GIVING BACK
"NO PITY GOING ON AROUND HERE" ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY GERRY MELENDEZ “I WILL NOT LET THIS PANDEMIC DEFINE ME. And I won’t stop donating or giving back to our community,” declares the bravely defiant auto dealership owner and Lake Murray humanitarian, Bill McDaniels. “I respect fear, but I do not live in fear, because when you trust in God, He never forsakes you. We chose to move away from fear, and by doing so, fear is becoming less a problem. We’ve been blessed, and haven’t had to lay off any employees.” This owner of six auto dealerships in the Columbia and Charleston region told his staff they were going to “fight through this thing together, and put it in their rear-view mirror.” As a result, Bill and his crews jumped on the optimism gas pedal. Bill recently applied this personal operating logic to an annual golf fundraiser he hosts, which this year would have been the 29th one he held in Columbia. The annual combined McDaniels Golf Classic and Gala benefits the Lexington Medical Center Foundation to fight cancer. This year’s golfing events specifically were going to pay for those locally underinsured, patients who could not cover the costs of tests or treatments for melanoma, colon, breast or lung cancers. When the COVID-19 teed off a public lockdown, Bill says they attempted to return the financial donations already submitted for the fundraiser. However, donors insisted that the group keep their donations. Bill admits it was amazing. The donors’ collective effort led to raising $244,565 for an event that couldn’t even physically happen! Last year, Bill says the 2019 Golf Classic raised $675,000 in gross receipts. “The power of this fundraiser is that the hospital pays the salaries of the foundation staff, so that every dime from loyal supporters goes straight to the care of local patients.” “I love this community and what it stands for,” says Bill, who donated to 14 different charities last year. 14

BILL MCDANIELS: CHEERS TO THIS BUSINESSMAN, PHILANTHROPIST AND COMMUNITY LEADER
“ I r e s p e c t f e a r, b u t I d o n o t l i v e i n f e a r, because when you trust in God, He n e v e r f o r s a k e s y o u .” He says it was honestly sad not to hold the Golf Classic, which is the most successful and longest-running one in Richmond County. “We set the bar really high, and I will fight against cancer as long as there is breath in my body because it’s a health danger that can affect anyone and everyone. I’m so proud to be part of the Lexington hospital’s effort,” he adds. “The hospital is truly a treasure for this area.” Bill also is leading the way to adjusting how to continue supporting other causes during this unusual, global health crisis. annual Bark To The Park event, they held a virtual Bark Around The Block in various neighborhoods that was shared live on social media. “I’m just not stopping,” wages Bill, who also enabled a million-dollar parking lot extension to occur at his congregation’s GraceLife Church. “We’re not sitting around; we’re finding different ways to move forward.” Steps taken at the McDaniels Auto Group locations include disinfecting the entire buildings, using steering wheel covers and placing plastic on seats when service work is done, cleaning cars’ interiors, posting signs about where customers can sit outside the buildings, and doing the majority of payment transactions online and with electronic signatures.

Bill says he’s blessed to work with some of the hardest-working people he knows. They say the same about him. To discover more about the Lexington Medical Center Foundation, call 803.791.2540 or email LMCFoundation@lexhealth.org. MORE ABOUT BILL’S BACKGROUND Bill McDaniels, president, owner and founder of McDaniels Automotive Group, is the event sponsor of the McDaniels Golf Classic. He’s worked in the retail automotive industry since 1969. He’s also a licensed general contractor in South Carolina and North Carolina. An avid community philanthropist, Bill has raised more than $4.5 million for the community through his support of charitable events, including the McDaniels Golf Classic. He received numerous honors for community service, including Fundraiser of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Order of the Palmetto by Gov. Nikki Haley, and the Silver Leaf Award by Lt. Governor Andre Bauer. Bill lives in Elgin, and enjoys playing golf in his spare time. CHAIR OF MCDANIELS GOLF CLASSIC: SUZANNE PUCCI Suzanne Pucci, president of Stanley Steemer of the Midlands, currently chairs the McDaniels Golf Classic, a position she has held for the past 11 years. In addition to her work at Stanley Steemer, Suzanne actively serves her community. She’s a member of the Lexington Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors and past president of the Columbia Executives & Owners Association, having served on the organization’s board of directors for five years. She’s currently a member of South Carolina’s Small Business Regulatory Review Committee, and a past member of the board of directors for the Family Shelter in Columbia. Suzanne enjoys playing golf and staying fit, and is an enthusiastic University of South Carolina sports fan. CityLifestyle.com/LakeMurray

7 Healthy Grilling Tips
GRILLING CAN BE A WONDERFUL WAY TO ENJOY A VARIETY OF HEALTHY FOODS ALL SUMMER LONG, BUT STICK WITH THESE TIPS TO KEEP IT NUTRITIOUS:
1. Flavor without added salt. Marinate or add herb/spice
blends to meats to add incredible flavor, with the bonus of using less salt. All that’s needed is ½ cup of marinade or 1 tablespoon of spice rub for each pound of food.
2. Try fruit on the grill for a sweet treat. Hard fruits, such as apples, pineapples, and peaches, do really well on grills. The

CULINARY CREATIONS (CONTINUED) 3. Use healthier oils in place of butter. Brush meats and veggies with olive, canola or avocado oil. Healthy fats keep people satisfied, making it less likely to reach for seconds. 4. Keep it simple and let the grilled flavor shine. No need to add extra sugary or creamy sauces to dishes. By limiting excess highsugar, high-sodium sauces, it will slash calories and fat all in one, without sacrificing taste. 5. Try whole grain buns. Switching to 100% whole wheat buns adds extra fiber, delicious texture and vitamins. Need to watch the intake of carbs or calories? Try a lettuce wrap burger or an open faced sandwich. 6. Stick to the right portions. The size of protein should ideally be about the size of your palm, or 3 to 4 ounces. Fill one-fourth of plate with grilled protein then fill half plate with non-starchy vegetables. The remaining fourth of the plate should be starch or grains, such as a sweet potato or brown rice. 7. Don’t forget veggies. Make colorful vegetables the highlight of your feast – the darker the color, the more nutrients! Try eggplant, zucchini, onion, bell peppers, squash, mushrooms, asparagus, corn on the cob, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. Simply wash and chop up vegetables, brush with olive oil, sprinkle on some herbs and spices, and fire it up. Aim to fill half of each plate with non-starchy vegetables.

OPEN HOUSE
New Senior Community Awaits WESTMINSTER MEMORY CARE SLATED TO OPEN SOON IN LEXINGTON 28
Lake Murray Lifestyle | June 2020
ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON
BALANCING FREEDOM AND SUPPORT IS VITAL TO ANY PLAN FOR ASSISTED SENIOR LIVING. Westminster Memory Care Lexington is about to provide a brand-new, unique all-memory-care-community to the local region, one that specializes in dementia interactive care, says its executive director Cynthia Hill. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by an open house, is planned for this month or next, depending on the timing of final operational permits. Westminster Development constructed this new 48-unit, luxury senior living community at 886 Park Road in Lexington specifically to serve seniors with memory loss through specialized programming, while allowing seniors to live as independently as possible in a safe and caring environment. Cynthia states that Alzehimer’s Association statistics indicate someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds. “We are the only community in our area with certified nurse assistants and licensed nursing staff providing care 24/7,” she says. “The nurses will administer all of the medications.” The building basically consists of two, identical wings -- each comprised of 24 private rooms. Cynthia says each room encompasses 375 square feet, and that they can accommodate spouses. Laundry and housekeeping are handled by the facility’s staff.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED) The center’s team is especially delighted with the use of natural light and open interior design plan throughout the new center, which was developed to provide helpful and calming physical cues for residents. Cynthia says their fish aquarium will offer a peaceful ambiance to the den and living room space; that’s where the center will host guest speakers. She says the activity area has a big screen television, as well as recliners and tables, and will be where they conduct exercise, do puzzles, play games and finish arts and crafts. There will be plenty of outdoor space for residents to enjoy, including a sail-covered area for soaking up a bit of filtered sunshine as well as an enclosed walking trail. They also are planning a bird aviation area. An on-site hair salon/barbershop will be contracted and offered, creating opportunities for spa-like experiences for residents. Art therapy is an important service provided by Westminster Memory Care’s management company, Avenir Senior Living Options. Cynthia says they also hope to forge partnerships with local art students and school teachers, who can create individual masterpieces with the residents or host art shows. Additionally, Westminster will offer respite care for family caregivers who need assistance during travel times, vacations, business trips, medical situations or brief breaks. Cynthia assures that the building also contains a hurricane-safe room with its own backup generator. “For families, at the end of the day, everything’s about care. And we’re passionate about the level of care we provide. All of our amenities are wonderful, but they are icing on the cake. Our dedicated care is the cake,” Cynthia says. This new care center is a $13.5 million investment, Cynthia says, adding that the facility offers at least 40 jobs to the local community. Leanne Ballentine is the center’s new marketing director. Matilda Hill was hired as the business office manager. They also will employ a full-time activity director. Sous chef Tony Jackson will serve as the center’s chef, complete with running an interactive kitchen in the dining room. When possible, he plans to prepare food, snacks and desserts, such as banana pudding, with the residents. He also plans to cook and create dishes in front of them when he can. Cynthia says she and her managerial staff have a combined seven decades of experience in the health care industry. She adds that the facility’s entire staff is trained in dealing with dementia. “The lives of our owners and investors also have been personally affected by dementia, and they wanted our new center to have all the extras. That’s another reason we have adjustable lighting and lavender therapy,” she adds. Living by and working from the mantra “what remains is far more important than what is lost,” Cynthia promises they will care for residents by making them feel meaningful, successful and valuable while serving them with accountability, compassion and integrity. 803.356.7507 WestminsterMemoryCareLexington.com 30
