DAVIS MELLICK, PA-C, TRAVELS OVERSEAS FOR MEDICAL MISSION TRIP Davis Mellick, PA-C, from Evans Direct Primary Care will be traveling to Jamaica in October on a medical mission trip through the American Caribbean Experience. The ACE group has a permanent location in Jamaica that helps with social services. Their goal is to equip the locals with education and resources for sustainable change and to strengthen the Jamaican community. Every three months, a medical team travels there to go out to the local communities to provide ongoing health care services. This includes parasite treatment, diabetes, high blood pressure and wound care. ACE is also involved in micro tourism and farming and aims to provide sustainable jobs and resources to the nationals.

Frog Hollow Tavern At Frog Hollow Tavern, you’ll find a unique setting that is a meeting of fine dining and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Located in downtown Augusta, Frog Hollow Tavern serves signature dishes such as Roasted Red Snapper or the Grilled Southeastern Family Farms Rustic Cut Pork Chop, which are flavorful combinations of quality local, regional and seasonal ingredients.

“We outsource our ingredients seasonally and from local farmers to ensure that we are serving the freshest dishes,” says Chef Sean Wight, owner.

With your meal, you can enjoy specialty cocktails and wine from their extensive wine list, which focuses on products with origins in organic, biodynamic and sustainable practices.

Augusta native Megan Pierce and her husband, Jordan, love to visit local restaurants.

“Frog Hollow is always our first choice when we are looking for a really special experience,” she says. “The food is unmatched in quality and taste, and we love that the atmosphere has a local flair.

Their dish pairings are unique, often bringing unexpected flavors together. With many of their menu items being seasonal, it’s always fun to see what is new each time we go.”

Cork and Flame In 2018, wine merchant Roger Strohl and Chef Justin Hayes came together to create Cork and Flame, a unique dining experience that pairs an expansive retail wine market with fine dining fare cooked over oak or hickory, using an open hearth.

Building on local and regional ingredients, Chef Justin Hayes creates progressive American dishes with touches of haute cuisine and international flair.

“Our menu is mostly gluten-free, and we have the largest vegetarian and vegan menu in the area,” General Manager Jessica Baskette says. “Our signature dishes include Wild Mushroom Gnocchi and an a la carte menu featuring prime cuts of beef…all of which guests can enjoy watching our chefs prepare in the open-hearth kitchen featuring two Argentinian-style grills.”

The wine menu consists of more than 2,800 bottles of wine, and weekly wine tastings on Friday and Saturday nights provide added flair to a traditional date night.

“My husband and I first went to Cork & Flame for our anniversary dinner,” says Amy Miller. “The service was impeccable; the food and wine were amazing. It has an inviting atmosphere.”

Manuel’s Bread Café Located in Hammond’s Ferry, this North Augusta gem was born out of owner Manuel Verney Carron’s desire to open “a typical French café that you would find anywhere in Europe.”

At the café, you’ll find classic French fares such as beef burgundy, croque-monsieur, and steak frites. You’ll also find dishes created using local and seasonal products, some as local as the Blue Clay Farm right next door!

“We took over the Blue Clay Farm a year after opening the restaurant in 2008,” Manuel says. “It was a natural progression for us, as it allows us to grow some of our vegetables, herbs, fruits, and olives that we use in the restaurant.”

Thea Barry says that she and her husband, Jeramy, “love going to Manuel’s Bread Café for a special date night! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. Every time we’re there, we feel like we’re out of own on a getaway. We love their farm-to-table-style food.

The ingredients are fresh, and the meals are always creatively executed. Oh, and their salted chocolate cake might be one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted.”

Calvert’s An Augusta tradition for more than 40 years, Calvert’s at Surrey Center has been the date night destination for a countless number of couples. “When we were new to the area in 1983,” Kyle says, “Calvert’s was recommended to us as the place to go for our special occasions. Whether as a couple for our anniversary (we just went there for our 44th!) or with a group of friends, the service, excellent food and conversation and encouraging atmosphere have never disappointed. FRESHLY BAKED

BY GARDEN CIT Y COOKIES INGREDIENTS + 1/2 cup oats + 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour + 1 teaspoon baking soda + 1 teaspoon salt + 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon + 1 cup unsalted butter, melted + 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed + 3/4 cup granulated sugar + 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

+ 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice + 2 large eggs

Grind oats in a blender or small food proces-

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Roll or scoop 1/4-cupfuls of dough into balls and line onto the cookie sheet. This stage is for chilling dough, so no need to space. Cover dough with plastic wrap and chill for 4 hours or overnight before baking.

Preheat oven to 350ºF, and place cookies 2 inches apart on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. Slightly press each ball with palm. Bake cookies 13-17 minutes, taking care to not over-bake,

YOU NEED + Graham crackers + Chocolate bars + Peanut butter cups + Sprinkles + Sea salt + Chocolate syrup + Caramel syrup + Raspberries + Coconut flakes + Marshmallows + Marshmallow fluff (vegetarian)

WHAT

YOU DO SPRINKLED: Begin with two graham cracker squares. Place one on a microwave-safe plate and top with chocolate bars and a scoop of marshmallow fluff. Set aside. Take the other graham cracker square and spread marshmallow fluff on half (top + bottom), then coat with sprinkles and set aside. Microwave the half with chocolate + marshmallow for 10 seconds, or until marshmallow fluff is melty. Remove and top with sprinkled graham cracker.

PB + CHOCO DELIGHT: Begin with two graham cracker squares.

Place one on a microwave-safe plate and top with peanut butter cups and a scoop of marshmallow fluff. Microwave for 10 seconds, or until marshmallow fluff is melty. Remove and top with chocolate syrup and second graham cracker square.

RASPBERRY COCONUT: Begin with two graham cracker squares.

Place one on a microwave-safe plate and top with chocolate bars and a marshmallow. Microwave for 10 seconds, or until marshmallow puffs up. Remove and top with raspberries, coconut flakes and second graham cracker square.

ARTICLE MICHELLE W. PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY RANDY PACE THIS FALL, THE MAIZE AT STEED’S DAIRY CELEBRATES ITS 10TH YEAR. That’s 10 years of memories made by more than 150,000 people who have come through the gates to enjoy the changing season, finding fun, adventure and special moments.

While the corn maze is the main attraction, there are many other activities on-site, including a pumpkin patch, a petting zoo, hayrides, a kid zip line and cow milking demonstrations (on certain days).

“Although we have lots of new people each year, we try to add something every year so that people who return continue to enjoy it,” owner Jim Steed says. “There are lots of photo opportunities and games all over the property.”

The corn maze, which has a different theme each year, is the biggest draw for most visitors.

“We try to keep a local charity theme every year for the corn maze, but this year is our 10th anniversary, so I was thinking about doing something along those lines,” Jim says. “Then I saw on the news that it’s also the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. So, we did an Apollo 11 moon landing theme with a big rocket, the moon with some clouds and the flagpole.”

Favorite attractions for kids are the enormous jumping pillow and the giant tube slide. Those seeking a fun night out with friends or a special someone will find a whimsical pumpkin patch, an excellent maze and tons of adventure. When asked about his favorite attraction, Jim said, “Definitely the corn cannons!”
