WOMEN, WE CAN BE A LOT OF THINGS. Bosses, Mothers, Wives, Friends. Being a strong independent woman is one of the most empowering feelings but oftentimes we forget to take a break and support each other. Women supporting women has become the focus of the feminist movement, here in Gilbert there are groups of women striving to build one another up while having a lot of fun! Empowerment is the process of becoming stronger and more confident, and that’s what makes each of these unique groups shine! If you’re looking for a strong group of ladies to join for a glass of wine, grab a movie with, or volunteer to do some good we’ve listed our favorite gal pal groups!

GILBERT GIRLFRIENDS “Girl Power” is a phrase at the forefront of recent headlines and The Girlfriend Connection would like it to keep it that way! Co-Founded by Liz Norwood and Allie Stark in August of 2019, The Girlfriend Connection boasts over 18,000 Facebook members in local groups across 15 states. In a world prone to digital interaction, this on-line group ironically focuses on personal engagement between its members. Activities range from community service projects, to movie nights, to book clubs, to travel and more, each an opportunity for participants to encourage and empower other women in the group and make a real difference in their own lives as well. The Girlfriends Connection’s largest group, “Gilbert Girlfriends”, recently rallied to address the unique needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Members, who affectionately call themselves GG’s, sewed face masks, shopped for the elderly members of the community, and shared supplies to those in need. Through it all the GG’s also managed to have fun with trivia contests, dance lessons, and virtual happy hours. These fiercely loyal and welcoming women of all ages and backgrounds are proving women are stronger together! Join today or find out more at www.TheGirlfriend-Connection.com.

GILBERT CHAMBER’S WOMEN EMPOWERED GROUP What does the power of women connecting with one another look like? When women connect with each other, amazing things happen to our souls, our family and friends, and our communities. When I am able to talk to or FaceTime with one of my closest friends from Minnesota, my head is lighter for having shared our latest struggles with raising kids, my heart is fuller for hearing the latest update on the improving health of her son, and my soul is lifted simply knowing another working mom is experiencing life like I am. When I connect and collaborate with other professional women, I am energized by their enthusiasm and creative ideas, I am more informed about current events from hearing their perspectives, and I am empowered to use my strengths and talents to make a positive impact on my family, customers and community. Women have a unique ability to truly connect with one another when we share our experiences, our stories, and our lives with each other.

KINDNESS KONECTORS Kindness Konnectors are an amazing group whose goal is to encourage and inspire each other while spreading love and kindness in the community. They believe that kindness is the most courageous way to spread positive energy everywhere. Kindness Konnectors focuses on building up and supporting others through overt acts of good. They try to lead by example to put smiles on faces throughout the world. The group does daily acts of kindness to date: they have prepared sack lunches for the homeless, delivered flowers and visits to the elderly and sent cards in the mail to brighten other’s days. Kindness Konnectors suggest that you can take small steps to spread happiness throughout our community. Calling a friend, donate clothes you don’t wear anymore, create care packages for the homeless. The group connects mainly through facebook to share their good works and positive stories to make you smile! facebook.com/groups/kindnesskonnectors

One of my favorite american mexican food is nachos but with all the unnecessary calories of the tortilla chips really add up over time and before I found this recipe I would always have to pass on them in order to maintain a healthy diet! After years of missing out on the delicious mixture of cheese, ground beef and salsa Audrey from We’ve Got You Cover recommended this recipe to bring the joy of nacho’s back into my life! Audrey Heine recommended substituting unhealthy tortilla chips in my nachos of the lighter and tastier plantain chips! This simple swap took hundreds of calories out of my regular nachos! Plantains are rich in potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C which make them a nutritious substitute for flour tortilla chips. They also are high in fiber, are considered a natural antioxidant and are great for supporting heart health! This recipe works great for feeding a hungry family or for snacking at a festive Cinco De Mayo party with friends! These yummy chips will spice up your regular nacho recipe while endorsing a healthy lifestyle!

ZEN ZONE

THE KIDS ARE HOME FROM SCHOOL. You and your husband are now both working from home. There’s a lot of tension that can build up in a short amount of time being stuck inside. This is such unusual place for Arizonans to be in the spring. Creating a space to get away from your hectic life is essential for maintaining a healthy headspace. Your family and work have their own spaces in the house. Why not create a Zen Zone for yourself? If you’re anything like me the best way to unwind after a hectic day is a good book and a fuzzy blanket. Here are some easy decorating ideas that will help you turn your space into the ultimate cozy at home vacation.

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Why stick with one kind of garden? Once you’re a container garden pro, there are tons of different theme gardens you can create all around your home. CLEAN-AIR GARDEN Snake Plant + Spider Plant + Dragon Plant + English Ivy FRAGRANCE GARDEN Lavender + Lemongrass + Mint LEMON GARDEN Lemon Verbena + Lemon Balm + Lemongrass + Lemon Geranium

+

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or — yes, even avocados — you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters.

AT THE TIME I AM WRITING THIS SOCIAL DISTANCING IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO, FULL STOP. But the worry is that if everyone stays home, we won’t just shut down Covid-19, we’ll shut down small businesses as well. Most local businesses have already lost massive amounts of revenue as people self-quarantined, and in Arizona some were mandated to close like our salons, gyms, restaurant dining, & more. With potentially weeks’ worth of lost income, the local businesses that are so integral to the fabric and character of Gilbert may not have the margin to survive. So maybe quit panic buying toilet paper and start panic-buying stuff from the local stores, restaurants and service providers you care about. Here’s a few local businesses that would really appreciate your support right now and have some great creative ways to still purchase things in a safe way.

We love our local community and carry a variety of other local goods in the store. Come and visit! You can also sign up for for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Membership that creates a relationship between the community and their local farmers by purchasing produce before it is harvested. It is a weekly care package of assorted fruits and vegetables to support the farm to table culture!

Buy a gift card. Businesses need cash flow right now, and the easiest way to help them out is to buy some gift cards to use down the road. Lots of shops are offering gift card bonuses right now, so treat yourself. Even better, treat someone else. Email a gift card that lets your nurse friend order some after-work tacos. Donate an art store gift card to your local school. Or stock up on cards from coffee shops, nail salons, yoga studios and bookstores to hand out as gifts down the road.

2.

Get delivery. Hanging out in your favorite diner is not a good look at the moment. Luckily, most restaurants and shops have stepped up options like delivery or curbside pickup so you can minimize contact with humans. If you can afford it, commit to ordering in a few meals this week.

3.

Shop local online. Lots of local shops keep at least some inventory available to order online. That boutique

bag you’ve been eyeing? The great piece of local art? Now’s the time to treat yourself. This is a perfect time to support indie bookstores, too. Many of them have closed to the public but are offering free shipping, curbside pickup and local deliveries.

working fewer hours, they’re getting fewer tips from their nonexistent customers. If you can afford it, make someone’s day with a massive tip. Schedule a service for later. COVID-19 has created the ultimate cancel culture, but all those missed reservations and skipped services are stressing out local workers. If you can, schedule work with a cleaner, a painter, a plumber, a contractor or a salon. Simply knowing that work is coming their way can alleviate some anxiety and make a big difference in helping them weather this
