“Renee is awesome. She helped us transition into a new house in a new state with no problems. When we had to sell a year later, we were able to sell the house to the first person who looked at it for full price. By utilizing a stager, we were able to make the home stand out from the many others like it for sale. We have used many real estate agents over the years, and Renee is the most efficient of all and a pleasure to work with. She is strategic in her approach and is always resourceful no matter what problems arise. Highly recommend..”

COMPLETING THE 2020 CENSUS IS A PATRIOTIC DUTY The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories. In midMarch, homes across the country began receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. The invitation guides residents on how to respond for their home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. In August it was announced that more than 40% of residents nationally had not yet completed the census, done every 10 years to determine population counts for allocation of federal monies and apportionment of members of Congress for each state. More than 14,000 enumerators (census takers) in Northern Illinois are now visiting local

MARGE GERRY WAS HAPPY TO TALK WHEN I CALLED. The ongoing pandemic has limited the things she loves to do—traveling, entertaining, and visiting friends. These were the activities that she and her husband, Bob, enjoyed most. After Bob died earlier this year, Marge takes solace in remembering 50 years of marriage and exploring the world with Bob. A few years back the couple from Hawthorn Woods decided that after 30 years it was time for a kitchen upgrade. This was the gathering space for spending time in retirement after careers as educators in Barrington and Wheeling. The kitchen was where they played cards, entertained guests, and prepared meals together. The Gerrys sought the expertise of Kerry and John Briggs (Briggs Design Associates, Inc.) of North Barrington. As the Briggs team started the design process they found that the Gerrys had lots of ideas on what they wanted: an uncluttered, bright space with a large window to enjoy their wooded lot; lowglare lighting; and cabinetry that’s “contemporary, sleek, and high gloss.”

RENOVATE & REFINE
A BUILDER’S JOURNEY FROM PENNSYLVANIA TO COLORADO TO NEW MEXICO AND FINALLY SW LAKE COUNTY, BRAD WILLIAMS CRAFTS CUSTOM REMODELS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON
BRAD WILLIAMS, OWNER OF WILLIAMS DESIGNERS & BUILDERS, IS A LONGTIME RESIDENT OF HAWTHORN WOODS AND AN ACCOMPLISHED CONTRACTOR WITH EXPERIENCE IN HOME BUILDING, ADDITIONS, EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS INCLUDING KITCHENS AND BATHS, AND MAJOR REMODELING. With well over 100 client projects, his work was featured on an episode of HGTV’s “New Spaces” program. Williams is proud that over 90% of his business comes from past client recommendations and referrals. Customer comments on Williams’ work are enthusiastic and grateful. For example: “Brad Williams is not just a builder. He’s the best contractor we’ve ever worked with in terms of quality, responsiveness, creativity, and ideas.” On the summer day we met, Brad and his lovely wife, Shari, carried a sequence of striking furniture pieces and other skillfully-made items to the (pandemic-approved) outdoor air of their patio. Each handcrafted piece was on display under the sun for a photo shoot, all unique in their quality and design. 18

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED) Woodworking in his home shop is how Williams unwinds. His work with clients designing and building truly memorable interior spaces and homes isn’t complete until he presents the happy homeowners with a thank-you gift he made that becomes a cherished possession. Each is a reminder of the partnership created between the family and their contractor. Williams caught the building bug while growing up Pennsylvania. “I always had an affinity for working with my hands and building things,” he said. When he was 10 years old his parents designed a new home and hired a contractor to build it. “I went there almost every day to watch, fascinated to see the process of construction from excavation and framing through all the finishing phases. I became friends with the carpenters, who let me pitch in. I guess you could say I was hooked on home building at an early age. I spent every bit of my allowance on whatever tool I could buy. I soon started building tree forts, including a 2-story one with decks and ladders.” He attended a small liberal arts school before transferring to West Virginia University to earn a degree in forestry. His education also included part-time and summer work with contractors where he learned a variety of skills in the building trades. After graduation there were few opportunities for a local forestry career, so Williams and a friend decided California was the place they’d want to be, so they loaded up the car and they moved to... Colorado. “My love of the mountains was just too strong to continue the trip to California,” he said. Construction was booming in towns like Breckenridge, Dillon and Silverthorne, and Williams furthered his career in construction. Lucky for him, it was at the Old Dillon Inn where he met Shari; they later married at Chicago’s Knickerbocker Hotel. An opportunity to relocate to Ruidoso in the Sierra Blanca mountains of New Mexico followed, providing Williams opportunity to move up to construction management. After a few happy, successful years there, a recession drove the young family to Chicagoland to be closer to Shari’s family. Settling in Hawthorn Woods in 1992 allowed Williams to launch his own company designing and building custom homes, room additions and remodeling upgrades. Every new client relationship starts the same way: Williams meets with the family, walks through their home, discusses their needs and wishes, crafts a plan, determines a budget and timetable, and personally manages the process through to successful completion. While he doesn’t work with his hands at construction sites as he once did, he revels in retreating nearly every day to his home woodshop to build. “He’s in there more than he’s in the house,” said Shari. A popular gift Williams creates for customers is a charcuterie board, marked as are all the items with his personal design stamp. He proudly noted, “People don’t throw them away. You handcraft a gift, and people appreciate them.” His woodworking repertoire also includes coffee tables and Mahjong game cases. A masterfully crafted inlaid case he surprised Shari with to perfectly house her mother’s cherished Mahjong set is now proudly displayed (and used) in the family home. For more information, call Brad Williams at 847.913.3771, or visit BCWilliamsConstruction.com. 20

PRIMROSE SCHOOL INSTITUTES STRICT HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS TO PROTECT EARLY LEARNERS, FAMILIES AND STAFF
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: THIS SUMMER LOCAL PUBLIC-SCHOOL DISTRICTS CATERWAULED FROM ONE RE-OPENING PLAN TO ANOTHER, EVENTUALLY DETERMINING TO START THE FALL SEMESTER WITH DISTANCE LEARNING. There is no such thing as a onesize fits all model for schools and businesses locally. We filed this story at deadline about how Primrose School of Long Grove was dealing with the pandemic. 24
SW Lake Lifestyle | September 2020
Melanie Detloff walks with son Max to start the school day.
Their story shows how one team of administrators and staff, along with a willing group of parents, have leaned into the challenge of protecting the health and safety of children, families and staff. According to the co-owners of Primrose School, Jenny and Rich Wierzchon, enrollment has started to tick back up with a new classroom set to open in September. To prepare this story the Wierzchons provided answers via emails. Photos were taken at a distance so that no contact was necessary with children, parents or the staff of Primrose School. Like all families and staff, the photographer submitted to a temperature check and provided answers to a series of health questions. SW LAKE: TELL US ABOUT THE DIFFICULTIES YOU’VE FACED DURING COVID-19? Jenny Wierzchon: Frankly, this has been the largest challenge to our school since we have opened in 2015. With each health and safety decision we make, we are looking at the impact that it will have on our students, their families and our staff members. There is conflicting information available, and we know that our choices have an incredible impact. SWL: YOU’VE INSTITUTED A LOT OF NEW PRACTICES THAT INCLUDE DAILY TEMPERATURE SCANS, WEARING MASKS, CHANGING THE SHOES OF CHILDREN, MORE HANDWASHING AND USE OF SANITIZERS, FACILITY CLEANING AND DISINFECTING PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT AFTER EVERY RECESS. WHAT HAS BEEN THE REACTION TO YOUR NEW PROTOCOLS BY THE FAMILIES YOU SERVE? Rich Wierzchon: Our families have been wonderful! They understand that all our policies and protocols are to keep their children and their families safe. They are very comfortable with the choices we have made to protect the health and safety of their children. SWL: HOW HAVE THE STUDENTS REACTED? Jenny: Our students are so happy to be back to school with us. They have a sense of normalcy and routine. They are with their friends and their teachers. They have quickly adapted to the changes and they see this as normal.

Company has been as helpful as they can, given the numerous localities they work with. They are providing up-to-date guidelines and best practices. They have helped to source items that we may not have found otherwise, such as childsized disposable face masks.

SWL: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE “NEW NORMAL” AT PRIMROSE SCHOOL? Jenny: All our staff members have returned to work with us and were excited to be back with the students. Our students are happily returning as soon as their families are comfortable. These are very personal choices that families are making based upon their family’s individual circumstances. Primrose School of Long Grove periodically hosts weekend open houses. They have instituted an extensive list of health & safety protocols available to review upon request. FINDING A H A P P Y D E N TA L HOME YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR SAYS IT’S A BLESSING TO BE PART OF A DAUGHTER-MOTHER DENTAL PRACTICE
AFTER WORKING IN OTHER PRACTICES, IN 2018 DR. AGGIE IWASZCZYSZYN OPENED HART DENTAL IN BARRINGTON. She was motivated to start her business because she sees “patients as people, not dollar signs. I believe in doing what is right for the patient and not what is right for the bottom line.” SW

YOUR
CAREER CHOICE? Dr.

Iwaszczyszyn:
Honestly,
because my mom is a dentist and my dad is a software engineer, I wanted something different and thought a lot about teaching. Through science classes at Lyons Township High School, the STEM field became more interesting. I realized by doing something in medicine I could help people and make a tangible difference, just like in teaching. I went to Loyola University, graduating Cum Laude with a B.S in Biology. I got my dental degree in 2016 from the College of Dentistry at University of Illinois-Chicago. 28

SWL: WHAT DISTINGUISHES YOUR PRACTICE? Dr. Aggie: We are dedicated to listening to patients. We want their feedback every step of the way. We tend to be a friendly, talkative bunch, but some people want a calm and quiet environment. We see kids as young as 6 months old and patients in their early 100s. A lot of people are very anxious and have not seen a dentist in years. We invite them in, make them feel comfortable, and help them find their happy dental home. SWL: DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR? Dr. Aggie: We are blessed to be a daughter-andmother team. My mom, Dr. Iwona Iwaszczyszyn, is a TMJ, facial pain and headache expert. People see her from all over, even from out-of-state. We offer Bioclear, a revolutionary way to brighten a smile without shaving down any healthy tooth structure. No more veneers or crowns for healthy teeth because we are enamel superheroes! SWL: HOW HARD WAS THE COVID-19 SHUTDOWN? Dr. Aggie: We had the hardest time turning people away whose emergencies were deemed not serious enough by the authorities. Since we got the green light it has been amazing! We missed our staff and patients and are blessed to be back. We have added many more precautions to already-strict OSHA protocols, including HEPA 99.9% filters in the waiting room and each operatory, UV light sterilization at the end of the day, face shields and N95 masks. Patients wait in their car until their appointment, wear a mask inside and use a hand-sanitizing station. We give tours for anybody wanting to see the precautions we are taking during these uncertain times. SWL: HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME? Dr. Aggie: Being a new entrepreneur, free time is hard to come by. Plus, I’m a newlywed! Hart Dental supports WINGS, Mission of Mercy and the Alzheimer’s Association. My grandmother is battling breast cancer, so we also support Susan G. Komen and Know Your Lemons. Learn

By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. H E A LT H Y SKIN Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

PARTING THOUGHTS
My Journey of Personal
D i s c o v e ry ARTICLE ALLISON DREDGE PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON
I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ATLANTA ON FRIED CHICKEN, GRITS AND “GONE WITH THE WIND.” In school I said the Pledge of Allegiance and learned about the American Dream. If I worked hard, applied myself, got a good education and a good job, I could buy a house and retire with a nice nest egg. In my family I’m the only one to leave the South. After raising my children on the North Shore for 25 years, and then moving to Barrington, I heard the term “white privilege” for the first time recently. In “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” Peggy McIntosh writes about “unearned advantages that white people have relative to people who are nonwhite. It is the absence of suspicion and other negative reactions that white people experience.” I have a life with many advantages. Some I earned, some not. I see now that the American Dream is not accessible to all. Thinking about what I was taught on race in America, I realize there were big gaps following the Civil War: things like Jim Crow Laws, mass incarceration, white flight and redlining. The more I dig, a picture emerges that paints something entirely different for people who aren’t white like me. History is even more personal since I descended from slave owners in the early 19th century. I am sad and upset about my link to this part of the American story. Further discovery revealed that another ancestor bought 58 slaves, a few at a time, to help them gain freedom in the North. There is so much I don’t know about the racial issues we face today but I am determined to relearn American history, educate myself about racial problems and find ways to use my white privilege to help change things.
AFTER LEARNING ABOUT MY FAMILY’S PAST AND TRULY UNDERSTANDING MY PRIVILEGE, IT’S TIME NOW TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
