Bravo Tony!! FEBRUARY IS OUR ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT ISSUE SO I CANNOT THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO START THIS MISSIVE THAN WITH A HUGE SHOUT OUT TO TONY BENNETT. At this point in his life and career he is more than just an icon of 20th century popular and jazz musical artistry. His still considerable musical chops are somewhat of a miracle in terms of aging and ongoing popularity. He is 93 years old and still selling out the house. Just getting decent seats to his concert on January 30, 2020 at the Fred Kavli Theater at the B of A Performing Arts Center right here in Thousand Oaks—no schlep into La La Land needed—was nearly impossible. Ticket agencies doubled and tripled prices for mostly nosebleed seats.

All this for an old guy who can still sing his tail off. One of his secrets is that he practices the Bel Canto style of singing, as do most opera singers. Well he’s Italian, so why not?! He communicates his love for his music and for those of us in the audience who love him back. Oh, and by the way, he is also a distinguished painter whose works are on display in galleries throughout the world…. under his given name, Anthony Benedetto. The following I copied from his website, TonyBennett.com/bio.php, which says it better than I ever could: “Through his dedication to excellence and his insistence on quality, he has become

“AGING IN PLACE”

ARTICLE DWIGHT BROWN

What are the biggest concerns around aging in place? The experience of aging in place is different for everyone, but some common problems can be prepared for. + HOME SAFETY. As we age our mobility suffers and we become less stable; avoiding falls becomes a key consideration for home safety. Other things like better air filtration systems, softer flooring, the heights of beds and toilets, and many other issues that may not be noticeable today can become problematic later. FAVORITE DESTINATION FOR “STAYCATIONS,” DINING, SPA DAYS AND OTHER WELL-DESERVED TREATS. Robin and I discovered the recently remodeled brasserie-inspired Coin & Candor Restaurant, a casual and sophisticated dining experience complete with top-notch local ingredients and wood-fired cooking techniques inspired by Executive Chef Jose Fernandez. We were lucky enough to be invited to a Grgich Hills Estate wine dinner that was held in one of their beautiful private dining rooms. Reviews of wine and food can often become “wonky,” and for my taste, boring. This experience was about food, wine and fun. The Four Seasons hosted, and the two dozen plus guests were happy and ready for FUN. We were not disappointed. Grgich Hills Estate is an iconic Napa Valley wine estate that produces worldclass wine from the heart of the Napa Valley in Rutherford. It was founded by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and Austin Hill in 1977. It is still a family owned winery, not yet gobbled up by the likes of Constellation. Mike is a member of the Vintners Hall of Fame; his Chardonnay was taken to France by President Ronald Reagan for dinner with the President of France, and Mike received the James Beard Award in 2018. This is wine royalty. The Grgich host for the evening, Don Carolan, delivered a rousing verbal history of the winery and insight into the wines that would be poured that evening. Next time you visit Napa, make Grgich Hills Estate a must. Now, on to the dinner. The Four Seasons hosts were warm and gracious. Georg Vaessen, Food and Beverage Manager, and Hannah Ellstrom, General Manager, made us all feel welcome. Executive Chef Coin & Candor Seared Snapper

Jose Fernandez and Chef de Cuisine Jesus Medina outdid themselves.

The First Course was my favorite of the evening: Pan Seared Scallops in an uni sauce, matched with an elegant and minerally 2015 Chardonnay. I could have had seconds (I did on the wine), but on to the next course. The Second Course, Stone Ground Corn Grits, mushroom, Brussels sprouts and white truffle, was a big surprise. I don’t usually like grits, but I sure liked these! White truffles? Yep. The 2016 Merlot was what a Merlot should be—bright fruit, velvet and soft tannins. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon was also served—I bought a half case of that one! Younger and on its way to where the 2007 lives. Finally, dessert! A Mascarpone Mousse, apple confit with orange blossom honey, was gobbled up in about 10 seconds. Who could resist? The dessert wine, 2014 Violetta, named after Mike’s daughter, was perfect served ice cold and loaded with ripe pear and a floral aroma. Stop by Coin & Candor for dinner instead of the same tired places you’ve been going to for years. A brasserie is a new experience for the Conejo Valley. SMILE AND A SONG BRINGS DREAMS TO LIFE

“ONCE UPON A TIME,” AND EVEN TODAY, MANY A YOUNG CHILD HAS DREAMED OF BEING A FAIRY TALE HERO. Joanna Bert is living the dream and helping make girls’ and boys’ storybook dreams come true. Bert is owner of Smile and a Song Princess Parties. She has stepped into the slippers of Cinderella, Snow White and other characters for hundreds of events. Her favorites, though, are Rapunzel and Anna from “Frozen.” “I fit them personality-wise. They’re spunky and slightly awkward. I can be my goofy, fun-loving self,” says the Thousand Oaks resident. Bert also thinks she closely resembles those characters. “They have round faces, freckles and huge eyes. I physically am the most convincing as them,” she says. Bert was an imaginative child, although she had little interest in tiaras and puffy gowns in her make-believe world. “My favorite movie was, ‘The Lion King.’ I crawled around pretending I was Simba, a male lion cub, belting out ‘I Just Can’t Wait to be King,’” she recalls. She has always enjoyed “dress-up,” and Halloween was a favorite holiday. “I couldn’t wear a simple costume out of the box,” she says. “I wanted to be the twins from ‘The Parent Trap,’ a Gryffindor ARTICLE ADRIENNE WIGDORTZ ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY SMILE AND A SONG PRINCESS PARTIES

Quidditch team member from ‘Harry Potter,’ or Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’” Not surprisingly, Bert was a theater kid from the get-go and at the age of 4, wanted to be in musicals. Neither her parents nor older brother shared this interest, but they supported her goals.

ative interests and talents. She had worked for another party company but wasn’t happy with how the business was run. “I had a clear vision how I would make improvements and succeed,” she says. She researched similar enterprises, developed a business plan and—Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!—Smile and a Song was born. It was 2012, and the timing was perfect. With a pantheon of animated princesses popping up on screens and being aggressively marketed, the princess craze was and still is strong. “Characters are popular because they lead exciting lives and go on adventures,” Bert says. “They’re strong and brave. It’s what kids hope to be when they grow up.” She continues: “Fairy tale heroes face challenges. Kids going through tough times—big or small—see they are not alone. We all can relate.” With guidance from her father, who has experience opening small businesses, Smile and a Song has prospered and has expanded to 15 performers.

SMILE AND A SONG (CONTINUED)

Appearances aren’t limited to small gatherings. The troupe has entertained at large corporate and charity functions with hundreds of people attending. “We’re fortunate to be the character company of choice for the Directors Guild of America,” Bert notes. “Last December was our fifth year performing at its annual holiday party.” Other engagements have included a performance by Elsa and Anna at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza’s “Frozen” Sing-Along, a preshow by the Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus” for Street Food Cinema at Los Angeles’ Million Dollar Theatre, and a 30-minute original “Alice in Wonderland” musical for tea parties at the Kimberly Crest House in Redlands. Plus, Alice and the Mad Hatter promoted the Los Angeles Chocolate Festival and Pastry Show on “CBS2 News.” Although the company primarily serves Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, the group has flown twice to Northern California to perform 20-minute scripted, interactive musical shows for parties. Bert credits her passion as key to the company’s success. “It’s a boutique company. I like to keep it small and the quality high,” she says, citing her attention to detail that sets her company apart from others. The costumes and wigs aren’t just off-the-rack. “They’re expensive, labor intensive, custom-made pieces,” she points out. The performers are trained musical theater vocalists who go through a rigorous audition process.

“It’s important they look like the characters, are talented and enjoy children,” Bert explains. “We aren’t just pretty faces doing high-pitched princess voices. And we’re not exact copies of the films. We work hard putting our own stamp on portrayals, bringing these beloved characters to life!” She adds, “That’s why we’re well-loved and highly recommended in the community.” Indeed, online reviews are glowing. It’s not easy owning a business, says the young entrepreneur. But the positives far outweigh the negatives. One of her most special experiences was when she visited a little girl struggling with cancer. The child was shocked to see her favorite character, Merida, from the movie “Brave,” in her home. “The foundation I was representing had raised funds for the family’s first trip to Disneyland. I presented the tickets,” says Bert. “I read my story to her and we talked about how brave a warrior she was, just like Merida.” Bert looked up as the two were singing together and saw the mom’s face full of tears. “That touched my heart,” she says. “I love knowing we impact lives, fostering imaginations and bringing children and their families joy.” In those magical moments, it’s easy to believe … all live happily ever after … THE END. the starting point in my journey—and any journey—is finding the courage to tell your story and change your story.”

With that, he was inspired to do three things: 01 Tell his story to anyone that would listen; 02 Embrace his failures and the lessons he learned from them; 03 Take pride in his accomplishments and validate the dreams from his story to find his fire. This was the birth of The Firestarter. “One of the first human innovations was the discovery of controlled fire. So the very first leaders of our time were the people that started the fire. The shamans, the healers, the elders... they were the firestarters,” he explains. After realizing his own fire, “I remembered to not see my life through the story of my failures. Most importantly, I realized my life’s purpose: lighting the fire within myself to ultimately light the fire in others.” Today, “through my work with individuals as an executive coach, my work with organizations as an innovative storyteller and speaker, my entire life is dedicated to teaching people how to transform their stories so they can live a powerful life. When you can transform the narrative for yourself, you can achieve your wildest dreams; when your organization transforms its story you can literally change the world. As a leader and Firestarter, my job is to light the fire within, help reshape these narratives so people and organizations can light up the world.”

La Reina Visual and Performing Arts Academy FOSTERING CREATIVITY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LA REINA

THE ARTS AT LA REINA OFFER YOUNG WOMEN AN ADDITIONAL PATHWAY FOR FINDING THEIR PERSONAL VOICE. In keeping with the vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame, the arts are an important part of the school’s mission of educating the whole person, nurturing and encouraging them to discover and foster their God-given talents, develop their creativity and imagination and participate in activities that support personal transformation. Some of La Reina’s students desire a strong academic program while pursuing an arts-oriented career. For these students, the VPA Academy was developed to provide the education and experience necessary to progress to both university and professional study. The VPA Academy takes imaginative critical thinkers and expands their abilities to evaluate, organize and produce innovative solutions in our complex world. Opportunities abound both inside and outside the classroom—from solo singing and theatre to graphic design. Students who demonstrate a commitment to the arts and wish to graduate as

members of the Visual and Performing Arts Academy must complete eight semesters of visual and/or performing arts classes while at La Reina. Our graduates are collaborators. They are intuitive, imaginative creators and observers in all areas of their lives. Upon graduation, successful candidates in the VPA program receive the VPA Academy cord and a seal on their diploma. Recent La Reina and VPA Academy graduate Lauren Brown ‘19 shares, “I will forever be grateful for the performing arts program. The faculty helped me develop into the confident performer who is graduating this year. I have become confident in myself both on and off stage. The Performance Arts program has pushed me to become a leader and proud of my capabilities.” La Reina is proud to share that Lauren is pursuing Oklahoma City University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. She earned an academic scholarship and received the highest talent scholarship offered for the acting program. “Our art department works collaboratively to ensure that each student has varying opportunities to explore their talents and creativity while at La Reina. Students are encouraged to find their passion,” says Robin Privat, Visual & Performing Arts Department Chair La Reina’s High School Choir (Regent Choral Artists) made their Lincoln Center debut on February 18, 2019. They performed Frank Wildhorn’s “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” The Regent Choral Artists were part of a 200-strong chorus from around the world supporting an all-star Broadway cast accompanied by the New York Chamber Orchestra. HOT SPOT

AS THE ONLY OFFICIAL AVEDA SALON AND SPA FROM WOODLAND HILLS TO CAMARILLO, THE CHAIR AVEDA SALON AND SPA IS A FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS THAT AIMS TO MAKE CLIENTS FEEL RIGHT AT HOME. “Our clients feel at home here; our staff treats everyone as a member of our family. Every single person that walks into our doors feels welcomed,” says Fernanda Silva, who opened The Chair in 2017 after her local Aveda salon closed its doors and personal life circumstances led her to realize the importance of self-care. “We are always so busy taking care of everything else that we forget about ourselves,” says Fernanda. “I decided I wanted to give back. I wanted to make someone else’s day better too.” Joining forces with senior stylists Janet Orozco and Heather Jasinski and equipped with a Marketing and Communication background and years of experience working with customers at the Spa at The Four Seasons Santa Barbara and Saks Fifth Avenue, Fernanda opened The Chair. “During the three years we’ve been in business, we’ve grown very close to our community,” says Fernanda, a single mother of two young children who appreciates being part of a close-knit circle. “I truly enjoy getting to know the people in our community. We definitely create a bond; it’s so pleasant to keep in touch and catch up. When our stylists make our clients feel beautiful, and they walk away with a smile, that’s when we feel the most fulfilled.”

ill Building Executive Function or Auditory Processing Skills Give Your Child the Competitive Edge You’re Hoping for in 2020? In today’s world, being “very good” isn’t always good enough. And when you think about your school age child, you want them to be at the top of their class.

But what more can a parent do?

There’s an “invisible” set of skills that the very best learners have honed to perfection. These skills give them a very real and defined competitive advantage over their peers.

The tragedy is, almost no one talks about these skills. Schools and tutors don’t work on these skills. Most of the time, they don’t even understand these skills.

For over 35 years, Stowell Learning Center has helped students not just to be GOOD, but to be the BEST that they can be. HOW? We focus on strengthening the skills that make up the ability to learn, to learn quickly, & to learn easily.

Through proprietary, well-researched individualized exercises, we zero in on the exact skills that need work... and then

transforms them...permanently. permanently.
