MATT SIBBING

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PARK AND WHY? One of my family’s favorite parks is Rocky Mountain National Park. From white water rafting to hiking and horseback riding, there are limitless outdoor activities to do with your family. The scenery and wildlife are amazing as well. If you enjoy nature, this location can’t be beat.

We Understand Commitment

WHAT TOPS THE LIST OF PLACES YOU HAVE TRAVELED? I have been fortunate enough to travel to a few wonderful locations, but nothing beats the trip I took to Queenstown, New Zealand with my wife a few years ago. My parents were able to join us, and we enjoyed probably one of the most beautiful places on Earth. From touring Milford Sound to exploring the surrounding Queenstown area, it was definitely a trip we will remember forever.

HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY CELEBRATE EARTH DAY? Each year in the spring, my family and I like to get our fingers, knees and shoes a little dirty by raising a garden. We find joy in working in the cool soil, planting the seeds and nurturing the newly sprouted plants a few weeks later. Fighting with the unwanted plants (weeds) until harvest and negotiating with the wildlife and insects for a share of the crop, are how we keep connected back to Mother Earth. WHAT TOPS THE LIST OF PLACES YOU HAVE TRAVELED? The U.S. Virgin Island of St. John is a tropical island paradise owned by the U.S. Park Service. My family and I stayed at Caneel Bay, which has since been destroyed by hurricanes about two years ago. We stayed at what was formerly a Rockefeller estate. What a beautiful place!

FAVORITE PARK AND WHY? Vacations and recreational travel are my favorite activities. I enjoy everything from a stay-cation to venturing to special places across the country and even the world. It’s all about making fun memories with friends and family! WHAT TOPS THE LIST OF PLACES YOU HAVE TRAVELED? There are quite a few cool parks throughout the Kansas City area. And, of course, New York City’s Central Park is one of the most unique settings right in the middle of Manhattan. That said, I’m frankly more of a golf course person than a park person. I’m looking forward to getting some rounds of golf in this spring and summer…Fore!

“normal.” Initially, I mourned the loss of the abrupt end to so many things. Among one of the most disappointing for me personally was the cancellation of my son’s freshman year of high school baseball. Playing for his high school team has been a long-term goal that he has diligently worked toward daily since he was 8-years-old. I know it may seem like a trivial thing, and in the grand scheme of things it truly is, but as a mom it was hard to see the season snatched away from him after working so hard to make the team. There are so many other things lost that are much greater than that—too numerous to list out, and we all have our own losses and have been impacted by this global situation differently. However, in the midst of the uncertainty of what tomorrow brings, there is beauty in this time that we are given to stop everything and meditate on what truly matters. This is a time to press into our faith, spend meaningful moments with loved ones (thankfully technology allows us to

Julia Hampton

DOWNTOWN LEE’S SUMMIT HAS BECOME A DESTINATION THAT REFLECTS THE CULTURE OF THIS COMMUNITY AND WHY LEE’S SUMMIT IS AN IDEAL PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND RAISE A FAMILY. We caught up with four downtown business owners to hear about their businesses, why they love downtown and how they serve the community.

Julia Hampton of Julia E. Hampton, CPA

“I love Lee’s Summit because it feels like a small town even though it has a population of 100,000. Our downtown is made up of small business owners who care about residents and supporting each other. I love the progress Lee’s Summit is making with the bike trail, new downtown apartments and additional shopping and restaurants. Community involvement is important because residents need know what is happening in the town and work together to make it a place where everyone wants to live. I have been active with the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Velocity Lee’s Summit and the Rotary Club of Lee’s Summit.” Hamptoncpa.net

Ian O’Connell of Salon Metric:

“My wife and I started our business started in 2012 because we wanted to create a comfortable yet high-end salon experience offering the best services and staff in Lee’s Summit. We have two sons, and we support their school - Longview Farm Elementary. Teachers and staff play incredibly important roles for our children in the community. I am on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Lee’s Summit Community Improvement District. It’s an important role, being part of the downtown community and witnessing it grow and flourish while improving the district. The character of the buildings as well as the culture and the comraderies of the businesses is incredible.” salonmetric.net

Dennis Bacon

of Beyond Wealth Advisors (formerly Bacon Financial Advisors):

“Our financial planning practice is starting our rebranding to Beyond Wealth Advisors because we have expanded our scope as we have grown and added more advisors. We love being in the downtown area because the vibe is very relaxed and comfortable while still exuding excellence of service.   If I were to define the focus of our local ‘giving back,’ it would be in the area of developing strong character in our youth and helping those that are at risk.  Currently we are working with Pro Deo, Coldwater, Hillcrest Ministries and our individual local churches.  Team members also serve in board of directors or advisory boards for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Summit Christian Academy, Rachel House and Freedom Hoops.” RaymondJames.com/baconfinancialadvisors

Tim Denker of Denker Law Firm:

“Upon moving my firm to downtown Lee’s Summit in 2012, I immediately fell in love with getting to work in and experience everything downtown has to offer. Having watched the revitalization and growth that is well supported by both the residential and business community, it is difficult to even consider somewhere else. I am the Chairman of the Board for Velocity Lee’s Summit, and I am also serving as the Co-Chair of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. These organizations each provide a positive and significant impact to the growth, strength and sustainability of the business community.  I have previously served on the advisory board for the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation, and my oldest is enjoying kindergarten at Summit Christian Academy, where I volunteer.” Denkerlawfirm.com Whether its serving with the Chamber of Commerce or through local churches, downtown business owners understand their community responsibilities aren’t done at the end of the work day.

TRAVEL DESTINATION

A Ranch Within Reach AUTHENTICITY, HOSPITALITY, AND NATURE: A NEW FAMILY TRADITION

GROWING UP IN TEXAS, I’M RELATIVELY FAMILIAR WITH THE ALLURE OF DUDE RANCHES. I fondly remember riding my first horse as a young girl, experiencing the quintessential Texan atmosphere, and purchasing my only-to-be-worn-once cowboy hat.  It was all for the experience, of course, and added a particular flavor of “fitting in” that I coveted as a British-born trying-so-hard-to-be-Texan cowgirl.  Put simply, Dude Ranches are vacation destinations that provide guests with an experience of the Western lifestyle; 4UR Ranch added a depth to this seemingly simple portrayal with a dynamic experience we won’t soon forget.

relaxed after the weekend that we’d just weathered camping in Moab. I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to end the day. Refreshed and ready, we rose in the early morning to traverse the stunning terrain on horseback. My partner, Jeff, had never been riding before, but with an approachable lesson from Head Wrangler, Damon Gibbons, he was quickly on his way to being the new sheriff in town.  The journey itself was sensational, reviving childhood memories with reins in hand, wind in my hair, and sun gracing me from my Western-hat-wearing head down to my borrowed cowboy boots.  After some enlightening conversation, a few film photos, and an introduction to trotting, our trusty steeds carried us safely home to the stables.  A quick swing of the leg gracefully landed my feet to the ground, and I was back to the normal vantage point of my 5’3” stature. Looking up to my horse Rein’s gorgeous caramel-tinted mane, I thanked her for gifting me an intimate new perspective of the surrounding lands.    The story of this ranch would not be complete without understanding its relationship to the local community of Creede. If at any point you’re looking to expand your horizons, unique happenings abound—the renowned Creede Repertory Theatre, the innovative small houses of Creede America, and the vibrant Stephen Quiller Gallery to name a few— in this charming old miners town.  Despite its size, this tiny town sure does pack a loving punch and compliments 4UR Ranch’s experience in a big way. Across the board, 4UR Ranch shines as a glowing example of what is possible through dedication to authenticity and providing only the best. Arriving as curious strangers, Jeff and I left in touch with a palpable sense of feeling like family. If you’ve been looking to introduce a new family tradition, this is certainly the place.

FIVE HUNDRED AMPUTATIONS ARE PERFORMED EVERY DAY IN AMERICA. That statistic, from the Amputee Coalition, speaks to why Billy Brimblecom is passionate about Steps of Faith Foundation. Brimblecom, executive director and an amputee himself, notes that prosthetic limbs provide more than convenience for an amputee.

ARTICLE RILEY COWING PHOTOGRAPHY JASON DOMINGUES 42

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2020

Grace Manning

“It’s a matter of being handicapped or not,” he says. “It’s a matter of walking or using all four of your limbs and being able to go back to work and supporting your family or not... I’ve never expected to hear somebody say this, but we’ve had many patients say that we saved their life. They were so depressed and so down and so unable to take care of themselves and make a living and support their families that they had contemplated suicide. So why is it important? Because it’s not like, ‘I couldn’t walk and I got this new leg and that’s convenient.’ No. It affects the person 360 — mind, body, spirit, the whole thing. Not only that but their family, their friends, their coworkers.” For Grace Manning, who was connected to the organization when her leg needed to be replaced, Steps of Faith relieved the worry and anxiety of the unknown. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to replace the leg,” she says in an email. “Most people don’t have tens of thousands of dollars lying around. I do everything with my leg, from walking across the room to going down a flight of stairs. I can’t even leave the house without it or live my daily life without the ability to walk. I’m so incredibly grateful for Steps of Faith for taking away the burden and for helping me when I truly needed it. I’m overwhelmed by their generosity.” Another amputee, Jp Phillips, echoes her thanks. “Steps of Faith has been a lifesaver for me,” he says in an email. “If it wasn’t for them, I have no idea where Jp Phillips

I would be.” Brimblecom was first connected to the organization in 2013 by Robert Pittman, who owned the prosthetic company where Brimblecom was a patient. Pittman asked if he’d be willing to speak with one of his patients who had lost his leg to cancer. At the time he was working steadily as a musician but after that conversation, he told his wife he wished that could be his job. “[T]he idea of being a bridge to hope and comfort for amputees in need — I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do,” he recalls. “[T]hat moved me more than the idea of making music which has kind of historically moved me more than anything in my life. It just seemed like it was this opportunity that was kind of made for me. And ultimately it was.”   Over the last seven years he has seen the organization grow, noting that they receive requests each month for help in new cities across the country. In 2019, their goal was to help 100 people, and they ended the year helping 133. Connecting the amputee with a prosthetist that can help is an aspect of the job that Brimblecom loves.  CONTINUED >

“When I get to talk to a prosthetist in a new city... and to hear them go ‘Wow. Yes, I’m in,’ because what we’re doing is providing a solution to a problem they have as well,” he says. “What do they do with these great people who need their help, the kind of people they got in that business to help and they can’t help them because they have no way to pay for it? We’re an option.” April is Limb Loss Awareness month, and while Brimblecom doesn’t want people to live in fear of its occurrence, he acknowledges losing a limb can happen to anyone, any time. “It could happen to any of us,” he says. “One of my best buds works with me, and has for a few years now, and his mother lost a leg this past year because of a crazy infection. I mean, what are the odds that me and now his mom are both amputees? It’s not for people to live in fear of being in an auto accident or having vascular disease or getting cancer by any means, but it’s not something that anyone ever plans or signs up for.”  And for those who are uncertain of how to help — Steps of Faith is a place to start.  “This is a small but very legitimate charity that people can see their dollars in action with every step somebody that we help takes,” he says. Stock Options Often Overlooked in Divorce Settlements In any divorce, all marital property and debt have to be divided. In an equitable division state, marital property and debt are to be divided in a just manner when considering all the statutory factors. Stock options are often overlooked by many parties when dividing marital property and debt. Some parties might forget to include them on their financial statements inoccently. In other cases, a party might, unfortunately, fail to disclose them in hopes that the other party does not discover it. In a divorce, it is vital that both parties act in an above-board manner. One way to do this is to inform the other party of all marital property and debt that exists. This means that parties going through a divorce should check with their employer, if they do not know, about whether they have any stock options. Often, the best place to inquire is through the human resource and/or benefits department. It also might mean the party who

suspects that their spouse might have stock options ensures that the lawyer inquires about this in the discovery process or otherwise. In an uncontested divorce where parties desire to settle the parties need to be able to trust that their spouse will voluntarily disclose if stock options exist. If stock options do exist, there are a few different ways in which these stock options can often be dealt with in a divorce. First, if possible, these stock options can be divided as the date of divorce in an equitable manner. But in some cases, dividing the stock options as of the date of the divorce is not possible. This may be because the options are not vested yet. Some employer terms may also not allow stock options to go to a nonemployee. In these cases, there are really two options. One, the stock options may end up being divided later into the future once they vest. That said, the spouse who has the stock options might argue that since the op-

But to do this, the parties will need to have the value of the stock options properly valuated. Otherwise, a fair offset cannot be reached. Valuating stock options can be somewhat complex. DREAMING OF THE ALOHA SPIRIT (CONTINUED)

4. THE PEOPLE, THE FOOD, THE CULTURE AND THE LUAUS! No list of reasons to visit Hawaii would be complete without mentioning the ubiquitous “aloha spirit” expressed by the people. Tourism is so important to these islands, everyone recognizes the need to radiate kindness, patience and good feelings to everyone they meet. The culture reflects a true melting pot of people coming to the islands from all around the word. Originally, many were brought to work on the sugar and pineapple plantations that were once prevalent. Now, almost 25 percent of the island residents claim ancestry of two or more races and the blending of the cultures is evident everywhere. Nowhere is the blending of Hawaii’s diverse ethnicities more evident than in the food. Hawaii Regional Cuisine is a culinary movement inventing ways to connect  all these cultures through food.  Of course, sometimes the best and most affordable restaurants are the “hole-in-the-wall” variety where locals meet to eat. Last but not least, no visit to Hawaii would be complete without attending a traditional Luau. The opportunities are vast and on almost all the islands.  The music, dance, costumes and food are a highlight of any tourist’s vacation. 50
