NATHAN ZDILLA WINS CPAAC GIFT BASKET A Sedona travel gift basket from CPAAC, Citizens Police Academy Association of Chandler, valued at more than $1,200, is in the hands of the winner, Nathan Zdilla of Chandler. CPAAC comprises alumni from the Chandler Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy class who want to give back to the Chandler Police Department and act as goodwill ambassadors to the community.

Zdilla purchased the winning ticket at a recent annual Chandler Public Safety Fair, a partnership between Chandler police and fire departments.

The basket was a fundraiser for CPAAC, and raised needed funds for the nonprofit’s activities.

COVID-19 has affected just about everything, but small businesses have been among the hardest hit.

At the same time, small business owners have risen to the challenges they have been faced with, working to adapt and reinvent themselves to survive. Amoroma Productions, an innovative video company based in Chandler, has begun working on a documentary to highlight the resiliency of the state’s more than 553,000 small business owners who employ approximately one million Arizonans.

To capture small business stories across different industries, Amoroma is searching for a diverse group of small business owners who are willing to share their moving stories in the documentary, which will also include perspectives from Arizona’s public and private community leaders.

From now until July 17, Arizona-based small business owners are encouraged to share a short video or written submission about how their business has been

Stroll Through a Japanese Garden Feel serenity envelop you as you step

onto the grounds of the Japanese Friendship Garden, named RoHoEn. Located in the heart of Phoenix, this place of beauty and tranquility was created through a partnership between the City of Phoenix and its Sister City of Himeji, Japan. It features an authentic 3.5-acre stroll garden, with a tea garden and tea house. There are stone footbridges, lanterns, flowing streams, a 12-foot waterfall, and Koi pond with more than 300 fish.

From October to July, the destination holds an authentic tea ceremony one Saturday per month. Bookings usually sell out well in advance, but now is a perfect time to Japanese Friendship Garden.

Visit a Bat Cave

Yes, Phoenix has its very own bat cave. Every sum-

mer since the late 1990s, several thousand Mexican free-tailed bats and canyon bats use the Maricopa County Flood Control Tunnel near 40th Street and Camelback Road to roost (they are usually in the eastern and western ends of the tunnel). They begin arriving in Arizona in early March and can be seen through October, though the best times for viewing are in July and August when the young begin to fly. Be there just prior to sunset to watch them emerge. AZGFD.com

2. Start with a thin layer of whipped cream on the bottom of a springform pan (determine the size by how large or small you want your icebox cake to be). Then top with an even layer of chocolate (or your favorite kind of ice cream).

3. For the next layer, top with an even layer of cookie crumbles, cake crumbles, chocolate candies, crushed graham crackers or anything else you want to layer your cake with.

4. Continue with layers of whipped cream, ice cream and toppings until you have reached the top of your pan.

5. Refrigerate at least 4 hours, top with more cookie crumbles or chocolate sauce, slice and enjoy!

ARIZONA’S PREMIER MULTISPECIALTY MEDICAL CENTER WHEN CHANDLER NATIONAL LITTLE LEAGUE (CNLL) HAD TO CANCEL THE SEASON DUE TO CONCERNS ABOUT COVID-19, HUNDREDS OF LOCAL CHILDREN WERE DISAPPOINTED. “The kids had been drafted, had practices, then went on spring break,” recalls local dad and coach John May. “Once spring break was over, things had been shut down.”

May’s son Brodie is 12, and plays in the Majors category of Little League. While the family sheltered in place during quarantine, May began to realize that his son’s—and all of the players’—entire season would be lost. For many of the children in the 11-12 age category, this would be their last season in Little League, so when Governor Ducey allowed the state to slowly open back up, May got to work on trying to recoup the lost season.

“I have the skillset of organizing and raising funds, so once it was obvious that there

was a desire for this to happen, I felt like we hard to work as hard as possible to make it real,” he says.

May and other parents, coaches, and volunteers polled families of the 11- to 12-yearold players, and it was obvious that the kids wanted to hit the field.

“Brodie and his friends wanted to have fun with their buddies, and this is the last time that I would have this experience with him as a coach,” May shares. “This is many of these kids’ last chance to play organized baseball.”

To help parents with the costs, May raised over $11,000 from local donors and community

organizations.

grew to consist of 122 kids split into 10 teams. The revamped season started on June 1 and included 25 fast-paced days of practice and games.

“The new league has 10 teams comprised of 11- and 12-year-olds and they remained on their CNLL team that drafted them to start the season,” explains local resident Greg Sanchez, who was also involved in the effort. “The same coaches that drafted the players and had already practiced together for over a month all remained intact. It wasn’t an easy feat to get this accomplished and it is people like John May, who go above and beyond, that make our Chandler community so special. As a former board of directors member of CNLL, a former coach in CNLL, and a dad of four sons who have all played for over a decade in CNLL, I have a huge appreciation for what John accomplished for these families during this time.”

To make the shortened season happen, there were many hurdles—such as scheduling fields, coordinating busy schedules, and more. The teams played the games at Cactus Yards and Snedigar Sports Complex.

May says that, while he was at the helm, it was a community effort.

“I’d really like to thank Eric Bell with USSSA baseball; he has supported us all of the way and has helped provide the liability we need to allow these kids to play,” May shares.

With the novel coronavirus still a concern, May says that he provided Governor’s Ducey’s guidelines to players, coaches, and their families, and they took all of the precautions they could. They also did their best to help players stay safe in the heat.

“Despite everything going on in this world, on opening day in June, it was obvious that the kids were happy to be out playing baseball, and the parents were happy to be out watching them,” May says. “I hope that kids take away from this time period how to be resilient, how to not give up, and the importance of social interaction—of having each other.”
