

Our goal is that your child find learning easy, AND the burden you feel vanishes.

I don’t mean tutoring. I’m not talking about the same old tired approaches that have been used for decades.

WARNING: I have to tell you right up front that what we offer is a premium service. That’s because we made a decision years ago to do this “right.” We don’t “cut corners.”

Get the critical details here.

A LEARNING CURVE (CONTINUED)

“We’re looking at more fitness classes, even hiking; it’s important that kids are active, and they can be safely active together,” Peters says. As this pandemic continues, Peters advises parents to not get caught up in certain lessons that the students are “missing,” since there are many other lessons to be had from this extraordinary challenge we are all facing, like building resilience, forming closer family bonds, being interdependent and letting go of some things we thought were important. “We need to do everything we can to create unique, fun opportunities for students and adults,” Peters emphasizes. “We need to find ways to lower stress levels. We need to maintain opportunities to safely socialize and learn things outdoors. School should not look the same during this time— it can’t. So, we should all be asking, ‘What can we do to make this situation less stressful on our students, teachers and families? What can we all do to bring more joy?’” The community can help by showing extra compassion and kindness toward teachers and administrators as they make tough decisions and supporting parents in the tough decisions they make, too. “They can support students by showing compassion and kindness for the enumerable disappointments they are facing at critical points in their childhood,” Peters says. There are no easy answers or perfect solutions, she adds. OneSparkAcademy.org

ST. JUDE THE APOSTLE C ATHOLIC SCHOOL At St. Jude The Apostle Catholic School, “we believe that providing structure in the school day online will help optimize student learning,” says Principal Marty Freel. “Our school will take attendance, have live teacher instruction daily and will provide enrichment opportunities that students may be lacking while learning remotely,” he says, adding that these enrichment options include foreign language, physical education and social enrichment opportunities. “Since we are a small school, we can offer much more individualized education for our students than a larger school,” Freel continues. “Many parents are struggling with having their children at home with very little to do or having too much work to do with little guidance. We will have additional resources for our students to have office hours with staff, small group instruction and will provide online resources for parents to help maximize their children’s education while at home.”

LA REINA HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL BEGAN THE SCHOOL YEAR ON AUG. 11 FOR THE 2020-2021 EDUCATIONAL YEAR. La Reina Leadership has spent the months since the county and statewide shutdown, this past March due to COVID-19, diligently refining their online learning instructional model and preparing campus for students to return. “All campus preparations have been made in accordance with national and local health guidelines; the safety of our La Reina community is of the utmost importance to us,” says Laird Wilson, Director of Facilities. With the news from Governor Newsom that Ventura County is on the state’s watch list, La Reina Leadership quickly turned to their online learning model, La Reina at Home. The La Reina at Home instructional model was first introduced as our nation faced a quick plunge into the world of distance learning, March 2020. La Reina teachers pivoted in one day to teaching live, synchronous lessons. “Our teachers and community faced last year’s challenging time displaying the true La Reina spirit. We had a 97.7% attendance rate and 91% parent satisfaction. Our initial AP data shows that our girls scored higher than the world average in every subject they took the tests in; AP Statistics at a 40.5% rate higher than the overall pass rate,” iterates Principal Maggie Marschner. La Reina’s Summer Enrichment program was also held virtually with an increased enrollment from the previous two summers. Principal Marschner shares that despite the success of La Reina’s at-home learning model, they are not slowing down when it comes to refining and growing their program. This includes targeted professional development for teachers, 44

estate planning

FOR UNCERTAIN TIMES TERRI HILLIARD OLSON, ESQ.

A CRISIS, WHETHER GLOBAL OR PERSONAL, CAN SURPRISE US ALL. If you are not prepared, your family will have the heavy burden of handling your estate or financial affairs in the case of serious illness or death. Many people believe they don’t have enough in assets to warrant the need for an estate plan, but if you have a car, bank account, house, life insurance policy and/or retirement account, you need a plan. Some things you can do to benefit your heirs and beneficiaries after your passing and in the event you become ill include the following: 1. MAKE A PLAN. The most common estate-planning mistake is not having a plan. We’re all going to eventually leave this Earth, so it’s important to thoughtfully lay out how you want your personal and financial affairs handled. 2. PROVIDE ACCESS. Provide access to your current planning documents to a family member or trusted agent. Leave a list of your digital assets, passwords and online accounts so they can manage your financial and medical affairs if needed. Give health providers and agents a copy of your health directive, prescription lists and other important details. 3. PROTECT YOUR ASSETS. Various strategies can protect your assets in the event of creditor situations, including bankruptcy, lawsuit or divorce. 4. UPDATE YOUR PLAN. Life is full of changes—births, deaths, marriages, divorces, property acquisitions and others—each needing updating in the estate plan to ensure the assets left behind are protected and preserved as you intend. 56

care, it’s important to determine who will oversee your personal and financial affairs, including raising your children, making health care decisions and handling legal matters. Appoint a power of attorney and/or create a living trust in the event you’re unable to do things for yourself. Make certain you have detailed your health care directives. 6. FUND YOUR TRUST OR NAME BENEFICIARIES. To avoid court intervention and probate when you die, fund your Revocable Living Trust. Make sure your financial accounts and policies have beneficiaries. If you leave assets to young children outside of a trust, their guardian will be in charge of their assets until they are 18, which may not be your desire. 7. CHOOSE AN IMPARTIAL ENFORCER. Spouses and family members may be too personally invested in your estate to handle it impartially. Choose a friend or professional advisor who does not have a stake in your estate to manage the myriad details of carrying out your wishes. 8. DON’T WAIT. Most people recognize an estate plan’s benefits, but often wait

BRAIN ANEURYSMS 101 WITH DR. ASIF TAQI LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE REQUIRES ADEQUATE EXERCISE AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD, AS WELL AS AWARENESS ABOUT POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS, SUCH AS BRAIN ANEURYSMS. In the United States, approximately 8 to 10 individuals per 100,000 will experience a ruptured aneurysm annually. The incidence of unruptured intracranial aneurysms ranges from 0.2% to 10% of the population, though these values are often determined via autopsy studies and can be subjective. Most commonly found in adults, aneurysms can also occur in children. While neurological conditions can be a source of anxiety for individuals of all ages, many people are uninformed about aneurysms. Here, Thousand Oaks leading neurointerventionalist and stroke specialist Dr. Asif Taqi covers the basics.Â

You don’t have to work to be fighting the current all the time with jets in your face.” The iPool’s innovative patented design lets you swim without touching the pool walls, perfect for rehabilitation or serious athletic training and employs a patented dual tether system to optimize results. The unique swim harness consists of a Velcro belt that wraps around the waist and has clips that fasten in the front and is adjustable to fit waist sizes from 22 to 42 inches. An additional belt can be added for waists up to 60 inches. The harness also provides added safety for children learning to swim.
