this is the time to redirect our thoughts toward a lighter and leaner lifestyle and to differentiate between what we need and what we want. As human beings, we all have a certain degree of desire for more possessions and a false sense of happiness with more. This is particularly true with the American lifestyle. So, what can we gain as we navigate this new terrain post coronavirus? That narrowing our scope of possessions and material gain, can in fact, contribute to a healthier and happier lifestyle. If there were ever a time to exchange material possessions for more mental and physical health, that time is now. Life Simplified Pro is delighted and motivated to assist you in this transition to downsize and re-think how you move forward. Potomac Lifestyle | May 2020
“It’s not only about empowering the women themselves who come out to learn new skills
and help build,” says Jeff Dee, Director of Development. “It’s also about helping, by and large, women to move up the economic ladder as they work to build their homes.” The event has been a huge success, particularly over the past four years, so much so that they’ve grown from 20 teams of 10 participants to around 50. Each team tries to raise a minimum of $350 each toward the overall total, but many far surpass that. Real estate company Compass allows their agents to give a portion of their commission to charity and then the company gives an additional $15 through their program, Compass Cares. This year, they have not one, not two, but three teams dedicated to the cause. Vice President Traudel Lange is one of the top fundraisers and had already raised almost $2,500 herself at press time. “I’ve been very excited about it. I don’t have a problem asking for money,” she laughs. “I’ve never done it, but I’ve been involved in many other organizations to raise money, so this comes very naturally to me.” “You’re not asking for much, but it can be a lot of work; the money doesn’t just come to you,” says Dee. In addition to Women Build, Metro Maryland also hosts golf and polo tournaments and a benefit breakfast each year. Between that and the help from grants, individual donors, and profits from their ReStore, they aim to raise two million dollars every year to build homes and help communities. Through the hard work of donors, volunteers, and event participants, “Women Build will be part of making three houses a reality this year,” says Dee. “The most important thing for people to know is that they don’t have to have any skills, or equipment,” he continues. “We will help them and give them a good experience so that at the end of the day, you can walk away saying wow, I built that window or I helped put that doorframe in.” Men can also participate, but Dee says the major draw is women’s desire to help other women. “They want to find a way to have a tangible impact. It’s getting together with friends and physically doing something with their hands, building something, learning a skill, paying it forward. Women Build shows them what’s possible.” So if you’ve ever wanted to be able to say you know how to wield Top fundraiser, Traudel Lange helping build strength, stability, self-reliance and housing through the Women Build 2020 project.

POTOMAC ENTREPRENEUR TURNED TO YOGA FOR FRESH START But she didn’t let the setbacks stop her; instead, she viewed all the uncertainty as an opportunity to follow her passion. “I had been doing yoga forever and one of my friends said I should do yoga teacher training. I decided to go for fun and realized I loved it,” she explains. “I said to myself, ‘I wonder if I can make a living doing this.’” After a long stint of running around teaching at various studios and even out of her own basement, Schenk eventually decided to open her own studio. Park Potomac Yoga opened on July 1, 2019 at 12500 Park Potomac Ave.

Schenk established herself in the community pretty quickly by offering a full range of classes for all experience levels, winning Bethesda Magazine’s “Best New Gym or Fitness Studio” after just two months. Her loyal clientele has been growing steadily ever since. Independently owned, boutique-style yoga studios aren’t hard to find, but Schenk says she’s set herself apart by making sure to cater to beginners, offering a personal connection that helps ease any apprehension. “Everything I’ve ever wanted is wrapped up in this studio. I’m usually sitting right at the front desk. I know everyone’s name. All of my teachers were hand-picked. We truly care and we want everyone to feel loved and safe.” First timers also may not understand how beneficial it is to achieve that mind/body connection. “Yoga really is different; it strengthens your body and lengthens your muscles—you don’t even know what’s happening until one day you look at your abs,” she laughs. “It keeps you in WHILE SOME MAY VIEW YOGA AS A PRACTICE FOR REJUVENATION, DEBI SCHENK ALSO USED THE MEDITATIVE EXERCISE AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR REINVENTION AFTER A SERIES OF EVENTS LEFT HER FEELING LIKE SHE’D HIT ROCK BOTTOM.

WO N D E R FOUR INSPIRING WOMEN FOLLOW THIER PASSION TO HELP OTHERS
DR. DESPINA MARKOGIANNAKIS OWNER SMILES OF CHEVY CHASE
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME A DENTIST? It was career day in the 3rd grade. A doctor came in. He said, ‘All day, every day, I help people smile. It’s arts and crafts in the mouth.’ I said, ‘Wow.’ I love arts and crafts and l love science. It was the best of both worlds. That’s where I started absorbing as much information as dentists had to give me. First it was Career Day and then I quickly got in touch with other doctors through family members and friends. DESCRIBE YOUR MENTOR(S) Dr. Peter Neff took me under his wing at a really young age. I volunteered at his office. He showed me the types of appliances he was making, how he would help people and he always explained the ‘why.’ For him it was really important to explain how he was helping people and why an appliance was used. I started interning in his office and I spent summers interning in an orthodontist’ office, an oral surgery office, and a general dentistry office. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR SPECIALTY? To be the best and to change patients’ lives, I needed to treat patients comprehensively: looking at their entire mouth and understanding why they needed treatments and preventing the cycle of break down. I specialized in advanced general dentistry, implants, crowns, cosmetics and Invisalign. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF YOUR JOB? The ability to change patients’ lives daily. Everything From a small filling on a broken front tooth to a full-mouth reconstruction.

Hilary Anne Fordwich
HIL ARY ANNE FORDWICH FOUNDER OF STRELMARK, LLC
Hilary is Founder of the business development consulting firm Strelmark, LLC. Previously, she headed up global business development and sales for an international firm. She is a sought-after keynote speaker and has addressed the World Congress, National Press Foundation and many others. She has written about business development for many major national publications. Hilary is also an accomplished golfer and golf commentator. She serves on the board and/or holds leadership positions for Easter Seals, March of Dimes, and many others. She has three children of her own and five children as a joint united family. HOW AND WHY DO YOU INCLUDE HUMOR IN BUSINESS? Comedic levity keeps audiences engaged. If you bore people, they tune out. My sessions are highly tactical and practical but you can’t deliver that if you’re boring. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR LIFE IN BALANCE? I always look at how to kill four birds with one stone. For example, if I get together with friends with kids, these would be business people, so we talk about business and do something with the family. Or, if I am watching a movie or the news, there will be some piece or fact that goes into my next presentation. WHAT’S YOUR GUIDING PRINCIPAL? What I do for companies is so rewarding and clients are so grateful. My guiding principal is Onward and Upward: I want to carry on and help everyone around me to be better and move up.

WONDER WOMEN (CONTINUED) Pat Shaver
PAT S H AV E R RETIRED NAVY NURSE Pat was born during World War I. Her family lost everything in the depression but she managed to attend nursing school in her home state of Iowa. She is now 101 years old. AFTER YOU WORKED AS A NURSE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, HOW DID YOU SWITCH TO BECOME A NAVY NURSE? I got a letter from the American Red Cross saying they needed nurses in the Army and the Navy and Airforce. I chose the Navy and they sent me to the South Pacific. We went over on the ship and we were chased by a Japanese submarine for a while. I took care a lot of wounded people from Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, you name it. After about 18 months in the South Pacific, Pat was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. She married a Navy doctor, resigned her commission from the military and had four sons. Pat and her family ended up at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda where Pat volunteered for nearly 40 years, up until 2013. WHAT IS YOUR LIFE LIKE THESE DAYS? I have four sons, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. I am active in the Potomac Republican Women’s Club (PWRC). I go to church and I also read a lot. I like to read new books that are out and I always read the paper and I listen to the news and I enjoy getting outdoors and working in among the flowers and trees.

D R . K E WA N G OWNER ADVANCED ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE HERB CLINIC
WHY DID YOU BECOME AN ACUPUNCTURIST? I have family members who have been doing this for 40-50 years (in China). I grew up seeing how they help people through sickness. That was very impressive to me and inspired me to get into this field. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PATIENTS. I specialize in pain management and immune system support. Chinese medicine is more comprehensive. It is to balance the whole body to heal disease. I have a cancer patient in stage four. His oncologist said he had six to eight months to live but we worked together on better nutrition and diet to support his immune system and lifestyle and he is alive now, two years later. WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING PART? Making people understand what I am doing. It’s a different philosophy from western medicine. The most important thing is for patients to believe in what we are doing so they can receive the treatment better. Also, most people think about injection needles but acupuncture needles are specially designed so it’s like a sting for one second but many people don’t even feel it. WHAT ABOUT HERB TREATMENT? Herbs are especially for immune system support. It can help the stomach or spleen absorb nutrition, or help the liver or kidney detoxify and help more nutrients get through the whole body.

LOCAL’S CHOICE
BEING JUANITA
THE ADVENTUROUS, UNPREDICTABLE LIFE OF JUANITA (AND SHE IS JUST GETTING STARTED!)
JUANITA CONSIDERS HER LIFE UNREMARKABLE AND THINKS THAT OTHERS WOULDN’T FIND IT INTERESTING. She’s wrong. In a moment of clarity and understatement, she said, “I’ve always been the adventurous type,” and added, “I am not known for consistency or predictability.” Today, in her 50s, Juanita lives on her farm in Maryland’s Agricultural Reserve and pursues an unusual set of hobbies, any one of which would keep most people plenty busy. “She said, “Thinking positively is the way to success in any endeavor along with a stiff upper lip … and the ability to laugh at oneself is essential.” Born in England, Juanita moved to the U.S. at 19, in the 1980s, leaving behind her mother and sisters. Her dad had left the family and lived in Pennsylvania with his new family. “I lived with him for one month and then moved out on my own,” Juanita said. She held several jobs in the advertising and legal fields in Philadelphia. By the late 1990s, she had been married and divorced, had a daughter (Morgan, now 24) moved to New Jersey, and studied biological anthropology, applied physics, psychology and English literature in college. Why so many subjects? She simply said, “I found them all interesting.” Shortly before earning a degree in physics and English literature, she had to quit. “I was in the process of divorce and ran out of dosh (money),” she explained.

For half of her decade in New Jersey, Juanita was a stay-at-home mom. In the other half, she was an animal control officer, animal cruelty investigator, a code enforcement officer, a multi-dwellings inspector, and a part-time horse and carriage driver. “I rode all my life, so I knew horses,” she said. When Juanita met her second husband, Ron, she and Morgan moved to Ron’s Maryland horse farm. Juanita and Ron later took custody of Juanita’s nephew, Simon, and raised him as their son. In 2018, Juanita was widowed. Juanita has medaled in 10 marathons and one ultra-marathon. A bicycle enthusiast with several 100-mile rides under her belt, Juanita has participated in many charitable fundraising rides. She earned a mixed martial arts brown belt, and enjoys a good fox chase. In her 40s, she learned to read music and play the piano. Juanita spent a year with her mom in England, while her mom battled cancer. “I was grateful for that time with her,” Juanita said. Juanita’s mom truly understood her daughter and used to say, “Like water off a duck’s back, nothing fazes Juanita and she always ends up smelling like roses.” During that year, Juanita went flying with a pilot friend. “He let me take the controls and said I’d be a natural so I took it up,” she said. Now a registered student pilot, Juanita flies for fun and also volunteers for Pilots ‘N Paws, delivering shelter pets to forever homes. At her farm, which Juanita said she runs with help from “the indispensable Randy Woods,” Juanita cares for a menagerie of 19 rescue animals. When Juanita tried polo, she said,

for which I’m grateful.” Juanita is a member of a walking club and a book club yet that doesn’t mean she’s settling down. She recently took up Transcendental Meditation, is learning to fly fish and is writing a memoir. Ideas for her memoir, she said, are scattered. She finds it challenging to put everything in some semblance of order. And that is quite understandable.

Potomac Lifestyle | May 2020
RACING FOR THE FAMILIES OF OUR COUNTRY’S HEROES For Beverley Bosselmann, the head of the Potomac Hunt Races, horses and racing have been a lifelong passion. Growing up on a 100-acre farm outside of Toronto, she and her five siblings rode horses bareback. Looking back on this idyllic childhood she remembers that “every day was an adventure.” She started foxhunt racing with her father in 1972 and hasn’t stopped since, racing in Canada, Ireland, and then Potomac and North Carolina. (It is important to note that today the purpose of fox hunting is not to kill the fox but only to chase it.) Beverley and her husband Rainer Bosselmann, a stockbroker who emigrated to Canada from Germany, moved to Maryland with their two children Kyla and Kirk in 1990 and bought a 50-acre farm in Dickerson. At that time Beverly became increasingly more involved in the Potomac Hunt Club as a Master of Foxhounds and with the running of the Potomac Hunt Races, taking on the chairmanship of the event in 1999. The annual races consist of a series of steeplechase races, which started in 1952 in Potomac and now takes place on the Kiplinger estate in Poolesville. They

Achieving Optimal Health Conference
THEIR MISSION IS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH ON ALL LEVELS If you’re looking for guidance to manage your anxiety and stress during this coronavirus pandemic, look no further: BB&R Wellness Consulting, the health and wellness company founded by sisters-in-law Doro Bush Koch and Tricia Reilly Koch has what you need. BB&R – which stands for Bright, Bold and Real – was formally launched over ten years ago, but it’s been in the making much longer than that through the founders’ work in mindfulness and healthy living. For over twenty years Doro has found mindfulness to be a powerful practice to cope with the many demands she faced as the daughter and sister of a U.S. president, not to mention the daily stresses and challenges of being the mother of four children. Today, she shares her passion about the power of mindfulness through the BB&R platform.

Sister-in-law Tricia Reilly Koch, also a mother of four, was inspired by her maternal grandmother who introduced Tricia to meditation and the importance of the mind-body connection. Tricia is a certified holistic health coach, a student of ayurvedic living and a nutritionist. She is also the owner of The Georgetown Gourmet Market in Reagan National Airport, which offers healthier food options to hungry travelers intent on eating well. For example, Doro’s most recent blog post has suggestions on how to stay positive during the COVID-19 outbreak, including practicing meditation, reading, working on jigsaw puzzles, going out in nature and checking on elderly neighbors. In addition to their blog, BB&R hosts a popular podcast “Health Gig” which features engaging and insightful conversations with leaders, writers and experts about health and wellness. A few of their many inspiring guests have included golfer and TV host David Feherty, Irish tenor Ronan Tynan, television newscaster Dan Harris and even former President George W. Bush. To date 70 episodes from Health Gig are available at the BB&R website, as well as on iTunes, and anywhere else you listen to your favorite podcasts. BB&R offers a nutrition guidance program, called “The Mind Body Reboot”, which provides hands-on planning tools to help individuals reset routines and acquire lifelong healthy eating habits.
